Hey Everyone: Sorry I've been out of commission. Had some surgical complications and in the hospital the past few days here in Columbus (wish so much I could have made them transfer me or something down to Dr. Sch). Things are better and I'm on the soft food phase. AnnieM and Nurse T: Thanks for the Protein drink suggestions. I'm now on eggs and yogurts so I should be able to avoid the supplements. I like the regular supplements (higher sugars) and my dietician said I can have them since I'm taking in such little nutrition right now. Barbara: So sorry about the heart fiasco. I'm so glad everything is okay. I would love to meet on Monday. How about 12:45p at a restaurant of your choosing near Dr. Sch's office? I have to leave Dayton no later than 2:45 for a 4p appt in Columbus. I'm really glad you chose to check things out with your heart. Email me: mindfulpea@yahoo.com Lisann: Glad you are getting back on track with the grazing. I'm still on such little intake that grazing is a good thing for me just to get some calories in. But, if you want to personally email me for accountability, please feel free (i.e. the number of times one day versus another) and I'll give you lots of encouragement (see above email). How did the tile job end? Impersons: I just want to keep encouraging you. Hey, look - the month is already half over! I'll be thinking of you as Feb arrives! DiscoDiva: Welcome to Ohio. I absolutely love Dr. S. He did steri-strips on me with internal (dissolve-type) sutures, not staples. For the band, I've not heard of anyone who uses staples because the incisions are so small. Oh Rain Tree - Where are you? We miss you! I'll probably be coming to the support group next month. I'm still trying to find one that is for band patients only. I'm a little frustrated that "we" get lumped into one group when the struggles and diets are radically different. I am just not sure I want to drive all the way to Dayton for a mixed group. There is a group here in Columbus that focuses on the emotions around eating that is free, sponsored thru the Center for Eating Disorders that I've been going to and I like it so far. Maybe as soon as my schedule settles, I'll start one for band only, one where you can come from any practice. Cincy Weight Loss has one but they won't allow people they didn't cut in - Okay, well talk later! Paige

STARVING! Liquid pre-op diet....
scstxrn replied to TNchick's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you HAVE to eat, you can always make sugar free Jello. It is a clear liquid. You can also mix clear Knox Gelatin with your Protein drink.. Directions are on the Knox box.. To make jello. You can freeze them to make Popsicles or fudgesicles and, if your doc allows yogurt, mix chocolate powder in to make pudding. Shave ice, add Liquid Protein to make a slushy or snowball. -
TMI, but concerned about bowel movements
ShoppGirl replied to ShoppGirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Okay so I just found something that may help me and others in the purée stage with getting fiber. Oikos yogurt has 3g per serving. I don’t love Greek yogurt but I checked mine and it has none (my husband had the Greek stuff and he pointed it out) so I added a packet of Splenda and it’s isn’t super horrible that way. Tastes better than milk of magnesia. I read that we should try to get 5G per 1000 calories so I am gonna try to get one of those in a day and hopefully that will help. -
I'm getting sleeved Tuesday and have a questions about yogurt in a post-op diet. For those without chunks of fruit, I like lemon and lime - are they more acidic (could they cause more trouble than other flavors)?

