Advice from the experts please? :-)
Brianna_Nicole replied to Brianna_Nicole's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Yes the dietitian was especially focused on protein when we talked! Did you find it hard to get in all the protein you needed at first? I'm really curious how your diet and typical day is now, 10 years later? I've heard that about the 2 step DS being safer as well. I've also seen a lot of posts and discussions in the forums about doctors recommending the 2 step simply to make more money. I have no idea which is more accurate! I want the one step because I know getting insurance to cover another surgery will be a nightmare... If I do go with the sleeve I'm going to make sure I document EVERYTHING so that if it fails and I need a revision, I have plenty of evidence that I followed the rules. I could come to NYC. Do you have a recommendation? I don't mind travel if it means the best care. Thanks so much!! :-) -
1 year, 1 month after surgery and pregnant! Advice!?
whitneytij replied to smellslikecoffee's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
I found out I was pregnant in Nov. 2013, after being banded Feb. 2013, so I was only 8 months post-op. I notified my surgeon immediately, and they told me I should be fine unless I was having a lot of morning sickness, then I would possibly need a partial unfill. During my first OB appointment, when I told her I was banded, she immediately recommended that I get 1/2 fluid removed, which I did (it was about 3ccs removed). I had lost 85 lbs in the 8 months before I became pregnant, and now I'm 14 weeks along and have gained 15 lbs even though I am sick ALL THE TIME. I am not upset in the least about gaining weight. I feel as though I look funny, because I still have a lot of loose, flabby skin on my stomach, and I am bummed that it will probably hide my baby bump. But I know my baby's in there, somersaulting around like the best of them! I am hoping to have a natural birth, but I read a lot of pregnant women who have had WLS end up having c-sections, but I hope that's mostly people who have had the more invasive surgeries like gastric bypass. I wish you the best with your pregnancy! -
Had my bypass and I have struggled since day 1 first pain now 3 weeks of nausea and tonight I coughed/threw up blood. Idk if the blood is just from my stomach and esophagus irritated from all the dry heaving and throwing up or what what do u all think? Anyone experience coughing/throwing up bright red blood?

New Member, Revised!
California Guy replied to California Guy's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Yeah, the original plan was one surgery, three procedures in one day. They fixed a hernia and removed gall bladder. They had to stop there and program two corrective procedures before I could get the gastric bypass. Both surgeons took great care of me. I was glad I was able to complete the DS, especially during the same hospital stay. -
Are you really getting in all of your Water and Protein at one week post op? For me that was absolutely impossible because of the swelling inside. I ask because dehydration can feel exactly like hunger. You should not have a lot of stomach acid because you had bypass and the hunger hormone itself should not yet be present. So it realistically could be dehydration or head hunger and as James said that need to chew something. I remember that feeling as well and it really can mimic hunger.

Hey guys, I'm wondering how long after my bypass I should wait before I can start to do some mild upper body work with dumbbells? I've had a personal trainer for years up until about 9 months ago (when I had an illness AND moved country) so my technique is pretty good. I just want to do bicep curls, some tricep work, shoulder presses, some vertical rows - even with light weights. Any experience or tips from you gents? Cheers, J

What questions should I ask my doctor during my consult?
JWL08 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am considering a revision from the band to bypass. I know little about the process, and bypass in general. I don't know if my insurance will cover it, and right now I am in that awful catch 22 of weighing too little for surgery but too much to have a healthy lifestyle, so there are a lot of ifs there. Assuming all the planets align though, what questions did you have for your doctor? My family is pretty much convinced bypass means I am going to die, so I'd like to calm their fears. Thanks! -

