Diet After First Fill
hokiemama replied to bandedbob's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hope your fill went well. I also hope that you asked your doctor these questions and were given good information to use. As was said, all doctors have different guidelines. My surgeon requires a liquid diet for 2 days and then soft/mushy diet for 2 days after a fill. He actually does all adjustments in the hospital so he can see exactly how the band is working. For me, I stood up to an x-ray looking machine and drank a few gulps of barium liquid. He showed me my band and the liquid flowing through. It was neat. He then put some saline in the band and had me drink another gulp. He added a little more and had me do the gulp. When the liquid flowed the way he wanted it to, he said it was enough. It did not hurt at all. I was very nervous but it was a very quick procedure. 5-10 mins. I then had to sit in the lobby and drink 4 oz. of water before leaving to make sure it wasn't too tight. No changes with pills or other things after the fill. My surgeon is very firm about NOT drinking 15 mins before or 60 mins. after meals. He said this defeats the purpose of the band and you will fill hungry too quickly. Good luck! -
One member asked the question: Is sleeve surgery “taking the easy way out”? This question really got my juices flowing and thinking. For all of us who endured the agony and anguish of bariatric surgery, we recognize there is nothing easy about this most important matter. Let see, how easy this is? 25 intelligent reasons for making our choice. 1. Exercising and working out with little or no results (life long) 2. Yo-yo dieting with little or no results (life long) 3. Heart disease 4. Respiratory problems 5. Stroke 6. High blood pressure 7. Elevated cholesterol 8. Diabetes 9. sleep disorders 10. Gout 11. Discrimination (on the job, in public, airline seats, etc) 12. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) 13. Amenorrhea - absence of menstrual bleeding (gals) 14. Impotence (guys) 15. Cancer 16. Psychological problems 17. Kidney disease 18. Liver disorders 19. Economic factors (cost of associated illnesses, food, clothes etc) 20. Insurance issues 21. Osteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint) 22. Social problems – (family, friends, dating etc) 23 Gallbladder disease 24. Pregnancy complications 25. DEATH The dictionary defines “easy” as: 1. Not hard or difficult; requiring no great labor or effort: 2. Free from pain, discomfort, worry, or care: Our lives have been anything but easy. As always, comments welcome. Lash

Hey Guys! - saying hello from MA
*susan* replied to Quinn's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Quinn, and welcome to LBT! Glad you found us. I have to tell you, I honestly can say I do not think you will ever regret the decision to get the band. Every day I have it, I am so thankful for it. The recovery process is actually different for everyone. Have you had major surgery before? If so, you can kind of gage your recovery based on how you recovered from previous surgeries. Especially because everyone tends to react differently to anesthia. However, the first few days are the worst. I would say they more uncomfortable than anything. Plan on having gas X around for the gas pain. I also recommend a heating pad. It feels great both on your tummy and your port area. The first few nights I slept in the recliner because it was more comfortable than lieing down flat on the bed. After about day four, I started feeling definite improvement every day and felt completely back to myself after about 10 days. If you have any more questions, give us a holler. Oh, and don't forget to check out the stickies at the top of most of the forums. They are filled with tons of really useful information. -
Just Got Home From Hosp, have A Question
Mvpo8961 replied to deana923's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My post op diet instructions went like this first week - thin liquids second week - thick liquids third week - soft foods fourth week - regular foods advance as tolerated by days 8 - 10 I was eating soft foods. I was told absolutely no Peanut Butter. However other folks eat peanut butter just fine. I personally don't like it so I don't eat it. Didn't your surgeon give you any guidelines? My doc had a specific day by day what I could eat packet that I had to read before surgery. Matter of fact he read it to me at my preop appointment. -
How did you make your final decision??
purplekat replied to mimirae's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Do NOT have surgery until your are ready!!! It is a big decision that you must be comfortable with and there is always a risk of complications with any surgery. That being said I had my Lapband surgery on MAR16, 2009 and I have lost 74# since starting the presurgery diet. It was the best decision I have ever made. I had done WW and also lost over 50# on a physician supervised diet but could not keep the weight off. I have high blood pressure and also arthritis in one knee. I needed to lose the weight to become more healthy. I feel 10 years younger and have so much more energy. It is a tool and you still have to work at it but you can achieve success with the lapband. -
I so not have 2 puppies (around 8-10 lbs each) and I avoided picking them up for at least the first week after surgery. I'm nearly 2 wks post-op now and still try to be careful. Internal sutures need to develop scar tissue to "anchor" the band and port. Picking up heaving objects of any kind too soon can damage or weaken those support anchors. Later down the road these weakened areas could lead to slippage, port flips etc. (now this does not mean that only heavy lifting is the cause of these types of complications... just known and avoidable risk factors)... this is how it was described to me! -- utilize any and all your support systems at least the first couple of weeks because it is not worth risking damage/trauma of any kind to your new lap-band --

