Much slower weight loss when revision from lapband to bypass
vita428 replied to Pinkgirl1234's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My doctor told me revisions lose slower. I'm just happy to be losing again Sent from my XT1254 using the BariatricPal App -
I had that happen because my mom and aunt had gastric bypass so the rest of the family figured I couldn't eat whatever I wanted to eat. You really can't win. If I eat something that's not really good for me at a big family get together I get policed. If I don't eat a lot I get people trying to force me to eat more even though I'm full. Even my mother will sit there when I'm eating and go "remember to CHEW CHEW CHEW IT UP!!!!! CHEW IT UP GOOD NOW!" like I'm 2 years old. I just shoot a mean glance and ignore it now but it was awful for the first couple months.

So so frustrated and feeling like a failure
mindyloohoo posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my revision all in one surgery on July 14th. Did good the first ten days out, lost 15. Then the hunger set in. After reading on here about an acid blocker, I went back on the one sent home with me after surgery, didn't help. Moved on to nexium, nope no luck, am now on to OTC proposed, two pills, totally 40mg a day. Am still feeling the knowing feeling in my stomach. You know like how iy feels when you realize you've gone too long without eating.I have to stay under 1000 calories a day and still no weight loss, I can go for about a week before breaking down and just eating. That's the other problem too, I am feeling no restriction what so ever. This is my second was surgery and I feel like such a failure. -
I ate a solid too early...need ideas to be prepared. Please help...

Hi M N_thin 0211 No, that wasn't a helpful post and hopefully you are not completely discouraged. For me I could not tolerate the Protein shakes (it didn't matter how it was "doctored" up). I lived off Water and very small amounts a Protein Shakes for the first two/three weeks. I was not a happy camper. Do you like clam chowder? I sipped the liquid and left the chewable parts. Week three I was also nibbling on mozzarella sticks. Ask your doctor if It's ok for you. I'll admit, I didn't ask, during week three I just did it (it was on my approved list). I chewed it so well it was basically evaporating in my mouth. That was really the only thing I could eat (and I have never been a cheese person). My doctor did tell me I could have smoothies. I understand every doctor is different, but my doctor was all for it. I bypassed the pureed stage by drinking smoothies and shakes (i looked up different nutritious smoothies) and occasional mozzarella cheese sticks. I will never find pureed anything appealing . You'll be ok, don't worry you won't fail. It's a stumbling block, goodness knows I have stumbled. Nothing is the same for everyone. Only you know your body and what you can tolerate. Chin up cricket!!! You'll find your groove . Good luck to you, and happy journey. -
What was your Post-Op diet schedule?
MissieLyn posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor says I'm going to be on 1 week liquid, 1 week full liquid, then 2 weeks pureee. I was just curious on what everyone else had for a schedule. The gal I talked to kept confusing me with the bypass patients and their diet so I'm going to confirm with them tomorrow. -
Best thing you can do is let it go in one ear and out the other. When you get a text, just text back, "good for you!", or "congrats!", and leave it at that. I know it's difficult, but that's probably all you can do. I have a "frienemy" like that. Years ago she had gastric bypass surgery (after I had lost 165 lbs, no pills, no surgery) and no - she is not thin by any stretch of the imagination. I wasn't going to tell her I was having Lap-Band surgery, but one day when I was talking about a difficult time I was having with my husband she just blurted out, "Why don't you go get weight loss surgery?!" That had nothing to do with the conversation, but that happens to be her recommended cure-all for whatever is troubling anyone who is overweight. LOL! Since she thinks she is such an authority on everything, I happen to tell her I had already gone through all of my pre-op requirements including the 4 month waiting period and was already on the surgery schedule. Now, I wish I had not done that. When I do hear from her, the first question is not "Hi, how are you?", but, "So, how much weight have you lost and will I be jealous?" I want to tell her that it's well within her power to lose weight and she knows what to do, especially considering she had surgery, but I don't. I just tell her how much I have lost and be done with it. She's clueless about how the Lap-Band even works. The most important thing to remember is that it doesn't matter how much your sister gains or loses or how she does it. You must keep focused on your goal and ignore her. Stay focused, put your blinders on (in regards to your sister) and as they say, keep your eyes on the prize! She's just scared she'll be the really be the "big" sister (if you know what I mean), while everyone oohs and aahs over your weight loss and new look. If you ask me she's acting more like the baby and less like a big sister right now. Just let it go.

