  1. I know that's an issue for the DS (where much more of the small intestine is bypassed). I've never read that about the RNY - and the diarrhea/foul smell isn't all that common with us. Constipation is much more common. Only a few inches of the intestine are bypassed in the RNY. It's more of a gastric (stomach) bypass than an intestinal bypass.
  2. I don't think that's very common with the bypass. It is with the DS, though.
  3. I had read that somewhere about the bypass, so the food isn't being fully digested and it creates more gas
  4. I had GERD prior to surgery, which is why I went with bypass. It completely went away for 2-3 years. It did eventually start up again, but it's a much milder case than it was pre-surgery. Basically, bypass often (but not always) greatly improves if not outright cures GERD. Note the word "often". It doesn't always, but usually, yes, it does (and I do know many people for whom it went away permanently). not all RNY'ers dump. The statistic that seems to be thrown around a lot is that 30% of us do, but I have no idea if there's any hardcore medical research behind that number. But just based on what I've picked up just hanging around bariatric forums for the last six years, that sounds about right. I've never dumped and I know a lot of other RNY'ers who don't. If you're one of the ones who do, you can control that through diet by limiting or avoiding sugar and fatty things (which we all should be doing ANYWAY). re: loose skin. I have worked with pre-op groups in my bariatric clinic for the last three years. Loose skin (and hair loss) has got to be the number 1 worry of most of them. I, too, worried about those things incessantly when I was a pre-op and early post-op. I would be willing to bet the farm that the vast majority of us who are out a ways wonder why we wasted even one brain cell worrying about this. I would take loose skin any day over weighing almost 400 lbs again. ANY DAY! I have since had mine removed because I got tired of looking at it, and I got tired of hearing it slap up against my body when I exercised, but it was very easy to hide in clothes and I'm pretty sure no one knew it was there besides my husband. Here is a picture of me before I had skin surgery. Notice the loose skin? And I had a lot of it since I lost over 200 lbs.
  5. You're going to have loose skin issues, no way around it if you're planning on loosing the amount of weight you want. I've already lost over a hundred pounds and have another 88 to go reach my goal and can only imagine the sheer amount of loose skin I will have. But, it's still worth it! My insurance covers skin removal after a year of maintenance so I'm not stressing about it. It's annoying, yeah, but trust me you'll be so much healthier after loosing the weight! The two areas that bug me most are my upper arms, and the loose skin on my chest area a bit under my armpits (where your bra rests). I had a co-worker of mine suggest shapers as she had gastric bypass and she said it helps a bit with the loose skin issue and said it even reduced hers over time. She said the body suits with hooks in the front are best as they fit tighter and that's what you need. I figure I'll look into that eventually, but I've yet to do so...
  6. Hi all~ As you can tell I'm super new. I've just started the process for bypass surgery (I picked a spectacular time, huh?). I've been reading this site up and down, but it's a bit difficult sorting through stories and advice from people who have had different surgeries than bypass. What's some things you wish you knew about post surgery and life after? If you didn't have the insurance mandated wait period, how long was it from first appointment to surgery date (if it makes a difference, I'm going through Beth Israel in Boston) And for those who suffered from GERD prior - did the surgery actually help? I've seen a lot of the things about dumping syndrome and problems with lack of nutrients, but would you do it again if you could? One of my biggest concerns is loose skin due to rapid weight loss - has that been a big issue for anyone here? Thank you all!
  7. Well done. I'm almost 5wks (16th March) post op from a mini bypass and barely losing weight. It's so depressing and I'm struggling bad I've lost 19lbs since surgery and 129lbs total since January 2019. started January 2019 at 400lbs, 290 at surgery and 271 today.
  8. Well I hope everyone is surviving through this virus situation. i felt like updating everybody I'm pretty much 6 months post op give or take a few days! This has been an incredible journey to say the least. Had the RNY BYPASS surgery and I believe it completely changed my metabolism; I've lost so much weight and it's like I can't gain weight. i actually started my own pre-op diet roughly 8 months ago way before surgery and my highest weight was 322lbs. I was weighed in for surgery day at 257lbs. Over the past few weeks I've pretty much hit maintenance I believe and I'm weighing in between my lowest day of 168 and my normal days of 170/171 obviously weight can fluctuate from day to day. I am gobsmacked how well I've done and how good I look but I know I really need to start to tone up and build muscle. My main focus from Day 1 was to just shed the weight off lose the LBS and I've done that. Never thought I'd get this far. In the past few weeks I've really tested my metabolism over Easter I had some chocolate and some crisps and a few alcoholic beverages but it appears not to make much difference at all to my weight but obviously I'm back on track still logging my food intake most days and some days still using protein shakes when I'm busy or not that hungry literally 6 months post op some days I'm still not hungry..... So in summary I've lost max 154lbs since day 1; 8 months ago and in the 6 months since surgery day I've lost 87-88lbs and I'm feeling great and it's weird people now telling me I've got to stop losing weight LoL. I'm finally the slimmest one in my group of friends. People treat me differently in general. I've included a photo it's not the best angle as it's hard to take photos of myself but you get the general idea considering the amount of weight I've lost there's not a huge amount of excess skin the main area is my lower belly abdominal area!!! I really truly believe my metabolism and the way my body processes food has completely changed and it's an amazing feeling!! MIKEY xxx Feeling great 35 years young
  9. Yes, I am still overweight and I am in my range but the way that it has been explained is that I have hit this point too soon and should not be losing weight at this fast of a pace. I journaled on my own after my Dr. told me that I would most likely need revision surgery. All of my blood work, which is done every 3 months, always comes back great. I kept a food journal on my own and I was able to slow it down to a loss of 2-5 pounds per month. I was blessed enough that insurance paid for my surgery.
  10. I wish I knew how frustrating the stalls were gonna be. Hadn't made me regret a single thing, but they are soooo frustrating! I wish I knew that people aren't going to mention that you look like you are losing weight. I'm down 50 pounds, and have only had TWO people say anything. Again, no regrets, but a little feedback for your hard work helps! My ONLY regret is that I wish I hadn't mucked around so long with my lap band before I decided to revise to RNY!
  11. Did you have a sleeve or a bypass?
  12. Sabs211

