    immediate post op diet....help

I have a full 3 weeks post op diet, of creamy soups, protein drinks, etc. I am sticking to it. My surgeon has done over 4000 and has been doing bands since they came out like over 10 years ago is it? He revised his rules and after all he has seen and experienced with his patients, these are his guidelines now. I bought his book and the rules wdre not as restrictive before. So, if he got stricter, it is for a reason and I don't want to lose my band. I just want to know I gave it my all and don't want to blow money since i am a self payer
  2. Im also a recent revision (6/23) band to bypass person. I also had barrett's. I am finally sleeping like a baby again. Reflux is gone! Best thing i did. 25 pounds down so far.
  3. Thanks puppypaws and icunurse for your comments. I want to have my eyes open when I do this. I have a pre-op discussion with my surgeon on August 10. Plan to ask his experiences with putting in a second band. My only choices are to 1) do nothing, 2) have band removed, 3) have it removed and replaced, or 4) pay the full tab and revise to a sleeve. Before I opt for #4, I would like to see what king of results I have with a second band. puppypaws and icunurse, how are you doing with weight loss since the second band? If there is anyone else out there with a second band experience, please chime in.

    stretching

Ok i have just been worried that i pushed it. I know my dr told me to eat till im full so that i can get as much nutrition from my food as possible and inwas afraid maybe i was just advancing too fast. I know people can stretch their sleeves and wind up needing revisions and i dont want that to happen i just wanna make sure im doing it right. Thanks everyone.

    Gallbladder?

So I have been very good for past few weeks on my insurance required diet (month1 of 3) but recently I started noticing pain under my right rib radiating to side and to the back, especially after I eat meat. One night few weeks ago it was really bad after I ate something fattier for dinner. I am going to see my surgeon next week to empty my band due to all of the heartburn I'm having, but will also bring this up... Have you had your gallbladder removed prior or during revision surgery?

