November 2022 surgery support!
kbsleeved replied to feisty one's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This is my first post! I was sleeved 11/11 and just started the puree stage (my program calls it "smooth textures") on Sunday - yesterday was the first day I managed to hit both my protein and fluid goals, which was really exciting. I managed to eat 4oz of refried beans and hot sauce in the morning, but in the evening could only finish half of the ricotta and egg white scramble I made, so the rest was made up via protein shakes. I'm so happy to be able to add some savory foods back to my diet - I don't have the biggest sweet tooth and I was getting so sick of the taste of protein shakes last week. Right now fluids are still giving me the most trouble, but I've been having better luck using the Owala water bottle with the built-in straw and it hasn't been giving me trouble with extra air. I don't know if it's because I don't swallow as I'm drinking, I still hold all the fluid in my mouth for a second because I'm afraid of taking too big of a drink no matter how I'm drinking it, but I'm glad I can still use my favorite water bottle so far. -
55 lbs is fabulous! Congratulations! So far I've lost 47 at my 3 month mark. My weight loss has slowed down and I panic sometimes thinking I'm eating too much but it's coming along. Exercise is hard for me too. It's cold outside and I don't want to take walks 😩. I'm so happy for all of us! The first couple of weeks after surgery were hard but worth it.

Today is month 3 since surgery. All together I have lost 55 lbs and 36 inches. I need to start an exercise routine. I think that’s my biggest growth area. But I am definitely happy with my progress. Very excited about this. This is a revision for me and this time it feels very different. My surgeon said my weight loss will be slow but I don’t find that to be the case. I think I’m progressing just fine😊.

The way I found my "limit" was to start with 1 sip from a 1 ounce cup every 15 minutes. See how your body tolerates it. If it tolerates it well, then move to 1 sip every 14 minutes, then 13, and so on and so forth. It is a process but you will find your limit within a day or two. One of the one ounce cups should probably take you 2-3 sips to get through, although everyone is different so test that out. If you feel a new pain after your sip, stop and let it fully go away before taking another sip. I think these steps should help anyone with their water intake. Using those steps I was able to find my limit, then I would gradually increase it to my comfort level. I'm just about 3 weeks post op and I'm able to drink about 10-12 ounces an hour or so. It's really important you listen to your body though. The good thing is, as of week 4 your stomach should be healed up and your chance of it bursting/popping is significantly reduced at this point.

I’m in week 4 and it’s still difficult to drink all the water I need a day. Also I haven’t been able to drink the protein because I know I will not be able to drink it all. Anyone have any tips as to what y’all do to keep up? I have my water bottle with me all day and I take sips throughout the day but It’s hard to drink it all still.

Merri Beth replied to Crystal Leifheit's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am one week into the pre-op and these protein shakes are tasting so sweet I can't hardly do it! I have another week of this until surgery and then a few weeks after. I go tomorrow for my pre-surgery appointment so hopefully they can help me find some that are not so sweet ughhhhhh -
1 week post of and severe diarrhea
MyDogsLoveMe replied to switchwitch's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today I had a bit of loose stool. Not too bad but not the norm. I did take extra benefiber, and haven't added anything different so I came to look at this site to see- since I have been pretty much eating the exact same things for two to three weeks- and my yogurt has one of things you listed as sugar alcohol <1g I didn't see it as an issue. Maybe it's that or something else. I'm thinking I should drink some extra fluids to compensate. Scared but excited. -
I don't start mine until the day after Thanksgiving 11/25/22. My doctor's plan seemed to be a bit different than some that I have seen on here. He only requires 1 week. I've already cut back on so much though. How's it going for you?

wait 3 months to eat carbs?!
Haltand replied to qtdoll's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was also told under the program to wait 3 months, but then it turned out that I could not eat carbs for almost 6 months and with a nutritionist gradually introduced them into the diet. So it all depends not only on the program but also on you. -

Never again. My daughter ordered truffle fries thinking there would be just a few shavings of truffle on top but no. These were aioli covered monsters that no one wanted. They gave me heartburn (for the first time in 3 yrs) -
Advice needed: How to do Thanksgiving
heartofmercury posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Veterans of weight-loss surgery, what kind of plan do you go into Thanksgiving with? Do you count calories, weigh your food or just eat tiny portions of what you want? Do you go out of your way to make WLS-friendly sides and desserts? I just broke a 3 week stall and I don't want to go back to that weight ever again. Any tips and tricks are appreciated! -

Post op tale …. first two weeks
summerseeker replied to KimA-GA's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
It takes quite a while for the full signals to kick in. Early out I got a runny nose or started sneezing when I was full. If I missed those signals, I was sick. Later, when your tummy is fully healed your restriction really kicks in and oh boy do you know it. For me that was about 3 months out. -
I agree, it is likely head hunger also. A few other things you can look at is to ensure you are managing your physical hun ger with the sleeve as much as possible. Please consider the following the options: (1) eat solid food that needs chewing, helps to reduce hunger (2) 50% meals are protein based, of a solid form also to help reduce hunger (3) Be well nourished with nutrition have a shake with extra protein powder and a MV for weight loss surgery (4) avoid looking for fullness Hope that helps Helen

