Weight Loss Since Surgery

Thank you for your posts. I think that creatinglee answered carolyn24seven's question about why Kaiser makes us lose 10% of our weight before they will schedule the surgery. It's tough, but it'll all be worth it in the long run. I was a sugar addict but I've been off the sugar for a few weeks now, so I won't go thru withdrawals after surgery. I AM also learning patience (I think)! Good luck creatinglee. Fremont is a little different. I had my pschyc appt last week and as soon as I've lost my last 5 lbs or so, I just call the surgery scheduler, she then sends my chart to my surgeon and then they call me with the surgery date. That's it. No caseworker involved. Strange, isn't it, that it's the same company (Kaiser No. Cal.) but they work in different ways from one location to the next. Keep my posted, please. I'll do the same.:001_tongue:

For me, I dont go to the gym regularly - but how long you work out depends on intensity. If you're walking on a treadmill and doing a machine weights program, you're going to need an hour and a half to two hours maybe three or four times a week. If you do interval training and heavy free weights, 45 mintues all up would be plenty. I'm a runner, for me the magic number was always an hour (at first about 7kms, now its about 10) and it always seemed that five times a week was vastly more effective than four - usually I try for six. It takes me about that to be able to eat anything I want and maintain. when I go to the gym I usually do a spin class which is an hour long.

Hi Nopatience, Welcome to VST. This is a great website with very helpful people. I really get it about the last five pounds. I'm at Kaiser Richmond. I have what I hoped would be my final pre-surgery weigh in tomorrow morning. Sunday I was 229, great. This morning, 230.6, not so great. I can't believe this is happening. I'm so ready to get to goal and get a case manager appointment so I can get a surgery date. I've eaten very light today and I'm headed down to the gym now to walk as long as my ankle allows (surgery last year). After walking, I'll do the weight machines. I'm determined to be at 230 (with clothes) in the morning. Carolyn, there have been studies that suggest that people that lose 10% of their weight pre-op have less complications post-op. I think that Kaiser really goes with those type of studies. It also makes sure that people are really serious about doing the work both pre and post op. For me, it's given me time to really explore. I thought I wanted the band but discovered in my month before meeting my surgeon that I would only consider the Sleeve. I'm glad I had time to really figure it out and be sure. That said, I want my Sleeve TOMORROW! :001_tongue:

Poop (Literally, and TMI, obviously)

I am like @@1SlimmerMe because I was never regular before surgery and the lack of veggies an addition of Iron supplements made this "difficult". @sonnysun - I called and talked to the nurse and she recommended dropping the iron supplement because my multi already has iron in it. When I did my labs she said they would review my iron level. It was right on track, so I am not taking the extra 27 mg. I have been anemic (iron deficient) for the past 10 years. I guess being religious about my Vitamins has helped that, post WLS, and the fear of losing ALL of my hair! Nurse said I could take Miralax and I take it AS NEEDED. -
Newbie here! Introduction! Looking for support!
Amburmist replied to brennajohnson14's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Good luck! A lot of ur story mirrors my own. Had the lapbad and only lost 30lbs (that was in 2007). Now on Sept 13 2017 (10 yrs later), I had bypass. I thought this was going to finally be the tool to help me. In 1 month since my bypass, I've only lost 12lbs, and 9 of those 12 were lost in the first week post op! So frustrating! Especially with how excited i was to get bypass surgery! I am not trying to discourage you by any means, I just want to put realistic expectations out there for u. All the wonder tales posted here and told in group settings, about 40lbs lost 1st month or 70lbs down in 3 months, stuff like that, isn't necessarily a given. I dont know how they're doing that kind of loss and I'm not, but everybody's different. This procedures gotta help tho, right?! I gotta keep telling myself that. [emoji4] I hope your journey goes better than mine has so far. I wish i could give u advice to ensure urs goes amazingly but I'm following by the book and none too happy, so not sure what advice to give u. Although, the MOST positive thing is that I've had zero postop complications. None. That is fantastic and I'm happy about that part. On a separate note, Valley of the Sun, huh? Awesome! I am here too!! Who's your bypass surgeon, if ur comfortable answering? Mine is Dr Swain, whom I adore! -
5 months out...tortoise or the hare?
kimpossible67 replied to ItsMeAgain's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I learned a lesson one day. I don't drive and I'd walked a mile to the grocery store. I had bags that totaled about 20 lbs. I had half on one side half on the other. 20 lbs mind you. I walked the mile home and thought I was going to die. I didn't walk, I half lumbered/shuffled. My back hurt. It just sucked. So with that to put your weight loss into perspective, go buy 2 10 lb bags of potatoes and walk with them a mile. You'll be amazed how different it makes you feel! -
:clap2: HAPPY 3 MONTH ANNIVERSARY TO ME! :clap2: I'M DOWN A TOTAL OF 38.5 LBS SINCE I BEGAN MY JOURNEY FROM 271LBS TO 232.5 IN 90 DAYS NOW IF I COULD DO THAT FOR THE NEXT 90 DAYS.....OK OK, I'LL SETTLE FOR 10 LBS A MONTH! I'M V CRANKY TO-DAY

