    Daily Menus for Maintenance

Today, Sat, Nov. 2 Maintenance : 5'2" / 1yr PO Sleeve / 113.7 lbs ...had coffee with the BFF tonite and finally got my hands on some Halloween candy from HER leftover pile (since my own household stash mysteriously disappeared yesterday - I know who you are Mr.!) I'm surprised I haven't dumped, though I do feel moderately ick at the moment. My stomach is doing that gurgly lactose-intolerant rumbling thing, so I know I'm going to have a visit from the poop-fairy soon. Which I actually don't mind as I've been waiting for her for 3 days now... 11:00am - coffee w/ Stevia 12:30pm - salad greens + pumpkin seeds + almonds + can of smoked oysters w/ seafood sauce + 1/4 cup of Campbell's Chunky Clam Chowder (minus the potatoes) 2:00pm - 1/2 cup mixed nuts + turkey jerky + 1 Keto Snaps Choco-Coconut-Fat-Bomb 5:30pm - salad greens + olive oil + carrots + almonds + can of smoked oysters w/ seafood sauce + turkey jerky + 1/3 cup Raspberry Lime sorbet 10:30 - Starbucks Grande Americano Misto w/ Soy + 4 fun-size Reese's peanut butter cups + 1 fun-size Oh Henry + 1/8 moon cake Totals: 2306 cals - 104g Protein - 141g NET carbs - 133g fat

    Food Before and After Photos

Keto coconut/pysllium flour tortillas/wraps (I posted the video a few pages ago, but@FluffyChix may have pioneered the recipe in her blog years ago I think remember her saying correct me if I'm wrong) L. I. S. T. E. N. Many may not know this but I absolutely can not handle bread after my RNY conversion. NBD. didn't really eat much any ways except once a year and a small piece during kiddush I digress... So I decided to try this alternative yesterday and because of this fiber filled monster, I was FULL FOR HOURS AND HOURS AND HOURS 😳 (I ate about 1/3 of it) Oh the Salmon Croquette may have helped 😂 So yesterday I basically only had chia pudding and this 😒

    Fish & chips?

Now I know fish and chips aren't considered healthy. I've done keto for about 4-5 months now, had Gastric bypass 10/21, looking forward to getting back to keto because I do like that lifestyle (when I can eat normal again), but i wanted to treat myself for once, does anybody know if fish and chips will digest properly 4 weeks post op(soft food stage)? Those last 14 lbs....

Intermittent fasting knocked down the last 15 pounds for me. There are LOTS of threads on IF on this forum. Lots of us have used (or are using) one form or another. It is a powerful tool, not difficult, and actually very healthy for you. I am not sure keto is the way to go, as the fat content is so high. With bypass, we already have fat absorption issues, and I know my intestines are not happy with too much fat. Also, your liver has worked very hard to process all the fat you have already lost. You might have had fatty liver disease, as I did, before surgery. From what I have read, adding more fat for the liver to work on is not a great idea. IF gives you the benefit of ketones, but without the high fat diet.

    Those last 14 lbs....

115 pounds lost is phenomenal. How did you do it? Did you have to adopt a different strategy for the last few pound The last pounds can be painfully slow. We have less body fat to burn. No different diet or strategy . Reaching a lower BMI was not important to me. Its just where I ended up. I wish there was less emphasis on BMI. The goal to me is healthy. You said “The final pounds of weight loss are difficult and - because of the type severe restriction to get there - are not often sustainable” I agree that severe restriction is not sustainable. I did not use severe restriction to get to my BMI. I used bariatic basics and the calories/macros that kept my body in weight loss mode. Many do Bariatric basics, Keto, intermittent fasting, whole 30. Vegan paleo Etc. These are weight loss phase diets. You said "Ketogenic diets are not really recommended long-term for bariatric patients" Maintenance phase diet is a totally different long-term food plan.(ask your office for your plan) My instructions add calories, carbs, and fats to slow/stop weight loss. It’s been sustainable for me at five years out. You said " There's a risk that if I go back to a diet with 'forbidden foods', I may start thinking about it too much again (which - for me - would be counter-productive). You may want to work with a counselor to address this issue. Restricting and thinking about food too much is counter productive. I hope you find your own balance with all this. None of this is easy, right?