    September 24th band surgeries

Hi fellow September 24th bandsters (well sort of). I wanted to just stop in and say hello. I was first banded in January 08 and my band had a leak and I was rebanded last week along with you September Samurais. Congratulations on being banded and I hope you will all be successful with the band! It's a life changing journey if you want it to be and if you work with the band properly. Each of you will have different experiences along the way. At some points it will be hard and you'll wonder if it's worth it, but just remind and encourage yourself to keep going because it is worth it (at least I think it is) and because you deserve it! If you gain weight one week, don't come down so hard on yourself and remember it's one week out of the entire year. Try to be positive and notice the small changes along the way because they help put things into perspective. And don't let people tell you that you took the easy way out because it's a lot of hard work! I forgot what it was like to be banded until I had to go through it again! My revision was not as invasive as the first one as all my dr. had to do was remove the old band and put in a new one (so there's not a tremendous amount of healing to do because most of the scar tissue is formed already to hold the band in place, but there is a small amount of new stitching that needs to heal). The first few days were just as rough as the first go-around though, but after that I have recovered a lot quicker than the first time. However, I'm still on the the post-op diet like the rest of you so I can empathize (gotta love them liquids! So happy to be on pureeds now!) Now that a week has gone by, it seems like most of you are feeling much better, which I'm happy to hear! It might feel like the first month or so will seem to drag on, especially with the post-op diet and you'll think you'll never get to chew real food again, but I promise, you will! It will pass, and before you know it, you'll be 2,3,5,8 months post-op and you'll wonder where the time went! If you have any questions please feel free to ask, and I will answer them to the best of my ability! Melody, I found out at the age of 20 that baby food is actually pretty good (who knew)! I'm a fan of the oatmeal and pears (or apples). I add some sweetnlow because it doesn't come sweetened and you would think you're eating the most delicious apple cobbler/crisp you've ever had. Cream of tomato soup is good and I add in some ricotta cheese to up the Protein, plus it adds a nice flavor. I also just microwave some ricotta (you could use cottage cheese too) with some tomato sauce and add basil and garlic and onion powder! It's like a good Pasta dish minus the pasta. I made some cream of sweet potato soup with babyfood sweetpotatoes (again the baby food). I did 1 jar of Stage 2 (I think like 3-4oz jar) and add a half cup of skim milk and like 1/4cup of Water and I heated it and added a bit of ricotta cheese and garlic/onion powder, salt and pepper and it was really good too. It had a nice sweetness to it too. The first time around I had butternut squash soup which I made from jarred butternut squash and followed the recipe on the jar. I also made a cream of cauliflower soup which was good too. I think I have the recipe if you want it. I think I found it here on LBT. Be well everyone! -Redtulips
  8. I'm not a revision so some of this I can't really answer, but as far as what you can eat, I can eat pretty much anything at four years out. I can't eat a ton of fat or sugar at one sitting, though, or I'll feel like crap -- but then again, we're not supposed to be eating that way *anyway*, so... btw - I went through UW as well
  9. Hi Johnny, we're here to help. I was sleeved in Feb. 2018, then revised to RnY in Oct. 2018 due to reflux. I think it was worth it. 1. How long did you take off work? I'm told 2 weeks. I usually work from home at a computer. Was there much pain? I took 2 weeks to return to a desk job. Pretty much the same as the sleeve and similar pain level. 2. How long before you could work out again? I had other complications that skewed this one, so I won't comment. 3. Did you lose more weight than you wanted? No, I still had about 20# to goal and it took me 4-5 months to get there. 4. Did it resolve your acid reflux (if that was the reason)? Absolutely and immediately. 5. Were you able to enjoy good food at special meals (holidays, etc.) with RNY? I'm terrified of losing ability to have a nice meal with family. What does a normal meal capacity look like at a year out? I have less restriction with my RnY than I did with the sleeve. I am eating 1-2 cup meals now (10 months out). 6. Are bowel movements normal at some point? No problems, in general. 7. Could you drink alcohol again? I'm fine going months without but at some point would like to enjoy a glass of champagne again. I can't right now as carbonation is brutal. I enjoy the occasional 1-2 glasses of wine. I can't handle carbonation, though.
  10. I had VSG on 11/30/2012 and have kept off about 110# in the 6.75 years since then. I am ~ 25# overweight but right about at my original goal. I'm 5'11" (male), 195#, 34" waist, very fit and active, etc. I was down to 175# when I ran marathons but have had a few hip issues that are now resolved and had a minor regain. I actually really like how I look / feel at this weight as I looked a lot older at the lower end. I'm pretty happy with my weight loss. But since about 2 weeks out I've had ridiculously bad GERD. I get an annual endoscopy (familial cancer syndrome) and ever since VSG, I have had erosions show up from the reflux. This last time it was diagnosed as Barrett's Esophagus, which is a pre-cancerous syndrome. I cannot control it fully with meds. I either take 5-6 PPI (200-240mg esomeprazole magnesium) or 6-8 extra strength Zantact (900-1200mg ranitidine). These are of course way above the recommended limits and in the case of the PPI there are long-term risks associated with it they don't want for me as I need good bone density for my hip implant. The bariatric surgeon (University of Wisconsin) has recommended for years that I convert to RNY and after the Barrett's Esophagus diagnosis, my PCP and the genetic cancer team both strongly recommended it as well. So I'm going to do it despite not really wanting to. I have been approved by my insurer and have an early November surgery date. I have several concerns, most notably that I don't really have more than 25# to lose or I drop to the < 18 BMI range and I don't want to be there. The surgeon says he will make a larger pouch and a smaller bypass portion but it's still there and I work out all the time so I already know I will lose more than I want in the beginning. I guess I have a bunch of questions. Feel free to answer any and all if you've had this type of revision: 1. How long did you take off work? I'm told 2 weeks. I usually work from home at a computer. Was there much pain? 2. How long before you could work out again? 3. Did you lose more weight than you wanted? 4. Did it resolve your acid reflux (if that was the reason)? 5. Were you able to enjoy good food at special meals (holidays, etc.) with RNY? I'm terrified of losing ability to have a nice meal with family. What does a normal meal capacity look like at a year out? 6. Are bowel movements normal at some point? 7. Could you drink alcohol again? I'm fine going months without but at some point would like to enjoy a glass of champagne again. I can't right now as carbonation is brutal. I'm just reluctant even though I know I have to do this. Any re-assurances would be helpful.
  11. @Creekimp13 I guess nothing has changed on this site. People judge food choices, goal weight, current weight, weight regain or revision. They judge how you work your own plan. I've been judged here because I enjoy sports (running, biking and hiking) If I never had surgery and enjoyed sports would I still get the same negative judgment? It's weird how judgmental some people can be.

