went to the ER with chest pains, guess what it was?
Lisa's Hope replied to birdmadgirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am so sorry for your news about your hubby. And on top of that your health issues sound extremely painful and uncomfortable. I too am one of the 3-5 % of patients that have continued to have complications due to the sleeve. Mine are different then yours but I can relate to the time passing and things not getting better as far as the body adjusting. Like you this has been a long haul for me and others as well. I am wondering why you do not want to take the bypass option. This could be the answer to your situation. I had Roux-en-Y loop which is a type of bypass that worked for my leak.....I know your problems are different but I don't understand why you would not take any option open to you after 2 years of struggling with this much pain. You are a trooper I tell you that. I am 16 months out and wonder if I can keep up the journey... Still here so I guess so. Like you happy, happy, happy with the weight lost but wish the trouble was over. A lot of patients who had reflux trouble find it does return after a period of time. I hope that soon your health trouble will ease for you. Again so sorry about your hubby. Please let us know how things are going Yes, I know of four people that have revised because of GERD. One is doing well... all the other three aren't. One of the main reasons is I don't want to risk any more problems. I didn't want gastric bypass ever because I just don't. That is why I chose the sleeve and I know my problems don't compare to what you and others have been through. I've read your posts. I'm blessed really to just have this. The other reason is I can't afford it. I paid for my sleeve and my insurance will not pay for surgery even if I'm having problems. My husband is dying and I can't even think of that now. I'm taking care of him. I just know that if I had known that I would have developed my spasms, I wouldn't have had the surgery but everything is a risk and I've been blessed as I say not to have had more issues as you and others have. -
Surgeon agrees today to do port revision surgery
sandylane replied to Katy517's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a port revision last week. They put in a low profile port, you may need to ask about that type. My first port was on my side. I didn't want it on my abdominal muscles because of the pain doing sit-ups. However, once I had lost weight it stuck out like some tumor. It was awful, embarrassing and just downright gross. In the meantime the tubing came disconnected from the port and they decided to do a port revision. I now have a low profile port in the same spot on my right side. I hope your request will go through. I've heard of some women having theirs put above their breast toward their armpit to avoid the ugly tumor once they've lost their weight. -
Surgeon agrees today to do port revision surgery
Katy517 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was banded on 4/15 and had problems immediately related to my port. It sticks way out, rubs on a rib and causes a great deal of discomfort when I exercise or even bend over. It actually throbs when I exercise. Very weird. Anyway, I've been complaining since about 4 days post-op and just had what must have been my 5th or 6th follow-up appointment in the past 12 weeks. Up to now my surgeon kept asking me to be patient and wait it out suggesting that once I lost enough weight it would move/settle and the pain would dissipate. He said that all that was available was another surgery and he didn't want to go that route. Today I informed my surgeon that I wanted to do something since it bothers me so much. Also told him that in all likelihood I will not have insurance that covers anything that is WLS-related after the first of next year. He agreed - for the most part. He said that he'd have his office staff pursue getting pre-approval from my insurance for port revision surgery, but is confident that by the time it comes around to do the surgery I won't feel the need any longer. I get the feeling that he just doesn't want to admit to placing it in a bad spot. Anyway, I feel a huge sense of relief knowing that correcting this problem is finally in the works. Who has had port revision surgery? I'm told that recovery is much quicker than for WLS. Any experience out there? TIA. -
Band to Sleeve revision is done and I am feeling great!