    I think I dumped

I'm 7 months out and have been doing well I've lost 100lbs. The other dau I went to blaze pizza and got a keto crust pizza with no sugar sauce and smoked ham with a few veggies. Ate 1 slice (I've done this several times before) the next day yesterday at lunch i ate 1 slice then some watermelon of which I've had before. 2 hours later AT WORK my hands started to shake and my heart rate went to over 100 I felt so weak almost faint I was able to get home and I fell into the bed TERRIFIED. I never had pain, nausea, or loose stool. I laid there in a stupor for about 2or3 hours and it went away. Okay family. WTF was that? Was it the watermelon juice pushing the food thru to fast? What? Please put your thinking caps on because now I have ALL food anxiety!
  11. This is pretty much the list I eat from or try to eat from every day. I never get tired of eating these foods prepared pretty simply. They are in order of importance for me. Veggies/Fruits: dark leafys (arugula, lettuces, spinach, chard, collard/mustard/turnip greens, kale) cruciferous veggie family (cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, kale, bok choy, arugula, Brussels sprouts, collards, watercress and radishes) mushrooms (all kinds but especially crimini, shiitake, white) sugar snap peas, snow peas asparagus leeks, onions, garlic, green onions jicama, Jerusalem artichokes = sunchokes, rutabaga, turnips avocado tomatoes of all kinds lots of herbs low glycemic fruit (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, granny smith apples, pomegranate seeds, lemons, limes) Oils olive oil (extra virgin) avocado oil butter/ghee lard nuts, seeds, nut butters, reduced fat nut flours Eggs/Dairy egg whites eggs dairy (low fat for me) (fat free Greek yogurt plain, 2% cottage cheese, fat free mootopia, Premier Protein RTD drinks, Isopure protein isolate powder, Neufchatel cheese, 2% Kraft Deli Deluxe, 2% cheddar shreds, part skim shredded mozzarella, Boar's Head Lacy Swiss, lite string cheese sticks, light cheese wedges, Twin Peaks protein puffs) Proteins bone broth of all kinds fish/seafood (white fish, salmon, sardines, tuna, shrimp, crab) chicken (breast, ground white meat) turkey (breast, ground white meat, Jimmy Dean turkey sausage crumbles) lunchmeat (Boar's Head turkey/ever roast chicken/lite brunsweiger liverwurst, Hillshire Farms Naturals Black Forest Ham) beef, venison, elk & lamb (any cut you can handle) pork (any cut you can handle) beans/pulses (lentils, garbano, kidney, black, cannelini, non-gmo edamame) Fiber Psyllium Husk Shiritaki Noodles/Rice Chaffles (Keto, homemade)
  12. I am planning on being pretty open about my revision surgery. I know people are going to ask how I've lost so much weight and if I can inspire someone to look into it that may have been thinking about it, great, if they want to judge me, great. I feel like one of my gastric band downfalls was not being open about it. I think had I been more open with everyone I wouldn't have felt the pressure to eat like a "normal" person around people who did not know I was banded. Granted, I don't think that would have eliminated all my band problems, but I can't help but wonder if I would have been somewhat more successful if I had broadcast it to the world. That said, I'm dreading telling my husband's family. I think they are much more likely to be overly judgmental about it than most people in my life. These are people that think doing keto is the easy way out, so I'm sure they'll have plenty to say, but I'm okay with that. I'm really confident in why I am choosing to revise, so I'll do my best to not be offended by it. I'm planning on significantly cutting back my meat consumption with my revision, so I can fall back on that for people I don't feel need to know about surgery.

    Desert substitutes

I ate substitutes sometimes (protein bars, protein cookies, protein chips, protein ice cream, fiber candy, etc) and the real deals in extreme moderation. It has become very easy to find the subs almost everywhere now thanks to the keto phenomenon so I stick to those if I need a dessert.
  15. I'd like to know how you guys feel about having desert like foods. There are really 2 schools of thought: either "everything is OK in moderation" or you abstain 100% because sugar is an addiction. I am 9 months out and I'm still craving sweets despite having stopped all deserts. I dont eat protein bars, no cookies, pie, ice cream, frozen yogurt etc. I am wondering if there is any way I can put out the fire so to speak by allowing myself very small amounts of healthier sweets. I mean, this is for life right? I see a lot of keto deserts online and I wonder who has been able to eat these in moderation and still keep losing. I saw this recipe this morning and it looks amazing but I'm wondering if this is a slippery slope, or a gateway drug to eating real ice cream. I'd like to think I could handle it but who knows. Just FYI I do not dump at all. https://listotic.com/easy-keto-chocolate-frosty/ Any thoughts?

