IBS and lap band surgury
Jachut replied to more2me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I now have surgically induced IBS and a band and I find my band helps me enormously to manage my triggers. I had rectal cancer, diagnosed last year, a bowel resection in which my rectum was removed and a new pouch created from my colon to function as a rectum. For nine months I had an ileostomy and the most irritible gut you can image, I literally poured my lifeblood into that damn bag day after day, so much so that at the reversal surgey, I gained about 5lb overnight simply from rehydration. Since my reversal eight weeks ago, my colon has had to learn to work again and it is not liking it. To start off with, I had to live off a low residue diet meaning I ate white bread, white rice, white Pasta, cheese, apple sauce and little else. No fruit and veg, little Protein and fat. If I didnt have my band to keep portion size down, I would ahve ballooned on that horrible diet. I have been gradually introducing regular foods and I will be OK in the long run but for now, I have an ongoing battle with foul, eyewatering gas and accompanying pain and bloating. Every single freaking day after lunch. It is revolting, I am so stinky. I have the urge to have a bowel motion about twenty times most days and only pass skinny little nuggets that give no satisfaction at all. What makes all of this worse is eating big quantities. On days I work, I cannnot afford to eat lunch - I'm a teacher and once int he classoom, I cant go to the bathroom, so eating is really problematic for me during working days. With my band, I can eat a bite and a cup of coffee at lunchtime and make it thorugh the day without passing out from hunger. I thank the powers that be for my band every day. It got me through the stodge diet without major gain and it makes working possible for me at this very early stage. Eventually my bowel will settle, but that's what I find - eating very small helps and avoiding eating all togehter in situations where you wont be able to handle the result is vital - and a band makes that much easier. -
No weightloss in one month

I just posted a similar topic just about an hour ago. I was banded 10/15/09 and seem to be stuck at a 36 lb. loss. I am eating healthy and working out at least 3 days a week. I understand about muscle being more dense that fat, I understand about weight loss plateaus, and I understand the band is just a tool, but my "inner child" is frustrated because the scale isn't moving. I understand your frustration completely. We just need to understnad that this too shall pass. Let's agree to not weigh more than once a week? Deal????? Maybe that will help out mental outlook enough to get us over the hump. -
My "three week stall" started at two weeks and lasted almost 5 weeks even though I was exercising, getting protein, water, etc. And then I lost 15 lbs very quickly and the scale is still moving, just not quite as fast. Just give it time, it WILL happen if you follow the guidelines.

Post-Op Diet Progression
lollyfidy1965 replied to sid_n_reagans_mommy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on what my surgeon calls "full modified liquids" for the next 4 weeks (give or take). That includes all CLEAR liquids (waters, jello, broths...any liquid you can see through is considered "clear"), as well as things that aren't "clear," but are liquid, or liquid-like...sugar-free puddings, protein shakes, protein powder mixes, cream soups (they may need to be strained to get any little chunks out before drinking), THIN Cream of Wheat/Rice/etc, WHIPPED cottage cheese (I have to thin this with a little sugar-free fruit juice). My instructions are to ensure I get 60-80 grams of protein (through protein shakes, powder mixes, gelatin 20, etc), then I can add non-protein items, such as pudding. I have a schedule that runs hourly (essentially), alternating between 8 ounces of water, and a "food" (protein shake, broth, pudding, etc). So far its working really well. I've been able to get more than the minimum amount of protein in, and well more than the minimum amount of water (at least 64 ounces). Hopefully your surgeon/practice has some diet guidelines they can provide to you, as well. (I went through the program at Beth Israel Deaconess, in Boston...is an amazing program, with lots of support, both pre- and post-op. Best of everything to you! -
Post-Op Diet Progression
Gene1970 replied to sid_n_reagans_mommy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It really depends on the Dr. I was on clears for 2 days post op, then on soft foods like yogurt, cottage cheese, applesauce and the like for 4 more days. On day 7 I was allowed to add in deli chicken or turkey, canned chicken, any seafood, soft cooked veggies, canned fruits, Babybel cheese, oatmeal, etc... about the only restriction I have is to stay away from red meat, pasta, rice, and potatoes until 2 months. When I had my 1 week meeting with the Dr. he just said to progress my diet as I felt comfortable but at 2 months everything would be completely healed and I could eat just about anything. -
I can only take liquid tylenol and I am 3 weeks out.