WLSResources/ClothingExch replied to thetig's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Sounds good. As I may be revising to sleeve, I'll be following your reports. My fate has yet to be determined, as I'll be reacquainting myself with my surgeon, NP and the gang. It's been a while, not a good one. I was banded twice four days apart at age 61. You're the only other person I've come across who had a similar experience, but moreso. If my second surgery had been problematic, I don't know that I would have gone for a third. My med plan required an overnight stay which worked in my favor. For the rest of the day after surgery #1 (10cc band), I was able to sip Water easily. Went for esophagram the following morning; the barium came right up. After that, not even the smallest sips of water would stay down. My surgeon thought that there may have been much fat on the side of the liver not visible during surgery or that I may have had swelling at the band site (or both, I suppose). I was put on IV for hydration and we decided to wait a few days to see if any internal swelling would go down. My initial feeling was, "Get this damned thing out of me and let me go home." Then I switched to, "After all this there is no way in hell that I'm leaving here without a band." Still unable to tolerate sips, we went back to surgery on day #4 (14cc band). All was well thereafter; went home the following day. I love my surgeon and never found fault with her. She truly felt bad for my experience and was supportive all the way. To make a long story longer, I did wonderfully well the first 15 months and then went downhill, an incident started me on regaining much of what I'd lost. On two occasions my band was loosened due to dilation and I'm sure I'm dilated again. Hence, my expectation that revision is on the horizon (the NP suggested I see the surgeon to discuss this quite a while ago). I don't want to walk away from the whole thing. I want to see through what I started way back. Your big smile is visible in your message. Keep going. -
Lap-Band to Mini Gastric Bypass Revision
knormlaver posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was banded in 2006 (private pay) and thought I did fairly well going from 220lb to 150lb in the first year or so. Over the next 10 years, I had my third child and managed to maintain about a 55lb loss. I was and remain dedicated to work outs 4-5 days a week. However, I never felt like I ever found that "sweet spot" with my fills. I had to make a 14 hour round trip for fills and the surgeon I had was the least compassionate, most fat phobic person I've ever encountered. How he got into that line of work I'll never know. Unfortunately, he was the only option in near my home town at the time when Lap-band was fairly new in Canada. I spent most of the time either feeling hungry or nauseated/stuffed and if I'm honest with myself, I think a threw up at least once almost every day of that 10 years (surgically induced bulimia?) Last year things got bad with my band. It became way too tight (even when completely unfilled) and I experienced terrible reflux at night and could barely tolerate fluids. It had to be removed. Luckily another surgeon closer to my home had started to do band surgery and was willing to remove it. He said with the earlier versions of the Lap-band, they often become inflexible and too tight after a long period of time. With this surgeon, my only option was to replace it with another gastric band (Mid-band is his device of choice). I could not convert to a sleeve or bypass as this is not offered as a private pay option in the province where I reside. There is a 5-7 year waitlist for government-funded weight loss surgeries. He said he wanted to see how I did with it out and that he "had faith in" my ability to keep the weight off. Well, I think we all know what the research says about gastric band removals. Despite my best efforts to watch what I ate and maintain my exercise routine, I regained almost all of the weight. Even though I eat a healthy diet (way healthier than what I could tolerate with the band), in less than a year I found myself 10lbs shy of my highest weight. My blood sugar and blood pressure are creeping up and I'm noticing more PCOS symptoms again. So, I started researching self-pay options for gastric sleeve surgery out of province. The surgeon I consulted with feels that the MGB is the best option for me. I'm not thrilled about paying for this again along with airfare and hotel. And not only do I get the pleasure of paying for WLS twice, it's extra because revision surgery requires more OR time. But I think my health is worth it. I'm booked for September 28th and have started my 2-week pre-op liquid diet (blech!) Part of me is scared that the surgery won't work. I feel like I have the slowest metabolism in the world. This, combined with my meds that promote weight gain and my PCOS, makes it feel like the odds are against me. However, my surgeon reassures me I'll do well. I've found reading about others' successful revisions also very encouraging. Thanks for reading my story. -
Lap-Band to Mini Gastric Bypass Revision
Garveydanielle replied to knormlaver's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Best of luck to you on this revision. Can you tell me more about the mini gastric bypass? How is it different then the regular bypass? -
I totally understand. BUT I also had an awful scar from the 1 st surgery. And this time. My surgon revised my original scar and the new one is so much better !! And I also figured an average scar to show on a skinny belly is better than a smooth fat belly covered !!

LapBand Erosion Anyone?
Maddie replied to blondie1007's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I personally can't relate, but we have several members who had revisions from band to sleeve due to similar problems. Best of luck with what you decide to do, keep us posted. -
I had a Lapband for 6 years and lost only 44 lbs with it. I was constantly hungry. Went for many fills and either could still eat too much or was so tight I couldn't eat at all and had to go back to have some taken out. I completely agree with what Desertmom posted. The absolute best thing about being Sleeved is not being hungry. I'm 7 months out and have lost 110 lbs now. There really is no comparison between the two. Sadly if I were making the choice today I probably would have still gone with the band since the surgery is less invasive but I now know how wrong I would have been. The sleeve as a stand alone procedure was not an option for me in 2007. I also can't tell you how mentally and emotionally I was damaged by feeling like such a failure with the band. You can make a choice now to learn from those of us who had the band first. Read the revision message board here. There are so many of us. For the first time ever I am confident I will get to my goal which is another 42 lbs away. I feel great and my priority now is fill my time with healthy activities rather than unhealthy eating and binging, and believe me you can still binge with the band. I wish you all the best and applaud you for researching before making your final decision.

