How is weight loss for people over 50?

Denise Water coming up while you were sleeping sounds scary. How long did you wait before you got a defill? I don't have any problem with anything coming up when I lay down nor have I had heartburn. I just tried to eat some yogurt but it sends those belches up that is like pbing. I'll go back to liquids. I do fine with cream of mushroom soup. I can even soak a few crackers in it. How long do you think is too long before slippage or erosioin becomes a problem?

Can I see a menu please?

I had a hard time on puree/soft to get enough food and Protein in. I started adding unflavored Protein powder to anything that it would mix into. I froze Syntrax Protein drinks into ice-pop tubes to boost fluids and protein intake. I kept up with the Protein shakes to give myself a good protein base to work from, and added the puree/soft foods on top of that. I ate stuff like refried Beans with cheese, lots of greek yogurt, and made up protein powder with 1/2 the liquid to make pudding. I also found later that Fairlife milk has quite a bit more protein than regular milk, so I've switched to that to boost my intake. It's hard to get all the protein in to start with, and the calories stayed very low for me until I was on a full diet. My doc said my #1 priority is fluids, and my #2 priority is protein, and for the first 2-3 months post-op that's all she wanted me worried about.

Day 4 post op: Able to drink fluids, it's uncomfortable if I go too fast, as I knew, however I now know how fast is too fast for me. I'm walking on the treadmill fairly easily, slow pace, no incline, limited to 15 min at a time. I walked 5 times yesterday, only once so far today and only 5 min according to how I feel. I'm able to eat up to 2 oz at a time, so far I've had Chobani Zero nonfat greek yogurt, tuna pureed with light mayo with pickle juice, and a sugar free pudding mixed with protein powder. All of it has gone fairly well. I haven't vomited, very little nausea, and every day I'm more awake and thinking more clearly. My only issue so far has been a sketchy bladder. I guess of all things that could happen, it's pretty benign, but I had to have a catheter placed to allow my bladder to rest from being stretched too much. I think all the angry innards caused some shifting. In all likelihood it's just a temporary thing that will resolve when some of the swelling goes down. I have some nerve damage from many years ago so it isn't as far out of left field as it could be.

How is weight loss for people over 50?

Sweetviolet You went from a 5x to a 16 OMG That just so Fantastic Nance, I agree with crabcake I think this is pretty normal for right before your first fill. Your appetite returns after the surgery. Getting the fill will help you a lot. I wouldn't be too worried. Enjoy your trip! Green - They do make Linen clothes in smaller sizes too and yes arms and legs ugh i can relate I will be happy 170 - may go for 150 - we will see I used unjury chocolate & unflavored protein powder heres the link Welcome to the UNJURY Homepage - it has 20 grms protein per scoop - i added the unflavored stuff to my soups - but you gotta let them cool a little cant be above 130 degrees - I would also add 1/2 scoop to coffee in the morning - again let it cool some another great way to get your protein in - I also use it with my yogurt & fruit shakes add a scoop of the unflavored and you are good to go... Also my doc sells some proti15 clear liquid drinks - taste great and they have 15 grms pt... i haven't been able to find them on the web - but found some almost the same and they were good here is the links BariWise Fruit Drinks (7 Servings/Box)
  5. Good Morning All! Congratulations and good luck to everyone that's on/heading to the Loser's Bench this week! Day 2 of pre-op diet today. I'm full liquids, so that's 5 protein shakes, 50 calories of clear liquid, 1 cup of strained soup/yogurt/pudding. I'm very tired and have a headache. I'm hoping the fog clears soon.
  6. Hi, all! I had my surgery on August 16th. I’m doing great as far as pain, healing, etc, but I was nauseated 24/7 for the first three weeks. I’ve had a barrilium swallow test, and everything looks great - no leaks, twists, knots, or blockages. I realized at the end of week 3 that the protein shakes were the culprit. I have tried SEVERAL different protein supplements to no avail. Once I stopped the protein shakes, I had a couple days of no nausea, now I’m getting sick almost everyday. I have ordered vitamin patches that should be here Tuesday. I’m sure that will help some. I’m still working to get protein in anyway I can (Greek yogurt, still trying other powders/supplements, etc), but I’m having a lot of trouble trying to eat. I’ve talked to my surgeon multiple times. He says some people are just more sensitive to nausea. He said it could be days, weeks, or months, and I just have to wait it out. I am MISERABLE! I’m just so sick of being sick! I’m sorry to be Debbie Downer! I guess I just thought “talking” to someone who may understand may help. Everyone thinks they understand, and they want to tell me to try this and try that, they tell me they know how I feel because this one time when they were dieting blah blah blah, but they have NO clue! I’m not just dieting, I’m not just constipated (Yes, they’ve compared it to that too.🙄), and I’m not just feeling bad. I had 80% of my stomach removed, and I’ve been sick for 4 weeks!

