i am 5 days post op. i was not what i would consider a sweet eater, although i should have probably evaluated that further because i was a sweet drinker. i was also glucose intolerant, so the few weeks before being banded i craved sweet drinks like crazy, and drank them. so this is my problem. my blood sugar has been very low, so my doctor told me to drink some juice yesterday. well, i had juice again today and, unfortunately, i think today i will exceed 800 calories (most of it on gatorade, juice, etc.). no, i am craving things. i cheated and had 2 mini sweetarts today. ugh!!! i never realized that the calories added up so fast until today after i had already had my juice, my gatorade, and my carnation instant Breakfast. lol --i have not been doing that every day. is any one else having this problem. if so, do you have any suggestions? i know it is just a matter of refocusing, or eating something healthy that is sweet to satisfy that taste. my dinner tonight will push me over the calorie threshold. i'm having pureed great northern Beans...nothing more but Water for me today.

Still feel hungry? I DO :(
123crod replied to aly.smoot's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I only have 2cc and seem to be fine that is only my first fill. They say sometimes it takes some time to kick in even up to 2 weeks so hang in there maybe restriction will come. Let us know. Drink lots and lots of water. If you like coffee with FF creamer and some equal that kills any hunger I have. -
Sleep apnea and surgery
lonestar5212 replied to lonestar5212's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Kacee Thanks for the response. I have to go back in two weeks for my CPAP machine. My paperwork for approval won't be submitted until Jan. 20th, so I think I will use it until then for sure. That is great there has been such a big improvement for you. I had heard that once I have the surgery and start losing weight, that the apnea will improve. I am happy to hear that it does actually happen. I also have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and now sleep apnea. I am glad I was tested, maybe it will help my cause of trying to get approved for the surgery. And congratulations on the great accomplishment of your weight loss!! -
I was just banded on March 24, 2008. I don't feel guilty. There are some that would have me feel guilty. My mom is against WLS. I'm sure that she has her reasons and that she is concerned for my health; but it didn't feel good to hear her say, "Well I'm glad it worked out for you" the afternoon after my surgery. My dad on the other hand has been very supportive. I weighed 314.2 lbs on the day of my surgery. I was miserable and insatiable. I was always hungry. My knees and hips hurt all the time, My acid reflux was a killer, and I had no energy. Now I'm only one week and one day post op - but I fell great - well I'm tired right now because I'm back at work. But mentally I feel great. I am down 10lb and I am ready to do the work to help the rest come off - I am walking more now and will begin an exercise routine when I reach six weeks post op. Hang in there and go for it. No one should feel guilty for doing something to better their selves. This was not a cop out for me. It was not an easy decision. I was terrified. On the day of surgery I friend of mine (who was banded a year ago) said to me, "I am so proud of you. You're 70% there; the rest is up to you." That's how I feel. I'm proud pf myself. I hope you will be proud of yourself too.

When you are eating - small bites and chew, chew, chew before swallowing. Larger bites and the body tends to automatically swallow on the 12th chew which could cause a logjam in your pouch causing sever pain and then having to vomit. Most people have posted they feel a pressure like a lump at the top of the stomach. Others sneeze, others feel pain, yet other experience hiccups. I found that I experienced pain and by then it was too late so my doctor told me to measure my food. When I measure I have no problem. You have to learn to listen to your body and stop don't force more food down or you will end up vomiting and in pain 3 oz of hard protein chewed thoroughly and 4-6 oz of veggies. Eat hard protein every 4 hours and you will not feel hungry. And yes, you will enjoy your meals even more as you will taste the food not gulp it down whole like no tomorrow.

Excuse the dumb question, but I need to start somewhere. I see some places have their own pre-opt drinks to buy. If you are going to Mexico, what kind of shakes can you buy. Just any that are high Protein? She said she could probably get me in, in 2 - 3 weeks. If not, then I will have to wait as Im going on a cruise and need to get thru that 6 week post op before I get on the cruise ship. They said then after the cruise I could get the first fill. So should I start the shakes or high Protein Drinks now. Just liquid or can I have other stuff prior to the surgery. I havent found the thread explaining what Im exactly supposed to be having if I have the surgery in 2 - 3 weeks. I turned in the application last night and she acted like she would know by today, but I havent heard anything.

