  1. I was band to bypass revision. Done because the band was no longer working, because studies show that over the long term the band causes a lot of damage and also reflux.
  2. Gerd never had it before sleeve in 03/18 now I have gerd and hiatal hernia i really don’t want rny but with all of the new info coming out about ppi not being safe long term, a revision is what it will be.
  3. I had the sleeve March 2014 & was good for a couple years, but in 2016 was hospitalized with severe inflammation in my stomach, a large hiatal hernia and GERD. I previously had no history of this prior to surgery. I was prescribed 80mg of omerzapole, carafate and zofran. Been suffering with horrible reflux ever since. In February my pcp added 300mg of zantac. Still no relief and the Bariatric surgeon is now recommending revision to the bypass. Has anyone experienced this? Did the insurance approve the revision for medical reasons? I have BCBS Massachusetts. Thanks in advance
  4. Oh my gosh, thank you all for such amazing support! Hearing the word "inspiration" makes me so happy because for so long, I looked on this website/app researching and reading success stories and was never really sure if I could do it like those people. As for your revision, I'm sure that can be quite scary worrying that you won't lose the weight, keep it off, etc... BUT, you have to think positively! The minute I got my surgery date, I found this newfound hope that I had never had before! I've lost crazy amounts of weight over the years but could never sustain the weight loss, but with the sleeve, it is like HEAVEN! I can now eat anything (I don't obviously, but it doesn't make me sick if I have a bite of something, however, I get full after just a few bites. Perfect example: sushi is my favorite food. After surgery, I felt like I was going to have to give it up for forever! I used to be able to eat 3-4 rolls just by myself... That's like 24-30 pieces!!! Now, I can't eat more than 2 pieces of sushi and I feel the same fullness as I would have before surgery! Best of luck to each of you who has a surgery date, waiting for one, or those post-op like myself! I posted a pic earlier, but will post it on this thread in case anyone is interested!
  5. BAND REVISION TO VSG 4/30/13 I AM ALMOST 6 WEEKS OUT AND HAVE FELT FINE/ FINE/ FINE .... UNTIL NOW. ALL OF A SUDDEN I CANT' HANDLE Vitamins OR KEEPING drinks DOWN. STILL HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET BEYONG THICK pureed. NOW I SEEM TO BE FEELING REALLY WEAK , CANT' CONCENTRATE AND ALL OF A SUDDEN I/M ITCHING EVER WHERE. I HAVE NEVER HAD AN ALLERGY PROBLEM WITH ITCHING SO I CANT SEE IT AS ALLERGIES. I JUST FEEL MY GENERAL IMMUNITIES ARE DOWN AND WONDER WHY THE SUPPLEMENTAS ARE NOT HELPING. I HAVE BEEN UP SINCE 2:00 JUST UNCOMFORTABLE. WENT TO TAKE A SHOWER AND HAVE WHAT LOOKS LIKE MOSQUITO BITES HERE AND THERE MOSTLY AROUND JOINTS. NOT A LOT BUT IF IT WERE MY KID I WOULD WONDER IF IT WAS START OF CHICKENPOX...... THE SHOWER FELT BAD LIKE Water WAS MAKING ME ITCH MORE THOUGHT MAYBE I SHOULD EAT SOMETING SO WARMED UP SOME chicken broth BUT MY STOMACH IMMEDIATLEY STARTED MAKING LOUD GURGLING/ GROWLING NOISES AND I FEEL LIKE I DESPERATLY NEED SOMETHING TO DRINK BUT I KNOW THAT WILL ONLY FLY BACK OUT NEED TO WAIT AT LEAST 45 MIN FOR ME. HEAVEN HELP ME I JUST FEEL LIKE **** TODAY AND HATE TO MISS ANOTHER DAY OF WORK !! BUT MY JOB IS SO HIGH STRESS/ HIGH QUOTA THAT I MUST CONCENTRATE TO MAX AND I CAN'T !!
  6. It is an adjustment for sure! But do a search on revisions + GERD and you'll see hundreds of stories of people who had the sleeve then had to have a second surgery to solve the reflux problem. Your surgeon is trying to save you from disappointment and pain (literally.) I wish could have the sleeve, but I can't. It took a few weeks to adjust my mindset, but now I'm ready to go again! You will be too. Sent from my SM-G930V using BariatricPal mobile app

Success with sleeve after band failure?

I also had a band failure and will be having my sleeve revision surgery shortly. In the meantime, I hope to see more "success with sleeve after band failure" stories.

    Lapband slipped twice

I have Anthem BC BS. I had band surgery in fall 2007..worked pretty good until summer of 2008...had a blockage, then gall bladder removed in November 2008..surgeon took out band and repositioned it during that surgery (that option not even discussed before the gall bladder removal). Anyway, it never worked right again. So, November 2013 I have requested to it removed and revised to the RNY. Insurance okayed band removal, but denied the RNY. I had to go thru all the nut classes, and psych evaluation again. will finish that up next week, and resubmit the RNY request. I will let you know what the out come is, I hope by the end of February. I am getting quite anxious and still nervous that they will deny me again. Good luck to you, I have seen many on here that have no problem getting approval for revisions.
  10. Hi guys! Revision patient here. I was banded in 2011, then had my band removed last June and am now scheduled and approved for bypass on Thursday. Im so scared, I keep thinking maybe I should reschedule. Wondering if anyone else has/had these thoughts: -what if i die -can I commit to the lifetime of changes -what if I gain weight back -what if I lose all the weight and still am not happy -what if, what if, what if.... Also, this is silly but I can’t miss weeks of work. Anyone go back fairly soon after?

