How long did you have someone to help out at home post-op?
ChronicJam posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My surgery is Monday 12/8. My husband arranged to work from home for all of next week, should that be sufficient? When the 15th comes around, I'll have to be able to get my 10 year old & 6 yr old ready for school. They walk to & from, so I won't have to drive any where. I'm just wondering if I need to arrange for someone to come stay with me the second week home. -
Hi Everybody~ I was banded 28 December 2010. Have been thinking about it a few years, since my mother had it done at age 65, 4 years ago. I'm excited to finally have it done and ready to start losing. I'm 5'9" and my highest weight, a few months ago, was 338. I was 319 day of surgery. I have no idea what I've lost so far because my scale changes up to 15 lbs just depending where it is on my floor!! I did a 2 week pre-op liquid diet and the first few days after banding was all liquid, but then I tried some soft foods, chewed well, and they went down fine, so then I tried more. So far, everything has went down well, and I was starting to wonder if the band was really there! Then yesterday, I tried eating some chicken, forgot what I was doing, and ate fast, not chewing well, and by the second bite I had a rude awakening...it got stuck and felt very uncomfortable. It went away after about 10 minutes, and I was able to continue eating a little more, very carefully, chewing a million times. In the literature I was given, it has 4 phases of diet to go through, but the discharge nurse said progress in the diet as I am able, so I did. Have any of you went to solids that quickly and is all ok? I don't want to jeapordize any thing, but it seems fine. I return on January13 for my first fill, so I'm sure it will be different then..... And another question, how do you guys get those stats and measuring sticks at the bottom of your posts? Happy New Year everybody!

Grocery Stores
Inner Surfer Girl replied to biggiesmalls250's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I avoid added sugars, not all sugars. I just try to keep the sugar content low. I especially avoid high fructose corn syrup. For instance, when looking at a Greek yogurt I aim for a Protein content greater than 10 grams and sugar content of less than 10 grams. -

I just turned 57. I had surgery Feb 19. Since Jan 2014 I have lost over 50 pounds. My blood pressure is normal. I do not snore and gird is gone. Also arthritis pain is gone thanks to surgery. While I hope to lose more weight I am so happy. I seem to lose slower than others I feel healthier than I have from several decades I just recently started walking and exercising. I would recommend surgery if you have your doctor's blessings. Good luck and keep us posted.

I am 61. So far I've lost 32 pounds since surgery on 2/19. (52 since I started my diet almost a year ago). I feel it is going really slow compared to some people. I try to eat what I'm supposed to (okay, I ate 3 French fries when I went out to dinner with my hubby a few weeks ago) but that's the extent of my cheating. I walk a lot, and will start back at the health club again next week. It gets very discouraging...especially when I see people dropping as much weight in a few weeks as I've done in over 3 months. I know everybody loses weight differently but darn, I wish the pounds would fall off of me. I know I am losing sizes because I've had to go through my closet a few times already. I guess it will take as long as it takes. At least the weight is going the right way.

Vets/Nuts Please Help
Fiddleman replied to shayv123's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not sure if my diet would be considered typical, but here goes (from a non vet): Breakfast: matrix Protein shake with chia seeds and Water Pre exercise snack: 2 energy squares Post exercise snack: Amplified Wheybolic 60 shake with water Lunch: 3-4 ounces of chicken patty, 1-2 ounces of green veggie or red pepper Snack: nu go slim Protein Bar Dinner: 3-4 ounces of protein (chicken or beef), 1-2 ounces of green veggie Snack: matrix shake with water I try and eat Paleo as much as possible with supplementation to achieve higher daily protein amounts. If I exercise in the afternoon, I switch my morning Snacks with afternoon snack. Morning exercise is running and afternoon exercise is cross fit on alternating days. I try and run between 5 k and 10 k as fast as I can, ramping up the incline for more intensity and for burning of more calories (800-1000). I do not know the calories I burn in cross fit, but it is difficult, intense and about an hour long. On weekend, I usually eat out for one lunch and dinner, but still pay close attention to diet to support fitness. I found it helpful to eat as low carb as possible up to month 5 and eat high protein. I could not eat raw veggies so well so did green drinks. This kept insulin levels normalized and prevented much hunger. As my exercise ramped up at month 5, I began to eat more good carbs. I have found it a little difficult to control hunger if I eat too many grams of sugar in the protein bar. I am currently switching from a protein bar with 2 grams refined sugar to a Paleo protein bar with raw honey and more carbs. So far so good, but time will tell how this changes my hunger. I hope it reduces as I will not be eating those 2 grams of refined sugar any longer. I tracked like a fiend for first 3 months and then stopped. I keep it simple, repetitive so no need to track once it became second nature to live the daily life of post op without much random food planning. I really do not like tracking if it requires more than 10-15 minutes in the morning so made a decision to eat in a way that does not require tracking. Eating the same thing every day is not as bad as it seems. I do not need a lot of variety of I finds food that fits the form and taste I require. Hope this helps! -
I met with my surgeon today and I have another appointment for Janurary. I have 10 lbs to lose, 5 before they send out a surgery approval and the rest until I get scheduled a surgery date. With all of that looks Like I will be here for some time. Hopefully I can get the ball rolling on this 10lb weightloss. I just had my band unfilled so I can start to eat more dense foods and lose weight. wish me luck!

