Dr. Blumenthal in Providence?
Matt Z replied to dutchamy's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I believe you mean Dr. Aaron B. Bloomenthal. I went to Dr. Beth Ryder for both my band in 2011 and my revision to bypass this past March. Dr. Bloomenthal's reviews look good. -
Cycling 101 Miles, hoping lapband to do not slip again.
Cycle4life posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I signed up to cycle this Saturday. Last year my lapband sipped while doing a marathon. I am concerned it may slip again but I really want to do this before my revision to sleeve. Any advice or suggestions are welcome, I know I am a newbie on site and do not know a lot of folks but I am asking for some input from anybody who reads this. Thanks -
Hi, I am new and have not yet had surgery. I have also experienced what seems to be resistance to Lap Band here in Columbus. Riverside/Myers wants to do bypass as does Mt. Carmel group. Does anyone know if some of these "revised" lap bands have made a difference in the physician attitude toward lap band? Do you kow why they prefer bypass?

Tell me why the band is good or bad?
brandyII replied to CHER123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm a sweet craver, partially due to my medications (anti-depressants) and partially due to my diabetes II and basically "ME". I have had the band over nine months and due to gaining back most of the weight I lost on the pre-op liquid diet (25 big ones!) I decided to get a partial unfill to stop or help control the urge I have to "eat around the band" with sweets. It has not been an easy journey for me but I see my doctor tomorrow and may get a partial fill to tighten my band a bit again. I was afraid to get gastric bypass so changed at the last minute probably because I knew I was a sweet eater and was afraid I'd get dumping syndrome in a place it wasn't appropriate, meaning anywhere besides my own home. I guess either I was misinformed or not informed enough to know that most sweets (except donuts as they're doughy) will go right through the band because of the right amount of fat and sugar ease through. Also chips do too as one poster stated but not an issue for me. My daughter had gastric bypass because she researched and found it to be right for her even though she is not a sweet eater like her mom. She is only post-op one week + one day so I really can't speak to you about her success but has in the past 7 weeks taken off more than 40 pounds. I myself am still wavering and won't change my marker until I get weighed at the surgeon's office. Hopefully it will go down. that's not an angry face but a down emphasizer. Anyway it's probably one of the toughest decisions of your life, as there usually are many but I wish you luck with it. I'm still trying and don't know what will happen to me in the future if I'll live as I am or if I'll revise or what. It's all up in the air but I have recently changed my anti-depressants to see if this new one will affect me in a more positive way when it comes to sugar cravings. Good luck to you and learn as much as you can from the people here as they know more than most books will tell you and they're a great group of nice people!!!brandyII:smile: -
F'd by lapband BIGTIME!
LilMissDiva Irene replied to SpeedyCheeks's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi Speedy, I am a former lap bander too. Though I wasn't cursed with the bad scar tissue, which is a miracle since I had mine for almost 3 years. My problem was it was simply ineffective on me. I was never once able to find my sweet spot. .2cc and I was too tight, then .25cc removed and I could eat a horse. Tell me how I'm supposed to concentrate on losing when my find is filled with regrets like that? I initially lost 55 Lbs with it, but honestly I don't give any credit to the band. I did all of that myself while I was constantly being adjusted. I guess I just gave up trying because I gained it all back. I also got those awful night coughs from being too tight for too long. I got tired of all the fills/unfills... LOL I seriously had about 21 adjustements in the entire time I had the band. Anyway, here I am nearly 7 months out and revised to sleeve. I really love my sleeve. REALLY!!! It is everything I wanted out of my band and then some. I will pray for you that your stomach heals well enough for you to get the sleeve, because I know you would do really well with it. I can tell of your motivation. Blessings, and anytime you need a shoulder we are always here. -
I was banded 11/2014. I was 315lbs before pre op diet and am now 237. I don't exercise so this is all my eating changes. I also had a last minute "maybe I should be getting the sleeve" moment and even made an appointment with my surgeon to ask if I should change. Now if you want to get the sleeve you should. I'm not bashing anyone's WLS decision. But if you have done your research and have made an intelligent decision to get the band don't listen to the hype of other people who don't believe in the band anymore or who had to revise. Because there are plenty of people who revise from sleeve to bypass too! I asked my dr what do I need to do to be success with the band. He said it's easy (my doctor has had a band for over 10 years himself so he is in the best position to tell me). 1. You have to eat slow 2. Show up for follow up appointments the first year at least once a month. It put my mind at ease. I could do that! And I have done that and have been successful. I have had no complications. I have learned to slow down and have not had any stuck issues in months. Read as much as you can and go on you tube and read here and then you will see what is right for you and your personality and talk to your doctor about your concerns. Good luck! I was a wreck right before my surgery. That's totally normal.