    FREE Nutrition advice

Thanks for the offer of free advice! I'll take you up on it. I'm 5 days post-op so I'm in the liquid stage - Protein Shakes, broths, sugar-free popsicles and pudding, and lite yogurt, along with liquids like Crystal Lite and Water are my options right now. With that said, I'm STARVING. And I'm not talking about head hunger...those gnawing pains and growls from my tummy are hunger. I'm curious to know how long after you were banded did you get to the 1200 calorie minimum? My Protein shakes have 15g protein, but only 70 calories each, so I may need to look for different shakes. Also, I'm already at about 60 ounces of liquids per day plus a popsicle and a little container of sf pudding. Is this too much too fast? My instructions from the doc say to sip slowly and increase as tolerated. But the hospital nutritionist told me that it would likely take several weeks to get to the point where I could handle 64 ounces of liquid and 60 grams of protein. I don't want to do any damage, but I also don't want to become dehydrated because I'm not getting enough liquids. And I don't think I'm drinking too much because I've had no reflux, no pain, etc....no indications that I'm overdoing it. I'm just worried because I seems to be taking in more than the nutritionist thought I would. I've left her (and the nurse at my surgeon's office) a voice mail, but no response yet. Any advice would be appreciated. PS - If it matters, I logged my intake for the past two days and I'm having about 350 cals/55g protein.

    Some general nutrition questions

Well ... to me, this begs the bigger question of just what we are willing to do to be successful in our journey. So, let me start off by saying, I'm not judging anybody, we all have our own journeys and our reasons for following that path. OK, that being said, the foods that you talk about are the processed, out of the box variety where you don't have much control over the content. It has been these types of products which attributed to my obesity. Bottom line for me, is I prepare pretty much all of my foods from scratch. Just started making my own yogurt after I took a long look at the ingredients. HOLY COW! When did yogurt become junk food? I missed that one. I'll have the occasional Protein shake (Premier), which I approve of the ingredient list. I do have salad dressings which are higher in fat than I would like, but I gotta have my blue cheese. I didn't get the sleeve to restrict my menu, just my portions. When I prepare all of my food, I know what is going in and I can control the amounts. I know a lot of people are going to jump up and down saying, "It takes too long ... I don't know how to cook healthy meals ... It's only me eating and I don't want it to go to waste." Here is what I say to that ... I am a parent of two young kids who is a Scout leader and work well over 50 hours a week. I also have other side projects which take my time. All of the recipes I cook with are available on the internet with instructions. I cook huge portions and toss the leftovers into jelly jars which I take out on my way to work or pull out for dinner. You can have total control over what you put into your body. If you do this, then you don't really need to worry about eating the one-off packaged meal.

    Overweight Failure

I never experienced any problems with intake after the first week. I drink muscle milk once daily, then I consume Oikos yogurt, refried beans, pure protein bar, sometimes cream of wheat, sometimes sugar free fudgsicle, tuna, sweet potato....

Any VSG people in Hampton Roads?

Glad to see your doing better, time will go by and before you know it you will be eating regular foods. I was sleeved on 4/23 and just now able to eat a 1/4 of a sandwich and have lost 60 pounds. Some things that I really enjoyed eating at your stage (and still do) were yoplait smoothies, Greek yogurt, Panera soup (well blended), Herbox chicken brooth, and bariatric choice banana pudding (12 grams of protein per serving) which was about 6oz. I also experimented with a protein powder that you mixed with water (kind of like Kool aid mix) that was not too bad called Nectar. I would also check out some of the Unjury protein products. Some of my fellow sleeves have rave reviews about it but I didn't try it. Also, Myoplex by EAS has a protein shake that had 42 grams of protein for 17oz. And I found that at my local grocery store and at The Vitamin Shoppe. Hope you have a good recovery and good luck. And just an FYI I would not trust a fart at this stage trust me!!!

