Sandy, You've answered your own question. You can't do it without the band because you get tired of being hungry...and that's what the band is supposed to take care of. Cleo is right. It doesn't work for some people but they don't know what percentage are failed by the band (like Cleo) and what percentage fail the band. All you can do is go into this with the hope that you will be the one the band works for. I've struggled for the better part of a year with my band but I did finally find that sweet spot. Some people have a shorter learning curve and are successful from the day of surgery. I wasn't one of them. I ended up being overfilled, then completely unfilled and was actually on the verge of a revision to a vertical sleeve. The only point I'm trying to make is that I never gave up and I actively worked at making this band work for me. Now, not only do I not have hunger for about 4 hours after a meal but I've even lost the desire to eat. I eat my 3 oz of Protein and 1/2-1 cup of vegies and I'm content until my next meal. *That* is what the band does for me. It gets rid of that all consuming, constant hunger that I've lived with for most of my life which means I have a much better chance at controlling the eating. .

Hi all! So I had the sleeve done in Nov 2015 and due to GERD and some weight regain, I am having my revision to Bypass in 2 weeks. I've started my pre-op diet and was wondering for anyone who was sleeved then revised to bypass..is there anything I should know before surgery? I want to hear any experiences, success stories, regrets, etc? Thanks! [emoji5] Sent from my moto e5 play using BariatricPal mobile app

I had a gastric bypass in 2007. I had a revision 9 days ago. I was supposed to start regular liquids 2 days ago for the next week then advance to softs for 4 weeks. Tonight I had to attend a memorial service for a friend and out of depression/bad habits I ate some chips and salsa and a bite of a quesadilla at dinner when everyone gathered. I threw up twice before leaving the restaurant, once on the way home, and twice when I got here. I know the seriousness of what I've done, but at the time I really wasn't thinking. I have no doubt that everything I ate has come up by now but my stomach is still severely hurting...like a cramping in the bowel area. It almost feels like needing to poop and you're trying to hold it in. I have eliminated that as a cause of the pain already. I'm thinking I might have seriously hurt something. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Should I be concerned enough to contact the doctor? I just want the hurting to stop.

zero weight loss
Proud2BMe replied to AmberWarstler's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Check your carbs. While you are in the weight loss phase there is really no reason to eat carbs at all as they can stall your progress. As others have pointed out, get your sleeve checked to see if you may need a revision. If not enough stomach was removed then you will lose less than other people as you won't have the same restriction level. Finally, make sure you are eating enough calories. If you eat too few calories your body will go into starvation mode and will cling desperately to every calorie you have stored. -
How much Protein did your doctor tell you to get in a day? I was a cash pay revision from a band to the sleeve, I missed a lot of the education about the sleeve. My initial education was for a RnY, but I was change to a band a week before surgery due to a change in health. I know each WLS has is own requirements.

I was Doing Great Until...

BarryW, Christinamo7, 2GoldenGirl, all your reccomendations and suggestions are much appreciated. The complications from the hip revision surgery have left my range of mobility diminishing rather than improving and advancing. Thank you for the information, I will discuss this matter further with my Physical Therapist and my Doctor. As far as the protein mentioned by 2Goldengirl, I have a whey liquid protein(42g) in the am and my whey protein shake at night. The Optimum Nutrition Salted Caramel flavor is my favorite and it acts as a "sweet treat" at night. May I congratulate all of you are your weight losses! -
I paid cash for my lapband many many years ago, and I only had to take a blood test. I just had the sleeve revision 6 wks ago, and had insurance but I'm going to guess that they would require much more than blood tests since it's a major surgery. Maybe you can call and ask different bariatric centers to get a better answer.

I've had a roller coaster ride with this fill. After my port revision surgery this past July, my doctor is only able to fill my port in the office without fluoro about every other time. This past time, he overfilled me in the office so I could barely get liquids down, then got unfilled under xray because he couldn't find the port, only to be left with no restriction! I realize that the scar tissue is preventing him from finding the port, but I would like to find a doctor in Maryland that does fills under xray in their office. I am self-pay and I am paying about $400 to get fills in the hospital since my doctor, Dr. Averbach, does't have one in his office. I don't blame the doctor for these problems, but I do want my band to work and I am hopeful that I can find a doctor who can help me to find my sweet spot!

