  1. the above poster is right - 95 lbs is a healthy weight for someone 4'11" tall. Maybe I'm missing something here ??? Also, why are they talking about doing revision surgery? You mean reverse the duodenal switch? I was a slow loser from the get-go, so I can't relate to losing super fast, but the last 20 lbs or so were a bear to get off. My weight loss slowed to a crawl (we're talking like 2 lbs a month). I also gained 10 lbs after hitting my lowest weight, which I really needed to do, and I stabilized there for two years (I've since gained 10 more lbs with I did NOT want to do, but we're working on it...)
  2. Stay Safe and Hopefully Well/Healthy Everyone! Hi, I got the Loop Duodenal Switch almost a year ago, done June 2019. Please, if you post, say the surgery without abbreviating it, as I am not familiar with the initials/abbreviations of the surgeries, unless you want to post a list that would be appreciated too. I wanted to know if you ever experienced losing weight too fast. If so, did it ever slow down, or did you gain it back? I have been told that I might have to have revision surgery because I am losing at the same rate as when I first got surgery, which will be a year ago in June. I don't want another surgery, as it was pure hell the days and weeks after surgery, for multiple reasons. I was told that I could go as low as 95 lbs, but I am already at 134 now, supposedly one will slow down weight-loss once they have reached 50% of weight-loss or something to that degree for the Duodenal Switch Loop. I am just curious as to if you wouldn't mind sharing what your weight-loss journey has been like if it has been more than 1 year and especially if it has been more than 2 years. Were there any concerns over losing too fast? If so, what helped without a revision surgery? I have to say at one point weight-loss was fast, I was able to slow it down after I was told that I would need revision surgery after the 1 year mark, mostly by food journaling. This COVID-19 ridiculousness got me off track again of losing slowly even though I went back to journaling. I hate to say this but with my own journey, Although I start off by listening, I find that some of what a nurse/Dr. says sometimes is crap, so I want to make sure that the talk of me needing revision surgery is not more, crAp. What have you done, Help! I know that it may seem like a ridiculous thing to be alarmed about but I really can’t handle another surgery so I would like to know if this has happened to anyone else and what worked for you besides revision surgery. Thanks!

    END OF MY ROPE

I'm sorry you had a rough recovery. I had a mini bypass March 16th and couldn't be happier. Have you discussed your concerns with your surgeon or dr? Weight loss surgery does change your internal body rhythm so you might need to adjust diet and speak with a dietician? Good luck xx

    Gatric Bypass or Sleeve?

Complications from gastric bypass are very rare, especially these days with more advanced techniques available to surgeons. I couldn't be happier with my decision to have a mini bypass.

    Difficulty finding a DS Surgeon

I agree - the two surgeons Postop listed are two of the best known in the country. DS isn't a very common surgery, so that's probably why you're having a hard time finding anyone. Also, I'm not sure how many insurance companies cover the DS. Mine did not - mine only covered sleeve and bypass. So that may be another reason..

    Gatric Bypass or Sleeve?

I'm really sorry this happened to you, but this kind of thing is extremely rare. People can have bad complications from the sleeve, too, but as with bypass, they are very rare. I've been involved in the bariatric community for several years and you almost never hear about this kind of thing. The vast majority of people who've had either kind of surgery have had either no complications at all or very minor ones that were an easy fix. P.S. You only joined this forum two hours ago? If you'd have been on here for several years, you'd know what you described almost never happens. I've been on this and another popular bariatric forum for about six years, and volunteer with bariatric patients at my clinic, and I can count the number of severe cases like this one on hand....

    Gatric Bypass or Sleeve?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do NOT have a Gastric Bypass surgery! My son had the sleeve done and had severe Acid Reflux and is now doing great! He looks awesome and feels awesome and no longer suffers as bad from GERD which also depends a lot on what your food choices are. I on the other hand had Gastric Bypass surgery and I no longer absorb any nutrients, I suffer horribly from Vitamin Deficiencies ~ AND Malabsorption, i have so much skin hanging off me, lost most of my teeth and hair and have osteoporosis, hypersomnia, ... diagnosis that I didn’t have previously to having this surgery. I can’t get any doctors to help me. I have been begging for vitamin infusions because I don’t absorb anything in pill or gummy forms. I feel like I’m loosing my fight at this point. The surgery was in 2006. I’m so tired, never have a drop of energy, I live in a recliner, I can’t go shopping or out anywhere because I have no energy ever. I’m literally dying because of that surgery. PLEASE don’t do it!

    I CAN'T FREAKING DECIDE!

Wow, thank you so, so much for replies! They were super helpful and I have actually made up my mind finally, woo hoo! I have decided to go with the bypass due to my bmi and due to issues with my metabolism being slow from my hypothyroidism, but mostly because I feel I can definitely meet my goal weight and stay at that weight successfully with this surgery. I am new on here, so I really appreciate the thoughts and insights!
  9. I have been struggling to stay on track recently. Some of my clothes are fitting better, but I could not "see" any difference. Photo below are 15 weeks apart. Starting weight 228, surgery weight 219 (Jan 8, 2020), current weight 189. Goal weight?. I had a revision to RNY in Jan 2020. Previously banded in August 2008. Lost 60 lbs, gained 30 before revision. I CAN'T FREAKING DECIDE!