    Week 6: May 27-31st Sleevers

I've lost 40lb overall, including the two week preop diet. It seems like I'm a slow loser compared to the others, but I think it's because of my PCOS. I'm meticulous about weighing and tracking what I eat. I hope I don't have to do it forever, but for the time being, it's keeping me on track and accountable, and it's teaching me what's the right amount of what sorts of things to eat. @@tattoogirl233, if I were you, I'd be careful about just eating what you want, even if it's only a little bit. That might not be why you're losing slowly now (everyone's body is different), but it could be the thing that keeps you from being as successful as you could be long term. Do you have any idea how much protein you eat vs. carbs? Or even how many calories? What about your water? These are important things to know. Also, there's no reason you can't eat what you want, as long as what you want is healthy food. I've been pretty lucky, because even though I ate some junk food in the old days, I've also always loved good, healthy whole foods (I just used to eat waaay to much of even them). Yeah, there are some things I miss, but I'm certainly not feeling deprived now or forcing myself to eat things I don't like (with the exception of my morning protein shake perhaps). I realize already liking "healthy" food gives me an edge up in this, you'll feel so much better without all the processed stuff. To give you an idea of what my high protein (vegetarian) diet looks like, here's today: Breakfast: 1 slice of protein bread, mustard, 2 slices of Tofurky deli slice, half a slice of cheddar cheese, lettuce (I ate half) Lunch: second half of the above sandwich Dinner: I made a yummy curried chickpea yogurt dip and I'll have a couple tablespoons of that with some veggies Snacks: I have some Babybells and blueberries in the fridge. I'll probably have one Babybell and some point and maybe 1/3 cup blueberries. Also, dry roasted soybeans (they basically taste like peanuts and are like high protein crack!). I'll also intersperse two protein shakes throughout the day. This is what works for me. You need to find what works for you, but it should be something that will set you up for long term success. The extreme restriction won't work forever, so my bet would be that eating a little of whatever you want, isn't going to do that.

    February 2016 sleevers?

Me too! though I'm here until Sunday. The mentioned I shoild try drinking water today (I had my leak test) and that they'd try me on some thin yogurt drink thing tonight, but no drink. Given that I've been zipping water and it still kind of hurts I'm glad though. I'm home now! They started me on this 15g protein shake - it was fruity and actually good. Plus broth, jello and Popsicles. I had to focus on the shakes yesterday and got two in. Just drank one on the 1.5 drive from San Francisco to Sacramento. Taking a break and will just sip water. This afternoon ill try to drink a premier protein shake. It has 30g of protein in it so if I can't get anymore after that im OK. Hope they get you your yogurt drink soon. Does it hurt when water goes down or your whole stomach? yay I found this thread again!

    DISAPPOINTED & ANGRY

During my pureed stage I was allowed scrambled eggs, soft cheeses and shredded meat, so I really lived on those. I made Shelly's Ricotta Bake (recipe on this page) and had that almost every night for dinner. I had tuna salad or a a scrambled egg with some melted cheese for lunch. I was still having two Protein shakes a day (one for Breakfast and one a couple hours after dinner). I had cottage cheese, string cheese, light greek yogurt, or Peanut Butter for Snacks. My nutritionist wants me at 85-100 grams of protein a day and I was able to get at least 85 grams in all through my pureed stage with those foods. I never actually pureed anything.

Vets: What Are You Eating Today?

Had a really late night, so just fixed Breakfast for lunch: Chipotle eggs (egg scrambled with a half tablespoon of greek yogurt for body and extra Protein and half tablespoon of chipotle chilies in adobo sauce...yuuuuuum), and two small slices of uncured hickory smoked bacon (also yum).

    why no carbs phase two?