Removed LapBand and had Gastric Sleeve

The "facts" are that you are very much in control of your own success. You didn't mention your BMI or how close to goal you are, but starting out smaller is one of many reasons revisionistas tend to "lose slow". I lost 150# post revision and have been maintaining quite awhile. I don't even remember how much weight I had lost 2 months post op.... follow the rules, don't stress over the small things and you will find success. I strongly recommend measuring and tracking intake though because my sensors were all messed up and I had to relearn to eat healthy and appropriately for weight management.
  12. Thanks everyone, I've certainly not been doing as well as you guys!!! I'm 2 weeks post op and have just been pottering around the house and walking up to the street to get milk most days! My first week post op was pretty damn awful - I'm not sure I could have found my way to the mailbox let alone walk 5 miles!! I'm a band to bypass revision and had quite a lot of scar tissue dug out of me too so not sure if that has slowed my recovery a little too? I have been using my Fitbit to keep track of my steps and trying to get 500 more in every day to ensure an increase in activity level every day. I return to work next Tuesday and don't want to be taking naps at lunch time in my car LOL Well done to you all though - pretty awesome effort considering what your bodies have been through...... And congrats on all of your weight loss - simply amazing!!
  13. hi LuckyG well done. I am having a revision of my Bypass as I have put on some weight and I think its due to my stretching my pouch. the past months I had to leave my job due to arthritis in my hip and got into a grazing cycle, although it didnt click for a while, of that was what I was doing. with the sweet tooth, that is interesting. I aways had a sweet tooth and was hoping my taste buds would change or at least get severe dumping but the only dumping I got was dizzyness and sweating. would love to catch up with you if possible to get some handy tips from you. I live in mooloolaba on the coast.
  14. I am so sorry for your news about your hubby. And on top of that your health issues sound extremely painful and uncomfortable. I too am one of the 3-5 % of patients that have continued to have complications due to the sleeve. Mine are different then yours but I can relate to the time passing and things not getting better as far as the body adjusting. Like you this has been a long haul for me and others as well. I am wondering why you do not want to take the bypass option. This could be the answer to your situation. I had Roux-en-Y loop which is a type of bypass that worked for my leak.....I know your problems are different but I don't understand why you would not take any option open to you after 2 years of struggling with this much pain. You are a trooper I tell you that. I am 16 months out and wonder if I can keep up the journey... Still here so I guess so. Like you happy, happy, happy with the weight lost but wish the trouble was over. A lot of patients who had reflux trouble find it does return after a period of time. I hope that soon your health trouble will ease for you. Again so sorry about your hubby. Please let us know how things are going Yes, I know of four people that have revised because of GERD. One is doing well... all the other three aren't. One of the main reasons is I don't want to risk any more problems. I didn't want gastric bypass ever because I just don't. That is why I chose the sleeve and I know my problems don't compare to what you and others have been through. I've read your posts. I'm blessed really to just have this. The other reason is I can't afford it. I paid for my sleeve and my insurance will not pay for surgery even if I'm having problems. My husband is dying and I can't even think of that now. I'm taking care of him. I just know that if I had known that I would have developed my spasms, I wouldn't have had the surgery but everything is a risk and I've been blessed as I say not to have had more issues as you and others have. 1 in 4 is not good odds. Your problems are just as bad as mine. And deserve the help and attention of professionals. they helped cause the situation. They need to fix it.... You are dealing with so much right now and my heart goes out to you. Thank you for telling me why you are not having the bypass...It is up to each of us to chose for ourselves what is best. You are your own advocate! It is hard when you don't know what can happen. that is why I have put my story out there so it might help others to see that this is not the easy way out. There are people out there that have done this and are paying dearly for it.... I truly hope things improve for you and it bothers me so much that at this time you are dealing with a family night mare..... I am so sorry Lisa

It really is a nightmare and I know others go through more but my sweet husband is only 48. I am thankful that God gave us this time to get things in order and he wasn't taken from me suddenly. Thanks for your support!
  16. Hey Bryn! I was following up to see if you got your revision to bypass! I see you now belong to Gastric Bypass Patients so I assume you did. How are you doing and feeling? Edit: I see, May 9th! Good luck, one week!
  17. Yes on the perfect storm! Ugh! Like I said in a reply above my relationship with food is better than before surgery, but somewhere along the track I grew apathetic (probably because of depression!) and I've hit a brick wall since, so I will absolutely be working on that from here on out. Revision would be something I really seek out hard sometime next year if dietary and activity adjustments just don't work. I don't exercise as much as I want to but I'm hoping with next semester I'll have a more structured schedule and I WILL be putting ~3 hours of treadmill every week minimum. Even if it's just walking, it's something! Thank you all for your kind and thoughtful responses! I will definitely be working on the "things I can change" stuff first and foremost and only really go for revision in due time if my weight doesn't see tremendous benefit down the line.