I think they both work but it's really your mind that will f up later on when you decide to eat those cookies that you shouldn't have your mind is the trigger seriously! (btw you can't eat a lot w gastric bypass) I have 4 friends that had the gastric sleeve and only 1 has a healthy weight , the other 3 are probably bigger than when they started. My aunt had the gastric sleeve and she is eating a lot so she has gained a few lbs after a year. I only got the RNY cause I had acid reflux but I feel I made the right decision. It was a smooth transaction for me. Now one of my gastric sleeve friends wants to get a revision after seeing my results but I really think she needs counseling cause she is drinking a lot. She has addictive ways. Anyways lady...I would recommend watching videos. I followed a lot of people on YouTube and it helped so much preparing and seeing what they went through during each phase. Good luck!

    I CAN'T FREAKING DECIDE!

Hi! I will tell you my story. I’m 5’2” and Caucasian female. I was 50 when I went to my surgeon at 283 three and a half years ago. I was 256 4.5 month later when I had my VSG. I did amazing. I lost 112 lbs most of it in the first 7-8 months. I thought for sure I was home free I was really committed and excited. At my one year I was maintaining at my 2 year I was up 20 at my 3 year I was up 60 lbs. The thing about the sleeve is there is no malabsorption. Also you are able to eat whatever you want without repercussion as far as sickness. Sugar, fat whatever. Also after a while I was able to eat a decent quantity and of course there was the grazing. Six weeks ago I had my conversion at 232 I had a modified DS. I asked about a bypass. My surgeon said it wouldn’t result in a great weight loss. The DS is no joke. It’s early I know. I ate some frosting off a cake on Easter yesterday (my first cheat and not that much either) and I was up all night. I’m hoping that gets easier. Every one of these surgeries comes with good and bad and sometimes the good is bad and the bad is good. For instance I won’t be eating frosting again. I’m down over 30lbs in 6 weeks and I’m committed to keeping it off and staying on track and never letting myself gain weight back again. There’s no easy fix and there’s no one size fits all answer. Wish you the best!

    I CAN'T FREAKING DECIDE!

There are other things to take into consideration as well. With Bypass you can't EVER take NSAIDS. That was the reason I did the surgery I did. I have back issues and although tumeric is nice and all for inflammation I really want to be able to take my Naproxen (though admittedly, I can't take it until I'm 6 months out due to possible ulcer issue). So if you have an inflammatory condition and tumeric either isn't enough for you or you need something in addition to it then Bypass wouldn't be for you. Also, asprin is in a LOT of medicine and you'd have to pay close attention to labels. My surgeon was stressing this to everyone when discussing Bypass because some idiot took asprin and ended up in the hospital for three months and almost died due to a major bleed because they 'forgot'. If you don't have any problem with not taking NSAIDS for the rest of your life then I'd say go for the Bypass because it statistically has greater weight loss. But, in the end this is your life and YOU are the one who will have to live with the choice you make. So, my suggestion is follow your gut instinct, whatever that may be. And good luck!
  13. It has been almost 2 freaking weeks that my surgeon has been waiting on me to decide which surgery I want so that they can go ahead submit to insurance for approval. I can't decide between the bypass and the sleeve! I know all the pros and cons and side effects of both surgeries, but I have been on the fence for the whole process and thought I would know by now. I do not want to just go with the sleeve and fall back on the fact that you can get revision surgery later. I don't ever want a revision and I don't want to waste any more years being unhealthy and miserable. Here's my stats: 44 yo, Caucasian, female, 5'7, 290 lbs, bmi 45, and I have hypothyroidism. I do not have any issues with GERD. I just need to figure out which surgery I can achieve and maintain a healthy weight of around 135 lbs assuming I exercise and eat well. If anyone has stats similar to mine and had surgery, any info on your stats would be helpful. Any advice is appreciated!
  14. I'm thinking it is a blessing to be full so fast 😄 I had a mini bypass.
  15. I had a mini bypass March 16th. No acid reflux or bile reflux. I was prescribed 3 months of lansoprazole to protect my new stomach and reduce the risk of reflux which i was told is pretty common

    Bacon....