May 28-31st Sleeve Week!
WhoKnows replied to lylabelle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, after being cut on the 28th, I'm home now! I was discharged yesterday and I feel pretty good. Incisions still suck, but I'm able to get in all my liquids and I can do purees. I'm getting way sick of Protein drinks though; some other people mentioned being fed up with sweet stuff, and I hear that! All I want is something savory. My last day in the hospital they gave me mashed potatoes and it was truly awesome. Of course, that's not the sort of thing I'll be making for myself at home, but it was nice! And @@hrhlaurie, you're not the only one who didn't get a leak test. My surgeon said he does the one while before they stitch you up, but doesn't do a swallow test because of the two leaks he's ever seen, one happened too soon to be caught by the test and the other happened too late, so he just doesn't see the point. Fair enough I guess. I mean, I wouldn't have minded doing one, but I trust his judgement, and since I'm feeling so good (relatively speaking), I think I'll know if something is wrong. I also had my first BM today (yay for bathroom talk!). It was teeny tiny, which doesn't surprise me, since I've eaten probably less than 1/4 cup of actual food since Tuesday. But today all I want is something savory and not made from instant powders like at the hospital! So, I'm gonna make some black bean Soup and puree it, then mix in some pumpkin seed protein, and instead of sour cream I'll do a dollop of quark (something common here in Germany that is sort of like Greek Yogurt, and tend to be eaten on potatoes; also very high in protein and low in fat). My surgeon said for now I can eat about three tablespoons at once, so I'll just freeze the rest in ice cube trays, and I should be set for food for a while, even if I half the recipe. I'm gonna save a bundle on food! -
Feeling like a failure

Eggs were too much in the first few weeks. Even now they can be too heavy. So I did egg whites in soft food stage. The whole liquid and soft food stages just suck. I tried to eat certain foods and had the slime and throw up. Nothing fancy but some foods seem like they will be soft and the sleeve says no. Keep it boring. Greek yogurt, soups, refried beans and ricotta cheese. It's so hard. I'm six or seven months now and yogurt, fruit and salads are my favorite. -
Ranch dressing...never again!
MrsRoboto replied to lucky1gg33's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you tried the Bolthouse Farms Ranch? It's a yogurt dressing and it is SO good. A much better choice than regular ranch, you get more bang for your buck. -

I baked 4 split chicken breast today. Topped with garlic and pepper. After dividing into 3 ounce portions. I have twelve meals. I froze some for next week. One 3 ounce portion filled me up. Hopefully, the next two weeks will fly by. I have my chicken, green vegetable, Greek yogurt, hard boiled eggs and protein shakes all on hand. I'm taking my vitamins and my juice plus chewables that my surgeon wants me to take. -
Dishes/utensils... recommendations?
Stacy160 replied to CraftyChristie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The only thing I bought special were two little plastic condiment dishes from Walmart. They hold just about a half-cup of stuff, so now I use them for cottage cheese and yogurt, when using a regular bowl would be ridiculous. Otherwise, I have these really pretty ceramic salad plates that I've always loved and never had much use for, that I use all the time now, and I just use a salad fork and small teaspoon. just remembering to full up just the tip and not the whole thing. -

Any Boston, Ma Gastric Sleevers Out There?
Boston George replied to Tarada9's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
hello November sleevers!! as som of you know I was sleeved Monday. was relapsed yesterday. The surgery was textbook. I woke in recovery in some pain, more discomfort than anything else. Very sore. I woke up in my room that night with vicious dry mouth. Every time I tried to move it was so uncomfortable. For a brief moment laying in my bed a couple hours after surgery I asked "why did I do this" Then a wonderful nurse realized I was uncomfortable. She got me a cold sponge lolly pop to use on my lips and tongue. That, mixed with painkillers I received I began to change my tune :-) I woke up the day after surgery feeling better. Went for the leak test and passed. I was so happy bout that. Then they removed my catheter (guys worst nightmare) After said catheter was removed life got a whole lot better. Because I passed my leak test I was able to have water and diet juice or decaf coffee and tea. Even ate some yogurt. I was feeling much better at this point. Still sore of course, I mean I just had major surgery. I tried to fight the pain meds and that was my biggest mistake. I don't everyone to think I was excruciating pain, it was more discomfort from the gas pains and Soreness from the incision sites and external drain. Side note : Dr Kim is a brilliant surgeon. I honestly believe she is at the top of her field . My incisions sites look like tiny scratches, they are so clean and are healing incredibly. I want to take another minute to acknowledge her personality and her bedside manner. She made time to see me personally 4 times after surgery. With her hectic scheduled that meant alot. She explained my leak test In detail to me and my mom. She explained that when I woke up it wouldnt be pain so much as a pressure in your chest. Boy was she right! So after Getty some fluids in I started to feel much better. I went for a few walks with a physical therapist that actually made me feel better, to be up and moving. They bring an assortment of bariatric fluids to your room 3 times a day, to see which one you can tolerate. Plain yogurt never tasted so good! The I had my drain taking out after realizing I was healing properly. I was able to take a shower after the -
Well, the diet I was given only says soups, yogurts, and fresh fruit juices. Is that really what I'm supposed to eat for a week?? I was thinking about making some kind of protein shake or carnation breakfast shake or something for in the morning, soup with a yogurt for lunch and dinner, maybe pudding and jello for snacks in between?
-
I was just thinking that I would never have done this yogurt and cottage cheese diet as a "diet". It is hard and crazy!!! In all the diets I have tried, very few were of this nature (like the cabbage Soup one or grapefruit diet). I always counted calories or WW etc. I am only doing this for the band. (but the weight loss side effect will be nice)

