reversal from lapband to gastic sleeve
Travelher replied to dlwil39's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
lots of people revise to the sleeve. I'd caution you though, that if you have any reflux with the band (as many do) your best revision option will be bypass. -
anyone REGRET the sleeve?
marfar7 replied to elpasovet's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did the same thing in 2009 with the lapband. I'd read a few things on the internet, made an appt with a dr and within 2 weeks I had completed my nutritionist and psych appts and was in surgery. Had no idea what I was getting myself into. Not sure why my insurance didn't require at least a time of consideration, but they moved quickly. While I loved my band - until I didn't and I lost most of my excess weight with it, it finally ahd enuf of my destruction to it. I couldn't figure out how to eat slowly, making me vomit frequently. Causing a slip. When I was facing a revision, I did alot of research on the RNY and the sleeve. I had gained 30 lbs in the year my band was unfilled after the slip so all I had to lose was 40 lbs (bmi was 28 at 174 lbs). I felt the RNY was a bit drastic for my purposes. But I knew if I just had the band removed without a revision, I would be back up to 250 soon. So while I did virtually NO research on my first wls, I did tons of research for my sleeve. WHile I'm 13 months out I still have 15 lbs to goal. It's going very slowly now, very slowly. The first 100 lbs is easy peasy compared with the last 15. But do I regret surgery? Never. Not the lapband or the sleeve. Comparing the 2 would be another whole post so I won't bore anyone with those details. Do ur research tho. U can't back pedal afterwards... Good luck! -

I had gastric sleeve, not bypass. I was a revision from a lapband (implanted in 2001, removed 2011; sleeve in 2011). My nutritionalist told me that there was strong evidence that people who take probiotics lose weight better and encouraged me to take them after my revision to sleeve. i bought them, but was so burned out on "pills" from the Vitamins that i never did. I lost 150# in 14 months and have been maintaining that loss for 3 years - so made it to a normal/goal weight without them. I recently had another kind of surgery, had a complication and then an infection. I required Iv antibiotics plus was on a total of 3 different types of oral antibiotics. I was pretty sick actually. As i was wrapping up the antibiotics course, i decided to take probiotics as a preventive measure against yeast overgrowth or other imbalances. i feel fine, I feel no different. So, my personal experience neither supports nor contradicts the benefits of probiotics. I had borerline blood sugar - always in the 90s preop. It dropped to low normal levels quite quickly. Most of my blood work was otherwise pretty good - but i have read stories on these forums of very quick improvement of health conditions, faster than you might expect if it were just due to weight loss. I had borderline high blood pressure too, but that has always been more controlled by exercise vs my weight - not sure why. -
Gastric Sleeve after failed Lap Band?
Matt Z replied to Aznavour's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am a Band to Bypass revision. My Surgeon advised against Band to Sleeve due to the increased potential for staple line issues due to the scaring caused by the band. There were others surgeons in her office that would do it, but she won't do them. I trusted her inputs and went with the bypass. And yes, logically you will lose weight at a slower pace, simply because you are already used to the restriction. Now, that's not to say it's not going to be amazing or "slow" by any means. But you have the potential to not lose as quickly. Going from no restriction and no malabsorption to both is clearly going to be more of an impact than going from some restriction and just adding malabsorption. But, either way, it's still worth it. My band was not causing issues, but it took them WAY longer to get it out than it should have because it was totally encapsulated in scar tissue. Now, revision to sleeve, you are not going to get any of the malabsorption, just a different type of restriction. From what I read when I was researching Band to Sleeve, it can be rather slow. Whatever you chose, Good Luck! -
How do you balance your social life?
Successful4me replied to Shea_Shea's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Just order the appetizers. They come in smaller portions & better then ordering a BIG meal. People snack on appetizers so this will allow you to pick & in between conversation you can enjoy yourself as well. This is what I do. I've been banded since 12/22/10 with revision of a new band on 2/11/14. 109.2 lbs gone. Loving Me some Me -
and some of us come back because we need revisions!

Pre surgery- planned bypass now thinking sleeve
GreenTealael replied to 2Bsmaller18's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The sleeve will mean risking worse reflux that can turn into a more serious condition, then you will have to revise to a bypass anyway. SKIP THE EXTRA STEPS. I suggest you speak with your team again but stick with the original plan -
Pre surgery- planned bypass now thinking sleeve
catwoman7 replied to 2Bsmaller18's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had GERD and went with the bypass because of it. It really doesn't have many more side effects than the sleeve does, and malnutrition isn't an issue as long as you keep on top of your supplements (you have to take some supplements with the sleeve as well). I would not recommend getting the sleeve if you already have GERD. I've seen too many people have to revise to bypass because of it. Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones, but I'm not sure I'd want to risk it. -
Two questions.......Being sleeves after Lapland.....Opinions on driving to soon
Strivingforbetter replied to aapb79Gmail.com's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was revised from the lapband to the duodenal switch a year ago. I think driving three days after surgery is a little too soon. I would wait at least a week. You might still be on painkillers and still feel rather sore. -
Hello, I am in your same boat x2 I originally had band place in 2005. Then revised in 2014, however it failed me again. Converted to sleeve on 02/18/2019. Hope it goes well for both of us post lap banders.

