    gaining weight back

There are bandsters who gain their weight back. Or some of it. And I'm not talking about people who have had to have their band removed due to erosion/slippage/whatever else. Some causes for gaining weight back even while banded: 1) Eating junk food instead of healthy food. 2) liquid & soft calories: make a habit of things like regular venti Frappucinos and Large DQ Blizzards and you'll be gaining in no time. Or that 900 calorie Jamba juice "smoothie". 3) Having your band loosened because of reflux or other issues - now you don't have full restriction anymore 4) Grazing all day instead of eating 3 small meals and a planned snack. 5) Going from regular exercise to no exercise but not cutting calories back to match 6) Emotional eating -- tends to be high-calorie food at non-mealtimes, and unplanned. 7) Drinking with meals, flushing food through the pouch making you able to eat more than you would otherwise. Seriously, a couple years out you may find that you lose motivation; you've lost weight and are feeling much better, so old habits can start to creep in and pretty soon you're 10 lbs up, or 20. Still, if you keep your band adjusted properly you won't gain back weight nearly as fast as without the band. If my doctor were to say something like "everyone gains it back", I would ask for details though, because that's not what the band studies show. How many patients does she have that have the band? How long have they had it? ALL of them gained ALL of their weight back, even with the band still in? How about gastric bypass patients, does she have any of those? etc.

    gaining weight back

Wow! Hockey mom why did you have your bad removed. I've never heard of that. Did they make you? My brother had the bypass 5 years ago and has gained it all back. He said when I was getting my lapband he wished he'd done this instead because once he stretched out his new stomach there was no adjusting it back. That is why I think anyone that says lapband doesn't work doesn't fully understand the difference and is maybe confusing the 2. Would really like to know why you got it removed, I'm concerned now. I thought we had to keep these in for the rest of our life....good to know but so sorry for you that if we don't it's back to the drawing board. Thanks so much for sharing, that really helps me to know I can't do it without the band.
  3. All, I am reeling! I am about 3 weeks post-gastric bypass and am shocked at how extremely depressed I am. I am physically uncomfortable, constantly nauseated, and struggling to find energy to do anything. This surgery has thrown my entire world into disarray. I feel like I need to clarify: I am a chronically optimistic person so I still don't regret the surgery (though sometimes my mind moves in that direction). I am also not even an itsy bitsy bit suicidal. I have a 4 year old and 2 year old and the thought of dying fills me with absolute dread - that dread of leaving my two children alone is a big part of why I had this surgery. My husband has been extremely supportive but suffers from chronic anxiety and depression- he is dealing with his own roller coaster right now. I need to beat this.. quickly. I don't have time for depression and all that jazz. I need tips, tricks, and any bit of mental or physical suggestions that might help me move past this extremely trying experience.

    Revision from sleeve to bypass

I had a revision to RnY from my sleeve after 8 months due to reflux. The reflux is gone. The only downside is I have less restriction now than I had with my sleeve.

To eat or not to eat

There is also a band to sleeve revision forum - an excellent place to hear detailed input on this subject as this forum was intended for vets to discuss vet issues. I was a revision and can share my personal experiences but bottom line - with the sleeve I don't have food restrictions. Sleeve has been for me a good tool, whereas the band was a midevil torture device.
  6. Know that the surgery hurts like hell, and treat it like a bypass, meaning, give up the bad food for good and exercise. You need to be committed to what your about to do. From the start of it change your life. I did and am down 40lbs and feel great.

Lap Band removal for different reasons

I just had my band removed and have to say it was very emotional, since going in didn't expect that it would be coming out. Surgeon wanted to go in and revise the band, but when he got in he found a lot of adhesion of the stomach to pancreas. Plus, I found out by hearing the nurses talking, not from my surgeon. So I'm really in a quandary what to do next as I don't have answers as to what is the long term effect of having my stomach stapled where the separated it from the pancreas. And not sure if there are no long-term effects, whether I trust my surgeon at this point. Still kind of on an emotional roller-coaster but surgery was just two days ago trisha pennreporter

    NYE 2019 surgery date twin?

