    June 2022 surgery buddies

I am so happy my doctor only required one day of clear liquids before moving me to stage 2 which basically means anything liquid including soup and yogurt. Isopure protein powder goes with everything, so I'm loving having yogurt, cream of wheat and creamy soups to get my protein in. I will be perfectly happy to never have a protein shake again for as long as I live.

My surgery was 6/14. Doesn’t feel like 12 days ago. Healing fast. I did clear fluids until day 6 post-op (plus 3 days preop). I went to stage 2 a day early because I was getting really light headed. It’s so crazy how different programs are. Now I’m on Fairlife Elite, strained soups, s/f pudding, baby meats & cereals, thinned cottage cheese, yogurt, probiotic, etc. Had to start a half pouch baby prune purée to promote BM. It all digests fine. I can feel the restriction around 1/4 to 1/2 cup. I lost 17 lbs (6/11-6/20) then have been stuck the past 6 days. Wondering if it’s too few calories? I never made it past 550/day so far. I have been meeting protein and water goals in stage 2. I walked 6 hours today (farming). Maybe it will un-budge me.

I can have plain yogurt but that sounds pretty boring as well. I feel like I need a change and I still have a ways to go before I start the purée stage

    Really this many pills!?

I understand those are the guidelines are you. But does it mention exact doses of supplements you may need? If that's the case you can check out Bariatric multivitamins, and these more or less includes most that you may need. I take "1 bariatric multivitamin and Vit D3". B12 and all not needed since bariatric special takes care of it. Bariatric special also has the kind with extra "iron" if that's a requirement for you (Check out Bariatricpal once a day multivitamin, I consume Naturelo brand once a day kind). Even with calcium, if you try to consume more dairy, you may be able to cut down on the calcium supplements. I don't take any extra calcium since I consume a lot of yogurt, cheese and milk (Vegetarian diet). My nut stated as long as I am getting more than 1200mg a day of calcium, I don't have to take any extra supplements. The day I am lacking, I can take calcium citrate as needed. I know calcium supplements are about half of the pills for you. If you can't cut down on those, may be try the chewables ones, so it feels like you're having chocolate or something instead of swallowing gigantic pills.

I had mine done 6/20. So many people are on different nutrition plans. My plan allowed nothing by clear liquids until day 4 post op. Then I could add in protein shakes and that’s it for a week. Just the clear liquids and shakes. Day 11 I think I can add pudding or yogurt or strained soups, but I’d love something now. Being around a whole family who is eating normally is difficult. All I want is to share some food with them.

Pureed Egg Salad (Keeping Me Sane)

So I can't stand light mayo or light salad dressings and I'm not sure I'll be a fan of Greek yogurt in its place. I get to start week 3 tomorrow and I'm so dang excited becuase I plan to make egg salad (I raise backyard chickens so can't wait to finally get back to eating their butt nuggets! 🤣), chicken salad, and tuna salad and I was planning on using regular mayo. My question as a new post bariatric patient is future plans with this eating lifestyle. My nutritionist said I won't be eating carbs for a while and even when I do start to introduce them, she said a lot of bariatric patients don't tolerate much of them. I was thinking low carb would be best for me as I have done it before but how would that work if I need to do low fat too? I've done keto before and to me, it's sooo much easier than low fat so I'm curious what others are doing successfully. Is there a way to find a happy medium between low carb and low fat?