What Should I Try And Stock Up On?
scubadottie replied to scubadottie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi Everybody, Just a quick question... did anyone have pain around the port area prior to their Revision? I am feeling discomfort (soreness) at that area... I am assuming it is because I have gained weight and my innards are pushing on the port from the inside. Any thoughts? I have lost 5 pounds and have 27 more to go before my surgery in October. Cheers, Dottie -
Several denials... please tell me I still have a chance!
jennifer1 posted a topic in Insurance & Financing
OK so i was initially submitted to insurance for approval(revision from lapband to vsg) in Dec 2016. I was initially denied because they said I didnt have enough documentation stating it was medically necessary to remove my band nor that I had followed up with the post op diet recommendations after my lap band. I went to meet with my surgeon and he submitted more info per BSBS request. Well they denied it again, this time I was told they thought my band was removed in July 2016.. ummmm no this damn thing is still in me. Sooo they submitted again.. so where along the line a peer to peer happened(which no one even told me we were at that stage), apparently that was denied so now it's in the appeal process!!! It's been like 2 weeks and still no answer!!! Has anyone ever had to go through all of this I have BCBSIL???? Please tell me there is light at the end of the tunnel. Has anyone ever done an external appeal? HELP!!!! #tiredofbeingfat #thissucks #i'msofrustrated -
This is interesting for those considering the sleeve....
Guest replied to a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Well, my surgeons do VBG revisions so they can be done, whether to sleeve or bypass, I don't know. But at least one was revised to a sleeve, because she told our LapSF Yahoo! group about it. But this VBG was done with a mesh band around the top, not mesh all over the stomach like WASa is describing. So the rest of the stomach was virgin. It was just top part that had the hole and the mesh band. Dr. J (who did the surgery) took hours, though, because it was such a delicate operation and the first surgeon she contacted said there was nothing that could be done for her so it's not something just anyone can do. But, as I said, she was very close to dying from complications from her VBG, so I think it was worth it to her to take a chance on a leak. This is one reason why people come to the VSG board and say their surgeon is going the sleeve this "new and improved" way where they put a band around the top like a VBG, I say  I just can't see why someone would willing do that, given what we know about the VBG and what happens when you push mesh around the stomach. __________________ Originally posted at www.lapbandtalk.com -
A revision from band to Sleeve
evesta replied to Native Girl's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my band removed Monday and revision to sleeve right after. Surgery altogether was three hours. My surgeon says he rarely does it the other way because it means more time under anesthesia and two recoveries. I'm glad that band is gone. I can already tell the sleeve is more user friendly:) -
Love/hate Relationship, 2.5 Years Post-Surgery
Nicole Sikes replied to CurvyCat's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
This has been my life since I was banded April, 2011. I finally went to my surgeon and said I'm done! We had a long meeting and I discovered what I thought was food getting stuck in the band was not actually making it to the band at all. My esophagus does not like the restriction of the band so when I try to eat it spasms and closes off and I have to throw my food back up. Basically he said the band is not compatible with my body so I am having the revision to the sleeve. This will give me a smooth transition from esophagus to stomach which will calm the spasms. I was unfilled on Weds and I have been able to eat and drink without a hitch! I feel like that might be what's going on with you because you say you get two or three bites down and then you have to vomit or one day something will go down and the next few times you try it, it won't. That was the hardest part for me because I was always scared of not being able to eat when I would sit down to. And more times than not I couldn't. I hope you get yours figured out and find a solution! Good Luck! -