Pain in my left side when I breathe

I am not sure what the prognosis of this was, but I started having pain in my left rib cage after I ate, or took a deep breath or laid on my right side. I also had pain in my left shoulder blade area (which is from the band/banding rubbing against the vagus nerve, and I have gotten off and on since being banded 2 years ago, but more so now with the rib pain). After dealing with it for a few days I call my bariatric surgeon's office and told them what was going on. They immediately got me in for a barium swallow eval and some x-rays. My surgeon called me later that day and told me my band has slipped. Back in May 2014, I had bad gastroenteritis which sent me to the hospital because I couldn't throw up, yet I was wrenching and super nauseated. Two weeks later I got stuck...and I couldn't get it out. After hours of trying and not being able to swallow my own saliva, I went to the ER for an emergency un-fill by my surgeon. Since then, I have take my fills very slowly. The last one was in August 2014, and I am not in the green zone for fear of getting stuck again, so I honestly don't know what, how or when my band slipped. Since yesterday I have developed severe reflux and nausea. I go in today to get un-filled yet again and let my band settle hopefully. I also asked about getting a revision to either the sleeve or bypass since having this band has caused me a lot of pain and multiple ER visits and once it slips, it has a high chance of it happening again, so if I'm going to need surgery to fix it, I may as well try something that will work better...I hope you all figured out what the problems were and got them fixed. Best of luck!
  19. Hello all. I am in Las Vegas and am trying to do research on Dr. Tom Umbach here in LV. He is one of the newer (a few years) bariatric docs here in town. Background on me: banded in 2005, leak in band 2008, band removed (hoping to revise to sleeve at same time) March 2009, was not able to revise. Looking at getting the sleeve at this point. Any thoughts? :lol0:

    I want off this ride!

I get it! I am currently trying the second time for a revision after a rejection last year. Just remember that its a journey. Because of your acid reflux you might not be a good fit for the sleeve.
  21. So i had sleeve done last Monday. So far so good. I do get some pain in my chest if i lay flat in a bed (Maybe acid reflux) but if i just prop up my head i am good. But never know if revision may be needed in the future and since i am self pay that could be a problem. here in Florida bariatric surgery is not covered under the affordable care act (obamacare) So i have been doing research on which states do. One in particular is South Dakota. So if i were to say move to South Dakota, establish my residency there and get health insurance thru the affordable care act, Bariatric surgery is covered. one great resource there is a company called America's Mailbox, where you can setup your own residency (in a RV) get a drivers license, south dakota plates ect... Think that will be my backup plan if one day in the future i need a revision which i hope i do not.

    I want off this ride!

@@parisshel The fills never hurt me (even through the layers of scar tissue) and I was never offered a pain med for it. Didn't even know that it was available! A band patient will always have to research new Drs in any area they move too. They might have to end up driving hundreds of miles for a Dr. willing to service them (an existing band patient). Many don't want to service them. And here is another thing to consider - it is not permanent! It will have to come out eventually. It is a hard thing to accept when you just get banded, because you are still excited and it is still working for you. My mother had her's out after 3 years. Just found out my band is not in the right place, so that might help speed the revision along (after 7.5 years I was lucky!) Why invest in a procedure that doesn't have a good track record? My Dr. doesn't even perform bands anymore or even offer a monthly support group for bandsters. We are lumped together with the other WLS groups.

    Day 3 after surgery.

Day 3 after surgery. Was hopping for no complications and easy recovery.. But S%$# happens. Due to my old surgeries, banding took over 2h and got 8 halls in my tummy. I am so-so glad I did my research and found the RIGHT doctor - Dr Fielding. I am sure if it was any other doc I would of had an open surgery. So now I am home and recovering. I can drink, and I am forcing the required Protein drinks in me. Forcing is the key word. I am obviously not hungry - only 3 days post opp. But I am also afraid I will fail in weight loss or even worth will require revision or band removal if I eat. So my question is: Is it normal to be scared of food even liquids after the surgery?
  24. I was revised in 1 procedure and he said I had a ton of scar tissue. I was banded in 2008. mThe surgery took over 3 hrs instead of 1.5. One of the scrub techs was actually a friend of mine and she said they have never seen so much scar tissue. They had to switch out midway between the procedure to give a break. I kind of wish they would have recorded it because I would have loved to seen it. Weird I know but I work in the health care field.

Best WLS for my weight? Process?

I was just going to suggest you check out the duodenal switch and saw Life Under Construction beat me to it. It's a good option for you to check out. Most patients stop their diabetes medication within the first month. I'm six weeks post-op from the DS (revision after the lap-band), and it's been a good choice for me. While I never had diabetes, the weight has steadily dropped off, unlike when I had the lap-band. I looked at all of the options and became well educated on the life time commitment before I decided which surgery had the best long-term results and lifestyle I could live with. Wishing you the best.