Previous Bander... getting VSG soon... Please talk to me..
liannatx replied to Tracytma's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a revision from LapBand. I am very pleased with this little stomach. I am losing slowly, but it is so much better than how I lived with the Band. I was throwing up daily even with my band empty... It had slipped and developed so much scar tissue that removal was the only option. I am losing 1-2 lbs per week, so I am not losing rapidly like some people do but it is pretty steady and I have no doubts that I will make it back down to a healthy weight. I have no regrets. -
Worried stomach is to BIG
educationrulz replied to nursechick78's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Tabitha, I think that the positive aspect of all of this is that it sounds like you don't have a leak or anything like that. Your body is tolerating food, which should be a good thing. I know I would feel exactly like you if I were in your position so I don't mean to sound righteous or anything. I guess I'm saying that if you have to try to find something positive in this situation, a revision to make your stomach smaller wouldn't be the worst thing you could have to deal with. But, I hope for your sake it's not anything that requires surgery. I do remember reading a post about someone who had developed a little pouch off to the side of her sleeve that was holding extra food. I believe she was having some other symptoms though. She did have to have a revision surgery. Can anyone remember where that post was so that Tabitha could PM that poster to compare notes? -
Hi there! I am scheduled for Revision from lap band to gastric bypass on Dec. 12th. I am sooo nervous! I'm self paying so I'm going to Mexico, alone, for the surgery. Can anyone give me some information on how you are doing after your revision, like the recovery period and how much you have lost. I'm really nervous because I was a complete failure with the lap band and I don't want another failed surgery.

Pregnancy after gastric sleeve?
kekerene replied to italianlady13's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi italianlady13, I am not a seasoned sleever yet but I am a seasoned bander, LOL. I am having a revision from a band to sleeve on 06/23/11. The more I am reading it seems as though I am one of the MANY people having a revision from band to sleeve. I know there have been many people who have been successful with the band but from my experience I do regret it. I did initially lose 60 lbs. with the band but that was only because I could not keep any food down and I pretty much lived off of Soup. When they would loosen the band then there was no restriction at all. I guess they never really found that happy in-between. I have been having the band since 2006 and in 2010 I got pregnant. My doctor loosened the band just a little but I gained a whopping 80lbs for ny pregnancy. My baby is now 7 months old and of the 80 lbs I gained for the pregnancy I have been able to lose 20lbs. This puts me right back where I was before I got Lap Band. I went to have an upper GI X-Ray done 2 weeks ago and find out that my band has partially slipped and it can slip completely at any time which if that were to happen it would be an emergency surgery. So now I am scheduled to have this band out and a revision to the sleeve. I always thought that somewhere maybe 25-30 years down the road the band would have to come out, I just never thought that it would be 5 years later. I will be more than happy to have this band out and to hopefully be able to eat a small amount of food and be full without throwing up every single meal. Anyhow, I am sure that you will choose the best choice for you and again everyone is different. I just wanted to share my story with you. Best of luck to you! -
I had surgery on the 9th. I had requested the hotel with my friend. I had a revision, they sent her to the hotel and me to the recovery house. It was OK but my friend did not see me for 2 days and she was beginning to wonder. I swapped to the hotel after one night in the recovery house. My surgery was a 11 PM Mexican time, they took her to the hotel at 9:00 a couple of hours before I had surgery. that was fine but they sent all my clothes, toothbrush, comfy clothes, all of it with my friend. I had no idea what room my friend was in so...we were glad to see each other. I am glad I got to stay at the recovery house for a little while. I loved the hotel and I was comfortable by then. Communication is not great so you just have to be flexible and have a since of humor. You can easily walk to shopping from the hotel. Stay on the main roads, don't so side streets and know they drive very crazy!!!