I think a VBG to VSG is a pretty natural operation. You would just be taking out the band and finishing the transection of the stomach. I'd think you could probably revise to a bypass as well, but I'm not sure about the band. That might be trickier because your stomach has a hole in it now. Both of the surgeons at LapSF (where I went) have done VBG to sleeve revisions including at least one I know about that was VERY HAIRY because the band was so embedded into the stomach. But this person was on a liquid diet for over a year beforehand due to problems with her VBG. So it was totally worth it for her. In fact, it probably saved her life. But if you aren't having big problems, I would guess your operation wouldn't be as hairy as hers was. You would still want to go to someone very experienced with revisions, even if you have to travel to find them. Revisions have higher risks so experience is even more important than it is when your stomach is a "virgin." If you do get a VBG to sleeve revision, the aftercare can be handled by your PCP so that shouldn't be an issue. __________________ Originally posted at www.lapbandtalk.com -
Lies to tell people about what surgery I am having

Well you could say your Gall Bladder stump revised. Me , sometimes I can be goofy or a prankster- my last off the wall one I'M HAVING THOSE BUTTERFLIES IN MY STOMACH REMOVED- I can get away with it pretty good, because when you're over 70 who really knows what's in there? Of course I really should have used something like that in 2018 when I Did Have mine. Hindsight is 20/20, you know, but I was so durned glad to receive IT. I simply forgot to be flippant. And that's the TRUTH. -

I've just signed up on VST because I'm thinking about getting a revision from a band to VSG. I find this thread so cute b/c you guys all found each other! That's so exciting that you get to meet each other and then will be able to talk about your experiences on VST! Good luck to you all!!! Very exciting! -
Get the sleeve and show her whats up. Last surgery you will need. I know someone with the band myself and she is definitely going to fail. She eats all wrong. Excuse me for saying this "f**k you Medicaid- you pay for people like this yet I pay over $400/month for BCBS and I couldnt get mine covered at all. Its BS".... Ah thanks I feel better now. Sleeve is absolutely the way to go. No doubt. I was with a band to sleeve revision patient when I had my sleeve done. She lost and regained as well. I talked to alot of others that verified the same thing on their cases as well

Gastric sleeve revision and hernia repair
Chas74 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So, I had my revision on the 11th and I'm at my post op appointment. I just met with the dietician and she sure busted my bubble when she told me not to expect to lose the weight like I did before. I'm going to ask the doctor when he comes in but that was a very discouraging thing to hear. Has anyone else been told this? -
My story--banded for 9.5 years.

Your story is a great example of why the old 4cc band (and other old models) are no longer used in the United States. It makes me incredibly sad that so many people run off to Mexico to save a few bucks, end up with the 4cc band, and have the exact same issues you're having. Thankfully, problems such as yours are rare with the new generation of bigger bands when the patient is compliant with the rules and their surgeon. Good luck with your Sleeve revision. -
patty: What was the population of this country when the founding fathers worked their magic? What was the standard mode of travel? How did they get across great rivers and the great divide? If it were only as simple as you'd like to make it, we'd all be very happy campers. It just is not that simple when there are so many people who comprise such a vast area of land. Problems come up and they must be solved for the good of the state and the good of the people. It absolutely would never get done if we all just chose up sides and donated a few bucks. If you prefer living in a country like you suggest, why don't you find a little island and live there? If you want to be an American, and you want to live here, don't you want it to be better? It won't be better if everyone just decides to stop paying their taxes. And it is disengenuous to say that everything can be run on donations. I get that you resent welfare. I get that you think that there are too many people who depend on it their whole lives. Why don't you get involved in revising the programs instead of just making the claim that they're unfair because you have to help pay for them. Someone also seemed to be suggesting that black people and Indians are primarily the ones on welfare in this country. I think that there are more white people on welfare than any other race in this country but that may depend wholly on which programs you are researching.

A couple questions about pregnancy with the lap band?