    Questions - Sleeve 2/10/13

I was sleeved in November, not a revision. I take Prilosec every day and have no problems with heart burn or acid reflux. I have some hunger, but nothing like the intensity I had for years before surgery, and now I can either ignore it (which I could rarely do pre-op) or I can satisfy it with significantly less food. And since I'm now in the habit of dense-protein-first, I'm a whole lot more likely to make wise food choices. I've had no stomach spasms, and once my incisions stopped bothering me (which was about a week after surgery) I haven't had any other pain whatsoever. The best part, though, is the safety net aspect of the sleeve: When I eventually do give in to a craving and eat until I'm stuffed -- and I'm sure it will happen eventually -- my sleeve will limit the damage I can do in one sitting. I won't be ABLE to eat the entire package of Oreos at one go, ever again! Yippeeee! Then there are the NSVs: I'm off insulin, not taking any meds for my type II diabetes now. I'm off my BP med. I no longer need a daily NSAID for my OA and it's not because I'm just putting up with the discomfort - it is GONE! I'm no longer too warm all the time; I've changed the thermostat in my house from 70 to 73 degrees. I could go on re smaller clothes, etc., but you get the idea. I Love My Sleeve! And I love the suport I get on this forum! Thank you one and all.
  13. Have any revisionists had trouble getting motivation to lose more weight? I am going from lapband to sleeve on 2/20/19 and I feel like even though I have plenty to lose, I’m not feeling like I am going to, or that I am not as motivated to. Maybe it’s a defense mechanism? I am hoping it’s like when a woman has a baby and their “maternal instincts” kick in that I will feel more motivated after surgury to make weight loss a goal rather than just getting my lapband out... any one else struggle with this and if so, did that change after surgery? Thanks ahead of time.
  14. I've had my lap band since 2015, and I HATE it. It does what it should do, stops food from going into my stomach. But I get stuck a lot and it hurts, I end up vomiting it up, and anything unhealthy slips right through the band without a problem. I can eat gobs of cake, cookies, chocolates, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, casseroles, the works but it is painful to eat fruits, lean proteins, vegetables, etc. due to them getting stuck. It's like it's doing the opposite of what I want. When the food stays in the pouch, all I need to do is burp a couple times and boom, pouch is emptied. In short, It. Just. Does. Not. Work. I want a revision but I'm not sure what to do. I need to talk to a doctor, I realize, but I'm nervous. I thought the lap band would be the ticket out of fatness but it's absolutely not. I'm scared if I try something else, that won't work either. I love to eat and I can't stop. I've tried all kinds of diets. It just sucks, my appetite is insatiable and I need to do something about it. I'd love to hear from people who have had revisions and share what's different about their new procedure (whether sleeve or bypass). Sleeve makes me nervous because I've heard a lot about GERD. My spouse's grandfather died of esophageal cancer, due to years of GERD. But bypass makes me nervous because it seems like such a severe surgery... and I don't want to look like a skeleton in a bag of skin 😕 Any shared experiences would be appreciated!

    Complete lap band failure

I believe the issue here is the fact that your band is not filled. You have got to get the follow up care in order for it to work. You stated that you had twins and your saline was taken out. Why didn't you have it put back in after six weeks or so from giving birth? After care is the most important part of any wls, especially the band. I had restriction only because I did eat what I was supposed to and when I lost weight and felt I could eat more, I made me an appointment and had myself checked. Sure enough I would need a fill to take up the space from losing weight. Unfortunately 8 1/2 years later, I began having problems with it. It slipped, I lost restriction, gained almost all of the weight I lost, and now I'm sleeved. I don't get stuck anymore thank God. I still have restriction after I eat. What has changed for me is my taste buds. I can't eat or drink anything with a lot of sugar and I AM SOOOO HAPPY [emoji846]. Sugar was my addiction/problem and since I've been sleeved for almost two months now, I don't have that problem anymore. My suggestion is to get a fill so that you can get back on track. If you're mind is absolutely made up on having revision surgery, then good luck to you and best wishes. Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app

    I weigh too much? *cry*

Thank you ladies, I have my consult for a revision on 12/15. I'm also going to a seminar on the 11th. I should be well prepared. I hope, though, my surgeon doesn't freak when he sees my weight. This time around, I can barely stand, walk very short distances with a Rollator and am on oxygen. I'm a walking comorbidity. I hope they can do the revision to RNY in one shot. I pray.

    My Band Has Slipped

I've been struggling with slipping for nearly 4 months now, and finally went in for revision surgery last week. Just do what your dr recommends and know that you can and will get better. I am! It's discouraging, but it can be overcome.
  18. In a few hours I will arrive at the hospital for my revision from lapband to bypass...yay!!!I am so happy....can't sleep..December 28 is finally here!!

Amazed at the damage the lap did...

Yes, Gail10, it's daunting. If I get any answers that may help you, I'll post them here. Meanwhile, don't let them give you too much of a fill. Throwing up is not good for your gastro-intestinal tract, aside from being very uncomfortable. Just follow the food and drink instructions to the word. That is all in your best interest and you'll be doing all you can do that is within your control. We cannot control the adhesions or scar tissue, or inflammation that the band may cause in some people. Just so you know, a woman who had her band placed on the same day and by the same surgeon as I did in 2011 got her band revised to the sleeve last July, with no problems whatsoever and in a single surgery. Each of our bodies are different.
  20. Good morning. I had my original band surgery done Nov. 5th, of 2008. In the last 6 months or so my band has slipped and now I am scheduled to go in and have it repositioned and revised. I have my notes regarding all my post op surgery food do's and don'ts but can't find my information about prepping for my surgery. Last time I did liquids for 2 days prior. If anyone has any suggestions or helpful hints about what they ate (broth, Jello, sugar free pops I remember) I would appreciate the feedback. Thank you and best of luck to all those being banded, I would do it again in a heartbeat!! Julie

Has anyone had the lapband twice?

True revision surgeons are refusing to reband or reposition a band. The problem is (came out of a FL convention about 3 months ago) that when you replace a band or surgically reposition a band you stand about a 70% chance of a slip in the near future after the 2nd surgery. I have had a band and I have a sleeve. If you have any questions I'm happy to answer.
  24. hi, just found out my surgery date is 4/11. I am having a revision from lapband. Good Luck to all.
  25. Hi Starlane, Had you regained weight with the lap band? I am considering revision What pre op preparation did you have to do?
