  1. Totally not a troll... In fact, why would someone lie about what something like that?? The day I left the hospital I was on Full Liquids (clear only in hosp.) Day 8 I went to soft foods. I just started off with the softest things like yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. Then worked my way up to ground meats. I have not once had a bad reaction to anything. I totally agree with @sillykitty, everyone's healing process is different. What works for me may not work for you. Doesn't mean our surgeons don't know what they're doing. My surgeon has a very high success rate so I doubt he'd tell me to do anything that would negatively effect me.

    Why is everything sweet?

As far as soups I've just bought the canned creamed soups (chicken, mushroom etc). I was hoping to hide some unflavored Protein powder in them but there's no way in the world to eat enough soup to waste the powder on, 2-3 small bites and you're full. They don't taste right to me either, maybe something post op. I found the easiest way to get protein in is to mix 1/2 a scoop unjury unflavored (~10gm) to a cup of Oikos zero of my choosing (~15gm). Eating two of those throughout the day is 50gm. My dietary plan allows yogurt during the full/thickened liquid phase. Thanks for this idea. I am four days post op and just can not do the protein drinks. In two days I can have yogurt I'm going to have to get some unflavored protein. Does it make it really thick and gritty? The Unjury powder makes it a little thicker but not much and not gritty at all. When I first tried I used a whole scoop and it was horrid, I don't advise that! =) I eat mine with a fork taking tiny bites and it takes a while to get it all in, but it works. I can't stomach the shakes post op either.

I ate a piece of pizza last night..... And I liked it!

I say this with much love and concern - what were you thinking? I am guessing pizza is not on your NUT's list of approved food. Right now, my concern is for your (new, delicate) sleeve. Please follow your NUT and/or doc's direction with regard to diet. OK - motherly moment over. Addressing your question about "treats". I think, in time, there could be room for treats, but that's down the line - way down the line. And maybe the definition of "treat" is different post-op than it was pre-op. For me a treat was a bowl of ice cream or a trip to Dairy Queen. While I'm hesitant to say I'll never have those again, I know that they aren't an option in my near future. I need to CHOOSE different treats - a treat 5 weeks post op is some cottage cheese with some sugar free syrup or Greek yogurt. Last night you chose to have pizza over the other things you had in your pantry - you could have chosen a Protein shake or something else. This surgery didn't change your want or desire to have food - it changed your ability to have a lot of food. This journey is going to be a lot about choices.

Reno or N. Nevada Bandsters out there???

I had a question for you all. I know the guidelines for what types of food I should be eating week by week, but when did you try more solid foods? When I went in for my post op appoinment last week they told me that I was not eating enough (I have been very tired). I just can't stomach more pudding, yogurt, shakes, or etc. right now.