goddesscordelia replied to TanksMama's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
I will try to answer some of your questions. I was much farther along, over 2 years out from my original surgery when I got pregnant. So that part is different but the rest applies. Weight loss history. 376 when banded (1/08), down as low as 250 but then in 09 (8/09) my band broke, I regained about 40 and then had revision surgery in 10/09. (Band breakage was not my fault-just really bad luck). Got down to about 265 and then got pregnant (5/10). Now am hovering around 330. (Ugh) I had an "unfill" at about 4 weeks along. It was not total but had the effect of being total-I really did not have enough restriction to stop me from much. I gained about 100 lbs during my pregnancy (just like I did with my first son 9 years earlier). My doc actually wanted to remove a bit less than I asked him to but I had gotten so bloated at the beginning that I could not really even drink much for days so was literally starving when I got my unfill and thus not very rational. It does not have to be completely open, you will have to check with your doctor and OB and preferably have them in agreement with you. I did not slip and have not known anyone who did. I think that they way they put bands in now, by stitching the band to the stomach make is very unlikely for a slip to occur. I vomitted plenty. I did not have any medical complications due to my weight other than my being huge. I had my baby on Jan 31, 2011. The band cord is in a totally different part of your body so the baby does not even get near it let alone get tangled in it (I asked my doc the same question!) I have had a horrible time losing after having my son. I lost 40 lbs in the first 6 weeks and have plateaued since then (it's now been 6 mos). I am terrified of getting a fill because I am loving nursing and am really committed to it and do not want anything to mess that up. So still have not decided about when to get a fill. If I can help in any way-let me know! Good luck! -
4/20/09 Countdown... 5! 4! 3! 2!...
Band_Groupie commented on Band_Groupie's blog entry in The Sweet Spot
Well, I told the boys Sunday that I'm having surgery. I told them it's a stomach issue and that I'll be having laproscopic surgery (explained all that), and I told them I'll be getting some internal stitches...then my white-lie...hiatal hernia. I HATE, HATE, HATE, lying, but I really don't want to tell anyone and with two big family events coming up there's no way it wouldn't have leaked out...if that happened the whole graduation party would be about me and not DD...I'm not willing to risk that, and I don't want to have to defend my position or talk about this now. The boys are comfortable that it's not a big deal and that I only have to stay in the hospital overnight because it's the law here (true). I explained the post-op expectations, soreness, liquid diet, etc. It went well. I called my bariatric coordinator this morning because I noticed the post-op diet I received in class didn't jive with what the NUT gave me. Apparently they just revised it and took off fruit and vegetable juice. So, for the first 2-3 weeks post-op the only calories I'm allowed are broth (almost no cal...but the homemade stuff I made is probably got more nutrients than the canned, thank goodness...thank you Voiceomt2002 for the recipes!), and 3 8oz. glasses of skim milk (how many calories could possibly be in 3C of skim milk...I'll have to look that up). I was about to complain that I'll be fainting on only a few calories a day when she said I can add some very low cal SF powdered drink mix to the milk, like SF Carnation (we still can't find that one, so DH just found me another one). I know I won't be hungry the first week, but I'm going to be starving after that...I know...it's all pay-back for the no pre-op diet. Ahh well, I’m not complaining…yet (LOL). DH and I are going out tonight for our 27th anniversary, since I certainly won't be up to anything but broth on our actual anniversary this Friday. I've been wildly getting things ready today; called my insurance to make sure the home prescriptions are covered (apparently Nexium sometimes isn't covered, but it is on ours), I started packing for the hospital, made a list of info. for DH, scrubbed my body with anti-bacterial soap as instructed, shaved my stomach and I can't tell the difference...my tiny blonde hairs were almost invisible, but now I can say it’s already done when they come at me with the dull dry razor (thanks xavier for cluing me in that it's better to do this at home…and I’m coming after you if I sprout dark stomach hairs this summer), and I drew up my porthole (thanks Lena) picture on paper…those in-the-know will remember I have a choice on my port site, if not read (Spew Alert!!) HERE. I still haven’t come up with whether I need words or not, but I’m a little afraid he won’t get it or think it’s a badly done tattoo and avoid that area completely. I’ll have to do this upside down on myself as DH can’t trace a straight line to save his life. If it turns out badly I’ll scrap the idea, but if I go for it I’ll take a pic for you. Off to finish packing... Countdown...5! 4! 3! 2!...Countdown to BG's Banding!!! -
Hi I am new here. Banded back in July 2002! Had great success until my band slipped! Had revision surgery and have been gaining since...I am so scared. I am up to 149 that is w/dieting and exercising! The end of Jan I was 125 because I could hardly keep anything down. Had a huge unfill to see if my band would self correct. Never happened! I went from 125 to 139 the day of surgery (17 Mar) and since then I have gained 10 lbs. Had a small fill but I can't tell. I am looking for folks who have had experience with slippage surgery and where they able to get the weight off a second time around?