Feelin' Good - Pre-Op Liquid Diet
sanderson replied to Mamadot's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started my 2 week liquid diet as well today. Not to bad as of yet. I went for a walk at lunch and that helped. No is the hard part (the weekend at home.) We eat out a lot over the weekends and this will be the test. My surgery is set for May 20th. Good luck to all.!!! -
My primary care Dr. ran some lab work on me and found that I am Vitamin D deficient. He prescribed some pills that I need to take once a week. I did a little research this am and found an article regarding low Vitamin D and weight lost. The article stated that vitamin d deficieny has been linked to slow weight lost. I begining to think that it is true. I have not lost any weight in about 2 1/2 weeks and I have been excersing and eating very healthy. Does anyone want to add any information regarding this. Thanks

Surgery Next Week or September?!
woo woo replied to Myonlybattle's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would go for it next week! No time like the present. I'm sure you and your husband can make it work, he will be there as soon as he can I am sure. I am also wondering if there is a chance that you are thinking of postponing so that you can overeat on vacation? If so I would say for sure do it next week as that is not a good enough reason to wait!! :) Good luck to you either way! -

Dark_Lovely replied to Mamadot's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
congrats! i start my liquid diet today i am drinking optifast drinks that my Dr. required that i purchase as part of the 2 week pre-op diet. I went on a binge too but i don't feel bad today i had a couple of hungry pains but other than that i am good. -
I have no comorbities and BMI of 37 and still had to do my 2 week liquid diet. They told me like many others to shrink my liver and also stated that it would help out with the healing... high protein... not so bad that I'm on the downside of it now 4.5 days left on it! YIPPEE:lol:

Hello all! I have been coming to this site for almost 4 months now and have gained alot of insight throughout my insurance process. I was approved by Aetna 2 weeks ago, and just met with my surgeon this past Thursday. He says I have to lose 20 pounds in the next 3 weeks. Since I gained weight during the insurance phase he wants to have me do pre-op for a total of 4 weeks. My surgery date is April 17th- so he'll meet with me the week prior (April 9th) to check on my progress and make sure I stuck to the pre-op plan, or else he says he'll move the surgery date up. I understand this is for my safety but ugh... It's soo tough! I have a severe headache and find that when I'm at work I don't think about food as much since I'm super busy, but at home now on the weekends is so tough. I'm told to have a protien shake for Breakfast, eat a piece of lean meat for lunch, and a protien shake for dinner. Is it ok if I eat other high protien foods? Like eggs? or cheese? Or should I just tough it out and do nothing but the shakes? Help.

Surgery next week and worried
innertube replied to cmcallister2's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Basically, you need to think Atkins diet, plus at least 60 to 70 grams of protien, whey chocolate is really good., I used 2% milk., or you could use 1%, cut out all carbs., ie: low fat yogurt, protien drinks, protien bars, lean meats, fish, grilled chicken only.. keep your fat and carbs to a minimum.... again think Atkins... I did this for 7 days before surgery...thanks to some advise and I am doing great, I had surgery on 3/7 and so far I am doing awesome and I have lost 7.8 lbs.. Hope this helps, good luck. and don't worry its not as bad as you think.... :huh2: -
any texans go threw Dr. Wade Barker?
SwanGal replied to heatherpretz's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dr. Jayaseelan did my best friend's lapband. She has only wonderful things to say about him. He wasn't on my insurance plan though. Dr. Barker was extremely nice and answered every question I had. I am sure I'll be learning a lot more in the weeks to come. My cardio thing is on the 10th and then my EGS?? on the 22nd. I need to set up an appt. with the psych person. -
Surgery Next Week or September?!
DallasSleeve replied to Myonlybattle's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As someone who had my sleeve done last summer, June 10, I would actually tell you to wait. While I usually believe you should just do it because you will be sad you waited, traveling was a HUGE PAIN last summer for me! I traveled at 4 weeks out and 8 weeks out and was miserable both times (nauseous and dehydrated, plus it was hard to find things to eat). It's not like you are waiting because you want to be able to eat more, I just think those first few weeks are tough enough without throwing in traveling. I have lost about 120 pounds since last June- the weight will come off and then you can get to traveling and living life to the fullest next summer! I leave for Cancun in a week and am so excited! -
I'm on the 15th... Thinking-I'm on day 4 of my liquid diet and just realized I was supposed to be drinking Low Sugar stuff too.. Not that i was adding sugars, just drinking juice with my Protein drinks... .OOPPSS I've already messed up... Maybe not too bad... I'll get it right starting tomorrow. I hope that it doesn't matter that much. I have been eating 750-100 cal, low fat, not too high carb. DOING- working my hiney off getting everything at work and with the kids lined up for next week when I'm out of town. Also packing my bags, getting all my stuff that I need together for when I get back home, Reading, reading, reading... about what to eat when I get home, what to do when I get home, etc... And I'm exhausted from all the running around. feeling- nervous- Nervous that I wont lose weight after going thru all of this more than anything. I don't lose weight well at all. I can follow a healthy diet and exercise and only lose minimal weight. I just don't want this to be another failure. I know everyone has told me that I WILL lose, but I still worry about it. A little sad that my relationship with my "friend food" is changing.. forever. BUT Excited- about what the future brings-- I am focusing on the WHY I am doing this... For my kids, for my health. AND, excited that I am going to be able to cross my legs again, that my knees will feel better, that I will be able to buy clothes in a regular store, that I will feel better, that I will be healthier... HOW BOUT YOU???

