Food Changes and Returning to Tolerable

I'm almost two months out also, bypass was on 2/14. I feel good about about the weight loss but wonder how to live and enjoy food again. I'm 43lbs down and also discouraged about my taste buds which are gone. I eat about 350-500 calories per day and struggle with almost everything as nothing tastes good anymore. I am just trying to keep food down-everything smells bad and makes me gag a little. I tolerate canned soup and broth And strangely, diet low carb ice cream but only about 3oz at the most. I saw someone suggest refried beans with cheese. I didn't think it would wrk, but I have had 1-2 oz a day for two days and they have been ok. I'm hoping the taste buds get better because I want to enjoy food Especially meat, again and balance it with my new life. Good luck to you in your journey.
  2. I’m 6 years post a mini gastric bypass and still haven’t found a solution to my very very embarrassing problem. I suffer from foul smelling stools that can be runny sometimes. It causes me a great deal of embarrassment and distress.. I can’t use toilets anywhere outside my own toilet in my house.. and no one can use the toilet after me because the smell is very foul and lingers for a very long time.. I also suffer from a lot of smelly farts that usually start around evening time (hardly anything in the morning) ... no matter what I eat or what I eliminate from my diet it doesn’t cause a difference.. Does anyone seem to have a solution for this or managed to understand why? Please don’t tell me it’s my diet because I’ve tried changing it an eliminating so many things and nothing works.

What is the average weightloss at 6 months?

You look amazing! What you are doing is obviously working. Keep up the good work!! I only had my bypass done in March, but in 2013 I had a sleeve done. By 6 months I had lost 80lbs. But again, that was a sleeve. Bypass may be faster. Also, to echo other comments, it all depends on the person. You’re young so it will come off faster. Lucky!

    Revision - 4 Weeks In

I had the bypass done because I regained 70lbs and couldn’t get it off. I went back to doing the same stuff I did before. I tried diets and diet pills and even worked out every day for months and nothing. I gained the weight because I never learned how to eat after I had the sleeve done. Also, I had some personal issues and regrettably decided to drown them with moscato. A lot of moscato. That accounted for the first 30lbs of regain. I started putting on weight and couldn’t figure out how or why because I was still eating so very little. Then one day it hit me like a ton of bricks that wine is nothing but sugar and I had drank my way around my sleeve. Then I felt hopeless. I quit the drinking but I still just kept gaining weight. I gave up again. And then I decided that I am not going to do that so I looked in to getting resleeved. After doing some research I found out that 20% of sleeves have to be revised so I decided to go for it. I had an appointment with my original surgeon who said he wanted to do an EGD to see what was going on. This whole time I still felt restriction. I only over ate a handful of times by accident and didn’t make terrible food decisions (not so great but nothing to justify that much gain - or so I thought but that’s another story) so there was really no logical reason for me to keep gaining. Anyway, he did the EGD to see that I had a hiatal hernia and very mild stretching at the top of my sleeve because of the hernia. He said the best way to repair that in a sleeve patient is a bypass. Then he told me about all the pros with a bypass. I’m sitting there thinking “Why didn’t you tell me this the first time!”. So I did it. I was afraid to because it’s so much more invasive than a sleeve but why do the same thing over again? Why not just go for what is proven to be more successful? So here I am. It’s different this time. There is much more restriction than I had with the sleeve. I know that will subside a little after the honeymoon phase but I learned from my prior mistakes. And if I hit an emotional bump in the road I am going to see a therapist instead of the bottom of a bottle. I still hate myself for throwing it all away the first time but I’m slowly forgiving myself. It gets better with each pound I lose.
  5. Hi all, I had my sleeve surgery in 2015 and I have never looked back since! I absolutely love it! I followed the doctors orders and changed my food choices, so I haven't had any complications. All of my pre-existing conditions went away (pre-diabetes, HB, joint pain, back pain). 5 years later and when I see the scale go up a few pounds, I immediately make revisions in my diet. Problem solved! I can lose weight easier now than before the WLS. You will not regret choosing the sleeve. Good luck!
  6. I had a gastric sleeve over 10 years ago. I weighed 320 and was 5'2" and 54 years old. I also have asthma - life long and I needed a surgery that would allow me to take oral steroids and other life sustaining medications that also cause weight gain... but breathing is an important concept. I could not have a bypass surgery, as my pulmonary docs said that the surgery would make the use of oral steroids impossible and I am prone to pneumonia from years of impaired airways. (And yes, I am working from home right now !!!) I went from 320 pounds to 180 pounds. I unfortunately gained 40 pounds back in the last few years, mostly due to not being able to exercise much and well.... life. I got pissed off at myself last July and went back to high protein, and low carb and more veggies and cut out the slider foods... and I have lost 25 pounds. Yes, I am still obese, but for me, who weighed 320 pounds, I now weight 193. (27 pounds down actually) since this July. At 64 years old I will probably stick around the 180s to 190. Yes - it could and should be less, but my doctors are pleased and I have been pretty darn healthy for me. I take care of my critters, keep up a house, a career as a social work supervisor, I garden and am active. For me, I have kept off over 100 pounds and now am back to having lost 137 pounds and holding. I highly recommend it. Oh, I was in the hospital 2 nights after surgery. Mostly to stabilize my lungs. And I had surgery at 54 years old