Has anyone heard of Malabsorption Gastric Bypass
RickM replied to Sharon B A's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Did he just not do any stomach reduction at all, or did he make a pouch type structure like a traditional RNY gastric bypass? If he made a pouch, even a larger one, and connected it well downstream to provide DS-like malabsorption, that would be what is known as a distal RNY, which is rarely done, but is a cousin to the traditional RNY which is primarily a restrictive procedure with a minimal amount of malabsorption added. Another possibility is that he did a DS type of intestinal routing but with a large stomach pouch similar to an RNY, and this would be a Scopinaro procedure, which was a precursor to the standard or traditional BPD DS and was rarely done in the US. Another possibility from your description is something like the old jejunolileal bypass which was a purely malabsorptive procedure done in the 60's and 70's that kept the stomach intact along with the duodenum and some portion of the small intestine but bypassed the majority of it, reconnecting things down near the colon. It was abandoned owing to a lot of complications though he may have done some less malabsorbing variation. It was mostly replaced with the now traditional RNY gastric bypass. I'm sorry that you didn't get what you were expecting, but you should be able to make this work. It is important, however, that you get a clear understanding of what exactly he did (get a copy of the surgical report for your records) so that you, and any doctor who may need to work on you in the future for whatever reason, has a good understanding of how your insides now work. -

HATED the band, LOVE the sleeve!
WASaBubbleButt replied to WASaBubbleButt's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
VegasAngel answered most of your questions. He does have an office, I saw it when I was originally banded. It's less than a block from the hospital. I remember I was outside walking after my band surgery and Dr. Aceves happened to be walking to his office to get something and asked if I wanted to go for a quick walk with him. That's the only time I have ever been in his office. He does everything out of the hospital. He did all my band fills/unfills and check ups in the hospital. I don't really have a need to go back anymore since I'm sleeved. Yours will be a revision and your recovery might be a bit longer than someone just getting a sleeve. I really had no problem going back to work but the one thing that was really annoying was where my port was. That felt like a bon fire was going on in there periodically. I seem to be the only one that had that issue, Susan, Daisy, and Elisabeth didn't seem to complain as much as I did. ;o) -
Sleeve vs. Gastric Bypass
Muslim_amy replied to LovinLife's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
LillianneMcBeth I had the same issues but also had hiatal hernia and an ulcer..my doc had me clear up the refux better by taking medication.thn I had to retest..the second time was better and she thn felt comfortable to do it. She did worn me that my reflux could get worse with this surgery because of the way stomach is cut.but I chose sleeve still because I had the ulcer and if it became bleeding ulcer will be difficult to get to if I had bypass..but she also stated if my reflux got bad as it was she would have to change my sleeve to a bypass to cure the reflux -

And no more fills.....being poked....too much fill....too little fill....what a relief! How are all the revisions doing with weight loss now that you can eat things you couldn't with the band? I am at a total standstill....I lost 15 imediately after the revision, but have gained it back and not losing anymore. Is anyone else experiencing this? Nancy -
I knew you guys would see my point! I like that idea Rev - seems like the "plastic surgery" idea is a good one. Next time that might be my response. I would love to have been a natural beauty - no hair dye, no makeup, hair blowing in the breeze and a perfect body - but that never happened and ain't gonna happen now. I always tried to make up for my weight problem with being a nice person all the time - a people pleaser - there was extremes I wouldn't go to do for my friends and family - but the beauty of aging takes away our need for everyone to love us, as we accept ourselves - others approval seems less important. In making my decision for this revision surgery - it came from a deeper place than my when I had my lapband. I had the surgery in 2003 - I still thought I had a shot at being that wild natural beauty if I was skinny. I had a new husband - would he still love me? I had a one year old? Is that too much for a 41 year old to handle being so fat? In 2005 I my eldest daughter passed away at 23. That was the beginning of growing up for me - and not relying on the outside world to have an opinion of me - everyones view of me always burnt my sensitive self. Sometimes the worst and painful situations - open a new strand in your soul - it makes you tougher and nothing scares me - I don't ponder a minute thinking about "what if" - I now live for this minute while I am here typing - and I feel THAT is the meaning of life. Wow, deep - go Glenda! Anyhow, thanks for all your insightful and intelligent responses. It is nice to share with like minds. Glenda

I hear ya! I didn't tell anyone about my lap band and I have not told anyone about my sleeve revision. I feel I would be even more misunderstood for the revision because I was barely obese when I went for the revision. Not a lot of people would understand that I needed this surgery to keep me from gaining a ton of weight after I took out the band. To an outsider it might seem drastic, but we each do what we need to do in our lives, right? I know lots of people who have had plastic surgery - nose jobs, face lifts, boob jobs, liposuction, etc. At the most shallow level, I consider this my plastic surgery. It has changed how I look, my health, and how I feel about myself. And, guess what? There is nothing wrong with it. I keep it to myself because I don't need anyone's opinion. I am quite happy with the experience and the results - screw everyone else!