I just had surgery a little over a week ago, and I'm pretty close to your age. For me, telling the people closest to me was a big relief. I initially made my pre-op appointments without telling a soul. I had everything planned out and set in stone. When it came time to telling my parents I was terrified of what they would say, if they would support me or not. But I was really surprised! It took a little bit of convincing for my dad, but in the end he said, "I just want you to be happy, and if this will make you happy, then I'll stand by you." I can't tell you how important it was for me to have my mom and dad with me on the day of my surgery last week. I can't imagine going through it without them. You need all of the support you can get right now! In my opininon, you should definitely tell both of your parents. Yes, you are an adult and you don't HAVE to tell them, but I think you'll feel better if you do. Give them a chance, maybe they WILL support you. Also, is it fair to have one parent know, and not the other? It's a lot to ask for one parent to keep a secret from another. Either way, the other parent is going to find out. Why not tell them now? So you can have complete and total peace on your surgery day. Either way you decide, best wishes to you!

Sorry to ask this here, but I’m scared. I don’t know what to do or have anyone else to ask. I’m what I call “irregularly regular”. Irregular in the sense that I never know when I’m going to get my period. Regular in the sense that it always lasts for 3.5 days, four at tops. Last month, I got my period and it lasted for almost two weeks. That has never happened to me before. I figure it might have to do with my recent weight gain (about 30 pounds since July) and the related hormone changes. I haven't felt "healthy" for a while now. After my period ended, I was fine for about two weeks. Then I got my period again. I’ve had it now for over a week and it’s very heavy and there’s more …”material” than before (not a ton but noticeably more). I’ve had a little bit of dizziness – my shrink says that’s a side effect of Wellbutrin, but over the weekend, I had a few dizzy spells. (Haven’t had one since, though.) I did some research on the internet and though my flow is very heavy (for me) I’m not changing my pad every 6 hours, so maybe it’s not that an extreme a case. I think the blood loss has made me a little anemic and caused a little of the fatigue and dizziness so I started taking an Iron supplement today. I had a little bit of cramping yesterday and today, but I took an Aleve and I’m fine. There’s no pain or anything otherwise weird. I just can’t seem to stop bleeding. I’ve just about convinced myself that I have cervical cancer or something. As far as I know, none of this runs in my family. I haven’t been to see a doctor, mostly because I’m chicken. I’m 31 and have never had a gyno exam. (I rationalized it by saying I’ve never been sexually active, so I didn’t need to.) I’m also in a tricky situation because my company switched to a new health insurance carrier effective Jan. 1, but Blue Cross is taking forever to do the paperwork, so I don’t have a member number, a group number, a PCP, or anything. I’m waiting for it any day now, but who knows how long it will take them? I’m really scared, but apparently not scared enough to be smart about this because the second I have my insurance info I’m going to see the PCP about a referral to bariatrics. I’m afraid to mention it to my doctor because she will be someone I’ve never met and she may want to do all kinds of history and testing on me before she’s willing to do any kind of referral. I’m all twisted up in knots. Have any of you experienced anything like this? Any advice would be much appreciated.

When you say irregularly regular - how OFTEN do you normally get the visit? I had a thing when I was about your age - where I spotted EVERY DAY when I went into work. (I figured work was killing me). The end result was that due to having periods no more than QUARTERLY for many years - the lining in my uterous had built up and it was trying to clean itsself out. (I, also, had convinced myself I was probably dying of cervical cancer). The current stress I was experiencing had triggered the process. Go - get the girlie exam - and be prepared for the cure. What they do is give you a hormone supplement - which will make you bleed profusely with more "material" for weeks. Oh Joy. The good news is that with any luck at all, you aren't dying - and once you complete the Cure process, you should flip back to normal. Good Luck!! Let us know what the doc says.