    Dr. Lopez Corvala in Tijuana

I flew to San Diego 2/13 alone and had gastric bypass 2/14. They kept me there 4 nights and took me back to the airport. The cost out of pocket was $11k, half the price of a self pay in Florida. This amount covered everything and it was a success. I am down 43 lbs and tomorrow it will be 8 weeks. The hospital is nice and the nurses and doctors were very good. I have received no follow up at all but they gave me numbers to call if I want to. I have felt really good with no issues. I recommend Dr Corvala and his team. Helps if you learn a little Spanish though! Hope everyone's surgery goes great and be well!
  8. So my Doctor’s office called me yesterday morning to set up my pre-op appointment. I went today at 8am and I’m scheduled to proceed with Gastric Bypass on 4/27 at 6am. Originally, things were postponed, but yesterday they called and told me my insurance approved my surgery and asked me what date I was looking at. I told them asap and they got me scheduled. We were asked to wear a mask and everyone in the office wore them as well. Only about 5 people were allowed in and they had the waiting room spaced out for social distancing. We were also screened for high temperature and any Covid-19 symptoms before we were allowed into the office. I’m excited, yet trying not to get my hopes too high in case I get rescheduled in the next 19 days.
  9. Hey everyone. I had the gastric bypass 7 weeks ago today. I have a question about fats. I have been told by my surgeons office that foods high in fat and sugar will make me sick, cause dumping syndrome, blah blah blah. However, they tell me I can have a tablespoon of peanut butter. High fat, right? And there are other foods I have questioned on their list that to me would be high fat. So my question is, what is the bad fat that I need to be looking for? Is there a difference in how my body will react to it? Obviously greasy foods are not even in the picture. I get that that is bad fat but I'm talking things like nuts, etc. Thank you for any insight.

    Revision - 4 Weeks In

You know someone was going to ask.... so i'm asking.... Why did you revise to GB? I org had the band for 8 years, went 3 years without any WLS, was sleeved Aug, 28, 2019. I did great with the band. 5'2" SW 232, got down to 143 and stayed there till my band was removed. then regained about 10lbs per year with no WLS..... So i got back to 173.5..... Today i'm happy to say im at a steady 129. I was a slow loser the first time and still think im a slow loser, but i have to say the sleeve was faster in comparison. Hope you are feeling great. 18lbs in 4 week is just amazing.... keep up the great work.
  11. My bypass was done in December but I still can't eat much. I basically eat hummus, yogurt and cottage cheese because they are the only things I can keep down. I have pain when swallowing liquids or eating certain foods. I know with the first couple bites if I am going to tolerate a food item and most times I just give up and go without. I throw up at least 3 days a week and usually continue to throw up for hours.. long after my stomach is empty. Anyone else experience this? I had to cancel an appointment with my surgeon due to covid19 concerns ( I am immunosuppressed due to lupus. )

    Revision - 4 Weeks In

So I had a sleeve to bypass revision on 3/11. I am so lucky I had it when I did because of this virus. Anyway, I was worried because with my sleeve I lost 118 in a year and heard with the revisions it is much slower. Like everyone else, I want my excess weight gone as quickly as possible. Well, I am happy to to say I’ve lost 18lbs in 4 weeks. It’s a little slower than it was with my sleeve, but still, 18 POUNDS!!! I already can see the difference and I’m back in size 12’s. The only issue I’ve had is with my pain pump incision. I seem to have an abscess under it but that isn’t related to weight loss. I’m really happy with my progress so far. So I’m posting this for anyone who is worried about weight loss being hard after a revision. It’s not. I’m happy to say I’m a loser again!! I’m feeling much more restriction with my bypass. I’m also making healthier choices this time around whereas last time I ate whatever the hell I wanted and I know that’s why I had a regain. I learned nothing about how to eat healthier. I’m eating things like broiled vegetables and tilapia and salmon which I thought I wouldn’t like but holy crap is it good! I feel so good this time around, like I’m going to keep it off this time because I’ve actually learned from my first failure. So, my fears are subsiding and I feel fantastic. No worries at all. YAY!!! Take care fellow losers!!
  13. Hi, I am having the same issue, well actually I was having the issue, but then I started using a food journal again where I was able to maintain my weight. But since the quarantine I've gone back to losing a bit too fast in my opinion. Some people don't get it, it is scary. I was told that I might have to have a revision surgery if I continue like this, which I don't want. So I would say to journal your food, figure out what you are consuming including the calories, add more of the healthy stuff like proteins and maybe it is even time to add in healthy carbs such as veggies, quinoa, beans, lentils, and oatmeal. Maybe even do weight bearing exercises as opposed to cardio exercises. I hope that you can figure things out.
  14. Hello everyone what a ride it has been. I spent a year researching bariatric surgery before choosing RNY BYPASS. my highest weight was 322lbs and I was very unhealthy and probably heading for an early grave. With a BMI of 43.7 now today after 7.5 months I've managed to hit 170LBS. that's a total loss of 152lbs in 7.5 months and I think I'm done and in maintenance mode. I've started adding more variety and carbs into my diet but still being mindful of my Weight. I'm just so grateful for the bypass it has completely and literally changed my metabolism for the better. Lately I have indulged here and there on a few squares of chocolate or a Mars Bar or even a cup of icecream without it affecting my weight at all. it's like I'm a new Man. thank you all for your ongoing support. MIKEY