i'm just curious as to why no meats for breakfast? Did he say why? I wasn't told that for either SX... Not the band or the sleeve. I eat bacon in quench. and i eat less than half a piece on the weekends. #1... sleeved 8/28/19... i averaged 2lbs per week. This is a revision for me, SW was 173.5, today im holding at 129 which is where i have been for about a month. I found that sometimes i would go a week or so at the same and then BAM.... loss... 2-3lbs.. #2... i do eat bacon and sausage and i eat ham and cheese roll-up sometimes for lunch. #3.. i wouldn't call it cheating. I call it a blip... Everyone has "blips".... it's all about recognizing them and stopping them. But i can also tell you the people that are just starting out eating chips, ice cream, candy from the beginning are the same that in a few years that will be on here saying....... My WLS didn't work..... I've seen it a thousand times..... I've been here since 2009... Start off correct.... and if your dr. says no bacon... he must have a reason. I don't like cottage cheese either.. yuck... I know you said NO eggs (most everything has eggs) or bananas.... how about oatmeal? I avoid pancakes and waffles... as they are not really good for you. How about peanut butter? How about pears? i eat them a lot. i also eat mandarins from a cup or can... I sometimes eat with ricotta cheese. I eat regular yogurt... not fat free, not low fat as i just don't like them. I love the Liberte' brand.... you have to look hard for them as they are not in every store... we have them in Krogers where i live. They are the best i ever ate....
  17. I don't know about mini-GB, but that's not a common side effect of regular gastric bypass - constipation is much more common. I was also going to suggest SIBO - or maybe some kind of IBD (inflammatory bowel disease). I hope someone can change their mind and refer you to a specialist as he/she may be able to figure out what's going on. That must be miserable!

    Gatric Bypass or Sleeve?

I had GERD prior to surgery as well, so my surgeon recommended bypass (he said he'd do either, but strongly recommended that I consider bypass). So I did. I know not everyone gets GERD after sleeve (or if they have it beforehand, like I did, it doesn't ALWAYS get worse), but I didn't want to take the risk.

    Gatric Bypass or Sleeve?

I was leaning more towards the sleeve but my surgeon recommended a mini bypass. Same recovery time and better long term results. I'll admit i was very scared of the bypass but i had absolutely no pain, just discomfort from the gas. I had a minor bleed 1 day post op but it was fixed with compression bandages and a tranexamic acid iv. No regrets whatsoever.

    Gatric Bypass or Sleeve?

I had such bad Gerd after my sleeve that I ended up with a fistula (whole) in my stomach and was revised to the bypass. If you already have Gerd I would recommend the bypass. Good luck with your decision!

    Gatric Bypass or Sleeve?

I have GERD and I still got a VSG.I am about 4 months post op (I think) and I haven't had any issues but I am not very far post op. If I could go back, I would get the bypass because I have all these fears that I won't get to my ultimate goal weight (135). Another reason I would get RNY is because you are statistically more likely to lose more weight and keep it off. However, getting the VSG does not mean you can't lose a lot of weight. Some people have fantastic results with the VSG and genetics also plays a role.

    Gatric Bypass or Sleeve?

I had a slipped lap band that I had to have removed and a revision done. I also thought I wanted a sleeve but my surgeon strongly recommended a bypass because I already had terrible GERD before my lap band. I took his advice and have been very happy with the decision. It's your choice, but be well informed before you decide. Good luck!

    Gatric Bypass or Sleeve?

If you do the Sleeve you are going to run the risk of having to have a revision. I was approved for my surgery despite having acid issues because I DON'T have GERD, but rather something called EOS. I was going to have issues with acid whether I had Bypass or DS (which involves a sleeved stomach). My disorder is an allergy disorder and the acid is worse 1. when I either eat or am around what I'm allergic to, 2. at night, or 3. if I eat something acidic. I only take my acid reducers at night. However, I wouldn't necessarily recommend the Sleeve to someone who has GERD. Trust me, weight loss surgery is no joke and it's a bumpy recovery in the beginning. The gas, the liquid diet, the puree stage, etc. Having to go through the 2 week pre-diet all over again if it doesn't stick the first time... You have to look at everything and then ask yourself if you are willing to take the risk of having to do it all over again if your GERD gets WORSE. In the end, the choice is yours, whatever that choice may be because it's your life and YOU are the one living it, not someone else... I wish you the best of luck on whatever choice you make!

    Gatric Bypass or Sleeve?

Has your surgeon given a recommendation based on the GERD? There are some people who need a revision to a bypass due to acid reflux, and a number of people have a bypass as an initial surgery due to them having a lot of reflux/GERD. I don't know that it gets worse for everyone after a sleeve but it would be interesting to see the percentage who have a revision to bypass due to GERD but had it prior to their sleeve. I have a sleeve, it is early days yet for me and I am still on an acid reducer which I will be finishing later this week, but so far so good. Before my surgery I hadn't had acid reflux in over 18 months or so, based on that my surgeon was happy to recommend a sleeve, had the reflux been current he would have wanted to do a bypass.
  25. I am pretty sure I want the sleeve, but my friend has got me thinking about gastric bypass because I have GERD and it can get worse with the sleeve (or so I am told). Can you all share your experience whether it be the sleeve or bypass? I would like to know the good, bad and ugly about both procedures, so I can try and make an informed decision. Thank you.