Hi there, I posted on the forums for a while after I got banded almost a year ago. Then, in about July I suppose, I kinda fell off the bandwagon. Losing weight with the band got harder and harder. I could eat way more than I thought I'd be able to eat. Admittedly there were times I used that to my advantage. I rarely felt any real restriction, even with a third fill and my doctor insisting that my band was almost to the point of being "too restrictive." I lost a total of 20 pounds post-op before I plateaued. Now, almost a year later, I am 4 pounds over my surgery weight. Part of my problem is, I have concerns about my doctor's level of post-op attention. He quit working with the fill center he was contracted with and now he does his own fills without barium or xray. To be honest I don't even know what my fill level is (it is higher than the amount listed in my sig). Back in Sept when I saw him last, he wanted me to start writing everything I ate into a journal. Well I finally started doing that about 4 weeks ago. I still feel like I can eat too much in one sitting. Definitely more than the 1 cup I was told would make me feel full. I was hoping the band would make me unable to do this. It hasn't. And now I don't know if I should go back to my doc or if I should try and find another doc.I really liked the fill center before I stopped going there, but I'd have to change doctors to go there. I'm pretty embarrassed, to be quite honest.

Protein/Caloric/Fat intake
healthysue replied to Eeyore's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am right with you Eyeore, my stats are almost exactly the same. I have been getting discouraged because i am still on the liquid phase of recovery and in the past week my scale did not move AT ALL. Its very upsetting. And if it was not for my band and my recovery, I would have blown my diet already and then be feeling guilty that i failed again. But I have been following my doctors instructions and I just keep saying to myself no matter what in time it will come off. I am still healing and have not had a fill yet. Good Luck and hang in there you may all of the sudden see a nice weight loss. -
Honestly I would wait. If you get filled to quickly what happens when there is nothing left to fill. I would say wait it out for a little while. Once you are completely filled there is nothing to work with and then if you dont lose your stuck with a full band and nothing else to do. Three times in three months is too much.

I actually never had heartburn and assumed the prilosec was doing it's job. I am no longer on it and can eat anything without getting heartburn so it has not been a problem for me. I would give my system time to settle down and if it doesn't go away I would definitely call the surgeon next week. I am sure they have something to give you. As far as treating just the symptom. I don't believe banding gives you long term heartburn unless you are already prone to it. I never had heartburn to begin with therefore, I don't have the problem. If you already had it to begin with, it may be a sign of a deeper issue and you may want to consult with your PCP.

Band Leakage at 4 1/2 months post-op I need help!!
Banded091307 replied to Banded091307's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hello, Before your doctor does the surgery they can request a fluoroscopy study. When they do this they will insert contrast into your band while you are under x-ray and then they will be able to see where exactly the leak is. It can be common to have a leak in the port or the tubing connection. The leak/whole I had actually was on the band itself. I have seen three surgeons and none of the three have seen a leak in this spot. Depending on where the leak is at will depend on the type or surgery needed. If the leak is in the tubing/port then it can be pretty simple, if it is beyond the connection point in the tubing or on the band then the entire band, tubing and port need to be replaced. I hope that this makes sense. Of course depending on where the leak is at will impact the cost. By doing the fluoroscopy you will know where exactly the leak is and be able to plan better. Also, if the entire device needs to be replaced you may decide to convert to a VSG, etc. I had looked at revising to a VSG, but in the end decided no VSG and I didn't get a new band in either. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me. -
Has anyone gotten instructions on how much protein, calories and fat is appropriate after the healing phase? I'm struggling to lose any weight at all - I've been trying to make healthier choices and increase my exercise but I can't seem to get anything moving and it is really making me upset. I'm even afraid to go in next week for my 2nd fill as I haven't lost a single pound and fear my dr. is going to be mad at me.

Sorry you are feeling down. Fast food was a real dowfall for me too. I was pretty good at not buying junk at the store, but would go out for fast food instead of eating the healthy stuff I bought. I find since I haven't had it in so long, I don't miss it very much. I would just go cold turkey and break the habit. Just tell yourself fast food is not an option for you. That's what I did anyway. Also, are you excersising? It has so many benefits, just one being weight loss. It's tough to start, but it will become a matter of routine. It took me about 4 months post op to hit the gym. Now I go about 5 days a week. Good luck, you can do it!

I just made my own last week for my husband.. since we had a fresh basil plant. Mmm I used the fresh mozz. too and a little sauce. Really good and thin/crisp. I used a pillsbury pizza dough from the dairy aisle and it was okay. But I'll bet a homemade one is even better. Gonna check it out, thanks!

I am almost 2 weeks post op. I'm feeling great and just started soft foods, thank goodness! Just today, I starting feeling sad that I may never enjoy food again. I don't want to feel sorry for myself and I know these feelings all tie in to my issues/addiction/dependency to food. However, will I ever enjoy eating again even though I will be eating much less? Just wondering.... Thanks for your help!