Being sleeved 12/21! Lots of questions!
Muneca2000 replied to amandasue's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm being sleeved on dec 21st I in Houston. I also have a hernia and I'm a revision from a band that's 10 yrs old -
I haven't seen my doctor yet, my appointment is scheduled for Wednesday June 4, and I just got confirmation from my insurance that there are no restrictions for the revision from band to sleeve....I'm doing the happy dance right now and excited to hear what my Dr has say on Wednesday, I am hoping for a surgery date at my time of visit (keeping my fingers crossed)

I am about 7 weeks out from having a lower body lift and a medial thigh lift in Tijuana Mexico. I flew to San Diego and was picked up at the airport and then a week later I was taken back for my flight home. I went to Dr. Victor Gutierrez. who not only is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon but he also has a specialty in Micro-Surgery so his incisions and sewing are the best I have seen anywhere. I spent a whole year going to 10 consults with surgeons in Beverly Hills and LA even talking to a well known surgeon deep in Mexico. But was not happy with the results or the prices. Results of course were the main thing, but a couple that I really liked as in the case of the BH, PS were $40,000 so that knocked that one right out the window. Then I saw some of Dr. Gutierrez's patients reviews on another site and checked out his clinic. I found out he was trained in Israel where the standards are some of the highest in the world and also that he is a micro-surgeon so I started reaching out to his previous patients and really liked what I heard, so I took a leap of faith and went with him and I am so pleased. The year before I went to another TJ clinic, it was a big fancy clinic with white marble and glass, and it turns out 2 of the three procedures that were done need to be revised so I was a little gun shy of going back to TJ, but now I am so happy I did. Dr Gutierrez will also be doing the revisions that I need in the future...

F'd by lapband BIGTIME!
SpeedyCheeks replied to SpeedyCheeks's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Wow, there are so many "lap band gone wild" stories that it makes me wonder if they all aren't ticking timebombs waiting to go off. I wish everyone going for their revisions much luck and you will be in my prayers. I went for my post-op follow-up appoinment today and the doc said (because I keep asking) that the absolute soonest he would consider trying a sleeve would be at 2 months out but that's if I get scoped and there is enough stomach tissue to work with; I will be praying ALOT. And if you are feeling like a failure due to the lap band DON'T the band failed us, not the other way around! -
I love my sleeve but my daughter has done really well with RNY. I'm so sorry you had to go thru this and hope things get better and they find a way to revise you to sleeve.

I am afraid my surgery is going to be postponed
Elisabethsew replied to Oregondaisy's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It sounds like your Dad is capable of making his own decisions so he's aware of the consequences. If he's fallen twice and continues to make his own decisions, you can't do anything. I would not put my life on hold waiting to see when the next shoe will fall. If something happens and you're unable to run to his side, your brother, kids, etc. will have to handle things until you are able to tend to them. When I had my surgery, the man who had it the same day that I was there was permitted to leave a day early but it's only 3 nights in the hospital. For me, the recovery from the revision was a lot easier than the banding. Happy Easter/Passover. -
Goal Weight Setting
lauraellen80 replied to SleeveGal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon has not given me a goal weight, either. His PA just gave me the average "excess weight lost" percentage range (60-70%) as an idea of what I could expect to lose. That would have put me between 165 and 175, which is still obese for my height (5'2"). Initially, I chose 145 lbs as my personal goal even though I would have still been in the "overweight" category, because it's a weight that I felt OK at in college, and I simply could not wrap my mind around being any smaller than that. But once I really started losing post-op, I revised my goal to 135 lbs, which put me at the top of the "normal" weight range. I'm now at 128.8, just a few pounds heavier than I was in high school! I had to postpone my 6-month follow up until after the holidays, but I'll see what my surgeon has to say then. @@WL WARRIOR - Where did you find the info about working towards a "set point"? Does Dr. Weiner have a website, or has he put out a book? I'd be interested to learn more! -