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Same! It's OK, even though I'm not where I thought I'd be, I'm happy to be losing consistently and not gaining it! I'm sorry you're experiencing so much nausea, I usually don't get nauseated unless I'm really about to vomit. Have you spoken with your doctor about trying Zofran to help with the nausea? My eating is OK. I struggle a lot, it seems many things make me vomit or can't be tolerated. I make sure to chew very, very well and to make sure not to overeat ever. Usually eat a 4-6 oz meal over an hour or 90 minutes to make sure I don't overdo it. If using portion cups, I have between 1/2c and 3/4c of food, depending on what I'm eating. When it's 000 Vanilla yogurt + blueberries I do the 1/2c yogurt and 1/4c blueberries, but normal meals with protein/veg are just 1/2c (4oz). I can finally get all of my protein and most of the water in everyday. I'm not quite to 64oz, but most days I'm really close. It's difficult to drink that much fluid throughout the day because I'm on the phone all day at work, so the time I have to down water is limited to before taking calls, on breaks, and after work (7pm at night). I walk, I swim, or I jump on the elliptical for a few minutes if it's raining and I can't walk. I've tried working out with resistance bands, but just a few sets into a workout, I feel like I'm going to pass out. I'm having about 750 calories a day most days, sometimes less if I ate something that made me vomit that day because for the rest of the day I can only have liquid because my stomach is unforgiving. I actually did pass out a couple weeks ago, apparently. We took our daughter to Legoland and I thought I had been drinking enough and forgot to eat (breakfast at 9am, but should've had protein or snack by 12pm and didn't). I don't remember what happened, but I woke up in the medical facility being cared for, they said I passed out and needed to be hydrated ASAP. They gave me 2 gatorade popsicles and made me drink my protein shake (premier protein carton my husband gave to them) and eventually I was feeling better and caught up with the family to continue our vacation. Truth is, I have hashimotos and because of the restrictions in eating, I feel 1000xs better. Free from the fatigue and the brain fog, I can finally reach my toes again, and I'm all around feeling better than I did at 421lbs (or the 381 I was at on the day of surgery). I really hope that you find it easier to be consistent. Sometimes setting hard boundaries are needed when you have a set day/time/times that you decide to walk/exercise. My daughter is 12 and a good helper, she reminds me every morning about our walks together OR getting on the elliptical and we go swimming every Saturday, sometimes Thursday or Sunday too, depending on how I feel. I don't stress the exercise as much right now because I'm consistent enough that when I take a day to rest, I'm not upsetting anything. My doctor asked me to start working up to eating 1000 calories a day by my 3 month post op, but I don't think that's going to happen. At 750 I feel full all day long and can hardly eat more and I don't eat fats in my food unless I have olives or avocado because I can't process it very well. But alas, we are all different. I've seen many stating how they feel great and can eat pretty much anything with no issues and I'm happy that they can. I'm hoping to grow up and be like them someday, LOL. Unfortunately, that's not my story for now.

Hi Sabi! Congrats on your journey. I do not believe you are messing anything up. What you are able to tolerate is going to be different from others, family included. I believe what your brother is saying is to slow down the eating process. Give yourself a chance to savor each spoonful and this will help to slow down the time it takes to complete your meal (yogurt in this case) and may make you feel fuller along the way. Listen to your body. I'm sure others will chime in with their thoughts and experiences as well. Take care and best of luck to you.
  12. Hi yalllll, So I’m rlly just wondering if I’m fucking this surgery up 😞 I am able to eat a yogurt (6oz) in like 20 mins and I don’t feel gross after. My brother who also had the surgery two/three years ago is telling me I’m eating way too fast, but I don’t like understand how or what he means? He won’t rlly help me understand either 😞 I just don’t want this all to be in vain, I’m a worry wort as you can probably see but I have lost 12ish lbs and I wanna keep the momentum, and make sure I’m not doing anything dumb to jeopardize my success. Any input would be helpful! Xx

by light yogurt I'm guessing she means something like Dannon's Light & Fit (which you can get anywhere), Kroger's Carbmaster (at Kroger and Kroger affiliates), or the 100-calorie "protein Greek yogurt" that Aldi sells in a 4-pack. But there are others. There are others out there as well - but those three come to mind.
  14. Hello all, according to guide I have from my doctor: this is what I can take week 1 below. I am confused on how to make a creamed soup as I don’t soup. Are there suggestions for a soup for week 1? Something that is easy to make? Can I have chicken broth instead of a creamed soup? My second question is about light yogurt blended with skim milk as that it was it listed in the picture I have posted. Any recommendations of a yogurt I can pick from target or Walmart to satisfy this requirement? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. I'm going to be working on staying away from soda as much as possible. I'm going to try to get the zero sugar gatorades and diet lemon iced tea. This will hopefully make that part easier and if I got used to it now, it'll make it easier for the long run. No way, after I get the surgery, I don't want to risk it lol. I know it'll be hard since I think it's the bubbles I like. For sweets, I wanna try and make healthier sweets like I did last year. (If you want to try it, it's 1/2 c plain non fat greek yogurt, 2 tbsp sugar free fat free pudding mix, 1 tbsp zero calorie sweetener (or 2 tbsp if you want it a little sweeter). Mix and top on strawberries. 2 tbsp reddi whip and 1tsp sprinkles of you want. It's really good and low in calories. I know when there's parties and events where there are foods I love, it's going to be hard. I mean everything is okay in moderation. Right? I'd be worried if I'm at a party somewhere else instead of home, that I'd get sick. So, what I've seen with a youtuber, her and her husband bring their own portioned out foods. What foods can you not tolerate? What's a lolly bar? I guess what you can do is avoid it or have something small to satisfy yourself. Is the flavored Protein powder fruity?

Day 8ish- apparently what I mean by variety was a different fruit and veggie option and maybe a protein shake or bar. 😂 I counted both the shake and bar in my total calories for the day but may or may not eat them. One thermos has soup the other frozen strawberries and yogurt. The baggies are granola and roasted garbanzo beans. Took the leftover pizza with green beans and a salad with light Italian dressing.