I had gastric bypass 12 yrs ago and I'm looking for more restriction as I have gained some weight back. Not many surgeons do revisions like this, but Dr. Acevedos in Mexicali, MX can perform the band over bypass surgery. Has anyone has this done and if so, are you happy with the results? Good luck to all new bandsters... hope to get on the bandwagon with y'all soon! Michele

Port through skin
mominkansas replied to Crystalc2002's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can feel my port but not quite see it right now. I had a band revision a few weeks ago and was told not to move it but was given the option free of charge since I was being opened up. I decided to skip it. I am terrified of a port infection and had to have my flipped port reanchored a few months after my surgery. If it bothers you I would look into it otherwise as my doc said there is no telling how the port will look in the new place. -
Losing TOO much weight!
ElfiePoo replied to JAMILLAH E's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
100 pounds in about 3 months?? That sounds more typical of bypass...or even the sleeve. In answer to your question....*YOU* decide. Don't leave that up to your doctor. Some doctors will try to tell you that you need to weigh what the insurance charts say and, even though they've revised them, their weights are still unrealistic and don't take into account muscle mass or other things that are unique to each individual. I plan on going on maintenance when I get to the point where I'm happy...which may still be higher than a doctor would like. We'll see. I'm just hoping that I won't do the reverse and keep trying to lose beyond where I look healthy. Not a big fear of mine at this point. . -
I know right! That was my theory also. I really thought that I should be doing more. I'm not a revision patient.

Had my one month post op revision check-up today...
sherrypep posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my band for 16 1/2 months and lost about 45 pounds. Had my revsion on May 6th and at my apt. today went from 164.5 to 148.5. Don't think I have been in the 140's since I got pregnant with my now 15 year old. I feel amazing and had no complications, a very easy recovery, and I am eating with very little problems. I am so happy I decided to revise. -
An 40 pounds from my weigh goal and had my band removed. What is success rate with lower weight loss?

Pastafarians UNITE!!! Worship his noodly appendage!
Wheetsin replied to Sunta's topic in Rants & Raves
How the farkin frip did I miss this thread? I have proof... The Flying: This part of the Flying Spaghetti Monster gives it flight, allowing it to span infinite distances in infinitesimal spans of time. This part is irreducibly complex, hyper-real (see Weird Calculus), and cannot be broken down into components. Doing so – if it were even possible, and it isn't – would incur the wrath of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. It is proven by this series of math-like squiggles. (The original formula revealed to Pastafarian scholars did not include the butter and toast element, which is necessary to relate kittens to antigravity. The Flying Spaghetti Monster inspired this revision one day He skipped Breakfast.) -
Having concerns???
Christina.Rose replied to Marlana Dalessandro's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, the hiatal hernia is bcause the weight of the stomach area stretched the muscle that is around your esophagus near where it meets with the stomach. Imagine a hose attached to a balloon going through an uncooked bagel....stay with me here....if you pull the hose, the balloon is supposed to stop....if you have a hiatal hernia, the bagel is stretched so part of the balloon (stomach) pokes up through it. Now considering that the sleeve shapes your stomach like a banana, if that opening is stretched then a lot more stomach can shift up through there. Its not really age its more size and wether or not your "bagel" is stretched open or not. I hope I didn't sound too insane. Btw, I had a hiatal hernia repair on the same day as my sleeve and I hardly ever had pain or discomfort. Im 2 weeks+ out from a revision from the lapband to sleeve. As far as other hernias go, there's multiple reasons for them but age still doesn't save you. I was 21, in shape in the Army and got a hernia in my lower abdomen. Just happens. -
New to Site, trying to decide between sleeve and band?
klus263 replied to ljdewitt123's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
When I started my journey, I was going to have the band. But with my first visit with the surgeon, he suggested the sleeve and my insurance had just recently approved coverage for it. I came home and did my research. After weighing the risk and complications of both surgery and discussing with my husband-I chose the sleeve. I am so grateful for making that decision. I have no limitations on food except for what I chose. I am following my diet closely and have lost 56 pounds so far and I have only been sleeved for 3 months. I have never vomited, regurtitated, slimed my food. I don't have to make appointments for fills/worry about slippage/rejection/breakage. Some people are very succesful with the band-but I have only seen one-everyone else I know has had complications and had revisions to the sleeve. I know you will need to make your own decision and good luck but I do not regret having the sleeve instead of the band. -
Lapband Vs Sleeve
*susan* replied to LookatmeNow34's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think before we are really able to offer any reasonable input on this, we need more information from you. Are you having problems with the band, difficulty reaching your sweet spot, issues with not being able to eat anything or keep food down, or is it simply, as others have said, you are not following proper protocol for a bandster? If it is a case of you are not losing because you are not following a sensible diet, then no, the sleeve is not the answer to your problems. However, if you are having actual band related issues, then yes, it might be worth looking into revision surgery. -
Has anyone had a revision from sleeve to rny? How long was the procedure? How has the process been so far? I didn't see a board for this, just from band to rny. TIA!