I've had very good luck with the band, having lost 100 pounds. Had a revision 18 months ago. Band slipped. I think the PA over filled it. This band has given more trouble than first, nausea, vomiting. Never heartburn, though. Nevertheless, tests indicate Barretts esophagus. Doctor prescribed a proton pump inhibitor, which helps a lot. Have learned that I have a structure l(auto correct won't let me type s t r I c t u r e, insisting that it is structure) at bottom of esophagus. Won't know more until G I guy returns from vacation in Feb. Fear he'll say band must come out and I'll gain 110 pounds.

Anyone Banded In Belgium W/dr Dillemans?
anon replied to lucyinuk's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Nope I was banded in Paris with Dr Anfroy, because of the cost issue. I believe that Dr Dillemans is a very skilled surgeon, but be prepared for him to say that you might do better with an RNY (Gastric bypass) so do a bit of homework before you go and be sure that you're making the right decision for you. my surgeon wants to call me because he thinks the bypass is better for me
pmmegm replied to andielmt's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think you should try a third opinion as well. If she "prefers" the bypass, then it's possible that she's just more familiar with it. Doesn't necessarily mean it's the right one for you. Talk to as many people as you can.....read read read this web site. I encouraged you to inform yourself about BOTH surgeries. Then YOU can make an educated decision! Good luck to you! -

5 weeks post op and feeling bouts of nausea during the day...
ChristineR replied to sherrypep's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm assuming you treat a revision like the first time? I would think Prilosec would be a great way to start! My kiddo is on prevacid now and her tummy would randomly hurt on and off during the day before they started her on it. -
BCBC IL changed their web page today ...
biancafg31 replied to thisislou's topic in Insurance & Financing
Well guys, I am afraid I have no good news. Anthem BC/BS denied my appeal level 1 as “investigational”. Surprise, surprise, right? Even after I have all my papers, letters from my doctors that stated that I need to take NSAID and my surgeon office provide medical researches on my behalf, no dice. Now I am fighting with them to let me bypass Appeal level 2 and go direct to Independent external review appeal witch I believe would be my best bet. I feel that Appeal level 2 will provide the same results since Anthem is not looking at your medical problems they are just hiding behind the policy. As I read this panel have three doctors independent of insurance panel that they look @ the medical necessity only. If they rule in your favor, the insurance has to cover your surgery, no questions ask. The whole thing It’s depressing and frustrating especially when all other major insurance companies already updated their policy to include sleeve. But I am still not giving up. -
Revision and self pay people that have used Dr. Castro can you tell me about the way he does his band to sleeve revisions? Does he remove the band and do the sleeve at the same time? Is the surgery done lapproscopic? What kind and how long of a preOp diet? I'm self pay...anyone self pay that can tell me how fast the process took since we don't have to just through insurance hoops? Also..which pre testing does he require. I am looking into make an appt. with him but I want to ask before I waste my time and money if some of his qualifying isn't quite what I can afford. Thanks to all and good luck in your journey.

Hello all - new poster. 11 days post op for my gastric sleeve, spent the first seven days post op on liquids only and have been on a pre-select soft food diet for the past 5 days (oh what fun). Coming up with more and more odd combinations of refried bean, greek yogurt, egg white, sugar free pudding, and cottage cheese. Sad what passes for an "omelet" at the moment. Something odd I noted almost immediately upon arriving home was my sense of smell, particularly with regard to how foods smell, seem particularly altered. Have a household that has always enjoyed cooking and have done so several times for my lady as a thank you for how well she has been nursing me and the aroma of the foods is just nowhere near as full as pre op. Is this common? At least one other full bypass patient at my 1 week check in mentioned a similar change. Is it permanent or something that changes over time? Thanks all - and best of luck to all those on or getting ready for the same journey.

With bypass it cures severe Gerd/Reflux. I know this because I had it so severe that I was coughing everyday violently regardless of what I was eating. I was on the max doses of reflux medications. There was no where else for me to go that is why I had RNY bypass. Along with many other comorbitities. I have had very few instances of dumping and they were mild. It happens when you eat too much sugar or too much fat at one time. You learn quickly what causes it and you don't do those things. I literally can eat anything I want. That does not mean that I should nor do I. On occasion I have a small treat as does most of us. Soon after this surgery you tend to crave things like good Proteins and good carbs because they make you feel great. I do not like anything overly sweet and I used to be a sugarholic! Your tastes simply change. There are a few foods that I no longer tolerate, eggs and bread for me just do not sit well. They make me uncomfortable so I stay clear of them. If I miss anything I miss a simple sandwich with bread but I am ok having other things instead.
-
the food aversion isn't uncommon - that goes away over time. I agree with Arabesque that it could be a stricture. They happen to about 5% of bypass patients (can also happen in sleeve patients, although it's much less common) and you're in the right window for it - they almost always occur 1-3 months after surgery. I'm really shocked your surgeon's office would respond the way they did. You CAN live without food for awhile (but not forever..), but when it gets to the point you can't even keep fluids down, that's a huge problem. People can't live without fluids for long. If you can't keep fluids down, I'd go to the ER. if this is a stricture, it's an easy fix.