    Struggling with preop diet

I have a hell of a time trying to go to sleep when my stomach is growling at me. Water will help, but also timing your meals can be really helpful as well! I am not sure what your pre-op diet consists of, but I currently eat roughly 600 calories a day, focusing on protein. For instance, when I get up, I go as long as possible without eating, then I have a protein shake. Roughly 4-5 hours later, I have a can of tuna with mayo & sriracha. After that is highly dependent on when I plan on going to sleep. If my husband and I decide to stay up and watch our shows, I like to snack, so I've pushed my last meal towards that time (which is roughly 200g of fat-free yogurt) so I don't feel like I am going without and so that I don't feel hungry before bed.
  7. I had egg drop soup today...pretty good. My challenge now is some of the medicine I'm taking. One of the pills causes MAJOR heart burn...I've tried taking it first with nothing in stomach, taking it with yogurt or eating...still burns. Going to call doctor as don't like the feeling and want to make sure it's not doing damage. He told me I could continue to take, just need to make sure. Can't wait to test some of her receipes....I laugh because she calls it "porn"....I look everyday to see and now understand her label....LOL
  8. Hello Lisa’s Hope! I was one of your caring supporters during your darkest days when you first lost your husband. It is so good to see your post today! Most importantly—although it might not feel like it to you, you HAVE made tremendous progress in clawing your way back from your devastating loss. I know sometimes I get so tired of people telling me how “resilient” I am. Do you ever feel that way too? But, I personally believe that our lost loved ones want us to honor them in the best way there is, and that is to live out our lives joyfully in peace, and in the present day, not stuck in the past or in what could have been. OK--about your weight regain. YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE! Thousands upon thousands of people who go through far less traumatic experiences than you have REGAIN much more than 38 lbs. Some people LOSE a lot of weight during major emotional trauma. That’s who we are. Emotional humans. It doesn’t make us failures. I just want to share some of my thoughts with you because you've been through so much and I just wish you future happiness and contentment in your WLS life. Your post was really just venting and you didn't really ask for this advice, so I hope you don't find my post offensive. Have you thought about paying more attention to the negative talk you are telling yourself? It can really keep us weighed down (no pun intended) emotionally. Just a couple thoughts as you try to get yourself "Back to Basics:" The FIRST step to reclaim control of your eating habits is to BE KIND TO YOURSELF. The SECOND step is to focus on TODAY’s eating only. Not what happened yesterday. The THIRD step might be to actually sit down and make a written list of the exact foods that you KNOW are the biggest culprits that are most contributing to your weight gain. (This is a tough get-real moment for a lot of us). It might be that you need to go “cold turkey” and totally eliminate these foods until you reach your desired weight. Get them out of the house. Meanwhile, you find some acceptable substitutes for these foods so you don’t feel deprived. (Write the healthy substitute next to the culprit food.) For instance, you mentioned Fudgesicles—maybe find a recipe for frozen Greek yogurt drops. If you are near a Sams Club or Sprouts market, Fresh N Easy, check out Enlightened frozen bars—a satisfying 3.5 oz bar for Cal=80, Fat=2.5g,Carb=15g, Fib=5g, Sug=3g, Pro=9g. The FOURTH step is to be ready to commit to doing what it takes to consume your healthy 3 meals/2 Snacks per day, within your calorie/protein allotment. Do you have good bari recipes? Maybe visit www.theworldaccordingtoeggface.com for starters. Yep, preparing 3 meals and 2 snacks is a lot of work, but we learn to be smart about it by planning ahead, cooking ahead, freezing portions, etc. Makes it almost painless! It is never too late to get rid of your old unhealthy eating habits and create the new, healthy habits and lifestyle that the long-term WLS patients use to maintain their weight. You most likely did not have the time and dedication to establish those good, solid habits back then because you were in the throes of dealing with your husband’s illness. So, now is YOUR time. (Fad) DIETS don’t work! (No disrespect to those who post on here who use the 5:2. I know many of you find it very useful—I’m not calling it “fad”). We had WLS so we don’t have to be on DIETS for the rest of our lives. I've found that the formula for WLS eating is really pretty simple: Use food as fuel and medicine for the body. Our bodys' cells and systems know how to process real, whole foods to keep our health and weight in balance. It does not know what to do with all the processed junk food that we feed it, and the results are very predictable (weight gain; potential for disease). You mentioned that you thought the sleeve would help you for the rest of your life. It does and it will always, and it is sitting there ready to help you. But you have to hold up your end of the bargain for the rest of your life. I’m four years out, and like you, I can definitely eat as much as I could before surgery. Yes, I am surprised about that. Yes, I get hungrier than I thought I would. No, I didn’t think that’s how it would be. But I also know that if I eat junky carbs (sugar), my appetite goes way out of control immediately for days after. So, it’s just plain not worth it to me. It IS a CHOICE that we all ultimately must make for ourselves. Do we want to consciously control our food choices for the rest of our lives—or—don’t we? You can replace your fear, Lisa, with your POWER, and you can begin to practice removing “I can’t” and “if only” from your vocabulary! YOU CAN. Period. I know there are so many people here for you...

