    saw the surgeon

Your the second person in the last couple of weeks that has said that a surgeon wouldn't do your band because of a BMI>45. When I questioned my surgeon wondering why a surgeon would say that, he was surprised. We have done patients with BMI's in the 60's and they have been very successful. Makes you wonder if they really believe in the band or not??

    saw the surgeon

Sue, I'm kind of stuck into it now. All of my appointments are set for next week and I assume I'll have a surgery date as soon as the test results are faxed over. I meet the actual doctor tomorrow and I'm sure it's not a problem, since the resident told me that he does lapbands for 50BMI. I feel pretty good about the choice of surgeon. We'll see if I feel the same tomorrow. Thanks for the input, Sue and everyone. I'll keep you updated. Laura

    Weight loss avg

I’d say I’m a fairly slow loser. I lost 16 pounds in first month and 1/2 of it was in the first week. I stalled at weeks 2-3 but since then I’ve lost 2-4 pound per week. I’m about 10 weeks out and have lost 32 lbs. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Protein Shots

Melting mama & Eggface did a video review of one a month or two ago. Had "ice" in the name. The video is on Melting Mama's blog. It was whey isolate if I remember correctly & came in 3 flavors. Drugstore.com sells it. I was considering it but can't find anywhere that sells just one, only a case. If it's anything like Isopuke, I don't want to be stuck with a case.

  8. Congrats to both of you. It is an exciting journey. Looking forward to start my journey in under 2 weeks.
  9. I haven't had my sleeve yet. I'm on visit number 3 of the required 6. I had a very stressful day and a lot happened today. I have been eating healthier and have been doing good until today. I stress ate and ended up going over my daily calories by 800!!! I'm a hog and I'm ashamed.

    Joint pain

I just started my clear liquid diet prep for my surgery on 3/22. I have noticed that in the past month or so my knees have really been bothering me more than normal. For anyone that has already gone through this, would you say that the surgery definitely helped your joint pain? And if so, how long did it take after surgery to start feeling the difference?? Thanks for the help!! Sent from my XT1080 using the BariatricPal App
  11. Hi everyone! I was banded one week ago. This past week has been great (except for pain in chest with deep breathes) until today. My pain is the worst it's been and my tummy is rumbling like crazy. It's seems to be gas pain but nothing is doing to trick. I have a md appointment in 8 hours and am just trying to hold out and not take myself to the hospital. Please tell me I'm not alone in this?! Has anyone else experienced this pain an entire week out of surgery?
  12. I am nearly 3 years post op, and am maintaining an approx 160# loss. I guess you don't get to be the size of two full grown men without there being some "issues" involved, right? Last summer, I was hooked on caffeine big time and was exercising alot. I made goal in Feb 2013 so you can imagine I was feeling like maintaining was a newborn baby that required alot of attention. I didn't exercise to an unhealthy amount, but my motivation was to burn off the anxiety I was feeling.. that is the unhealthy part. I think that when we contemplate our own behaviors, it is the emotions that drive it, and the impact on our lives that determine if it is healthy or not. I used to shop alot at discount stores etc but I didn't spend much and I could afford it. I wasn't addicted, it was more like I marveled that clothes actually looked good on me!!! IT was a novelty. Now, I am like "eh" not so interesting. I don't consider my little blip of being a regular visitor at Ross, TJ Maxx etc as an addiction, but rather a passing phase for me. I have dialed back on both caffeine and exercise considerably... the word addiction means different things to different people so I hesitate to use it, but what I seek is balance and a fullfilling life. I am a work in process, but one of the things I "watch" is what to do with my excess energy. Lately, I have been going to just being active, and less interested in doing boot camps, hard core spinning workouts and stuff. Like, I go dancing which is a bit of exercise AND social. IT makes me feel good, but it doesn't feel like I NEED to do it. When i come home from a night out listening to live music and dancing - which is probably 2-4 times a month (and having zero to 2 drinks depending on the situation and length of evening etc - I never drive buzzed so alot of factors) I feel GREAT. And I feel great the next day, it is like something is being fullfilled. since getting to goal, i feel myself moving up the masloves needs triangle. Now that my basic needs of decent health and fitness is addressed, I seek more from life. I realize that cannot be filled from the outside, but rather from within and I see it as a current and future "area of work" for me. I bet it is for many formerly obese people (and others too!). Like i said, I am a work in process, but the truth of the matter is that once overeating and that protective layer of fat leaves you... you may find yourself trying to figure out what the "new you" is like. For me shedding fat exposed so much energy that it has been a bit much... but i am getting calmer, steadier and more at peace all the time. I realize that this is the number one reason I regained weight when I was younger and got down to a slim weight. I would get very wound up... and just didn't know what to do with it. Being fat made me more sluggish and I guess "content" although that is a strange thought. Anyway, it is good to be armed with information. Some people freak out in the first few months post weight loss - you hear them on this forum wailing over not being able to stuff themselves with food. It didn't really happen for me like that - I think I was oddly more emotionally wrapped up with the fat suit than I was with the food since my "issues" bubbled up more after I got to goal. I guess by the time I had WLS I was so "over" food as a friend, if you know what I mean.

