First off.......you have rocked the band and done a hell of job in utilizing it to get excellent results........and have lived with those results....through what life has thrown your way. I have huge respect for you in this. You haven't trumped up excuses to hide behind. You've ceased the opportunity and have truly kicked ass. It takes just a few minutes reading around here, at other wls sites or in the two support group meetings that I've attended to find many who simply didn't get their minds wrapped around it before having the wls. I'll likely never go back to another of those support group meetings. It was draining and filled with anything but motivation.....but a gathering of sympathy and validation of bad habits. I suspect those that are successful are busy getting on with their lives and moving into new stages of healthy living.....and posting less or not in attendance at the various support experiences. Maybe I'll reach that point one day....where I'm no longer thinking in terms of being "on a diet". I'll be just living and thriving and not thinking about the bariatric aspects so much. I sure would hate to have to fact my surgeon in a future meeting.......where I'm sitting across from him with a sob story about how I ate around my sleeve. He is very, very clear during all the pre op discussions. He doesn't do revisions in cases where it was patient failure. Very clear on this.

Considering lap band surgery...
Bandarella replied to ViciousVixen's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Glad to hear!! I had lap band because my insurance at the time covered it or RNY. I didn't need or want malabsorption, so my choice seemed easy at the time. Trouble started a little more than a year out and went downhill from there. I was under the care of my bariatric surgeon until the office neglected to notice I had 0% function of my esophagus. My gastroenterologist referred me to a leading esophageal specialist who had my band out in a week. It had been placed on my esophagus above the gastoesophageal junction...I was one of the 3%. I also have a cardiac arrythmia from vagus nerve damage and now take meds for that, in addition to all the meds I was taking pre band and I cannot revise. -
Hello I was wanting to talk to someone who had lapband surgery then had a revision to the gastric sleeve. Would you do it again? If so why?
-
Hello, I am not a band to sleeve revisionist, but HERE is a whole sub-forum dedicated to the topic. I'm confident you will find what you are looking for there. For what it is worth, I have lost 100% of my excess weight with the sleeve. http://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/394-band-to-gastric-sleeve-revisions/

Pain from Band to RNY revision
jerri mac replied to LoraLei2's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am 5 weeks out from surgery doing great! I had revision from a lap band to bypass. I am so glad to be free from the band after 9 years! I also have a high tolerance to pain so once I was home I did just fine. I needed no pain meds after week 2 and then I was just taking hydro codone at night. I have lost 30 lbs! Go for it! I was worth it! -
Your liver sits on top of your stomach, so the surgeon needs to prop it up out of the way to get to your stomach. The smaller it is the less likely your liver will get damaged in surgery and it also provides more room to access the stomach and work properly - and quickly. Surgery is safer overall because of all this when the liver is smaller. I've heard stories of people waking up from surgery without the actual bariatric procedure being done because the patient's liver was too large to safely go ahead. After my two surgeries (lap band and revision) the first thing I asked after waking up was how my liver was because I was so worried about it. Both times I was told that my liver was perfect. I will stick to my pre-op diet again this time for the same reason. I want to do everything within my power to ensure a safe, complication-free surgery.

Barrett's Esophagus
LilMissDiva Irene replied to Nancy E.'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The bypass rocks too... either one you still have to do all the same to make it a success. I encourage anyone that has pre existing conditions that could cause you another surgery down the line to just make the best decision for yourself. I wish I'd known at the time of my surgery that GERD is a bad combination with the sleeve, I would have just gotten the bypass first. Now I am fighting for a revision to the bypass as I am having bad complications. All the best to all of you! -
THANK YOU! I don't understand the theory that now you've had surgery, your new normal should be to lose 5-10lbs a day! Oh and we must be doing something wrong if we're not!!! And these are bariatric people talking like this! Not clueless family, friends and acquaintances!!!! To be honest, I'm in a very different place than most people. I never thought I'd be offered a revision. I expected to have to deal with my band the way it was and just do the best I could to NOT gain. I never thought I'd ever lose weight again. I was trying to be happy with were I was at. So, no, I don't get where people are coming from when they are upset with their weight losses. I try to be positive and let people know how wonderfully well they are doing and support some of that process. I don't know what is in another person's head or where they are in their own daily lives.

I went into my consult with about 20 pages of past weigh ins, graphs, and whatnot from my own personal apps and MyFitnessPal, etc. They didn't even want to see them... I just verbally went over the diets and exercise regimens I had previously tried, the gym memberships I've had, the 2 years of fills I had with my Lapband, and they said I was set and that's all the insurance really requires. I do, unfortunately, have to go through several pre-op tests other than the normal psych/NUT visit which I knocked out the same day (esophageal manometry, EGD, upper GI, chest x-ray, EKG, thyroid-specific blood tests... I think that's it, lol.) But I think that's surgeon specific and because I'm a revision. Keep me updated with your journies, ladies!