I don't know what to do! It's been over a month and the scale isn't moving! Actually, it's gonna UP a couple of pounds! My question is, is it NORMAL to be at a stall for THIS long??

Eating too much?
Pandemonium replied to MagentaMom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your concerns are very common ones that folks encounter in the first weeks after surgery. You haven't done anything wrong. Water and liquids will pass through your pouch easily, so being able to drink that much is nothing unusual. You just don't want to guzzle your liquids too quickly. That's where things can go badly. As for food, I also didn't feel much restriction in the pureed phase, though I made sure to not exceed 4 ounces because I didn't want to test things. Again...pureed foods are going to pass through a bit more quickly than solid foods will because they are soft and generally more liquid-y. As soon as I started in on soft foods, I started feeling the restriction come into play. Suddenly 3 ounces of soft fish or chicken made me feel full. I am at the point where I can do about 4 ounces of soft food, but not consistently. Sometimes I feel full sooner and that tells me to stop. I haven't been given the okay to start in on regular foods yet (another week or so!), but from listening to experiences of other users on this site, regular foods you will feel that restriction more acutely and quickly since those foods will linger in your pouch. -
That's amazing weight loss. You'll see about 2 LBS per week being the "norm" as I've observed from viewing all the postings. Remember it took you years to get to your highest number, even with surgery It's not going to disappear overnight. And you still gotta work at it. Healthy diet, Exercise All that good stuff. Kuddos on the progress so far. Pretty awesome!

my doc said 6 weeks for workouts.

Hi Becky, I think you found the best site around for help, answers, and general support. I cannot help you in giving you a time line from seminar to surgery. I went through a couple of insurance denials, prior to making the decision to go self pay in Mexico. Once I made that decision tho, it was just a matter of about 3 weeks. I did do a pre-op diet, however in comparison to some of the other banders on here, mine was very simple. I had a high protein, low fat diet for the week prior to surgery. I would suggest following the seminar, giving yourself time to get supplies together, get some liquid protein, and some variety of liquids, so you do not have to spend the first days shopping for necessities. You can also do some taste testing of protein shakes, or bars, and get an idea of what you like before needing it. I found a couple of items I felt helped me. For the first weeks after surgery when I was on clear liquids, I used Zero carb Isopure, it comes in a bottle, similar to the Sobe drinks. It has 40g. of protein in one bottle, I would drink half in the morning and half in the afternoon. I bought it at GNC. I also orderd online from a company called Unjury (www.unjury.com). They have a powdered protein mix. I used a lot (still do on occasion) of the unflavored protein powder, I put it in broth, or jello, anything at all. It has 20g. per scoop. Your energy level will remain much higher if you get your protein in followig surgery. You can also use the sugar free flavored syrups, to help some of the OTC vanilla protein shakes. I love some of the DaVinci and Torani syrups. I have been using them this summer to make popsicles....keeps me cool, and is handy when the munchies hit!! I had a very easy time with surgery, no serious pain, no gas issues. Was up and shopping within days. I have lost over 30 pounds now since then end of April. I have had one fill. I use a Dr. here in the states for follow up. I would recommend this surgery to my own Mother or Daughter if I felt it was something they needed. My only regret so far is in waiting so long to do it. It is a wonderful thing to feel control again! Good Luck to you. Once again I feel this is a great site. Ask anything, there are sooooo many knowledgeable people on here! Welcome!! Kat

The Day Before My First Meeting With Dr. Malley
LovelyOne posted a blog entry in LovelyOne's Journal
I'm eatin today LOL. Jeff fixed chicken fried steak, cream gravy, hashbrowned potatoes, and three eggs. Lunch, leftover hashbrowned potatoes. Snack, baked ziti. I'm nervous about tomorrow. I saw something on a website that says the average person only loses 47% of their weight with the surgery but that would be 150 pounds roughly and that seems like a darn good start. Hopefully things will go good tomorrow. My appointment is at 3:45. :clap2: I remember Optifast. I remember hairloss. I just want health now. I was diagnosed Friday with Type II Diabetes and I don't see Dr. Joslin for that until Wednesday. Today is Sunday, Mother's Day. I haven't called Mom yet but between what I can't tell her, Diabetes and Surgery, not much to say right now except thanks for being my mom. That's enough I think