Plain greek yogurt does not have that many carbs. I'm thinking you got the sweetened kind. Get the plain and add sf syrup as pp suggested. It's also nice to use as a dip. Just mi seasonings in it, dry ranch dressing, dill, garlic and herbs, etc. and it makes a great dip for veggies or meat.
  17. I hear you!! I am less that two weeks post op and on liquids and my brain is going crazy! I hate drinking my food, always have. I was never one for milkshakes, yogurt, smoothies, soup, etc. to this has really been a challenge. I've gotten to the point that the idea of drinking another protein supplement makes me feel sick. I've basically been drinking fairlife for my protein. My goal isn't to say no to McD in the future. My goal is for it to be a "sometimes" thing cause I would prefer something that is natural and makes me feel good.

    Baby Food

The baby food fruit was fine - I liked the squeezy pouches. The meat was gross. DON'T BUY ANY BABY FOOD MEAT! Even if you doctor it up and season it, its gross gross gross. I ended up eating a lot of cheese and yogurt.
  19. It's crazy how different everyone's eating regimen is. Since I got home from the hospital I've been on a liquid diet which has consisted mostly of 1oz of something every 15 minutes but 2 of those have to be water or a water substitute and the other 2 can be something like: sf jello, sf pudding, soups (liquid or creamy no chunks), protein shakes, cream of wheat, malt-o-meal, yogurt, etc. Then when I see my doctor on my 2 week follow up he will let me know if I can start soft foods. Scrambled eggs here I come! ???? I can't complain though in 6 days I've lost 15 pounds. woohoo!! How are you doing on weight loss?
  20. Is it just watery or is a weird color ? Guys I keep going every hour doesn't matter if I've eaten something or not. My doctor told me to call tomorrow to make an appt for in a weeks time. I'm allowed puréed food already, but I barely find myself eating anything more than some yogurt or jello or a Popsicle or even laughing cow cheese. I feel so weak half of the day not sure what I'm doing wrong. Does anyone else have this issue ? I just made chicken with avacado puree and it's yummy, it's my first REAL meal. Also anyone having an issue with water ? I can't swallow it for nothing without it hurting.

What was your Christmas meal like?

Great topic I'm in charge of cooking so I got to plan everything out and make it VSG friendly Christmas Eve I made a noodlesless lasagna. Used eggplant for the layers and layered with sauce, ricotta, cheese and ground turkey. It was great and was a cross between eggplant parm and lasagna. I made shrimp scampi with it (didn't use real butter- margarine instead, lemon, a splash of wine. I only had a tiny bit of both. For dessert I made pumpkin yogurt panna cotta. Awesome, healthy and good amounts of Protein. And no sugar in it (made with stevia) Christmas Day we had Turkey, I made a small think of stuffing (I didn't really want it but my mother did) so I made it from scratch, used whole wheat bread and added ground turkey. I made a Rachael Ray version of 'stuffin muffins'. She basically put the stuffing in a cupcake pan. Perfect serving size! (I only had a tiny tiny taste of it, but still perfect servings for my guests- maybe they won't overeat if I portion it out for them too lol) also made roasted sweet potatoes and brussle sprouts with balsamic vinegar. I only ate a few sprout halves. And For dessert- skinny cheesecake with strawberries. Low carb, no crust and made in a cupcake pan so perfect portions. The food was well received also, healthy and great. Ill attach a few pics of my Christmas Eve dinner. I forgot to take pics of the Christmas Day stuff lol.

    why no carbs phase two?

Mine recommended the Carb smart yogurt from Kroger. Not sure if you have ine of those by you or not? It only has 4 carbs.
  24. I'm on liquids but my NUT said I could have yogurt to since I have had a hard time with liquids and protein. So how does everyone know when they are full say 7-21 days out? Possible even a month out? I'm 11 days post op and I have no idea when I'm full and I don't want to mess up my sleeve by eating/ drinking too much.

    Help please

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about "stages" -- instead I would revert to being sure you are maintaining sleeve-friendly eating habits. These are the rules for "getting back on track" as per my practice: 3 small meals per day. No snacks other than protein shakes. Your meals should consist of lean protein, green vegetables, and Greek yogurt. Aim for under 1000 calories per day. Minimum of 75 grams of protein and max 60 grams of carbs. Track everything on myfitnesspal or a similar logging site. Good luck!