HANG IN THERE!! It happens to MOST of us. They don't exactly prepare you for it though, do they? I lost 14 lbs on the liquid phase for 10 days post-op, then I didn't lose a single lb for 3 weeks after that!! It was SOO frustrating because I was really hoping for rapid weight loss, unfortunately it is a longer road because it takes time to get healed, then get your first fill, then sometimes multiple fills until you have restriction... Don't beat yourself up.. we all experience BANDSTER HELL until those fills start kicking in. THINK LONG TERM! GOOD LUCK!!!!! 278/230/180 -
Dr, Liu is also my doctor. I see him in the Orange office. He and his staff are awesome. I had my surgery July 27th, 2007. I have lost 120 pounds...I have 10 lopunds to go and I will have reached my goal weight of 150 pounds. I have reccomeded him to many people.

I had my sleeve revised to RNY 11/10/22 due to GERD. I stayed on fluids/purées/soft foods advancing very slowly. I didn’t start solid foods until end of December (about 6 weeks). Since then I feel like I’m playing Russian Roulette every time I eat. Sometimes I eat and feel fine without pain or restriction. Other times I will eat the same exact thing, same amount and be doubled over in pain until 4-8 hours later when I finally throw up and the food comes up not even partially digested. Every time I freak that I have an obstruction. Nutritionists say it’s too much fiber or too much fat, but it’s not necessarily associated with diarrhea and why, then, can I tolerate it sometimes and others not? Surgeon is sending me in for an upper GI barium study next week. I’m so stressed that I have stretched my pouch somehow but I can sometimes eat far more volume without issue compared to some of these episodes. Has anyone else experienced this? TMI, I’m also noticing pale colored stools but the pain is on the left, not on the right with my gallbladder. He said my gallbladder looked fine during surgery. I just need this to work so I feel better and can get on with my life.

Smokers thats been to their surgeon for consult
dolly_lala posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I am a smoker let me give you some background, I'm 24 i've been smoking on and off since i was 19, i know its unhealthy and i've tried to quit, and just like food its an addiction. I smoked since i was 19, then quit when i was 22 when i found out i was pregnant with my son, picked it back up about a month after I had him, quit 4 months later.....And just recently picked it back up January of this year...Its a battle for me.... What i'm wondering is if the surgeon recommends you quit before surgery, I know theres risk with lung problems after surgery, when i had my galbladder out i smoked and my chest did hurt, but i made myself caugh and breath deep....and used that little blower thing they make you do to practice breathing.... On the other hand i read on a surgeons website if you smoke it can help you show the insurance company that you need the surgery since alot of smokers replace food with cigarettes, which is the case for me, I smoke so i dont eat as much...its a vicious cycle..any advice from those that smoke and has been to their consultation appt. Stopped Losing - Need Encouragement
Lissa replied to BroadwayBaby's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No real tips, because it looks like you're doing things right. However, I wonder if you're not just at a weight where you spent a lot of time before? Also, are your clothes getting looser and are your measurements changing? I've been "stuck" for about 3 weeks, but I know I spent nearly 10 years at the weight I'm at right now, so I expected this plateau. I've been almost literally watching my body change in the last 3 weeks, though. I have lost 2 pants sizes, gained muscle in certain areas and even discovered a couple of bones that I had forgotten about! Just keep working your plan and the weight will come off. I think we're both out of the honeymoon period where it gets tougher to lose weight and we have to work harder...and it sounds like you are working hard! -
Was sleeves may 13 2010 I tried everything nd I mean everything to loose weight before the operation I weighed 240 lbs. I size 18 Now I am half of me I weigh 120 I find it hard to believe it is me but it is I am a size 4 as to date I drink my water and coffee I find it settles food I live in small town and no support system. Family. Was really my support I went from 7 pills a day to none today well a vit on the day I was to be operated on they told me I was a diabetic and I said no. And they said yes I am and that would have ment more pills As I lost weight my energy level is so much more I just ran first 5 k. And I do kettle bells which has toned 10 and half inches And if u find uR self not loosing weight it may be inches instead of lbs good luck to all and yes I would do all over again. Starting to regret my decision...
rhyanon replied to Herraven's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just had my surgery on 9/30/10 too. Having some of the same feelings...OMG what have I done to myself, what if I spent all this money (self pay) and this doesn't work, what will my friends, family think of me then? From what I've read this scary thinking is pretty typical right after surgery. I'm just hoping this too will pass and I will get to my first fill uneventful. One question...my surgeon said he found a small tumor (noncancerous) that he'll need to take care of in 3 - 4 months. :scared2:I have my followup with him on Tuesday to learn more. He said the band placement is fine but eventually the tumor could grow and cause me some problems. Did anyone else experience anything like this? Jesse Jackson Jr. Had A Duodenal Switch
MinaT replied to Sansa's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
To be fair regarding the gastric bypass, I was asked while in the holding room to sign papers regarding my sleeve. One paper was to okay having an "open" gastric sleeve, in case there are difficulties and they could not do it laprascopically. I signed that paper. I was also asked what he should do if he feels that my hernia was too extensive and there was too many problems because of GERD to do a proper sleeve if I want him to close up or perform Gastric Bypass. I signed the papers to allow the Gastric Bypass, if need be. No matter which I ended up with, I promised myself that I was changing my life...forever. Neither surgery is an easy way out. The people that I know that have gained the weight back with Gastric Bypass CAN do a boot camp type regimen and go back to the beginning if they chose to. They should have done this after 10 pounds gain. They should have gone back to the nutritionist. Nobody really needs to have mal-absorption issues with Gastric Bypass. They do because they do not follow the rules, they go ahead and drink beer, diet pop, regular pop, eat breads, spaghetti and they overeat. I believe truly that those that gain weight after Gastric Bypass did it because they chose to use the surgery as a "cure-all" and expected not to have to do the work. Whether you get the sleeve, bypass, you have to do your job. You have to eat properly and exercise. I can't talk about the lap band, because this is the only surgery I would have refused outright because it would be too harmful for me because of my issues with adhesions and the fact I have lupus. I think what most people need to really know before they have surgery is this is permanent and you have to work as hard, or actually harder after surgery than you ever had, because this is a lifestyle, not a diet. -
hard to get in all my liquids
readyforachange38 replied to valentine's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am really struggling to get everything in too. I think yesterday, I had 2 sf jello cups, which took about 40 minutes to finish. I had about 10 oz. of diet decaf tea, 15 oz. of water and about 4 oz. of nsa carnation instant breakfast (I loved them before, but yesterday it tasted gross.) I have something with me constantly, but I just can't seem to get it down fast enough. -
First Stall - less than 2 weeks after surgery???
Apple203 replied to nycgirl18's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Looking back, I see that my stall started on the 7th (Week #3.5), and this morning I weighed the exact same amount (on the 17th -- 10 days later). I've checked in with the measuring tape, and I'm not getting measurable losses there, either. Stalls are demoralizing!!!! The one thing we have to remember is that they are common and they end, eventually. Here's hoping ALL of our stalls end soon!! -
Hello, I have hypothyroid post partial thyroidectomy. I primarily got this surgery to shock my body because it is very hard to loose weight when you have a low thyroid in my opinion. I did find the beginning to be slow and you are still swollen keep in mind. I lost between 2-10 lb per week for the first 6 months. It flew off the next 1.5 years and I hit many many stalls for 2-6 weeks long during that time. Stick to your program and you will see results catch up.