Just out of curiosity why does bypass scare the crap out of you? I was going to have the sleeve and then because of reflux we decided the better surgery for me was bypass. I was scared to death to because all of the horror stories. I spent some time with both my bariatric team, my gastroenterologist as well as many bypass patients. I was most afraid of the malabsorption component. I then learned very quickly that it actually helps you to lose weight and honestly both bypass and sleeve patients have to have blood work and take Vitamins for life. The biggest thing they warned me about was not going in for yearly nutritional panels and skipping vitamins. As long as you do that which you also have to do with the sleeve as well, you should be good. I am two years post op, have lost all my weight and comorbitities, am very healthy and thank god every day that i went bypass as i have not even had a simple case of heartburn since the day i woke up from surgery. Spend some time and really research so you make the best choice for your health. I have seen way too many sleeve patients then have to revise to bypass anyway. I decided i was only going through this one time in my life. Both surgeries are equally as aggressive. The sleeve removes 90% of your stomach, the bypass reroutes. Just my two cents....take it for what it is worth but don't be afraid, be educated about your choices.

Confessions of a Pre Op Shopaholic
JPeters415 replied to Mellie May's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Love these ideas! Especially the popsicle maker. Besides lots of protein drink mixes and vitamins, I bought a chicken...yep a chicken... to make my own broth to freeze. Got some small serving size containers for freezing my broth. Figure I'll eat the chicken pre-surgery and the broth post op. Real chicken broth tastes SO much better than the canned stuff. I'm a revision (plication to bypass) so I learned a few little survival tips from my first surgery a few years ago. I also bought baby (toddler) eating utensils to help me to keep bites small when I get to soft/ solid foods. Sounds silly, but it helps. Also got some slippers for the hospital, since I hear they will be making me walk the halls. Funny the topic of shopping is posted... can never be too prepared! And new stuff makes the journey that much more fun! -
About 2 mths ago, my lapband herniated. They totally unfilled me and told me it needed to come out. I saw my band dr who agreed. however, since I cancelled my Part B Medicare 2 yrs ago (cuz never once in 12 yrs did I ever use it and it was costing $110 mth), I'd have to pay $5400 for the drs charges. My reflux is out of control and I have stomach pain often. Wondered how I was gunna come up with the money to do it. We've been in Ca for 2 weeks now, on vacation from Or. We're staying with my in laws right now. They offered to give it to me! They are the greatest! Now I can get my sleeve revision before my stomach is too damaged to do anything but take out my band. Thats my problem. I could wait for a year for my Medicare Part B to take effect again, but the damage to my stomach in that amount of time may be a hinderance in doing a sleeve. I'm so relieved. We'd have a hard time saving over $5,000 any time soon. A prayer has been answered! When we get home on July 2, I will schedule the surgery. Sleeve, here I come!

I had the sleeve in Sept 2014....I was a lower BMI'er when I started but I have lost hardly no weight, even gained 5 pounds....I'm hungry all the time and I have zero restriction(I know I need to have some willpower, but I don't have willpower and that was the main reason I wanted this tool to help me).....I take in plenty of Protein and I'm exercising.....Met with my Dr. two weeks ago....she said we'll give it six months and then talk about revision.......I have diabetes and that was my main reason for having the surgery in the first place.....I was scared to have the bypass.....I guess I should have sucked it up and went for it!

July 2005 bandsters check in here....
duyesaka replied to piercedqt78's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am back at 1 1/2 yrs out.Banded Nov 05, hope I count...lost 45lbs, had major back surgery in January so 6 months of no or little exercise. Thank goodnes for the band. I had a weird problem. I think I need to have a little taken out of the band but I am scared. If I eat three hours before bed and it is not practically liquid, I wake up choking. I try real hard not to do that.I am now really aware of what I am eating, definatly protein. I cannot eat in the early morn so I have a warm protein drink, the warmth seems to open the band. If I have some removed I am worried that I will be able to get too much in. I finally got filled to what I felt was the right amount. I just hate choking and figure it is really a must to pay attention and not eat meat that is not ground, or anything too heavy at dinner. I have stayed at this weight, otherwise without the band and a surgery( had 7 knee replacement revision in 5 years) why I gained so much, I would surely have gained again. I have not read of anyone being maybe overfilled and choking and or coughing during the night..... Anyone hear??? Info would be great. Debra -
Revised 4/14...have a heaviness in my belly
pooky032281 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I went through band to sleeve revision on Tuesday. Now I have this heavy feeling dead center of my chest. It's not painful, doesn't interfere with breathing...just annoying. Have any of you experienced this? -
I'm scheduled for my VSG in September and have only come out and told one co-worker who is actually very supportive and was sleeved years ago. The others (inluding one who is having a band to VSG revision in Oct) have pretty much guessed that I am either deep in the contemplation phase or am scheduled and they are being a bit catty, saying amongst themselves "She won't be able to do it, she eats all the time", ""She thinks it will be easy but it isn't", "She's going to Mexico because she doesn't really need the surgery" and the like. I know, blow it off and chalk it up to people just being catty -- which is what I plan to do. But, why does it seem that weight loss surgery is a topic people can be just so darn vicious about? I've heard more stories about cattiness in regard to WLS than breast augmentation!
