I had my surgery July 22, 2010
Joie85 replied to craigmorganfan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey!! I was banded on July 20th, i'm doing pretty good. My tummy still sore but no more pain meds since yesterday morning. I have been eating yogurt, cream of wheat, broth and i tried pudding. I am kinda tired of the sweet stuff now and over just the beef and chicken broth LOL Do you still feel some discomfort in your tummy from the surgery? -
I start my pre-op diet on Monday and thought it would be nice for us to have a tread where we can talk about our pre-ops if we have them. I have to do 4 Protein shakes a day. 64oz Fluid and unlimited non starchy veggies. I can also choose 6 of the following - v8, oatmeal/cream of wheat, low fat yogurt with no fruit, no sugar added applesauce and sugar free pudding. My plan is to make a huge pot of veggie Soup tomorrow to eat as lunch/dinner, also planning salads, sauteed veggies and fresh veggies in a plain greek yogurt dip (hidden valley ranch). I figure the oatmeal and cream of wheat will do me for Breakfast along with a Protein shake when I get up. I love sugar free Popsicles and can see myself eating lots of them! I am worried about doing it for 2 weeks, worried about coming up with different ideas and such, but am thankful my pre-op does have some variety available!! How about anyone else?

me and protein don't mix
momofjal replied to mzblaze36's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I HATE protein! It makes me sick to my stomach, also! I found one shake that I can take, but it takes all day to try and get it down. It is premier protein, I got it at Sam's and it has 30 g. I am able to eat yogurt now. The best one so far is Dannon Light and fit GREEK. They have strawberry, blueberry, and vanilla. They have 80 cals. and 12g of protein. I eat 3 a day right now to get my amount of protein. Much better then the shakes and powder. -
My pre-op diet starts on the 23rd and it’s 3 shakes, yogurt and clear liquids for 12days and then clear liquids the last two days.

Hi all, Just wanted to update, I am 11 days out and feeling really good. I have some port pain but it is just "uncomfortable" I haven't even felt a need for tylenol. Still on liquids, I am starting to feel hungry. I have been eating soup, water, yogurt and protein drinks. According to the the doc it will be another week before I can go to solid foods. I am feeling ready but I understand the implications if I don't adhere to the instructions. My clothes are getting big and friends are starting to notice that I have lost some weight. When I think about losing the 20+ lbs that I have already lost, I see 2 10lb bags of potatoes and realize that is a lot of mass to lose.... very cool.

ARe you serious about the Jello (i presume the sugar free) on the Pre-Op diet. i'll check that out with my Massage Therapist (also a Naturalist). What he has been telling me is that yes - the short statement is "Shrink the Liver" - however the longer version has the yogurt forcing the organs to start purging the fat and toxins out. That knowledge has helped. on many levels. Thanks for the responses. It seems i have trouble accessing the site from my home system, so i'm stuck waiting until i get to work each day. - for now any way.

Okay - first timer here. Jan 25 is magic day. nerves kicking in. need some ground advise for the pre-op diet. i can't do cottage cheese - havn't done white milk or close faxcimilies since i was 6 months old - can't handle the smell, taste - even the thought of it makes me shiver - Yogurt however - i have gotten to like over the past few years. but two weeks of yogurt and tea? - are they serious? i'm going to try - but does anyone have some "tricks" they can share. i'm not sure what happens if i'm not able to hold out for 2 weeks of yogurt and tea?

Losha- If you are ready for the surgery, you are ready for a life change. I've been morbidly obese for 15 years, and you must realize that this is not a cure all, and that the liquid diet, the semi soft diet, and following your doctors orders will be your goal. I've had the band since 8/2/06, and even tonight, I realized that I ate my yogurt too fast. There will be days when you don't loose weight, and days when you do. It will stop the yoyo syndrome, and you won't be able to eat a lot at one time, but you will suceed if you follow your doctors orders, so that should be your goal - my best to you and good luck Caroline