Two Months so far, is this normal?
Dubichick replied to ahanna2012's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey girl, I had my surgery a little bit after you but my surgeons office told me not to mind the scale since women can fluctuate 10 _ 15 lbs. During our cycles just from water weight. They told me to keep up with my measurements once a month. They said that with working out and extra protein I should be building/ muscles which is good since muscles help burn more fat anyways congratulations on your loss. Were in it together -
Its ok. It will be worth it. It was the best decision I made. I am 10 days post op and have lost 15 lbs so far. I feel great. I am very conscious about what I put in my body now. I feel I look better. I am getting compliments!

3 days post-op! Feel bloated yet not eating/drinking enough
Emilysgigi replied to dlynnmarie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was also banded on May 13. The first day wasn't so bad but the second day was terrible. Each day since has been getting better as far as the pain and weakness. I also am not able to get in all the fluids. Everything I take in, comes right back out. Anyone else with this problem? I am running to the bathroom like 10 times a day. Tomorrow I start full liquids. Anyone else? I am looking forward to some cream of wheat. Hopefully things will improve when I start taking something in with some substance. Take care and best wishes! -
Yeah, I was moved from the liquids to purée after 10 days, when I was initially told 2 weeks. Cant say I was complaining though! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Good to know. I just feel like I'm tolerating everything really well, and would love to try a scrambled egg or something other than liquid. Obviously don't want to damage anything, but I know some docs advance their WLS patients quickly. I'm struggling over here When's your next apt? Two Months so far, is this normal?
ahanna2012 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Okay, so this is my first posting on here. Don't know if I am doing this in the right area or whatever. I'm Alex I got my surgery in November, my starting weight was 246 I am now about 205/210 I keep fluctuating those 5 lbs. I'm primarily eating salads really and completely changed my eating habits. I only eat lean Protein and although I don't drink as much Water as I should I am increasing it slowly. I've received about three fills so far. To me, it doesn't seem as if I am losing weight as fast as I have seen others losing which does have me very concerned. I wasn't expecting to only be at 205 by now, I was I'd be losing 1-2lbs per weeks as my nutritionist told me before I got the surgery. I've mad tremendous accomplishments so far like my pants size has gone down to a size 12 from 16 and my shirt to a medium/large but my belly is still as big as ever. lol can come one please just tell me if I am doing something wrong possibly? or is this normal? Also I have incorporated some exercise not as much as I was hoping because the gym out here is ridiculously expensive and I am 19 and a college student. So, I was waiting to go back to school to join the planet fitness up there. -
Just had my surgery 10 days ago! I was very excited, but very nervous too--even thought about backing out a couple of times as the day drew near! Honestly, the first day after surgery was the worst, not because of pain, but because they kept trying to get me to drink fluids, and I just didn't want to. I had some nausea, but no unbearable pain--it was more like an achy discomfort, like when you have a tummy ache. The doctors were great with intravenous pain medication so if I got too achy they gave me this very cool stuff that made me feel oh, so nice, and put me right to sleep...lol I was sent home the day after my surgery with pain pills, but never needed to take them--a couple of Tylenol did the trick for any residual soreness. Really, by day 4 I felt completely normal, as if nothing had been done at all! Just get ready to enjoy a few days of pampering, and a reason to get some extra sleep. Aside from feeling a little groggy from the anesthesia, you will be fine in a day or two and ready to begin your journey to freedom!