    Breakfast Ideas

-Greek yogurt with berries and a couple teaspoons of Special K Protein cereal (can add Protein powder to the yogurt) -Morningstar vegetarian sausage patties with cheese and sometimes SF syrup (a couple of times I've had with half a low-carb English muffin or half a thin bagel but the bread fills me up too much and I can't eat enough protein, so I just stick to the patties) -Morningstar vegetarian meatballs with ricotta, parm cheese, and tomato sauce -Before I was on solids, I liked diet hot chocolate with protein powder -oatmeal with Greek yogurt on top, chia seeds (not eating these yet though), and a little SF jam -Refried or whole Beans with cheese, Greek yogurt and salsa (sounds weird for breakfast but I really like this--you might too if you like your grits savory) -Low-carb/high-protein pancake made from egg whites, protein powder, flax meal. I probably eat the veggie patties the most bc they have 10 g of protein each, so I can almost eat 2 of them or 1.5 with some melted cheese or part of a cheese stick.

What about some Greek yogurt mixed with some sugar free jam??
  11. I feel as i am able to down numerous Protein shakes, yogurt, sugar free pudding, sugar free Jello and popcicles, etc... and while i am full for about 5 minutes, it then just goes straight through me. Cottage cheese seems to help hold me over a little longer. It's been about 3 weeks since surgery and my GI doctor told me to experiment with some foods that i may be able to tolerate. Softer foods, but not liquids. I'm really craving oatmeal. I have sugar free oatmeal packets. Does anything think this is a safe food for me at this point? I'd have to measure it out so i don't go overboard (i LOVE oatmeal) but i think it would really hit the spot and take the hunger off for a while. Anyone try oatmeal at 3 weeks out?? Also, are high Fiber foods bad right now? Filling, low calorie foods are supposed to be good, but i don't want anything that will swell too much and get stuck or cause vomiting. Any food suggestions? Sorry for posting so much guys this is just so new to me, and i am damn sick of yogurt and pudding!!!

  14. Our doc allows only 1 ounce of food per sitting. It doesn't sound like much, but it seems to be the right amount for me. I have been having refried Beans for about a week. It sounds gross but I have been taking the 1 ounce refried beans and mixing it with a small (think baby spoon) spoonful of cottage cheese. Once it heats up, it makes it a little cheesy and helps thin it out a little. I have really enjoyed it and despised cottage cheese pre-surgery. The beans have not made me sick, but I had trouble with eggs. I tried some scrambled egg beaters on Monday night and the doc thinks that is what caused the swelling that landed me back in the hospital on Tuesday (no stricture, just swelling). Another suggestion for you since it sounds like you're willing to try yogurt! I have been in love with Chobani 0% Greek Yogurt (1 ounce) mixed with a spoonful of PB2. Since it is nice and thick it almost tastes like I am eating a spoonful of really soft Peanut Butter. I've tried the one that is like Nutella and it is just as delicious.
  15. I found a different brand (it's organic and actually seemed "better" than PB2) at Vitamin Shoppe. The brand I bought is Just Great Stuff: http://www.bettylousinc.com/products_detail.php?id=287&ref=0 I bought a container of both the Peanut Butter and the chocolate peanut butter. They are both amazing and taste incredible mixed with the plain Greek Yogurt! I've also seen the PB2 on Amazon.

    Protein

@@yescobar Are you logging your food on myfitnesspal.com or their phone app or some other program? MFP is really helpful to see if you are getting in the required amount of Protein, Water, and if you are limiting carbs and getting enough Fiber and whatnot. If you are not, consider getting an account so that you can see if you are getting enough protein every day. The phone app allows you to scan barcodes if you eat something premade like a frozen dinner or a container of yogurt. In regard to your protein powder, if you mix it with soy milk or cows milk, you will get extra protein on top of whatever the unjury has. So, for example, I use Body Fortress. A scoop of it has 30 grams of protein, and an 8 oz glass of milk to make it with, you will have 38 grams in one fell swoop. Also, as an exerciser, you might want to consider your calorie intake. I try to get in close to 1200 - especially on days when I exercise. If you are only eating 500 or 600 calories you will probably need to up your caloric intake to revamp the weight loss. The body gets stingy when you are not eating enough.

Places to get liquid protein samples

I like Body Fortress Whey Isolate Chocolate, its the best I have tried so far. EAS was okay but has a bland chocolate taste that leaves a weird after taste. I also get protein from Cottage Cheese and Yogurt. Next week I can add pureed meats and vegetables, So I can change it up some. This is the easiest thing I have ever did diet wise. The sleeve is absolutely amazing!