Hi @@reachbree! Crossing fingers for you! I also have Blue Shield of CA and I'm so nervous! I'm barely 35 BMI, with PCOS, high cholesterol and insulin resistance and I'm trying to get a revision from lap-band to sleeve. Just curious....
parisshel replied to AuburnDarling's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If this is your plan, I would strongly suggest you consider another form of WLS. The lapband is a "crutch", or "tool" as many will say, without which one is merely dieting (and hungry, frustrated and sad). Many who have had bands removed will testify to regaining the weight lost with the band (plus additional pounds, which is similar to what happens when a non-surgical dieter stops dieting). Most former bandsters on this platform post that when they had their bands removed, they went on to do a revision surgery such as bypass, sleeve or RnY. So based on that, if would suggest that if you plan to get banded, and then have the band removed, you should also include in your plan a budget for revision surgery, or an acceptance for the rebound weight gain. I've never read about a bandster who kept their weight off after band removal. -
Gastric bypass revision. Am I the only one?
Janice Isberg replied to Idramafree35's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am one year post revision. It is much different then the previous one which did not come with support or education. I'm in Alberta Canada and I had a whole team assess me for about 6 months before they determined that a revision was warranted and to get me into a frame of mind that would set me up for success this time. It has been wonderful. I haven't lost as fast as I did the first time but I know that this time I have been able to make the necessary changes and to sustain those changes for the rest of my life. The big difference for me was in working with a psychologist who helped me to understand why this time would be different and successful. I'm now down to a size 16 from size 24 and continue to lose at least 1 pound per week. Doesn't sound like much but I can be patient and ensure that the lose I"m experiencing is sustainable and part of my new normal. -

Well thats good to hear. The lady who I talked to was kind of like "you'll have to talk to this lady to get approval" like it was something bad. She made me really nervous that I wouldn't get approved. She said they only approve revisions on a case by case basis and you have to show that its medically necessary. I meet all of the criteria so I hope it's fine. When I looked up the criteria it said to be medically necessary you have to have a BMI of over 40 or over 35 with co-morbitiies. My BMI is like a 40.1. lol But its over so that should be good enough. I'll just be happy when it's approved. I hate being in the waiting period. -
having trouble breaking 400 calories
California Guy replied to joleza's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
No, I wasn't hungry at all. I had my sleeve done 7 years ago. Just did the revision to modified DS this year. The liquid diet reset my stomach and I was surprised to feel full with such small portions. -
I was also a band to sleeve revision and my surgeon was Dr. Aceves. I had all the same issues you had with the band. I also could have had a surgeon do my revision here close to my hometown for about the same cost but I chose Dr. Aceves because I felt like he was way more experienced at these revisions than the surgeons here. I had very similar band issues as you. I am so glad that it is gone and I am feeling great. Best of luck to you!

Travel after surgery
Cycle4life replied to losing100#'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello, you should be fine. Just make sure you make stops along the way to walk and not gas up so much:) I had the lapband and was up and walking and driving after a week. I had cabin fever, just listen to your body. Hoping the best for you and recovery. I am flying to Mexico for my revision and will be there 5 days. Traveling from East to West Coast. I have read for me to get up every 45 minutes to walk. -
Gallbladder removal during surgery?
Kaishek replied to Paula'sVSGLife's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery on 12/21/2015 and also had my gallstones and gallbladder at VSG survey. I was also a revision from lapband though not at the same time as surgery. I have tracked my progress against others on the site, and I think having the two major ops together, it might take a little while longer for recovery. I am at 5.5 weeks post surgery and although it has been a struggle to get my fitness back I am getting there, and I would definitely not have wanted two surgeries. -
having doubts about sleeve
CowgirlJane replied to cupcakebarb's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Doubts are healthy. I think you should discuss at length with surgeon as there are pros and cons. There are many successful band patients on this site, but I was banded in 2001, revised to sleeve in 2011, revision being the fate of many people that were banded that long ago. You can fail or succeed with ANY WLS, but it seems some of us had a much harder time finding the "sweet spot" with the band. It is a little trickier, a little higher maintenance but with education, support and willingness to adjust fills, people make it work! -

I am getting my PCP letter and I will write a letter -- so all will be ready for my 7/8 appointment I am optimistic - but realistic but the good news is my insurance pays for a revision - so I am keeping my fingers crossed that he agrees my band problems warrant a revision at this time. How are the other AETNA insurance - revisions gals going with their process? I agree with talking to your mom about how you feel. It can be frustrating when you feel alone. I’m a year post VSG today and 4months post VSG to RNY revision and there are days where the struggle with texture are very real. I just do the best I can. I rely pretty heavily on protein soups, protein bars, and shakes as animal protein doesn’t sit well most of the time. Sometimes I’ll go the plant based protein route with things like impossible burgers or tofu. Hope you find something that works for you.
