..alright I know, yuck but I think it's something that needs to be addressed. Before I had surgery I was petrified of throwing up post-op, I had tons of Zofran and worried about it a lot. After having both a sleeve then a revision to bypass I just wanted to let people know my experience with it and have a place to talk about other's experiences to hopefully alleviate some pre-op worries! So, it's not fun but it's not life-ending like I thought it would be. If you eat too much, it actually feels better to get it out..please try to avoid this and never ever ever make yourself throw up on purpose to get rid of pain. Your body will tell you if you messed up and if you have to throw up, take some deep breaths and just let your body naturally get rid of whatever it needs to. I fought my body a dozen times, tried to take Zofran when I just needed to relax and let myself throw up and once I did it, I felt so much better. It's not any worse than throwing up from the flu and in fact, USUALLY you only throw up for a few minutes and then it's over. So, be very very careful not to eat too much but if you mess up (which will happen) just try to calmly let your body decide how to fix it. In my experience, I got way too worked up and scared over how bad it would hurt to throw up when really it's not so scary and is really no different post-op then it is pre-op. Now, as a disclaimer..if you are throwing up regularly or if you are throwing up and you know it wasn't because you did something wrong (ate too fast, had too much, didn't chew well enough, had too big of a bite, etc.) you NEED to call your doctor..right away! Throwing up is not something that should be happening very often and if it is, something could be wrong and you must let your doctor know ASAP! I'd love for others to post their experiences as well because I think it would have helped me to read something like this before I had surgery because most of the time..mental fears are WAY worse than reality!

Hi Everyone: My name is Toni and I'm 23 years old and 315 lbs. I have been heavy and depressed sense I was 9 years old. I never wanted gastric bypass because to me it was so scary to have pieces of your anatomy actually removed :frown: I also didn't feel like I was ready for it, I didn't think I could change ... i had a lot of emotional problems. But through therapy I have come to realize that I deserve to be happy and that I'm ready to make this change in my life. I'm really excited to have this surgery. I have chosen Shasta Medical Center in Redding California to have my surgery. I have my seminar/orientation on February 5th. I just can't wait to get rolling. Any helpful information would be great. Thanx, Toni

Dr. discouraging use of Lap-Band
lori1629 replied to badta00's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am on my last month of physician supervised visits, and I get the same discouragement from my surgeon, even when I went to Support Group meeting the people who had Lap Band seemed to struggle with weight loss though they were all losing it was at a much slower rate than bypass. When I mentioned that I was undecided as to which surgery to choose lap band or bypass (sleeve is not option for me) all by passers were very quick to push bypass while the lap banders sat quietly while I gave my reasons why I was leaning toward lap band. Then slowly one by one they encouraged me to continue on that path because even though they were losing slowly that were all very happy with their decision. Also, when I looked around the room the lap banders were they ones with great skin color, bright eyes, and no hair loss. That stuck with me the most, yes,I need to lose weight but I want to do it with the best long term health consequence. I do not want to become deficit in other areas. I need something to guide me toward making the right choices to lose weight and change my bad habits. Lap band, I feel is that tool, along with support from my WLS center, websites like this, and good support system I am finally going to win this war of unhealthy weight gain. -
My Dr.'s office has been trying to get me to do the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass instead of the band. They initially told me that the results wouldn't be as good with the band. My appointment last month the PA said that they were experiencing more problems with the band (i.e.; acid reflux, slippage, low weight loss). Today I talked to the Dr and after talking about my expectations, he said he'd be hesitant to to the Band on me. He doesn't think that I'll lose enough weight. But after talking about my problems with the Roux-en-Y he recommended the Sleeve if my insurance would cover it. I'm worried about the sleeve because one of my earlier appointments we had a class in his office and some one asked about the sleeve. The PA said that they weren't really happy with the sleeve due to leakage problems. What should I do? I'm trying to do research online but I've been set on doing the Lap-Band so long that I'm torn on what to do.