4 months post op progress pic: revision, band to RNY
gebbiabn posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Band January 2011. Revision to RNY 11/30/15. Down 46lbs since surgery. Size 24 to 16 pants. Size 3X to XL/1X shirts. Size 40-42DD bra to 38D. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
I just joined this group. I have just started the process for revision from a lapband.. The band slipped and I have only lost 60 lbs. since 5/09. I saw a new surgeon last week and wanted a bypass, but he thinks the sleeve will work for me. I am glad since it is less surgery. I have been getting alot of good info on these message boards. Seems like most people are having good luck with the sleeve so I am looking forward to getting it. I know it will be a while. It seems to take forever to go thru the process, but it will be worth it.

lap bander wants gastric bypass ins. pay?
Nanook replied to brandyII's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
x-ray chic, good luck with your surgery, I believe I am done with any thoughts of revision for myself but everyone has to make up their own mind. As I said so far my daughter has been successful at weight loss due to her RNY but it hasn't been an easy road without potholes. Right now I'm focusing on not dieting and being healthy and we'll see if I can get my band removed sometime in the future. Take care and good luck with your surgery, Nancy (brandyII & Nanook) -
I had the sleeve Jan 2013 then a revision to RNY on March 7th. My weight loss was always slow and I knew it wasn't working then after like a year or two I started to gain the weight back. Unfortunately I've personally had so many complications since the revision so I'm not sure how helpful of a source I am. I have lost about 50lbs in the last almost 4mons and feel like it should be more but my body is so confused.

Some data and information on gastric plication
TijuanaPlication replied to mednar's topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
BTW as you're a revision Donna, you may lose more slowly. Hip on VST is a band to sleeve revision and he was losing slowly. This post here gives some clarification as to why revisions lose more slowly http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/ds/4375541/Unproven-hypothesis-about-why-2-part-DSs-are-less-effective/ The summary of the post is that it's because you've already had some weight loss and your metabolism has compensated by slowing down. Donna, please don't feel I'm trying to rain on your parade, I just want you to have as much info as possible before you proceed. I wish you all the best with everything and keep us posted! -

Yes cupcake totally agree with u!! I'm going to do it for me, I deserve it!! I didn't have much success with my sleeve but I'm happy with what I lost already but hopefully with my revision I get to lose the rest of the weight and get to my goal weight!! -
My name is Jennifer I have a vertical gastric band none adjustable. I had the operation in 2001 in Sweden. I lost maybe 50 lbs got pregnant gained all plus some. I then was diagnosed with a condition called lipodema, it is a lymph condition that affects from the waist down to ankles. I am now back to my pre banding weight and waiting for a revision to a bypass. I'm from Seattle and live in Sweden since 1999. Sorry this post is all over the place. I'm just wondering if anyone else is in Sweden.

Pain after sleeve surgery?
marfar7 replied to Skywalker's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was a band to sleeve revision and the pain was much worse than my band plcmt in 2009. My dr took an extra 30 mins to dig my band out of my stomach so I was in a lot of pain. The IV Dialudid while in the hospital for 2 days was my saving grace. And the bottle of liquid Vicodin was my buddy for about 12 days. That stuff is good! For about 2 weeks, I felt like I was hit by a truck. I regretted my decision. My husband then reminded me that the band had to come out anyway, why not just add 1 more thing? It probly woulda been close to as much pain with just removal. After 2 weeks I started feeling more human. And when I started eating real food (4 weeks of liquids), I felt much better. Got my hunger back on day 10 and I woulda eaten my arm had I been able to suck it thru a straw! Good luck! I envy those who used tylenol and had no pain. The gas was difficult for the first few day. My shoulder ached the most from it (gas rise up to the shoulder). -
YES! Lol definitely, I think everyone feels like this. Our stats are somewhat similar although I don't know how tall you are. I'm 5'2 and am at about 270 now which is the highest I've ever been..yikes! I am a revision from a sleeve to a bypass so have a little bit of prior knowledge pre-op on what to expect. I had major complications with the sleeve in 2012 and haven't been able to tolerate solid food since the surgery so have been on liquids/super mushy wet food for almost 2 years. So, I'm REALLY extra excited because I'm hoping my pain will stop after this surgery! I'm on August 1st so we are right next to each other and should try to keep up post-op to compare experience. I know we will both make it through these next two weeks but it'll be tough to concentrate on anything until the surgery, I'm especially having trouble sleeping because I'm so anxious/nervous mine is mostly due to the fear of this not working and making my current condition worse. I take Lortab which is the liquid Vicodin they give you post-op every day just to be able to swallow enough liquids to stay out of the hospital even though I'm vitamin and protein deficient and I can't stay hydrated enough to keep from getting kidney infections so I'm crossing my fingers that I'll have some relief after this surgery. Knock on wood, but I think I'm due for some good luck!