    Weight loss halted

Same here. I am 3 weeks tomorrow and the scale has not moved... Well actually UP a little...playing with the same 3 pounds for more than a week. I didn't know this was "normal". Any ideas why? So disheartening. I am just drinking my protein shakes eating Greek yogurt and having soup if I'm out. Feeling like this wasn't worth it. Thank you for sharing!

Anyone From Buffalo, Ny Out There?

I like the GNC Gold Standard Vanilla Ice Cream flavored. It's not too sweet, mixes well, and they have other flavors. The Lean shakes are good also. They come in powder form or four Pk bottles. That brand is a little pricey. Also, try to invest in some sugar free syrups, I.e., Torani, Davinci, etc.. Those are good to flavor your shakes or greek yogurts with. Have a lot of liquids around. Good Luck!
  21. I see you are pre-op so that's a "whole 'nother world" from post WLS. Because, you still have the monkey on your back for portions and addiction to the foods that made us all fat, especially when it comes to eating easy, crap food that tastes delicious and packs a sh*t ton of fat/carb calories with them and the drive thru is a tempting, evil siren. My advice if THIS above scenario is actually your issue, then we all just have to suck it up buttercup and change the way we deal with food. Now, if I'm wrong and instead it's because you have lost your appetite and desire for food as you move toward the WLS outcome, then I sincerely apologize and will help you brainstorm. I second what everyone said about the crockpot and storebought rotisserie chicken especially post WLS, because crockpots are awesome for cooking things in moist heat so they will go down your new tummy better. But if even a crockpot sounds too gruesome for words with work, then you can think of many other pre-made foods from the grocery. I personally think some of them are full of hidden sugars/salts, but there are some jewels that work really well. I tend to eat the same 2-3 things for breakfast and lunch every day. It's easy. It's easy to track in MFP. And I'm not bored by them cuz they are just "expendable meals." I'm busy with work and other daily chores so am not counting on them to speak to my soul, just fuel my body and keep me from going off the deep end with hunger. Breakfast: 1. Omelet or egg scramble with Hillshire Farms Black Forest Ham or pre-cooked turkey sausage crumbles from Jimmy Dean, baby organic spinach/super greens trio, mushrooms, salsa. 2. Cottage Cheese/Greek Yogurt mixture (to keep the carbs down and get probiotics), frozen blueberries, 5g Fiber One Cereal 3. Green smoothie: scoop of banana cream protein powder, 1.5oz frozen chopped spinach, 1oz frozen blueberries, 5g whole psyllium husks, 12oz water, 4-5 ice cubes=blend and drink. (Sometimes I add 6g Vitacost Peanut Butter Slim Powder.) Lunch: 1. Salad + grilled or unbreaded protein (you can get at any drive thru or make your own) 2. Lunch Wrap: Hillshire Farms deli meat, low fat mayo, organic spinach or chopped cabbage, low cal dressing, low carb tortilla 3. Green soup: 2c water, 1 1/2 tsp Better Than Bouillon, 100g chopped frozen greens-your choice, 2 mushrooms sliced, frozen squash or cauliflower (optional), 2oz diced protein (any kind), spices of your choice, hot pepper vinegar. 4. Sardines, mustard, pork skins and grape tomatoes Dinner: You can do anything, but essentially I grill/broil/pan saute a whole package of chicken on the weekend. I cook a lb or 2 of ground meat (turkey, chicken, lean beef, or pork), and usually make a pork loin cuz they are so dayum cheap. Once that is done, I can portion and freeze or leave in the fridge since there's 2 of us. So that's the meat. Once in awhile I will make a pot of chili, meat sauce for "spaghetti," and special soups or stewps then portion and freeze for rainy, non-cooking meals. I keep frozen veggies (broccoli and green beans), fresh veggies: salad stuff, grape tomatoes, avocados, zucchini, yellow squash, mushrooms, onions, asparagus, etc cuz it takes 5 minutes to whip up a couple of servings of veggies at dinner. I keeps sauces either made or bought to add to meat to jazz it up. I keep shiritaki rice and noodles to sub for pasta. Then beyond that I keep string cheese, cheddar, mozzarella, Parmesan on hand along with cottage cheese, yogurt, hard boiled eggs. I keep packets of chicken, tuna, and salmon in the pantry. With all of that stuff, I'm able to get meals together in 10 minutes or less. That keeps me on the weight loss trail and living the dream as I work toward surgery. If you don't want to cook meat, look in the frozen foods at all the grilled basics like: fajita beef, grilled chicken, brisket, pulled pork--just read the labels for added sugar, carbs, and calories. Hope this helps you!