I want to get the sleeve based on the research I've done, (removes the hunger creating chemical producer from your body), your stomach can still be scoped, less surgery time, less recovery time, etc. but I also hear good things about the bypass... My consult is on Wednesday, and I'm going to ask the nurse practitioner which she recommends for my specific case, but ultimately I think it will be my decision. Convince me that I'm making the correct one.

Sleeve vs bypass?
T'snewstart replied to karpouzian's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got the sleeve because I had 2 co-workers get the bypass and they just seem miserable. It just seems most people I have come in contact with was so unhappy after the bypass. While I wanted a change from the constant struggle with my excess weight I did not want to be unhappy. Beside all the medical reasons ...as I am sure you have researched the differences. The bypass is so much more complicated. Many more complications can occur. One big problem is the lack of ability to absorb the Vitamins and nutrients that is needed. The sleeve for me was the best decision ever! My weight loss results are exactly the same as the co-workers. I do not have the troubles they experience. I live a happy normal life. Socially it is easy to adjust ( after the first few months). Over all it comes down to the individual really. The surgeons expectations goes as follows: after the first 2 years bypass patients are expected to lose on average: 60-80% of their excess weight , sleeve patients 50-70% of the excess weight. However, that too is up to the patient. At my 5 month check up I had already lost 40% of my excess weight. I said all that to say..... If you follow the surgeons instructions and get the most out the of the sleeve you can have equal results..... Best wishes on your decision and surgery! -

Inner Surfer Girl replied to LousPeachy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Welcome. I'm in my 50s (that may be the first time I have ever written that statement) and have a higher BMI than you. I was recently sleeved on April 20. Don't assume that based on BMI that you have to go with the bypass. Everyone is different and your surgeon and research should help you decide on the best procedure for you. Best of luck. -
Dr. discouraging use of Lap-Band
ElfiePoo replied to badta00's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Keep in mind that when these doctors are talking about success rates, 'success' is determined by patients losing 50% of their weight...and they only track for a short period of time. By those guidelines, bypass is far more successful, because patients will lose about 60% of their excess weight just from the malabsorption aspect of the surgery...and they'll lose it quickly. However, you read the statistics 2-3 years out, you'll find that it sort of all evens out and there's little difference between any of the WLS surgeries in terms of 'true success'. There are many bypass patients who never lose any more than that and some will actually gain their weight back. Some do just fine after surgery, but there are also people who have one medical problem after another as a result of the malabsorption...and you never know which one you're going to be until it's too late and you're stuck with whatever it is because it's not reversible. I've had my band for 15 months now and am having it taken out due to constant phrenic nerve pain in my shoulder. I'm still debating whether I'll have the revision to a sleeve. I'm not worried about any 'leaks'...the success rate without postop complications is very very good. I just haven't wrapped my head around the idea of cutting out most of my stomach...but that's just me. If I could get my head around that, knowing what I now know about the band...I'd do the vertical sleeve without any qualms. -
3 months of supervised diet? DONE Psych eval? DONE 17 pages of notes sent to BCBS for approval? DONE My packet o' papers was faxed over to Blue Cross this morning! This is our second shot at approval. I think we dotted and crossed everything now and I will be approved this time. I lost 15 pounds on the supervised diet but find myself doing a little cheating lately since the 3 months is done and I want to eat whatever I want while I can. Anyone else in the same boat as me? I was hoping for November surgery and now I'm thinking it's going to be January. It'll be a good way to start the new year!

Anyone have a sleeve fail and did bypass? HELP
Martene81 replied to peacheeie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm in the pre op stage so I can't offer any help but I'd like to follow the thread because I'm trying to decide between the sleeve or bypass. I've heard a lot more people talk about little or no restrictions with the sleeve so for that reason am leaning more towards bypass so I don't have to go through another surgery in the future. hopefully someone can offer some advice on how to help so you don't have to go through another surgery. -
Looking for information on whether or not the lap band is the right choice for me. I don't want gastric bypass. I am currently 192-195 and 4 feet 11 inches tall. I am in excellent health. What can I expect to lose and what is life like after the band procedure? Lots of questions I know, but I am truly a real newbie where this is concerned. Thank you so much.