Anyone else obsessed with the scale after surgery?
vucarre replied to isabella2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I weigh morning a night. It is not a problem for and don't agree with the logic that should not weigh everyday. When I am weighing everyday, I am losing. When I am on the upswing, I am not weighing. As long as you can manage your expectations that you are not going to lose everyday and some days you will gain even when following your program to a t. If you can do that, you should be fine!!! BTW I had my surgery Thurs, 19 May and I have lost 10 pounds. Certainly did not expect to lose that much that fast. I know it is Water and I will certainly not be losing at that rate going forward. Best wishes!!! -
Anyone else obsessed with the scale after surgery?
littledutchee replied to isabella2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have to admit, I weigh almost daily also. I use it both as a barometer of how I am doing AND hoping to see a loss. Unfortunately, I am pretty discouraged right now. I was banded on 3/10/11 and initially lost 9lbs however, when I went onto solid foods I gained back 4lbs. I am trying to watch what I eat but have NO restriction at all. I can eat anything. I have not had a fill yet. When I had my last appointment 6 weeks ago the doctor said it was too soon for a fill. I go back on 5/24/11. Hopefully he will give me a fill. My hope is that once I get filled, I will start seeing progress again. Has anyone gone through this? -
Obesity Coverage Denied as a Pre-Existing Condition Under the New Healthcare Bill?
linawina replied to bcl1628's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I argued that point with someone earlier! But I believe that if someone was not receiving healthcare for something specifically related to obesity in the past, it will not be considered a pre-existing condition. I even pushed my sister to start getting treatment for her high blood pressure; she's avoided talking to a doctor about it for years now but I feel she needs it on record that she's trying to treat her obesity so it can be considered pre-existing. I also think the coverage is going to be more inconsistent among insurance providers than it has been in the past. whatever changes are made, I believe they wouldn't take effect until early 2019, but don't quote me on that. -
Uneasy Re Clinic's Advice to Speed Weight Loss
CowgirlJane replied to katonaboat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have no experience with weight loss drugs. I would be hesitant too. There are ways to accelerate weight loss ( I just typed it up on another thread..haha) ... and also accepting that we all lose at a different rate and speed and that is okay too! Edited to add... I just cut and paste what I typed in another post. Not exactly on topic, but maybe some thoughts for you.... I started at 308, and about 7 months post op my weight loss slowed to a CRAWL. i mean like 2# a month. I still weighed in the 190s and at 5'5" had a ways to go. I found out that for me I had to do a couple of things to get going again. #1 I had to really face the fact that at 190 I was physically pretty comfortable and still had an nice emotionally shielding fat suit. I looked great according to my friends, but in truth, I looked matronly which was safe for me. #2 I came to realize that I needed to go low carb to get the weight off. For me, Protein bars where the number one issue - I was having 1-2 a day and that is ALOT of carbs. I had to stop buying them. #3 I had to change my exercise routine. I was making NO progress spending long times on an eliptical and using the weight machines. I switched to high intensity interval training - using a spinning bike. I went back to losing 10-12# a month and got to my goal of 158# 14 months post op. I have since lost a few more pounds during maintenance and now weigh about 140ish. -
Elliptical - How long did you last your first time? lol
♥dreamable posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have started working out on my Elliptical. We are supposed to be getting 30 minutes of exercise daily (I have been walking). However with the elliptical, well it's pretty obvious in less than 30 seconds that it has been 20+ years since I have actually "worked out". LOL. I was following the training settings on mine and their recommendation is to start with 20 minutes the first time, and do that for 5 days and then the following week go for 25 minutes.. and keep increasing over the weeks until you reach 40 minutes. Well I have everything I can do to even get through 1 song on my playlist. LOL I'm assuming I should just start there and go? 5 minutes this week and try for 7 or 10 minutes per time the following week? So there is my confession and someday my inspiring starting point: "The first time I got on my elliptical, I couldn't even finish the first song on my playlist".- 6 replies