    Dinner party on soft foods

Take an insulated lunch bag (with freezer puck) in the car, packed with a spoon and containers of hummus, Greek yogurt, applesauce, cooked baby carrots, or whatever other soft foods appeal to you. Problem solved.

I am 10 days post opp( week 2), thin liquids as well with cream soups, pudding, Greek yogurt. Soft veggies are not on my list till week 3 with Puréed but every surgeon/nutritionist is different. As long as you are tolerating it should be fine.

Day 6 is leftovers- Breakfast- pineapple chicken and brown rice. Lunch- leftover zucchini bake. Kind of soupy but delicious! Dinner- full fat plain yogurt, a tiny bit of honey, pineapple chunks, and granola.
  21. When I had lapband before, I didn't drink soda for like 3 months. It was my cousins wedding and I had a Shirley temple. It did make me feel tight with the band. I obviously know that the only way to stop drinking soda is to not buy it. My brother drinks it and he's not really overweight. (I live with family) but we also have diet sprite. Only my mom, me, and my brother really drink soda. Since they're not in need of losing weight, then I don't want to take it away from them, eventhough, we should all stop drinking it. So, there's that, I want to avoid it if I can. When I was on weight watchers, I didn't drink soda as much. I do have some crystal light packets and the strawberry lemonade ones are good. I know when I had the lapband, we could have diet iced tea and the diet gatorade.. if I can I really want to cut as much sugar as I can. I seriously want to do this right. It's annoying that people think ill still fail. I like yogurts and I find those to ne sweet enough. I eat the chobani Greek yogurts or dannon Greek yogurt. Shockingly I do like a lot of sugar free stuff. I will have to check those recipes out

Day 5 and I’m pretty sure I’ll have leftover foods beginning week 2 as I still have a serving of the zucchini bake, 1 of the pineapple chicken, 3 of the soup, 3 of brown rice, 1 of congee, and over a dozen eggs and 3/4 a cabbage that isn’t slaw. Breakfast- brown rice congee with crispy chicken skin, 2 confit garlic cloves, spinach and an over easy egg. Lunch- coleslaw made with pineapple juice instead of vinegar and full fat plain yogurt instead of Mayo. Also, 2 pieces roasted pineapple, a mini bell pepper, and leftover crispy baked tofu. Snack- serving of granola. Dinner- a serving oatmeal pancakes, 1/2 cup baked sweet potato, 1/2 cup roasted garbanzo beans, 1/4 cup cucumber pickles and 1 1/2tbsp pickled carrots. Both the carrots and cucumbers were pickled in the same jar with sliced garlic and dill. SO garlicky!

    May 2022 surgery?

I had this problem at one time. The first key is fluids. I found water with flavor was the best. Get hydrated first. You might need something with electrolytes in it. A good one is pedi light they have it for adults as well. It's close to 2.50 a bottle. You are only going to use it when you are really low on fluids it has glucose in it ( its normallyin any drug store, walmart ect close to the over counter nausea medication). Another one I really like is "liquid IV". It's normally in the section with the flavors powders are in walmart or Amazon. I found I need the fluid on my stomach the first thing in the morning before I can tolerate protein. I drink about 4 oz but it will depend on you. I do not do protein shakes that are ready made. I found they make nausea. I use unflavored protein powder I put in water or hot tea or anything to get my protein. If my tea is not sweet enough then I add stevia . After I got enough fluids and my nausea got better then I could drink protein powder that had flavor. I had to add more water than it called for. I like hot coco with protein in 12 ozs of water instead of 8. Yes you need to wait 30mins after drinking to eat and 30 mins after eating . But you need to be well hydrated. Look at your urine and how often you urinate. I drink the 4 oz then I have the 12 oz with protein and water first thing in the morning. After the protein drinkni make I drink another 4 ozs. This gets me on my way for the day very hydrated since I did not drink anything for at least 8 hrs while I slept. Then I would eat cream of wheat, yogurt or water down oatmeal. Then sipping afterwards. Lunch I would eat a turkey sausage links or cottage cheese or two meat balls with sauce. Or baked fish chopped up. Now I have been adding soft veggies or beans for a snack. Sip between meals, wait at least 30 mins after eating. Eat only 2 or 3 oz of food at a time. Take small bits I used "diet tools" from amazon. Their spoon is the right size for a bit. Take 30 mins to eat. Bit wait a few minutes then bit again. It will get better. Listen to your body , we all are different. The fluid in the morning was the game changer for me. Plus using the Baritastic app to track everything and get my calories between 600 to 800 daily.