Got my surgery Date - December bandster
tonya66 replied to beversman's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I've noticed where I live, commercials are starting to run all the time about the Lap-Band, and before, it was never mentioned. Also, the doctor I am seeing is primarily a Gastric Bypass doctor, but he said the lap-band has gotten so popular, he has to have a separate seminar for it - he used to combine them. So I can tell the popularity is catching on - which I think is great! -
How much can you eat.....
lianna replied to cher3150's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I probably eat about a cup per meal. I can eat a whole bowl of Quaker weight smart oatmeal for breakfast, I can eat most or all of a Lean Cuisine for lunch, 4oz of chicken or steak with some brocolli or grean beans for supper. I think I err on the side of having looser restricion (and therefore a little slower weight loss) but I am happy that I have no issues like heartburn, PB's, or sliming so I find it is what works for me! I dont see how ANYONE can get adequate nutrition from 3 meals that are only 1/4 cup. I think even bypass patients can eat more than 2oz at a time! -
Calcium Carbonate v Calcium Citrate
RestlessMonkey replied to RestlessMonkey's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I found the "petites" at my local grocer and will try to remember to take them...They should work, and they are "citrate". Thanks for all the tips; I bet, like other things I'm finding out about my surgeon nutritionists recommendations, that the citrate is more important for by pass patients than we bandsters. I hate being lumped in with bypass patients....we each have our own set of issues etc. I'm sure they don't want to follow "band rules" anymore than I want to be treated like a bypass recipient! But the petites look like a great solution for now and I'll follow up with my doc when I get my first fill 10/9 (YAY) Thanks to every one of you for your answers, insights, and humor! -

Yeah...that dietitian (the hairy eyeball woman, as I like to think of her LOL) kept getting us lap banders and the bypassers confused. She kept thinking I had GBS...I am pretty thick skinned but after the 5th time in 30 minutes I started to take offense LOL I'm going to buy viactiv. So there! :tt1: -
October 2010 Bandsters!!
PuppyBandit replied to Sarah71407's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery is scheduled for October 7th. Tomorrow (Sept 8) is my pre op appointments and I will find out what I have to do as far as how long on liquid diet. My friend had the same doctor and got gastric bypass and only had to do 3 day liquid diet. I hope I'm lucky and only have to do 3 days also. Some people here have my admiration that they were able to do liquid diets for such a long time. Here are some ideas: October Orchids Outstanding October -
October 2010 Bandsters!!
mnguest replied to Sarah71407's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Do I tell my sister about my surgery or not? She is a very negative person and had gastric bypass 5 years ago and still suffers from throwing up and is pretty miserable. I dont need any negativity around me and I want this to be a success!!! Help! -
Matt, my personal doc cried when I asked for a Gastric Bypass referral. That's when I started finding out about the band. She had never heard of it, so I've gotten her up to date. She's thrilled now because my blood pressure is normal and I'm no longer borderline diabetes. It's all a matter of personal opinion.

Doctor Says its a no-go - Any solutions?
Sunny112 replied to nr-vsg2be's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was just banded this past Thursday, May 24th. Doc found a hiatal hernia when he began the surgery, so he stopped and repaired the hernia & then proceeded with the banding. Prior to my banding, I had quite alot of acid reflux & was on Omprazole for it. Doc was aware of that and never mentioned anything about that disallowing me to be a good candidate for the band. I would see another doc & get another opinion before I switched gears to the bypass. Good luck & keep us updated on your progress! -
While in the process of getting ready for surgery an Upper GI test disclosed a slight Hiatal Hernia which causes reflux. I've never been symptomatic ( no heatburn or pain) nor take any medication for the condition. The diagnosis was a complete surprise. My surgeon informed me that this condition eliminates me from being a candidate for lap-band. When asked if there is anything I can do to repair address the reflux she indicated that if i do not have an symptons then I should not do anything for the condition. She also indicated that if I still wanted to have bariatric surgery RoutenX bypass is still an option and it would eliminate the reflux. Any advice or experience with dealing with this condition? My sense is my surgeon does mostly gastric bypass procedures and believes its a better option and is very reluctant to explore working around the Hiatal hernia. I live in Northern Cal so if anyone knows of other surgeons that I can consult with I would appreciate it. thank you from "sad and disappointed"