Neil, 3 months out with a 62 pound loss! That's amazing! Being a vegetarian in America will definitely be much easier than in India. There is a larger variety of Protein options available to you. Natural, low fat cheeses, greek yogurt, low fat milk, powdered Peanut Butter, protein powders, nuts, and soy products. All these items are staples you should have in your house, to provide yourself with daily variety! I'm in California. Good luck to you!

Protein Shake Recipe I REALLY like
JessterNC posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been trying to find a Protein shake that didn't taste like a Protein Shake and I think my wife has hit the nail on the head! She knows I like Peanut Butter and chocolate is good with so much! So she created this for me. I just had a serving and it is soo good. 5 oz container of Danon Light n Fit Toasted Coconut Greek Yogurt 5 oz of low fat milk 3 tablespoons of Jiff Peanut powder 1 Scoop chocolate Protein Powder 4 ice cubes 4 oz serving has 22 grams of protein It may not be to everyone's liking, but it hits the spot for me. Good luck to everyone and I hope you all have a wonderful day! -
Freaking out...just a little. Help.
cinderella8 replied to cinderella8's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For Breakfast I might have 4 ounces chicken salad, a scrambled egg with 2 slices turkey bacon or 2 low fat bomber cheeses. lunch might be a boca burger with a carrot and some cucumber or 4 ounces of turkey breast and a slice of Swiss with mustard. dinner might be 4 ounces salmon or cod with veggies. Or chicken breast the only carbs I'm eating are yogurt on occasion or skim milk in iced coffee. I will also have s Protein bar or shake occasionally for a snack. Ideas from a fellow Ice cream addict: 1)ADD FRUIT: What i used to do was to add fruit to the ice cream... strawberries or other berries, bananas, etc. That gives you bulk so that you can't fit that much in your pouch. I found that with fruit, I'd be totally stuffed if I had a kiddie sized cup. 2)DON'T HAVE IT IN THE HOUSE: Make yourself go out for it...and when you do, vow to only order the small or kiddie size. AS an added incentive, give yourself some other goal to achieve before you can treat yourself... like xyz minutes of cardio or weights, must have drunk xyz oz of Water, etc. 3)BUY INDIVIDUAL PORTIONS: My biggest problem was the never-ending pint. I'd eat the whole pint. But if I bought some form of ice cream bar or novelty, there was more acknowledgment of what a healthful/normal serving was. I knew I was on my second or third serving when I went back to the fridge...whereas with the pint, before I knew it, my spoon was scraping the bottom. 4)EAT IT CONSCIOUSLY: No Tv, no radio, no distractions. Try using a baby spoon (can buy a gazillion plastic ones for like $2). Savor it. You may find that you don't even like it (really!)... or that you prefer different flavors, lower fat versions, whatever. gaiam.com has a conscious eating set with meditations and cards... might be helpful 4)TRY LOW-FAT: Haagen-Dazs, Edy's/Dreyer's Slow-Churned Low-Fat versions, Ben & Jerry's Frozen Yogurt/Low Fat (Body & Soul?)... all are really yummy. If you combine them with fruit, it's actually a pretty healthful treat. You could have a 1/2 cup of low-fat ice cream/yogurt with 1/2 cup of berries and you'd be out about 160 calories or so.