How is weight loss for people over 50?
sunshine6855 replied to debi717's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi all. I haven't posted in a while. I went for my 1 week check up and my doc told me I could progress to soft foods for a week and the move to solids, going slowly and testing the foods to make sure I did ok. I have had egg salad, refried beans, yogurt, black bean soup, and today, watermelon. The watermelon was devine. and easy to eat. Indiogirl, I pray that your tests turn out as well as your sister's. -
How is weight loss for people over 50?
debi717 replied to debi717's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi, Cheri. Good luck on your surgery. I had mine back in February '07. To date, I've lost 48 lbs. and I'm feeling so much better, and I still have 100 lbs. to go! Honestly, I think you have to be committed to changing the way you eat to maintain your weight loss over the long-term. The lapband will keep your portions under control without too much effort on your part. If you eat too much, you're going to feel uncomfortable, and unless you stick yourself with pins for pleasure you'll probably want to avoid that. However, Desserts seem to go through the band without any trouble. For myself, I've had to commit to limiting myself to one dessert a week. Sometimes it's a medium sized cup of ice cream at Coldstone Creamery, sometimes it's a piece of cake, BUT it's once a week -- no excuses. Believe me, the first 3 months that was hard, but now I don't think about chocolate everyday at 3:00 pm and then again at 9:00 pm. I've learned to substitute that stuff with a cup of yogurt and a 2 TBS of Go Lean Kashi Crunch, and I've even learned to enjoy sliced fruit in the afternoon. The short answer is that the lapband has worked for me and I believe I can keep the weight loss off if I don't make the choice to go back to my old habits. The lapband has curbed my hunger and lessened my desire to eat for the sake of eating. That's what the lapband is meant to do. It was a good decision for me. The problems are almost non-existent and when I have a problem it's because I'm eating too fast. PB's are not this huge, dramatic event I thought they would be before I had the surgery. Do yourself a favor and don't pay attention to that kind of talk. You can avoid them if you eat the way your suppose to eat -- small bites, chew well, eat slowly. If you do PB, you won't feel the need to call a doctor or run to the emergency room. Enjoy the journey. -

Kelli since your body is now using fat reserves for energy your fatigue is probably due to recovering from major surgery in itself or potentially dehydration vs not enough calories. * hugs* this too shall pass I get any liquids the first week after surgery: tomato soup, milk, smooth yogurt, etc. They told me creamed soups ar eok if blenderized or strained. (but of course follow your own directions). I'm sure it's good you chewed chunks really well. How did you tolerate the soup?? My understanding is it's not to prevent stomach pouch stretching, but to prevent vomiting and band slippage while the stomach heals where they've stitched the lower portion to the new pouch to secure the band. I'm in so much pain today I'm tempted to take my post op pain medication. I did something to my back overnight at work. I just took some tylenol so hopefully that'lll do the trick. Usually I take motrin but that's out being pe-op. I just have the rest of today and tomorrow left. I'll sleep on and off today then all night since I worked graveyard last night, have an all-day class tomorrow....then surgery Tuesday at 7am (Pacific Time) I'm getting rather nervous.

December Bandsters!! How Ya Feeling??
sandybraman replied to loretta\ Baconton Georgia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you so much blue for the explanation about the phrenic nerve. I thought I had a muscle spasm - I've had to put heat on it the last 2 nights - because eating or drinking doesn't seem to affect it as much as when I get tired. I'm 8 days out from my surgery and, like you, have bounced between a BMI of 20-35 for the last 20 years. I feel great (except for my neck), but not graduating to "mushies" until next week. Can't wait! In the meantime, I'm eating plenty of Soup (a can of Campbell's chicken Noodle pureed in the blended and then thinned out just a little tastes really good), cottage cheese and Greek yogurt. Thanks for the heads up about Carnation Instant Breakfast - I can't seem to drink the Protein shakes because they really screw up my digestive system. It is so great that we have all of this support - I am in awe of your power walking (getting on the treadmill after this). I'll tell you, though, like I told my sister last month - that's what you get for nursing! LOL! -
I have tried yoplait Greek yogurt and it is pretty good? Anyone else try other brands? What's the best?

Chobani and now I am in love with Noosa, its a Australian yogurt, I add a scoop of unflavored protein to it as well as 1/4C of fresh fruit.....its great!