Surgery scheduled for nov 10th... Anyone else?
mariecw replied to leannah's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, this my first time sharing on the forum. My surgery date is November 20th although I'm trying to get that date pushed up so that I can be at least mobile for the holidays. I was so excited when I made the decision to have the RNY surgery, now that excitement is mixed with anxiety and fear. I know that I wouldn't turn back but I do need the support. -
Why did you choose vsg over other wls?
jessicaanders29 replied to jessicaanders29's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel so similar! After all my research, I just KNEW the sleeve was right for me. Am I a little scared about the acid reflux being worse? Yes I am, but not as scared as the possible side effects from gastric bypass. I may not be your average wls recipient either. I have a high tolerance for pain, my surgeon could not believe what my X-ray looked like of my band that I had been living like that for years. I just thought well, this is how its suppose to be! -
Surgery scheduled for nov 10th... Anyone else?
leannah posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all! I'm new to this site and trying to figure things out.. Not sure if its the site or my phone but it doesn't want to update my profile or picture... Anyways.. I'm scheduled for surgery on November 10th... Anyone else scheduled around this time? I need some support and people who are experiencing the same/similar things I am! I'm beyond scared to have the surgery... I have never in my life had a surgery or heck even a stitch! I sometimes want to back out or find myself talking myself out of the surgery.. I hope I'm not the only one! I see a lot of people excited for their surgery and don't get me wrong, I'm excited but more scared. Well, looking forward to meeting new people and going through this journey with someone who understands or can relate. -
Yay! I made it over to the post-op site!

Cant wait for my new life to start.

My surgeon backed out last minute doing all and any gastric surgeries and now I'm in the market for a new one... Thank goodness I found one that accepted my insurance and I had all the pre-requisite testing done before hand... But now my biggest decision is to have either the bypass or the sleeve... My biggest fear is that the decision that I do think I do not want to fail my weight-loss goals now and in the future... Can anyone out there give me some of their experiences with both the bypass or sleeve???

Changing My Attitude
MrsGloMartin replied to MrsGloMartin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes Lisavz, that's the spirit!!! I tend to find myself comparing myself to my neighbor who had her surgery in November and was hospitalized twice for dehydration and her incision rupturing before she finally got it all under control and began to lose weight. She's lost 75 lbs but she does not work out because she says she's too busy. She went through way more than I did to get to where she is now. I just want to be positive and share my story here with everyone. Hopefully I will inspire someone or encourage someone to give it their all and make this awesome change in their life. God bless you and all the best as you begin your WLS journey !!! -
I have struggled for many years with the Gastric Bypass Surgery. Should I get it? Should I not get it? Should I just try another diet and fail? Being over weight has been a constant companion my entire life. As I grew up I would weigh myself thinking ok I weigh 160 lbs., I won't ever reach 165, if I reach 165, then I will work out more and watch what I eat. Next thing I knew I was 170, so I would play the compromise game once again. OK 180, I promise myself I will never reach 180, I just won't allow it... Well after several deals that I could not even keep with myself I am now 260 pounds. I am miserable, my back and knees hurt constantly! My entire family is obese and I just figured that was the cards that I had drawn in life and so that is what I will have to deal with. I have done a lot of research regarding the many types of surgery out there and have decded for myself that the Gastric Sleeve is the best match for me. I am excited to get things started and will be going to a Seminar tonight. My first appointment is on January 29th where I will meet with my doctor. I know that this is not a fast process and have read several other posts stating just that, so I am not in a real big hurry to get the surgery, but I am in a hurry to feel better physically and emotionally about myself. I don't blame anyone for the size I am or the reason how I got this way.

Terrified of not losing weight
tdtucker replied to Cherrob's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was in the same boat as you. So many tried to push me to get Bypass, but I decided what was best for me and got the Lap Band. I think the most important thing to remember is that it is YOUR decision and that the Lap Band isn't a fix all. It's a tool to help us achieve what all of us have struggled so long with, to lose weight. My Nut put it best I think. She said that I had to make the choice of using this tool to my advantage, or letting the tool use me. I can tell you from the other side, I am 1 week post-op, that I am so happy with my decision and would make the same one again and again. Good Luck!