VSG in less than 12hrs! I'm a nervous wreck!
anonbaribabe replied to ABawdyMermaid's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had surgery last week and had a lot of the same fears. If you followed the pre-op diet, your liver will have shrunk (honestly, even if you cheated a time or two, your liver will be okay if you mainly stuck to the diet). I was also worried about anesthesia and not waking up, too. But don't worry! Your anesthesiologist gets paid the big bucks because she's a smarty pants badass who knows how much to give you and will be monitoring you all the way throughout your surgery. Same with your surgeon—they're experts and they literally do this all the time. Before surgery I was offered what was described to me as "something to calm me down." I, being a ball of nerves, happily accepted. No idea what it was, I didn't care, but it mellowed me out. I remember being wheeled into the OR (which I remembered thinking looked nothing like the ORs in Grey's Anatomy—pretty sure this thought is evidence that whatever they gave me was working) and then a couple of people from the surgical team were talking to me and I just listened and that's it: That's all I remember. The next thing I knew I was in recovery. As far as blood clots, I was given two shots of heparin while at the hospital—one before surgery and one the next day. Some patients are sent home with shots to prevent blood clots, so if you're concerned about this, you may want to ask your surgeon if this would be a good fit for you. Good luck with your surgery! You'll do great! -
Okay, I have a question. My surgery is the 8th of December and I'm on my pre-diet. I'm doing great but I have a question about eating on T-giving. My diet now consists of : Per day 3 Protein shakes 1 lean cuisine with <300 calories,<45 carbs, >14 Protein 5 ounces of lean protein 2 cups of salad 2 tbsp. dressing 1/2 cup green veggies Okay, my question is do you think instead of the lean cuisine, I could just substitute turkey and a salad? I would think it would be okay but I don't want to do anything that could jeopardize my surgery and my Nutritionist is off today. Help please.

Any one else surgery schedule for end on month?
Joycey replied to Crissy A's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My procedure is set for Sept 3 but I start the shakes on the 13th as well. I don't plan to go crazy this weekend though. I think I will try to ingest the most protein and vegetables I can though to get some nutrients in before I can't. -

Today was my appt with the psych on March 13, 2009. It went pretty smoothly I talked to the Dr for about 40 min. about my childhood, education level and my weight loss attempts. When I was leaving her office she said that I was approved, (I don't think she was suppose to tell me that; she had not given me the computer tests yet). I had to do 4 test on the computer and boy did it take long. I was there from 10:15 am to 2pm. When I got home finally I was so tired I had to lay down for a couple of hours. That test drained me. Well next week will be my physical from my regular doctor and my nutritional consult. Hope everyone is doing well. BTW I started a required Exercise Program and boy is it kicking my bunns. TTYL

feeling discouraged
lisacaron replied to jenwebber's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is all true, plus your body is still healing. It took me a good 3/4 months to feel like I didn't have surgery. Where I was back to feeling like myself again with no pulls and pains. Keep to the program, and you will lose slow and steady. This is not a gastric by pass. It's going to take some time for your body to learn to work with your band. Your doing great keep up the good work! -
Maryland anne arundel county
Lthomas replied to NewLife4Me7's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi everyone :-) I live in Bethesda - Montgomery county. 2 weeks postop! Had my surgery 6/4. No issues, tolerating an almost regular diet, but moist foods go down best. Just started the zombies 5k app, trying to work out every other day. So far so good, 18 lbs down including the 2 week preop liquid diet. -
its normal, i had surgery on April 23, and sometimes i still have that pain, i guess up until 608 weeks, hang in there