Frozen Yogurt Six days out?
maharet111 replied to kimikat3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Omg I need some popcorn now..I get a huge laugh everyday at the food nazis.. I ate sugar free gummy bears last night..I sh1t my brains out and my stomach cramped bad! I self paid so I guess it was a 25k sh1t. I definitely want a freaking refund!!!! I won't be making that mistake again P.S. eat the yogurt or don't..it doesn't matter. What matters is you hold yourself accountable for your choices, which from what I can tell is you would have. -
Frozen Yogurt Six days out?
kimikat3 replied to kimikat3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow! Thanks for the attack! Actual I was being serious. And yes, I did pay for my surgery (not that that should be a factor in any case. This surgery is the same regardless). Perhaps I should have been more specific in starting sugar free frozen yogurt OR sorbet. I am not at the point where I can have Greek yogurt yet, otherwise I would help myself to some of that. I realize that frozen yogurt doesn't have "nutritional value" but at this point in the game, I'm not getting much nutritional values from anything that I'm taking in (besides my protein shake). -

-Greek yogurt with berries and a couple teaspoons of Special K Protein cereal (can add Protein powder to the yogurt) -Morningstar vegetarian sausage patties with cheese and sometimes SF syrup (a couple of times I've had with half a low-carb English muffin or half a thin bagel but the bread fills me up too much and I can't eat enough protein, so I just stick to the patties) -Morningstar vegetarian meatballs with ricotta, parm cheese, and tomato sauce -Before I was on solids, I liked diet hot chocolate with protein powder -oatmeal with Greek yogurt on top, chia seeds (not eating these yet though), and a little SF jam -Refried or whole Beans with cheese, Greek yogurt and salsa (sounds weird for breakfast but I really like this--you might too if you like your grits savory) -Low-carb/high-protein pancake made from egg whites, protein powder, flax meal. I probably eat the veggie patties the most bc they have 10 g of protein each, so I can almost eat 2 of them or 1.5 with some melted cheese or part of a cheese stick.

Thanks everyone! I am 1 week out of the hospital and just began to "eat solids" yesterday. I was actually pretty scared to try. I began with egg whites scrambled. Once yesterday and once today. Had a Fiber choice chewable and am drinking lots of Gatorade g2. Began my bariatric vitamins once again as well. Still weak but because it's summer in the So. Cal desert I'm not venturing out much. I do get into the pool late in the day and just walk and tread water. My nutritionist told me to get yogurt with probiotics so I will try some later. NEVER EVER want to go thru that again.

I do too!! I buy alot of there name stuff since i have been sleeved I read every label and really just stick to less is more. They have an awesome nonfat greek yogurt 12 grams of protein and their own grilled chicken ingredients are chicken breast salt and olive oil thats it no preservatives. 100 calories for 3oz 21 protein cant beat it. Try them out next time its healthy and easy . Im always on the run so its convenient . Im gonna look up Maries Gone Crackers right now. lol

Why no lobster? I'm allergic, myself, but my favorite meals now are shrimp, crab, scallops, etc. I eat frozen nf/sf yogurt, a small bite or two of a brownie, a Hershey kiss here and there... Difference is, I savor it instead of horsing it down without tasting it. I log it and I stay under my calories, fat and carbs. I don't recommend this if a small bite will set you up for failure, though. I didn't get fat off sweets, so these are not my downfall. You will not see me trying chips or other fatty salty Snacks. That's where my house of cards will collapse.

Calling March Sleevers
charismatic replied to AskingForAFriend's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m having a bit of a time judging how much I can eat. I typically try for 1/4 -1/2 of a cup. Even then it really just depends on what I’m eating. I haven’t had any issues with the types of food thank goodness. I’ve tried Soups, ricotta bake, meatballs (chicken), mashed cauliflower, yogurts. Today I had my first experience overeating by mistake. I tried some mushed avocado with tzatziki sauce. It was delicious and I didn’t even eat half of the avocado but I got the bloated can’t burp and wanna vomit feeling for about an hour! 🤢 it was awful. This really is a learning experience. Trying to get in calories and Protein from actual food when you can barely eat. -
I’m scheduled for bypass on Oct 8. I have had a previous surgery. (Lapband). I did the 2 week diet then before and after surgery. Slow progression to mushy foods. Followed it to the T. It was not easy...I can say the food funerals yep we held them before the two weeks nearly every day but you know what the truth is you are going to eat those foods again. Hopefully in a good and balanced way thinking of all your hard work and surgery before taking the bite right? Band didn’t work well for me, as vigilant as I was my body rejected it and it had to come out before it did any serious irreversible damage. I’m ready for this next step...easing into the diet by eliminating one meal a week and replacing with a shake. This week I am up to breakfast and lunch 2 snacks of yogurt/pudding eating only a small dinner. Monday should be all liquids....easier at work all day home and the weekends are my challenge. One big incentive is my sons engagement party is the Sat before surgery...preop weight loss means a nice dress for Mamma 😉