A Litttle Help Needed, Always Hungry After Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Forensikchic replied to firefighter2621's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just as a side note... pork skins are not that bad.. they do have a lot of protein per serving and no carbs.. 80 cal, 4.5 fat, and 8 protein, NO CARBS for only a 1/2 an oz. I dont think they are a bad choice for an occasional snack. In a large bag there are 10 servings so you can see that 1/2 oz is a small portion and we need the protein. If you are going to snack, this would be a fairly good one to choose. Just sayin. -
2/20/07 -The surgery and three weeks of liquids are behind me. I'm eating mushies and some soft foods. Lunch today-Turkey left over from my WW turkey dinner last night. About two ozs. and I was full Dinner-WW sweet and sour chicken. I always eat the meat first and then if I'm not stuffed I will eat the veggies. My stomach is doing much better. I'm trying to get the water in, it's harder than I thought. I can only eat about 4 ozs. at a time. I've lost 19 lbs. I'll do my measurements and record them tomorrow.

I have gone from self-pay, tried to switch to insurance then back to self-pay. For me the attempted switch to insurance was a royal pain. BCBS, or at least my specific carrier provided coverage, but the requirements were to rigid. For example, I had already done 5 months with my current primary care physician in early 2019 for the “doctor supervised” diet. I exceeded all other requirements and already completed the psychiatric evaluation. I got cold feet at the last minute and decided to attend a weight loss boot camp for 10 weeks as an attempt to avoid weight loss surgery. That was a BIG mistake, my doctor warned me I would gain the weight right back and that is exactly what happened by the end of 2019. I decided to I move forward with surgery in 2020, was going to do self-pay at first since the weight loss boot camp was also self-payed. After going through my medical records for the last 3 years I felt I had enough documentation to use my employer provided health insurance so I immediately contacted BCBS for approval. According to BCBS since I did not see my doctor during the time I was attending the weight loss boot camp (which was in another state), I would be required to restart the doctor supervised diet requirement which I was told back in Feb/2019 was three months but now, for whatever reason in 2/2020 it was increased to 6 months? 🤪 If I want BCBS to pick up the tab I must start over, that would be 7 months with the doctor since the first visit does not count, another 30 to 60 days for the approval process and 30 days with the surgeons office or more to get all pre-requisite tests completed and the surgery scheduled. VERY FRUSTRATING! I have appealed but was told it may be 30 to 60 days until I get a decision. When I ask my doctor for advise he simply looked at me and said “I wouldn’t wait…” so I am not, back to self-pay.

Went to costco today and they had Kenneth Cole dress pants on sale for $20, and Gloria Vanderbilt jeans for $12.99! I bought a size 14 and size 12 in the jeans, and one pair of black pants - I decided to buy size 12 since I have a couple pairs of 16s I can still wear with a belt . . . I figured I'd have to keep the black pants for a while before they would fit. For fun, I tried them on - and they FIT!!! They are just a wee bit snug, but not too bad . . . I'm so excited! The jeans are cut a little different as the 14s fit perfectly right now, but I'm hoping to be into the 12s soon. Now I'm almost thinking I should go back and pick up a pair of the dress pants in a 10 . . . OMG. I can't believe I might be in a size 10 soon!!! I don't think I've worn a size 10 since junior high!!!!! Happy dance!!!