3 months post op, lab shows elevated leucocytosis (white blood cells)
Hazel40 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm now 3 months post op and had just my bloodwork done. Noticed that my leucocytes were elevated (upper normal limit here 8,2, which is what my results were the last time (pre op) as they have been usually along that area before as well Now the result was 10,1 so significantly higher, I don't have any acute illnesses at the moment, no cold, haven't had covid etc and would be interested to know if anyone else has had the their leucocytes levels increased after surgery (not directly after, rather months after)? I have been really tired for the past few weeks but there has been some stress in my life, and I have been thinking that that would be a contributor. Covid Testing Prior to surgery
mkellee replied to dejakrohn's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had to do one when they originally scheduled my sleeve in August. Ended up with hernia repair instead. It was MASSIVE, 1/3 of my stomach was in my chest. My sleeve is now rescheduled for December 14th. So I imagine a few days before I'll have to go get another covid test. The coordinator schedules it. Post op tale …. first two weeks
BlessedMomma91 replied to KimA-GA's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am doing really well. The first week was relentless and I was miserable. I am kinda adjusting to my new normal now. I was allowed to start a very limited selection of soft foods yesterday along with my 2 protein shakes. I am still super nervous about it. I can't seem to tell when I'm full. Doc said only 2 tbsp max once a day for now so I stop there (or before that) even though i don't feel any different than before eating it. I'm definitely still learning my body. I am happy with my progress so far. How are you feeling today? Hoping you're still improving. Btw my name is Kim too! 😀 HW: 311 First day of 2wk Pre-op diet: 280 Day of surgery (11/7): 273 Today: 257 -
Night time and my fat brain wants to eat.
mark454 replied to Leo segovia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can relate so much to eating at night. With my old eating habits, it was normal for me to wake up in the middle of the night and eat. I would sometimes eat a whole meal from leftovers. Currently I am 59 days out ( 8 weeks ), and that fat monkey on my shoulder is trying so hard to get me back into old habits. I find myself eating at night again, but thankfully I can't eat much anymore. But still, it's always been a horrible habit of mine. I do try most times to grab something smarter than dinner leftovers, like a banana, or a protein shake. I was surprised to see you were still on pureed food. But I know every doc is different. My doc said post surgery diet was to be 3 days clear liquid, 3 days full liquid, 3 days pureed, then solids as tolerated. I started slow with the solids. At 8 weeks now, there isn't much I haven't eaten ( no junk foods, sweets, or sugary sodas ). But now it's getting scary. I mean, I can only eat so much, but like I heard someone else say, my fat brain wants to eat when I'm not hungry. Eating just because something tastes good. Horrible old habits. I am losing weight ( 33 lbs in 59 days ), but I feel like I can do better. I must somehow convince myself that we should eat to live, not live to eat. I know I am addicted to food and the battlefield is in my brain. It's a daily struggle, but I know I can do this, and so can you ! -
Cardiac patients?
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to Capri81's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m almost 3 years post first WLS (and a little over 2 after revision because of gerd). I have a small PFO and a bicuspid aortic valve (diagnosed while getting cleared for WLS). I have PVCs and SVT in my medical chart due to sepsis from a bowel obstruction. I can’t take metoprolol because my resting blood pressure is too low to support it so I get yearly echos and see my cardiologist twice a year. -
Laura My calories are anywhere between 450 and 750. It just depends on the day. Yes I’m on solid food. I can eat almost anything but a lot of things don’t taste that good anymore. And some things make me nauseous. Luckily I still love chicken! Protein is sometimes hard to hit but water intake is going well. My husband wonders if I’m eating enuf also. Im just taking it day by day and do what I can each day. I go in for my six week checkup next week. Hopefully I can find out what I need to improve on.

A disaster of a breakfast- bacon egg and cheese omelette that made me physically sick. 135 calories for what I ate prior to it coming back up. Then dinner of leftover stuffed pepper casserole topped with garbanzo beans and fried onions. 396 calories. In between I’ve been testing crispy cookie recipes for snickerdoodles and chocolate chip. The red velvet cookies are a cheat using a boxed cake mix (add 2 eggs and 1/2 cup oil) and Hershey’s cream cheese chips. Annnnnnnd, now I’m onto baking oatmeal scotchies and eventually testing a recipe I’m going to call blueberry cheesecake crumbles (blueberry cream cheese cookies with a blueberry swirled cream cheese frosting then topped with streusel. I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do with all these cookies (currently 13 dozen) seeing as thanksgiving is this week and everyone will be eating pies and such. -
I just experienced my first adverse reaction to food that felt like could be dumping. Im a week and a half out from bypass and on puréed food. I had the tummy issues and nauseous and dizziness and anxiety reaction. But it only lasted maybe 15 minutes. It was a milk based protein snack with only 4g added sugar (8g total sugar) and 2 g fat so I’m not sure how that would be dumping. I’ve had some issues with lactose since surgery but not to this extent. Does this sound like dumping?

Hi Tracy, My surgery was about 3 weeks prior to you. Are you on solid food yet? Curious how many calories you are getting nowadays? My husband thinks I'm not eating enough or often enough. I'm at 500-600 calories. Thanks so much for your response. Laura

Panzanella salad with a generous helping of burrata, yum! i feel like i may have over calculated the cals on this one, but looking at the breakdown the majority of the cals came from the burrata and the olive oil, so i guess that makes sense. Anyhoo, 402 calories for the bowl, ate it all! I also had 3 chicken wings i heated up to eat but ended up handing it over the the Kid cuz panzanella salads are effing filling, man.