    I CAN'T FREAKING DECIDE!

I was going to go for the sleeve but my surgeon recommended the mini bypass. Same recovery time as the sleeve but better long term results. I am 4wks out, started at 290 at 5'3. I'm 271 today i also have hypothyroidism. But at the end of the day, it's upto you. Does your surgeon have a preference?
  13. Has anyone been diagnosed hypothyroidism and had a gastric bypass? I'm 4wks post op and been so tired and lost a lot less weight than expected. Typical hypothyroidism symptoms. I can't get my blood test done for a while due to COVID-19. Just wondered if one of the internal changes after surgery were thyroid hormone production? Thanks
  14. My biggest thing was not eating bread, rice or pasta and was able to do really well and lose a lot of weight. As soon as I started eating those types of foods, I felt an increase in appetite and started noticing the weight going back up plus Now the craving is back too. I guess my advice is if you can keep away from the bad cravings do so because once you start letting yourself have some here and there it’s harder to distance yourself from it again. I’m sure some people won’t agree with what I’m saying about not eating bread, pasta and rice, but I experienced it myself first hand and had a very successful gastric bypass patient tell me the same before I got my surgery. Hope that helps! :)
  15. Hey everyone! I’m new here, but have come to this site because I’m getting scared and am trying to find some help. I had a gastric bypass over 2 years ago going on 3 and had been doing really well with keeping my weight off. Then I became pregnant and had my beautiful baby boy this December, but I just cannot seem to lose my baby weight. Has anyone else had this issue? Is the pouch reset something to consider and does it really work? Any thoughts on how I can start gaining control back of my gastric bypass and lose this weight? Thanks! 🤗
  16. Leslie... I am considering a sleeve revision with the same dr. How did it go?
  17. I'm not sure what to make of this. Some of it could be due to a stricture, which the gastroscopy will find - and that's an easy fix (I had to do it twice - at 4 weeks out and again at 8 weeks out). I'm not sure about the rest of it. You're right in that what you're going through (other than stricture-related stuff, which happens to about 5% of bypass patients) is pretty rare - but I'm so sorry you're going through that! EDITED to add: you know, I just re-read this. I suppose this COULD all be related to a stricture - the extreme exhaustion could be due to the fact you're unable to take in very many calories (due to the stricture - if in fact that's what it is). A lot of this other stuff is similar to what I experienced when I had strictures. Please keep us updated - I'm curious to see what they think is going on.