    Whats for dinner tonight?

Gen, it went well! 2 small shrimp and a bite of the yogurt I was full and happy lol
  23. Hi everyone! I am 2.5 years post sleeve surgery my highest weight was about 380lb and I have been fluctuating between 188-198 lb the last year. Old habits are creeping in and my surgeon has placed me on a new diet to try and reach the 180 lb goal she set for me. It is embarrassing to say I am that close but yet so far away. I find the old habits creeping in whether its dessert after dinner like the kids have, or sneaking a sweet at the store. I should be consuming 3 protein bars per day, dinner around 6p and a Greek yogurt at 9p before I leave for my night shift. I have always struggled with water intake and get about 50 oz. Of overall liquids per day normally coffee, tea, vitamin water zero, and water with crystal light. I work 72 hrs per week and attend nursing school so I am beyond busy and never stick to an exercise regimen because I am so tired. I could spit out many excuses but I blame myself for the poor eating choices. I have found since about 18 months post OP I have excessive hunger that no matter what I do I feel starving even 15 min after dinner. I drink water and it never satisfies the feeling of hunger. I am going back to see the surgeon again next week, but I just feel so overwhelmed and disappointed in why I am steering off my weight loss path. Any ideas of how to get back on track and get rid of this hunger? Thanks everyone.

Help! Ate too much! Pain in the middle.

Hi everyone. Just saw the Bariatric program nurse and we were troubleshooting what happened. She feels that even light mayo is too much fat to tolerate at the purée stage for some. She recommended using fat free plain yogurt instead. We discussed how not having good coping mechanisms for stress led me to seek out pleasure from food and take in more then was appropriate. I’ve had stress with my mother, my daughter and my dog this past week and my normal way to deal is to devour something rich and put myself in a food coma. Because I tried to use my old method with my teeny stomach pouch I caused a bolus of food to get stuck. In some ways I wonder if I did this so I could get everyone to get off my back this week. Not consciously but maybe a self sabotage so everyone would have to fend for themselves. I see it now but I didn’t see it then. I’ve got to stay self-aware while eating. This was too traumatic of an experience to repeat.
  25. I was about where you are 4 days ago, but today is my 15th day post-op and I turned a corner (thankfully)! I feel amazing today, minimal pain and it's the last day I have be on clear liquids. It was also my first day back to work! I'm not sure if you are on clear or full liquids? Clear liquids-drink broth, protein shakes made with water, Isopure, SF/no carb Jello, SF/no-carb popsicles. Full liquids-Drink protein with almond or skim milk (Syntrax nectar is my favorite protein-no carbs, mixes well with water or milks), low-fat creamy soups (such as low fat/low carb butternut squash soup or tomato soup or cream of broccoli soup with the chunks strained out). I use Ideal Protein or Barwise products, but you can also make your own from scratch if you have time. Soft foods phase-eat scrambled eggs or tofu, low-fat cottage cheese, low-fat SF yogurt (use Fage Greek fat free for optimal protein with low carbs). Eat only 2 oz at a time. Do not drink 30 minutes before or after you eat to train yourself to eat slowly and fill on 2 oz. If you drink while you eat, you will eat more than you should and can stretch your stomach which will ultimately lead to slowed or stopped weight loss. Eventually this will become weight gain. Phase 4-lifelong phase is food you can tolerate, only 2 oz at a time, chew/chew/chew! No beverage 30 minutes before and after eating. Set a timer on your phone to help you. Journal everything you eat to hold yourself accountable. Please let me know if you want me to email you my post-op eating plan. All the best to you! It will get better and suddenly you will feel amazing! Thank you so much for all of the information, yes please if you don't mind emailing it to me I would appreciate it.