I Finally Have A Surgery Date For Gastric Bypass
channing28105 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I finally got a Surgery Date for my Gastric bypass I am getting my Gastric bypass on Tuesday July 24, 2012. I start on a Full liquid Diet on July 10, 2012 where I have whey Protein drinks at Breakfast, lunch and dinner. I can have some Soups like tomato , Cream of mushroom Soup and I can have some pudding and if I want something soldi I can have Carrots, tomatoes and Celery. I have my Pre-Op appointment on June 25, 2012. I would like prayers and I would like to have a Diet Buddy and I will want to know what to do 1. What Should I do If I am having Vomiting that lasts for several hours 2. What Should I Do If I am having Diarrhea for several hours I know that you can experience these things after having Gastric Bypass. I have some more questions: 1. If you have vomiting that lasts for several hours do you have to get to the hospital even if it means calling 911? 2. If you have diarrhea for several hours do you have to get to the hospital even if it means calling 911? Right now I Vomit with my Heartburn or GERD. Has anyone ever had Heartburn or GERD where they Vomited with their Heartburn or GERD? Did you do things like Belch with your Heartburn or GERD? I am looking for email pen pals that have gone through Gastric Bypass that can be my diet buddy that I can share my weight with. I am wanting to try to lose some weight on my own before the pre0op. I like pen pals that can answer short letters with questions like: 1. Do you have any pets? 2. Do you like music? 3. What type of music do you like? I would appreciate it if my questions about What to do about Vomiting and Diarrhea that lasts for several hours after Gastric Bypass is answered and my questions about Heartburn or GERD and pen pals is answered. If you know the answers to my questions please let me know I would appreciate it. Channing -
Love & Hate relationship

My NP wanted off the protein shakes at 3 months and get my protein from food. I still drank one a day because I had a stricture and could barely eat anything but mushy until my 4th or 5th month. Drink as much as you can. If you can get 40oz in, you are doing great. I am 19 months out. A few bites and I am done, too. Welcome to your new normal. Your hair will grow back. Promise. Metamucil in your coffee or water will help with the constipation. You can't taste it and it works wonders. Find something else that makes you feel good. Relying on food to make you feel good is what probably got you here in the first place. That's a slippery slope you are treading so early out. Chocolate isn't giving you physical energy, either. It will give you a sugar rush and then you will crash. Bad bad bad cycle. Heartburn may never go away. I never had it before but I do know. I take my PPI and tums regularly. You don't want to hear this but chocolate gives you heartburn: http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20443643_2,00.html ChocolateBad news for chocolate lovers: Chocolate seems to cause more reflux than any other food. It’s a triple whammy: 1. Chocolate contains caffeine and other stimulants such as theobromine, which cause reflux. 2. Chocolate is high in fat, and fat causes reflux. 3. Chocolate is also high in cocoa, and cocoa causes reflux. Theoretically, dark chocolate isn’t as bad as high-fat milk chocolate, but let’s face it—all chocolate is bad for reflux. -
Do you weigh yourself everyday? Bad/good?
Dream4tc replied to wagyu's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@@wagyu I have a bad habit of weighing daily. My husband has accused me in the past of being obsessed with the scale. Lol. I want to let you know that weight can fluctuate up to 10 pounds in one day based on water retention, sodium rich foods, and stool which we all have very long intestines. Once a week is probably optimal, but I don't do that. I weigh daily because it keeps me on track better. The most accurate time of day for me is in the morning , a few hours after I get up and after a BM. I find my weight is more accurate. The rest of the day, I don't really pay attention because I know so many things affect weight retention. -

Weightloss goals and rewarding your accomplishments?
bikrchk replied to Saffiredreamer's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ziplining was one thing... I hit goal 2 months ago and I'm scheduled on Saturday for the zip tour! Skydiving may be the next! I decided to shed an extra 10, so once that's off I'll be scheduling that jump! I didn't really go mini-goals, just looking and feeling great and the new wardrobe was reward enough! -
I was banded on yesterday.. Honestly I haven't had a whole lot of discomfort as of yet.. I was instructed to walk every hour for 10 minutes.. My husband set alarms. He has been my doctor at home.. I used the heating pad on my shoulder , a lil pain there.. I'm not sure if the fact that I am taking the pain pill every four hours on time is why I'm not really feeling the gas pain that others talk about.. It's like I'm waiting for it. I ended up having a hernia repair also... So far so good so good looking forward to the next phases.