Many of you probably don't 'know' me from these forums, but I have been around for several years. i'm almost 4 years post VSG. I have struggled through many chapters in my life since my surgery and have regained a good amount of weight. since I carry ALL my weight right around my middle, I look horrible and my self esteem has tanked. Since my surgery I changed jobs and moved, lost a parent, had to change doctors, and gained a master's degree. I'm currently in the final few classes to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. on top of all that, I had managed to lose enough weight initially to be off all my medications-GERD and BP. Now i'm back on both. My GERD has worsened with the weight gain and i'm at the point where I can't lay on my left side if I've eaten within the past few hours because the food and acid will backwash into my throat. i'm miserable. I have been to the psych doc, the NUT, to the surgeon, and to my GP. none of them can give me an exact direction of what to do. my GP says they simply don't know enough about bariatrics to guide me. The bariatric team trialed me on Contrave, I got so sick I had to stop. I tried Keto and spent two days in misery from all that fat. My brain is the issue and I don't know how to get it back under control. I am taking straight Welbutrin for the time being to see if that will help with behavior AND with appetite. my surgeon is very concerned that from the GERD, i'll need a revision. I don't really WANT a revision, I know that the GERD has worsened because I carry ALL my weight in my waistline and it's pushing up on my sleeve- badly. I have an EGD this week with my GI doc which will look at the GERD and also the condition of my sleeve. I have no excuse, the regain is completely my own doing. One day about 20 months ago, I thought that drinking a diet ginger ale at work would be ok, and it has spiraled out of control from there. I am trying badly to get off of soda again, which I think is really the first step. As I walk this very difficult road to get back on the path where I belong, I ask for your prayers, positive thoughts, and vibes.

If I may ask - what repair to your esophagus did you have? I was diagnosed with achalasia and am revising my sleeve to a bypass as well as having a myotomy. Just curious what it was that you were treating. As far as recovery for my sleeve, I work a desk job and took 2 weeks. I was fine, physically, at about a week, but was still very tired all the time due to nutritional intake (or lack thereof) and being tired as my body healed.

Back to the WLS for the next installment of Jill's endless problems with the band. My appointment was scheduled for 1:00pm and it's about an hour drive. As usual, but for coffee, there isn't any thing I'm going to get down before 10:00am at the earliest. So I planned to just skip eating as it takes me 40+ minutes to work down a Yoplait and some oatmeal. Around 11:00am my husband asked me if I'd make him a sandwich. While making said sandwich I ate one single slice of deli ham and was immediately blocked. Didn't feel like I was going to throw up, it was just 'there'...until I got in the car. About half way to the doctor's office I started sliming and feeling like maybe I should pull over but I made it, checked in, went to the restroom and got sick. All it produced was a tiny piece of ham. Still felt blocked an hour later leaving the doctor's office and ended up throwing up over and over in my car on I-87. Thank God I have a plastic waste basket in my car. Now that's ironic considering I'd made it for a whole week without an episode and once again convinced myself it must just be in my head! What did the WLS have to say? It's gotta come out. While it's comforting to know the band failed me and not the other way around, having my WLS announce that I need to start planning my revision surgery pronto because he "knows" most patients who have their band removed, "blow up" just adds to the anxiety. So much for the band allowing me to finally stop focusing on food, my weight etc. Let's stir in the fact that I've got to try to find the time before the end of the year it get this done for fear that with the onslaught of Obama-Care I won't have coverage. It funny how I didn't really notice what poor nutrition does as prior to the attempted repair surgery the problems had slowly built up. I'm a pretty busy person and had just chalked up being tired to my schedule, menopause etc. In the month where I was able to eat more normally and a wider range of foods, I had more energy, got more done and didn't need to nap everyday just to get up the energy to finish chores. Not to sound vain, but I had people telling me how well I looked - which I found to be odd - just how bad was I looking!?! My hair was glossy again and my nails grew. Since the return of the problems my hairbrush looks like a small kitten and my nails are breaking and splitting and once again I'm hearing, "You look tired". And so I am - nap time for Jill!