    Water

I just make sure to have a drink with me at all times except for the 80 minutes around each of the 3 meal times. I have a 20 ounce bottle that I use around the clock. I fill it up at bedtime which starts the countdown. I sip from it whenever I wake up at night, then whatever is left in the morning usually gets finished on my drive into the office. I then fill it back up as soon as I get to the office, usually adding some sort of flavoring (crystal light, mio, dasani drops, etc...) I usually focus to finish that 2nd bottle before I have to stop drinking to wait for Breakfast (~8:00). Most days I get it done, but not always. I then make sure to finish the 2nd (if I haven't done so already) as well as put a dent into a 3rd before I get to stop again for lunchtime (~1:00). If I haven't finished that 3rd refill before I leave the office, I focus on finishing it on the drive home (since my drive is about 50 miles it isn't too difficult). So by the time I get to dinner, I'm already at 60oz. That assumes I didn't have a Protein shake for any of my meals, but if so, that bumps it up another 11oz. I then drink whatever I feel I need while working out and wrapping up the night without focusing on the volume. At bedtime, I refill the bottle again, regardless of what is left, ready to start the next day. One thing my nutritionist reminded me of is that the 64oz of Fluid includes all non-caffeinated fluids. This includes soup, Protein shakes, milk, etc...so that helped me a ton in the early stages.

    Stomach Muscles

I'm 2 weeks post-op and tummy bloating is getting better but still there. I've been wearing dresses to work. Today I wore pants but unbuttoned them and folded it in, luckily they stayed up with the zipper!
  15. I have four kids, and they are older, but I am still wondering what to say to them about my surgery: before/after/during. For the most part, they haven't asked a lot. I have 3 girls ages 17, 15 and 14 and a 12 year old boy. They are all in the healthy weight range. My 15 year old was with me during the initial seminar and my doctor's appointment and endoscopy, so she knows the most. The 14 year old has been at camp this last week and has some questions and concerns. I think she is a bit worried about me having a surgery. The other two haven't talked about it very much, but I expect more questions. So far, the talking has been about what I will eat and family meals -- will they need to eat like I do, for instance. Today, my 14-year-old was telling me that hospital food is bad, and she'd bring me some McDonald's when I was in there for my surgery. I had to explain that I couldn't eat McDonald's because my stomach would be healing. I didn't talk long term about no McDonald's. I figured baby steps for that discussion. Any advice from those that are doing this and/or have been there? Thanks!
  16. Ok I am going to confess. I barley tracked what I ate this week, I went out to dinner 3 times, and I am eating carbs more. I normally weigh in on Fridays but I am ashamed and don't want to step on the scale tomorrow. I don't want to get discouraged if I gained... My first adjustment is May 12th. I feel like I am slowly converting to my old ways...

    Guilty...

This is bandster hell that I heard of ... I was banded Mar 26/14... I'm from toronto so we have to wait 7 weeks from surgery date to get a fill (we get a small one at surgery - tiny!) ... I feel like I can eat ALOT of food still and am trying to consciously diet. I've got 2 weeks until I can request a fill... In the meantime willpower & dieting is a huge struggle.... Am I alone with this?

    Talking to your kids?

I have a four year old granddaughter who is with us 4 days a week. My wife explained the whole procedure to her, how the doctor was going to do an operation to make Grandpa get skinny. The night before the surgery she told me, no more popsicles Yampa. You are going to get skinny so we can play soccer. She visited me in the hospital and the IV and monitors seemed to scare her a little bit, she wouldn't come and sit on the bed with me. My biggest problem is my wife, she has been losing weight steadily over the past year by diet and it down 75 pounds, but is afraid to eat in front of me. Now our kids are afraid she is going to become anorexic!

    tired of horror stories

Read this site! Yes, there are stories where people have had problems but it would be a surprise if everyone sailed through. But look at the stories of people further down the track and the majority are leading lives that are healthier and happier than before. I had a bad reaction to the anaesthetic - but that was more than weeks ago and all the good stuff that has happened since far outweighs a few bad days to start with. Keep yourself informed using the site so u have answers to all the negative naysayers and to any concerns u may have yourself. Alternatively smile at them, make all of sorts of noises that sound as if u r listening but tune them out while all the time thinking that this is your life to be lived as you see fit and that the only point of view that matters when making the decision is yours. Good luck!!! X

    Gastric Band

Everyone is different. My nurse put one on me and the next day my dr got upset bc he didn't want me to wear it. He said only for opens, not lap. In prior surgeries it was 4 weeks.

    weight loss before surgery

Weighed 350 at start, because of high bp and diabetes, my doctor put me on preop diet 2 months before he would consider doing sleeve. I wasn't given amount I had to lose. Because I wanted sleeve soo bad, I followed the plam and lost 49 lbs in 2 mths. (That's when my surgeon told me he was expecting me to lose only 25 lbs in that time.) I had surgery Oct 3, 2016. Starting weight 350, Surgery weight 301, Current weight 252. I also gained 15 lbs immediately post surgery, from immlamation, fluids and infection, I count that as weight lost so I've lost 100+ lbs. Gastric Band

The hospital I was at the binder aka (girdle) basically a tummy holder inner type thing, was optional. I requested it because I felt my skin was tearing off and it held it up nicely. I used this for 1 week. Per choice