They had to take my band out...I am absolutely devestated
WASaBubbleButt replied to Startingover!'s topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Please know, you are not alone in revision surgery! My suggestion... after your stomach has healed go to a surgeon that does ALL major procedure types, band, sleeve, and bypass. If restriction is all you need and you don't need malabsorption, get a sleeve! They ROCK! I love mine, it is so much easier than banding. No slips, erosion, stomas, getting stuck, none of it. Just a tiny little stomach. Weight loss is faster, better, easier, and far fewer long term complications. They also remove Ghrelin, a hunger causing hormone produced mostly by the stomach. So hunger is not the same as before surgery. Here is a link to find out more: Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery (VSG) AKA Gastric Sleeve (NEW!) - Lap Band Surgery and Lap Band Discussion Forum If you go to someone who only does bands and bypass they aren't going to push the sleeve. It would be like a toyota dealer talking you into a ford. It isn't going to happen. That's why I suggest going to someone who does all the major procedures, you get a more balanced opinion. But no worries! There are options and they might just be better than the band! -
They had to take my band out...I am absolutely devestated
Startingover! replied to Startingover!'s topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
About 3 weeks ago I got my 5th fill and that's when I began vomiting 4x a day, couldn't keep any solids down, barely any liquids. When I would lay down at night to go to sleep I would wake up to Fluid coming out of my nose/mouth. Went back to the doctor they removed what they had just added to my band. It didn't work, so they removed all fluid from my band. By this point my chest was hurting pretty bad, but I attributed it to throwing up so much. Well the symptoms still didn't go away so they admitted me to the hospital and long story short I had what was a planned revision surgery which ended up with the removal of my band. But in retrospect I had been having a lot of shortness of breath, chest pains etc. A couple of months ago I was actually rushed to the hospital because of the shortness of breath etc. Now looking back I'm pretty confident those symptoms were due to the hernia. I actually posted on here asking if anyone experienced those symptoms with the feeling that their heart was beating out of their chest also. Have you mentioned your symptoms to your doctor? If not you really should. One thing this experience has taught me is that call your doctor if something doesn't feel right to you! Your instincts are usually correct!! Hope this info helped you some, sorry it got kind of lengthy! Amy -