    Bostonians, are you there?

So nice to hear from a fellow Dr. Gee patient. I liked her, but I really think my operation was a bust! I was done (a sleeve) on February 26 and am only down 13 pounds. I think I could eat almost any reasonable amount. I don't feel full. Very disappointed! I'm happy for you, though. Did you have a bypass or sleeve? Grace
  19. I'm 4wks out of a mini bypass. I've noticed I'm having trouble sleeping or staying asleep. I wake up about every 2-3hrs it's not pain related, as I'm pretty much healed now. I'm just very restless. anyone else had the same thing?

    Revision - 4 Weeks In

Hey! I had my Sleeve to RNY revision on March 4 of this year! Started around 209 and am now at 182. It has gotten slow since April 3... -2 lbs in 12 days! And I was not really eating much, so we will see. I had so many issues after my sleeve, in addition to regaining. We had this done almost at the same time, so go us!!! I hope we do well!
  21. Hey where are you located? I’m still scheduled to undergo gastric bypass on April 27th, but I’m in TN where things haven’t gotten really bad yet. Congratulations on your surgery, I’m so anxious and worried about being postponed, especially after starting the dreaded liver shrink diet.
  22. I'm not quite 3 months out of my surgery which is the Loop Duodenal Switch, same as you, but a potential revision is something I was worried about when I agreed to this surgery because I only know two people who got this surgery and BOTH needed revisions. 1. because he got a really bad malnutrition issue so they had to fix him back so it was essentially just the sleeve now (though his was, admittedly the DS not the Loop) and 2. because she went from being over 400 pounds to being 95 pounds in two years! She's 5'5. After her revision she's at a much healthier 123 now. She had originally had the Loop. I, like yourself, very much do not want to go through a revision, but I figure if it happens then they'd just be fixing my intestines so the whole 'phases' wouldn't be necessary. I mean yeah, you'd have to eat lighter meals for a while, but they wouldn't be messing with your stomach for the revision so it's why I still went with the Loop. I won't like it if I have to eventually have a revision, but both of theirs happened in the second year so I'm not going to stress until then. Likely your weight loss will slow down eventually. You just still have some more to lose. For your height you could technically get down to 92 pounds and still be considered in the normal range. And if you don't like what the doctor says... get a second opinion. Especially if it's a surgery you don't want!
  23. While I didn't have revision. I did have my sleeve and esophagus repaired. My doctor believes as I slowly lose more weight? My reflux will decrease. It was working until the lockdown. I just need to move more! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. I'm excited to be so close to my goal weight. I had my surgery done in Mexico back on October 16th 2019 with Pompeii Surgical. I also follow their patients support group and wanted to update on here for those looking to get the gastric bypass! My Stats: Starting weight- 256lbs at 5'9" and 48inch waist.Ring size 12 then , shoe size 11.5 also. Now I'm- 167lbs at 5'8" and a 30 inch waist. Ring size 9 now, shoe size 9 also. Zero complications from surgery! I'm loving my new me! Goal weight is under 150lbs ! I'm also training to join my local Sheriffs Office to become a deputy ! Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  25. the above poster is right - 95 lbs is a healthy weight for someone 4'11" tall. Maybe I'm missing something here ??? Also, why are they talking about doing revision surgery? You mean reverse the duodenal switch? I was a slow loser from the get-go, so I can't relate to losing super fast, but the last 20 lbs or so were a bear to get off. My weight loss slowed to a crawl (we're talking like 2 lbs a month). I also gained 10 lbs after hitting my lowest weight, which I really needed to do, and I stabilized there for two years (I've since gained 10 more lbs with I did NOT want to do, but we're working on it...)