Steve, so sorry for your pain. I hope it has passed now. Cutebutcrzy - congrats! I hope you are still feeling well. LovingLV, I had my band out in August and my surgeon told me going in he would only do it in two surgeries. Even with the delay my bypass took an extra hour as he had to clean up some scar tissue so waiting is probably for the best. brooksbrittanyanne: congrats! I hope you are feeling well a couple days after your surgery! Feel free to chime in here and share you story with us! Overall my pain has been pretty minimal. I took a small dose of hydrocodone 2 time in the hospital, but the rest of the time I was OK with just Tylenol. I did try to walk every couple of hours. Now that I am home I am definitely feeling the bloat and some related pain. I've got an ice pack on and took a hydocodone which isn't doing much. I'll walk around the house some more to see if that helps it move quicker. My biggest challenge is I didn't sleep much in the hospital - just too much noise and movement. I'm hoping I'm able to sleep tonight.

When you dont have the support

Hey. I looked at your profile and saw that I was only a few months older than you. I can understand how parents can have a big role as a support system, but it is your life. If your mom was supportive of you getting gastric bypass, then she should be OK with you getting the band. Maybe it's because you've backed out of WLS before, and she wants to make sure you're serious about it. My parents aren't thrilled about the surgery, but they understand my weight struggle. My dad has brain cancer, so understandably my WLS surgery and journey aren't much of a priority and is on the back burner in my family. I will be doing this mostly on my own. It might be hard, but it's doable. Just try to explain to your mom how you've tried Weight Watchers 2 times before, and it didn't work. The band has you lose weight the "real way", but you have assistance and something to fall back on so you don't fail along the way. It doesn't do the weight loss for you- you do it on your own.

When you dont have the support

You sound quite young since you are depending on what mom and dad are saying about the surgery. I on the other hand am old enough to know better, I am 58. Before we left New York I was okayed for gastric bypass and did not want that but the band and after going through all the hoops and testing was okayed but backed out at the last minute just before we moved to AZ. I thought at that time that it would be easy to get approval out here when I started working and could get the band. Well, it took another 2 1/2 years before I could get the approval for the band and my Dr. specifically said that gastric was not the answer for me but the band would be better. The Dr. was so right and I am thrilled to be in the position of not being on a diet and at almost 3 years of being at goal, I feel like a million dollars. Go with your heart and the Dr's advice on what is best for you and do it. I wish I had done this when I was young instead of doing the yo yo dieting thing for my whole life. Good luck in your decision and just keep a positive attitude in whatever choice you make.

Hi anyone having surgery April/may from uk

Hi scardycat I had bypass 13th may at portsmouth, op went fine, although they not quiet so well set up here as bariatric in general wards and staff not as knowledgable as could be, ie foods, and tablets, capsules that are and are not allowed. Put weight on in hospital, although just on water for four days. Then went to GP about ten days later and had lost six kilos. Felt good. Then no weight loss since then, although, due to extreme constipation, not eating a thing for eight days.... What's going on. I been strolling, doing jobs around the house, and generally active, but no weight loss....... I been sticking to the rules where food is concerned, a bit scared to do anything else, coz I might spoil everything. ????

    Co Worker JUST SAID WHAT????!!!!

I've gotten some crazy remarks from people, too. I've been very open about my surgery and everyone knows that I've gotten the band. My thoughts were, the more people who know about it, the more I will work to make my weight loss happen. I know it's ultimately for ME, but it's also a good way to keep myself on track. I've had relatives tell me that I was stupid to have the band because everyone they know has gained back their weight. And others think that it's like gastic bypass and when they see me they say, "You don't look any thinner." I just smile and tell them that the band is not a magic wand...I still have to do the work...and I leave it at that. Let them think what they want...they will anyway! Good luck to all of us!!!

    Over 60??

    I'm 68, had bypass 8/6 and doing awesome❤️❤️❤️
  14. As far as how people took the news I was having the band, I didn't have any negativity. I do have one friend, we have been friends forever, and she is in general a negative person, the rest of us just go on, let her bah- humbug everything! I didn't tell her until after and as suspected, she knew it was dangerous, blah blah blah. Needless to say this gal would not weigh 120 pounds soaking wet, never has! Otherwise, everyone was supportive of it, going into the surgery. Since surgery my grouchy Aunt ask me "Are you ever going to lose any weight after spending all that money for surgery?" I told her nope, and went on!!! She on the other hand is bigger than I am...or was! And when she ask me I was already down 30 pounds, and wearing the next size down in clothes, but it wouldn't have mattered, she just wanted to grump!!! As a general rule, people are supportive, when they learn it is not bypass. You say the words, "it's reversible if I have any problems" and they all breath easier! My DH and kids, parents, brother, and inlaws were awesome. They still are, they comment positively on a regular basis. Good Luck to All in this journey! Kat

    Who to tell?