    Regret

Hey Celeste, sorry to hear you are still having a bad time, not sure if you remember but i went through hell too...still am struggling 7 months on (i had the emergency bypass a week after my sleeve). I really think it sounds like you need an endoscopy so they can get the camera in there and have a proper look. You are getting so dehydrated to need hospital admission and if the swallow test showed nothing then they need to investigate further, so let them know! Not easy when you feel so awful but just do it and get sorted. I got rudely woken by bile rushing up in my sleep the other night and I inhaled it, I literally thought I was dying, pure acid going down your airway is horrendously painful. I now have a wet chunky cough so am trying to cough half hourly to prevent pneumonia developing. Like seriously when are all the bl**dy issues going to stop waaaaaa Ignore any nasty people on here they aren't worth the energy Big Hugs x
  16. I lost 30lbs, sounds good huh BUT I went through absolute hell. I had 2 major surgeries a week apart because my sleeve went wrong so ended up with a bypass, I have had nothing but problems since, nausea/vomiting/bile coming up in my sleep which I inhaled and the burn in my oesophagus was so intense I thought I might die then and there (that was just last week 7 months out), due to inhaling it I now have a chest infection and I am trying to cough hard every 30 mins to prevent pneumonia developing. So, you haven't lost 30lbs but you HAVE lost! THAT is all that matters. Be happy with what you have it could be worse. Good luck xx
  17. I am almost a year from anniversary date of gastric bypass. Woot woot! But my knees are now killing me. Before the surgery I had issues with my knees and had anthroscopic surgery on the right one. However, now both my knees hurt so bad that climbing stairs or sitting low has become a huge pain. Could it be muscle loss and now too much weight is bearing down? I’m just at a lost. Anybody else experiencing this??

    Lap band adjustment

Mine was eleven years old and even though I had no fill in mine and was still vomiting almost every time I ate. I could only get things like ice cream, pudding and yogurt through it. I went to a different surgeon (the one who did the band moved away about 5 years ago) and said it had to come out because eventually I wasn't even going to get water through it. During the band removal and revision to a RNY they discovered that the band had slipped, and the slip caused a hiatal hernia. I had this done a bit over 4 months ago and weigh less than the lowest weight I ever got with the band. If your surgeon doesn't want to consider removing it, maybe you should consider finding another surgeon who will work with you before it gets worse.
  19. I had a mini bypass March 16th and have only just been able to lie down on my right side. I prop myself up on a pillow to make it comfortable. The pain relief helps but the bruising i had was pretty bad so that made sleep awkward.

    3 weeks in!

Its similar to a RNY but only has one join instead of 2. http://www.valsamidis-surgery.com/mini-gastric-bypass/

Please define a "mini bypass" for me. I don't know what that means. Thank you. Grace

    3 weeks in!

I'm 3wks out of a mini bypass on Monday and have only lost 14lbs. It's going a lot slower than I thought it would 😣

    FOAMIES!

Tried to have 4 strawberries for breakfast this morning, but i don't think it agreed with me. Not long after i was vomiting white foam 🤢 I felt better about an hour or so later. Maybe it was too soon? I'm almost 3wks out of mini bypass surgery. Anyone else had this? I'm one of those people who absolutely refuses to throw up and will fight it to the end.
  25. Me too!!! I’m frustrated but things could be worse. Mine was 3/18. Three days before they cancelled. Then it was 4/29 Now it’s nothing. I’m for A revision. I wish everyone health and we will all get there soon enough. Be well.