Lap Band Eroded - Possible Revision To Gastric Sleeve
JaxBandster replied to JaxBandster's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Spoke with the M.A. at my surgeon's office this afternoon. Asked the following questions and received the following answers. If anyone can suggest other questions I should ask when I meet my surgeon, I would appreciate it very much. 1. From your experience, are removals and revisions generally covered by employer insurance even if the original surgery was either self-pay or covered by another insurer? A. Removals are usually covered as they are considered a complication and medically necessary. Revisions depend on the coverage. 2. If they do cover the revision, do they typically require the mandatory six month weight loss program requirement? A. Insurance requirements are rapidly changing - hard to say at this time. 3. Pending the results of the endoscopy, would it be harmful to wait until my new benefits take effect at the beginning of the year before removing the band? A. Depends on the results of the endoscopy 4. Could the removal and revision be done at the same time? A. No. You need time to heal from the removal 5. How many removals and revisions has my surgeon done? A. Quite a few (no numbers provided, will ask surgeon directly) 6. Generally, how long is the recovery for the removal and for the revision to the sleeve? A. Removal of the band, about the same length of time when having the original surgery. Revision depends on the patient. 7. Is the removal procedure inpatient or outpatient? A. Usually outpatient 8. Typically, how long is the hospital stay for the revision. A. Overnight 9. Is there a stomach tube with the revision? How long does it stay in? A. Sometimes. Depends on the patient. She informed me that she will contact my PCP in the morning to make sure they have all the information they require in order to make the referral for my endoscopy. They want that done ASAP. She also suggested that I speak with a rep from BCBS during open enrollment to discuss my specific situation and what actions I need to take to assist in getting approved for the revision. I know that everyone's situation is unique and everything I asked here may not apply to your situation, but I hope that my experience can help others in similar situations. -
When Your Bandwagon Stalls
Jean McMillan replied to Jean McMillan's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
My band slipped in June 2009, when I was about 21 mos post-op. The blog post whose link I posted on this thread has nothing to do with that. The damage from decades of reflux was diagnosed in January/February 2012, when I was 4-1/2 yrs post-op. My surgeon and gastro doc agreed that my band was aggravating the situation. My band was removed in April 2012 and I revised to VSG in August 2012. The blog post whose link I posted on this thread describes my 2012 experience. The OH post you quoted sounds familiar but I don't remember when I posted it. Probably in the spring of 2012, at which I point I may not have had all the test results and gastro consults done and was therefore not in possession of all the facts. I'm flattered because you must have done quite a bit of digging to find it. Or you've been saving it all this time, waiting for the opportunity to quiz me about it. Anyway, I'm sorry if I confused you. Yes, my band slipped, and yes, I had damage from 20+ years of reflux, and yes, I had general band problems related to reflux. -
Congrats on getting started!! I have Aetna, so they require a 3 month nutrition and diet program. I had a little bit of probs cause, long story, my husband had a heart attack and triple bypass at age 37 back in feb/March. I had a net gain during those 3 months. Aetna states U cannot have a net gain. And I had no weight for 2013. So I was denied. (July) Then i appealed - denied again. (Aug) I hired Lindstrom obesity advocacy (They were EXCELLENT!!) And was approved Oct 3rd!!! I started my first meeting was January 7th 2013. And my surgery is set for 2 days before!!! I'm so happy and even tho it took a while, it was worth it. The denial definitely hit me hard and the next denial was even worse. But it lit a fire in me that I wanted this and I had to get real serious whether or not this was for me. And it is!!! The denials made me get my head together and with lots of family and friends support I have fought thru and here I am!!!! So the whole process took me a year, a friend of mine, who I went thru the whole process with, was sleeved on aug 11th. So I am only a little behind. Now is my time!! Any questions let me know and good luck!! Keep in touch!

Possible revision to sleeve from band
alli.wakefield posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello, everyone. I am a long time stalker, first time poster of this forum. I got the lap band in 2012 at 302 pounds (my heaviest ever, at the time.) After getting banded, I lost 35 pounds but I had to fight for every ounce to come off. I never felt like I was in the ‘green zone’ that the clinic continually talked about. I went in religiously for fills but never felt like I could eat small portions only three times a day and be satisfied. I even questioned my sanity and if head hunger really had that much control over me. After a year and only 35 pounds lost, when I needed to lose at least 150 pounds, the NP told me that I could not get any more fills. I was experiencing some stuck episodes but the NP said that my band was already at 8cc’s in my 10cc band and it wouldn’t hold any more fluid. So I left bawling. Here I was – a year out from surgery, having paid out of pocket for this device that didn’t do bunk to help with the hunger like it claimed to. So, I quit. I stopped eating healthy, I stopped trying, I stopped caring. I did that for a year and kinda maintained my 35lb loss but that was it. I eventually went to my primary care doctor who wanted me to start Metformin ER, but they are massive horse pills and because I needed the extended release, I couldn’t crush them. So I went back to my clinic and had all the fluid removed to take the Metformin. Well, long story short, I’m now sitting at 325 pounds. So I’ve gained back the 35 I lost in 2012 and have since packed on an additional 25 pounds. Last month, I had family in town and many people taking pictures - full length, unflattering angles, kinds of pictures - and posting them online. I had a coming to Jesus moment when I literally didn’t recognize myself. I’ve never seen myself as big as I am. Last year, I had two friends get the vertical sleeve and both get phenomenal results. I’m finally ready to take care of myself and finish what I thought I started in 2012. I’ve contacted the clinic that both of my friends went through and have a consult set up for next Monday. Does anyone have any advice or a similar story? I am almost frozen in fear when I start thinking that because the band failed for me, the sleeve will too. I cannot pay out of pocket for a second bariatric surgery and not get results. I don’t think I can mentally survive that.