Told only my mom about my lap band back in 2009 and the recent revision to sleeve, but I'm private by nature. Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App
  16. You can read about my revision journey here:
  17. I had my sleeve done in 2013 also and just had revision surgery in August this year. Reason for revision was inflamed esophagus and acid reflux caused with and without eating. I almost died during surgery as my BP dropped into the 50s and went into OR again for internal bleeding. I spent 5 days in ICU. Recovery has been a struggle and I have not returned to work yet. I am still having trouble with my levels and go back to the doctor next week. After my bloodwork results, I am concerned with my frequent diarrhea and pale stool. The gas I’m experiencing is beyond embarrassing!!!

    Jenny Craig

But Jenny Craig's food is atrocious. Our ability to eat is quite limited by the band. That doesn't mean it should become an unpleasant experience. As a longtime WW veteran, I am hard-pressed to see the compatibility with the band. Not that their recommendations are off-base; they'd just require enormous revision to meet the needs of a person with restriction. (Some leaders are really hostile toward those who've had WLS, too.) For someone who does not already have a good idea of how to eat properly---with or without the band---WW would be really hard to self-tailor for banded purposes, IMO. If Jenny Craig personnel have training, that might be a good approach. Well, if the food weren't so gross.

    Slipped Band

I had a possible slip and my treatment was to have it un-filled and let it settle back into place. my symptoms were night time reflux, immediate feeling of throwing up no matter how much I ate and always feeling uncomfortable. I pretty much hated to eat because I felt like crap and it felt like a chore just to eat. after 3 months I had a ct scan to see how the band was and it was back in place. I honestly was hoping for a major slip because I am tired of fighting with my band. if I could I would opt for the old fashioned gastric bypass and be done with the band, I still am having issues and would recommend bypass instead, that's just my opinion.
  20. Hello everyone, I created 2 collages showing how I transformed from very full face to a very tin face. One whole year, of face transformation. Enjoy Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. I think the most difficult part of telling lots of people is that the lap band is not a quick fix. The research says you can loose up to 2 pounds a week but some of us are more like 1/4-1/2 pound a week. I eat very conservatively and exercise up to 2 hours a day; so I am certainly putting in the work. Most people only know bypass so they expect you will loose weight much faster. So you could be loosing at a reasonable rate but people may comment that you are'nt loosing fast enough. This is a life marathon not a sprint.

Hi anyone having surgery April/may from uk

Hi Sparklediva, My op is going to be at Queen Alexandra, Portsmouth Hospitals. Not absolutely sure it will be a bypass, maybe a sleeve, won't know till the last bloods are done. I can't say I'm too stressed about it, they will do what is best for me. Sort of handed that worry over to them. I'm on my second day of my milk diet, just having a treat, a stick of sugar free chewing gum. Is today the day??????

    VLCD

Hello! I'm scheduled for a gastric bypass in the end of November and I've started my pre op diet to lose a few pounds before the surgery. My nutritionist put me on a VLCD with these shakes and soups + some protein and vegetables. Have anyone of you gone through this and have some tips for me? The first few days I was naseous and tired, but now it's kinda ok. What I'm asking is tips and hacks for anyone going through this diet, which is super restrictive and quiet honestly it's gonna be hard to pull this of for the coming 5 weeks. I'm aware that it's also gonna be hard after surgery but I still have the same size stomach so. So do you have any lifesaving tips or recipes or anything? Trouble with Eggs

I am over 4 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery and I eat one scrambled egg for Breakfast each morning. My surgeon's office did not recommend eggs until week 5 post-op. So after week 5, I tried to eat eggs, but it didn't go so well at first. But a few weeks later, they became good.

    How I maintain

I am really happy for you to have put your anorexia/binging issues to bed (I remember your posts from way back). Do you feel that having the sleeve then gastric bypass then a third op going back to having a sleeve has contributed to the issues? I don't see it as a diet at all. I got that word out of my mind soon after surgery. I just follow an eating plan not diet. Diet to me means denying yourself things... eating plan means putting the best foods into your body to get the best health and wellbeing out of it. I don't deny myself anything but I do CHOOSE to eat healthy. Kate