    Whole Food Plant Based Eating

I am just starting to ease into this. There is more than enough protein. My weight will tell me if there are too many carbs, Right now I am having a hard time keeping weight on, especially when I exercise a lot. I am riding in a distance bike race next month and another triathlon in a few months. Also starting some great hiking in this wonderful weather right now. My carbs are all whole foods - cooked grains (teff, amaranth, millet, sorghum, steel cut oats, buckwheat, quinoa), legumes (beans, peas, edamame, palo verde beans, mesquite beans, lentils), and starchy veggies (Sweet potato, butternut squash, carrots, beets). Fats come from avocado, olives, nuts/seeds I cannot begin to eat the volume of fresh veggies/fruit that most people who follow this plan eat. My pouch just can't hold that much. So it is definitely an experiment for me. If I decide this is a good move, I will be consulting with a medical practitioner who specializes in whole food plant based eating, and who is also well versed in bariatrics. WLS throws a curve ball into any eating plan, whether it is Intermittant Fasting, Keto, or WFPB, My highest priorities are to get my protein in, take my vitamins, and eat food that is as nutritionally dense as possible.
  17. Funny how each of us approaches this differently. It’s also a shame that we have to have this conversation. Think about it— if someone were to need surgery to have an appendectomy, a hysterectomy or have a tumor removed or have any other physical condition corrected there wouldn’t be this level of discussion. But WLS is still so judged. No matter where people are— whether they’ve never struggled with obesity or have struggled their entire lives, they will be all over the spectrum from extremely positive to negative. I’m generally a pretty open person, but sharing this is difficult. I too find myself more able to share with complete strangers than with people I’ve known. Maybe bc I don’t have anything invested in the strangers. I’m also a natural empath and I feel like I can read most people when they comment or ask. If one of my patients comments and I can sense that they genuinely care and are concerned (I am after all a cancer survivor and a lot of people know that) then I tell them briefly about the WLS and that I’m “okay” and “not sick again” If I feel as if the person commenting doesn’t deserve the info, then I tell them I’m on a medically supervised diet and exercise regimen. When the inevitable “oh, so you’re doing keto?” comment follows, I nod and tell them “yes” because I don’t eat carbs anyway due to the restriction so I figure that’s as accurate as I need to be. There are some patients I have who are MO and weirdly enough, many of them don’t ask. Maybe they already know, but I think mostly they understand the burden of MO and know better than to ask or comment. Almost every single of my close friends are MO, and they all knew. Sadly most of them are avoiding my right now, but that’s the topic of another thread and I’m working my way through that

    Over this preop diet

Vent away. It's a right of passage. Totally sucks big ones. But gosh, aren't you glad you are going through the "keto flu" now instead of during surgery recovery? That would totally stink!

    Pre op nausea

When I did Keto, there was an expression that when you started you got the "Keto Flu" which was getting sick from cutting out all those carbs. They recommended vegetable broth and pickle juice to help get over it!
  20. I feel like people are judgmental no matter how someone loses weight. I've gotten negative responses in the past from doing both Keto, Medifast, and even WW. A few years ago I dropped 75lbs and when people asked me, I just said in a joking manner "I stopped eating! It sucks!" Ha ha!

    Food Before and After Photos

I make a quart jar of this up at a time, then keep it in the freezer like Panko. It works obscenely well on everything breaded. I'm very biased with my recipe cuz although it uses more ingredients, each one adds to the experience to make it more like the real thing. https://fluffychixcook.com/keto-crumbs-low-carb-gluten-free-breadcrumb-mix/ I then use either a light coating of mayo to adhere them or I mix some mayo into egg whites to adhere it. And if you want to try double breading, I use whey protein powder mixed with a little parmesan as the first coat. The other tip is instead of rolling the meat in the breading, I use an empty Tone's Parsley bottle (big) that has big holes in it and shake the breading over the "wet" surface of the meat/veg. Here's the recipe index page if you want to look at some of the bread/tortilla/cracker recipes. Back in the day I was known for my bread-like subs along with the tortillas, crackers, cornbread, muffiny, cakey things. https://fluffychixcook.com/recipes/recipe-index/

Gastric Sleeve after 50 (Senior Sleevers)

My son also has the same schedule. What you need to do is look into Keto high protein foods. My son says he's never eaten more than when he switched to Keto diet for his type 1 diabetes. He's always got jerky, cheese, almonds on hand. Most grocery stores carry protein foods and so does Amazon. I drink Ensure Max 30 g of protein and they fill me up. Protein foods fill you up, carbs spike your sugar and make you hungry in no time. Keep a small baggy of almonds around to eat or jerky with cheese. Is it easy, some days better than others. But living with obesity and food being your best friend is fun either. You can do it if you focus on what you can do and eat rather than what you can't do. Browse the keto, high protein section in your markets you may be surprised. They even have ice cream. You can do it.
  24. Yeah..same with me on any carbs...fruit, oatmeal, etc. I had done keto (under 20 grams a day) for 15 months prior to talking to Cigna about surgery..and my dr is supportive of low carb/keto; however, he did want me to change things up as I'm a very slow loser. I figure I have to at least try to follow what his plan is...so I'll just keep following the macros he set which has me at 60 grams a day for carbs...80 grams for protein, and 27 grams for fat. It's an 800 calorie a day (or less I guess) plan with 40% coming from protein; 30% coming from carbs and 30% coming from fat. Fluffychix recognized what it was right off...I just seem to forget even more things each day.