Getting in the protein?
LillyRoad replied to pupichupi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I make a smoothie with a cup of plain Greek yogurt, 1/2 scoop unflavored GNC protein powder, frozen strawberries and diet cran-grape juice. Sometimes a splash of lemon or lime juice. I make them and put them in my freezer. Take them out and eat with a spoon as it thaws. I make it in the magic bullet mugs and one mug has over 30 grams of protein. I do 2 a day and they it's easy to get the rest with food. I love the quest bars too. I keep one or two in my purse all the time. -
Getting in the protein?
Baconville replied to pupichupi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The first few weeks I used a lot of unjury unflavored Protein powder in nearly everything I ate to add protein to it. I added a 1/2 scoop to Greek Yogurt, mashed potatoes, and Soup. It does get easier. Although I still rely on one Protein shake every day to meet my protein goal. Fortunately, my pouch likes protein shakes! Beleive me, it is all worth it in the end! -
Getting in the protein?
pupichupi replied to pupichupi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey Cody, I tried the half water half milk thing and it still doesn't agree with my stomach? I am going to go to GNC and get that one that everyone has been telling me about the Isopure, and see if that agrees? I really hate that I can't drink the Protein drinks as I like them specially the way I used to make them with the chocolate and i would add Peanut Butter to it, yummy!!! I do eat alot of the greek yogurts, and I have egg whites for Breakfast, so those are really good sources of protein so I will stick to doing that but we will see what else I can do? -
Started my liquid diet today - I am miserable. I work 9 hour shifts on my feet 5 days a week, and after today, I am light headed and completely impatient. Makes me wonder how many people in customer service who are cranky and just annoyed and short with everyone are on this damn diet!! I've had Water all day, 3 Protein shakes - each of different variety, and 3 yogurts - also different brands. At a total of 780 calories, I feel I have eaten far from enough, and I feel sick to my stomach. I'm re-tasting the shakes, and just totally turned off of everything. How am I going to get the protein and calories I need, by also feeling full and not like I'm starving myself all day? If I stick to the Protein Shakes and yogurt, I'm gonna hate them really soon. Help!!! Feeling weak physically and mentally.

6 Weeks Out, Total Of 84 Lbs Down...
eazye replied to eazye's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Janette, I eat a lot of greek yogurt, favorite is apple cinnamon Chobani yogurt, lots of string cheese for Snacks, a handful of goldfish cracker in the evening for my evening shack after getting my daily Protein. I think you get just over 100 calories in those and there are something like 50-60 in a serving. I dont eat that many because being a cracker, they fill me up. I will sometimes have chili for lunch, maybe 4 oz of grilled turkey breast, or chicken, or even a plain hamburger patty with mustard or A1. With the hamburger, I do need to avoid the healthier lean ground beef becasue it sits in my stomach like a rock and isnt comfortable. I do eat a very small portion of a sweet item sometimes (ice cream, cookie, muffin, etc...) but they are limited and I never eat the whole thing. I find the diet very easy becasue I am not a person who requires a lot of diversity in my meals, I could eat the same thing every meal and be content. My general daily diet is Yogurt for Breakfast, 2x string cheese for morning snack, yogurt or a high protein food from my work cafeteria for lunch, a Protein Bar later in the afternoon, then some type of meat or a yogurt for dinner (depending on if I had a yogurt for lunch), then something small later in the evening if I feel like it. Gets my protein, keeps me full, and keeps me losing weight. I feel great so it must not be too bad of a diet....oh, plus my required Vitamins.... -
Thanks for that suggestion . When I left the hospital they did give me some stuff for constipation if needed . So far I am on yogurt and soup no pain !