You can do it, but remember you want to be at a stable weight before having skin surgery. If that means you need to wait another month or 2, so be it. You dont want to lose 10 pounds before surgery to just put it back on and start stretching out the new skin. -

It is scary traveling to another country...especially for surgery! I Had my surgery with Dr. Ortiz at the obesity control center on April 17th! It is a smaller hospital/clinic setting...and at night it was really quiet...but I slept most of the night. There was a nurse there but I really didn't need her. My sister was with me until after the operation, then she had some facial plasma injections done there by the plastic surgeon. I saw her the next morning, then we both went back to the hotel..where we both rested. Went on a Cabo vacation for 10 days after! Actually a very good experience. -
For those that had surgery with pre-op weight in 220's
Georgiagirl27 replied to JALUVIC's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The day I had surgery I weighed 230 and I am close to 5"8. You know the crazy thing is that a year before my surgery my highest weight was 215 and I had taken diet pills and had gotten down to 167. Look at how much weight I gained back over a years time plus even more. When I decided to have this surgery I began to eat all the time because I kept telling myself that I would never be able to eat like that again . I stopped weighing myself so I had no idea I weighed 230. I had never weighed that much in my whole life . I decided to have surgery bc I was sick of losing and gaining and losing and gaining. My surgery was in February 15, 2014 and I have lost 92 pounds. I weigh 138 which was exactly my goal weight. It has taken me 10 months . I thank god everyday for this surgery and wouldn't change a thing. By the way I can eat whatever I want just much smaller amounts so I never feel deprived. I didn't do this to be miserable and feel like I was on some crazy diet . I went to Mexico and I used Dr. Quinones and he was wonderful . Good luck to you!!! -
I'm 43 (44 in March), 6 months post-op and just learned that I am 4.5 weeks pregnant. This is my 3rd pregnancy (kids are 16 & 11). I'm scared and excited....worried because I was warned to wait a year (I wasn't trying, TBH sex was barely happening so this is a big ass shock!!). I had an IUD in for 10 years prior to the surgery and decided to give my body a break due to my age and minimal sex life with my hubby. Well lo and behold, removing the IUD seems to have revived my libido! I'm sorry if this is TMI, but I am hoping to hear from any other 40 somethings who have been pregnant in their 40's post surgery. Any unique complications specific to our age group? How did or is it going for you?

I am 41 years old, female; I weighed 216 when I went to Mexico for surgery. I am 5'5". I have had many surgeries including a hysterectomy 6 years ago (and that's where my weight problems really began). I had my surgery at about noon on Friday, June 15th at Clinicia Victoria in Cancun, MX. Dr. Sergio Verbooden was the surgeon and the surgery was arranged by International Patient Facilitators - Sherri Burke. I spent the night in the hospital and was released on Saturday morning. I stayed in Cancun until Monday. The night in the hospital was horrific - no nurses came to check on me unless my husband would go find one and tell them I needed nausea or pain meds. They encouraged me to walk so I did throughout the night and found the only nurse on the floor asleep! The hospital and others tried to get my husband to leave the hospital and go stay in the hotel room and he flat out refused - take someone with you that will push to get the best care for you. Saturday was pretty bad too. Lots of nausea and pain - the nausea was much worse than the pain though. Sunday was better, I went down to the pool (4 flights of stairs) for a while. I flew home Monday and with the help of my family (xxoo to my husband and daughter) made it home last night at 10:30 pm. I am at work today! My advice to those considering surgery in a foreign county: 1 - understand what level of care YOU need and what's being offered. I had no post op diet, no info on how to care for the incisions. 2 - understand the medicines prescribed for you post op. I was given three prescriptions - one for nausea, one for reflux, and one for pain. None were effective so my husband went to the pharmacy three times and bought other drugs that were much more effective. Add another $200 to your spending money for Rx. 3- make sure you can travel home non-stop and with minimal baggage. Sitting upright in an airplane seat was very difficult for me. The turbulence was hell on the nausea, too. 4- have a recliner waiting for you at home! I can't state how much easier it is to sleep in a recliner than a bed right now. 5- Don't go alone. If I hadn't had my husband there to advocate for me, I think I would have emotionally crumbled. I'm not fluent enough in Spanish to understand what's being said all the time, most nurses don't speak English, and the surgery is painful. You need someone to stay in the room with you.