My revision from lap band to bypass is on dec 10th. My question is what else did you drink during this stage besides the generic guidelines provided. (eg; water, broth, jello, diluted juices, powedered drinks, etc.)

Hey All... I'm Jacee and this is my story. I am 23, female and living in Australia. In 2008 I underwent Lapband surgery and went from (127kgs) 275lbs to (70kgs) 150lbs. I was initially very successful and I loved my band. In early 2010 I started suffering for undiagnosed gallstones, which meant that in turn my Lapband had to be loosened from unrelentless vomiting. My gallbladder was removed in December 2010 and by then I'd gained back (20kgs) 45lbs. In early 2011 I suffered from a Lapband slip and my surgeon recommended I undergo RNY Bypass. At first it was a very daunting decision that I wasn't ready to make, but within a month I changed my mind. My codependency to food had returned due to a constant feeling of hunger and an urge to eat after being so severely restricted for 3yrs. Our health system in Australia is very different to the US. We do have public health provided by our tax dollars, but it is a VERY LONG wait for elective surgery. When I was 20 and got my Lapband I didn't have private health, so I had 2 options - wait on the public waiting list - 3-5yrs or pay for outright. So I took the second option and $12,000 later I had a Lapband. When my Lapband slipped in 2011 I didn't have private health cover available to cover the RNY bypass, and my surgeon told me without private health he could only put me on his public wait list for revised surgery. It's been 10months wait now and I go in for surgery in under 4 weeks. I currently weigh close to 140kgs which is over 300lbs. My BMI is 49, nearly 50. The last 10months of my life have been devastating emotionally and physically. I have felt and lived success, but here I am now, bigger than I've ever been, ready to start all over. I'm literally terrified, but at the same time, I am extremely eager to get my "restriction" back. To feel healthy, happy and confident again. I'd love for my husband to know thin me, to feel beautiful for him. I also want him to know that in the next few years I'm going to be healthy enough to give him the family he so eagerly desires. I can't wait to fit into my AU size 12 - US size 8 - clothes again that are piled in boxes in my cupboard. I have so much to strive towards because I've been there, I've felt success, and now I want in more than ever. I wish you all luck and plenty of love on your journeys, I'd love to hear other stories. My surgery is in Brisbane Australia on the 25th of May 2012. All the best, Jacee

So, I was banded 7/2008, got pregnant in 8/08. Didn't "use" band until my daughter was born, so first fill was in May 09. In November 09 started having bad symptoms - food coming out onto pillow when I slept at night. So, I guess you'd say severe regurgitation. I thought it was just part of being banded. Well needless to say I let my symptoms go and go and finally went in to see my doctor in March, he took some fluid out of the band, went back again in April and he took some more fluid out of the band, had an upper GI, scheduled a band revision for yesterday and low and behold I HAD A HIATAL HERNIA......please if you have any wierd symptoms like I did go and see your doctor don't wait. Ugg...