Well, almost! After getting the sleeve on the 13th I head back to work on Wednesday, which just happens to be the day I can start on soft foods and it's my birthday!! I have to say that I had what seems to be a really speedy, successful, and thankfully uneventful recovery. My time in the hospital was fine, I happen to work at the hospital where I had surgery so I had some friendly visitors from colleagues and great care (which I know would have happened no matter what) and I was told all along the way how well I was doing. I had my surgery at 9am on Tuesday and was out around 10. My Dr. said that it went great, that there was minimal bleeding and when I woke up I didn't even have drains in. The PCA pump with my pain meds was a blessing but I didn't use it all that often and I was up and walking that afternoon. I got home on Wednesday after urinating on my own and doing the swallow test to check for leaks. All was well and I was home on my own couch by (everyone else's) dinner time. One thing that was really hard was that I got NO liquids or ice chips my entire stay. I was soo thirsty the whole time so when I got home, sipping juice was fantastic. My first 3 days post op was all juice all the time, 100% juice diluted 1/2 & 1/2 with Water. After that I progressed to Protein shakes and I'm on those until Wednesday. I'm so tired of the sweet shakes so I've been enjoying blended Soups with unflavored powder. I weighed myself the morning of surgery and I was 257.5 and I am now 241 so I'm down 16.5 lbs. in less than 2 weeks. I think that's a good start but I really don't have anything to compare it to- I just know that's better than anything else I've ever done! I'm really looking forward to moving onto the soft foods stage although I'm a little nervous about starting that while I'm back at work. Thankfully the admin I work with had this surgery last year and knows everything I'm going through so I have someone to compare notes to. I am feeling good, happy that I'm almost at the point where I can incorporate some soft healthy foods and I'm actually excited to start planning healthy meals for me and my partner. I'm really enjoying reading everyone's posts and hope to be an active part of this site!

Anyone Have Sensitivity By Cuts
SexySlim replied to kenbr14's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 10 weeks out. Mine aren't really sensitive but there have been two instances while I was asleep I woke up because they were burning. It felt like I was being sliced open. Sent from my iPhone using VST -
I know this probably seems nuts, but I am looking for some reassurance. I was sleeved on 9/23 and by 1 week post-op I was down 10 pounds. (I had lost an additional 25 pounds prior to surgery.) In the past week the scale has not moved and I am freaking out a little. I am eating what I am supposed to (puréed foods and protein shakes) and exercising almost every day, though not as hard I I was pre-op as the incisions are still a bit sore. I read about other people who the weight just seems to be falling off and worry, even though we are all different, I know. Any words of wisdom or reassurance? I am thinking about not weighing every day.
