food restrictions are temporary. After awhile, you'll be able to enjoy the foods you do now, just in smaller quantities (and for some food items, just as an occasional treat). I didn't really have "food funerals" beforehand, but I did go out to eat a couple of times the week before my pre-op diet to have a couple of things that I knew I wouldn't be able to have again for a few months. I didn't overdo it, though.

Celebrations after Surgery
ShoppGirl replied to KimA-GA's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I find that I can participate in the major holidays with a small portion if I am reasonable. By that I mean don’t celebrate ALL day, just the one plate at the dinner or event and no leftovers later. And I mean truly only the major holidays as in I only celebrate my own birthday with food not everyone else’s and not every graduation or baby shower, wedding, etc. i basically try to keep it to once a month or less that I eat off plan whether that’s a holiday or not because it’s too easy to find an excuse if you partake in everyone’s celebrations you could be doing it every week and that can get you in trouble. One job I had did what was called a “life celebration” once a month on the first workday of the month and that was to celebrate everything happening that month whether it was someone’s retirement, bday, or an actual holiday like thanksgiving, etc. everyone brought in food and treats that one day and some were holiday themed and others bday theme or whatever applied and most people would choose a plate of food and one treat and be done with it. That would’ve worked out well for us post surgery. as for excuses for the events I don’t want to partake in, I usually either say i just ate, my stomach hasn’t been really feeling that great today or I am not a big fan of seafood or carrot cake or whatever it is. If it’s at work and they will see you eating your own food you could go with I’m dieting or I’ve had some medical issues and I’ve been working with a nutritionist and I can’t have it. I find that people like to hear that it looks delicious and you’d love to have it but your not allowed. And if they press just say no I’ve been bad too much lately or something like that. I love the idea of I’d love to take some home to have later if you don’t mind. You can offer it to someone at home who doesn’t struggle with weight or just toss it. Most people just want to think their hard work is being enjoyed and most likely don’t care when. -
My pre op liver shrink diet was 3 weeks. I had lots of food funerals before that started and I am so glad I did. I didnt need to loose any weight to get my surgery as some do.
-
You just have to get through it - make sure you finish all the preop stuff in time so you don't get delayed. You will likely have to do a pre-surgery liver shrinking diet which, depending on your doctor, might be all liquids or otherwise very restrictive, which will suck. Some do 1 week, some do 2 weeks (I had to do 2 weeks which was not fun). I think I saw one poster say once they only had to do 3 days. Whatever it is, just keep thinking towards post-surgery and how much your life will change. Good luck!

Any September Sleeve buddies out there
TanyaF posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had the sleeve done on 9/8/2022. So i am just a little over a week out. I am starting to feel better, but I am STARVING. I am just drinking the protein stuff I am suppose to , water, and the protein soup. I have another week before I can be on soft foods. Also wondering if I can have a marijuana edible. I do not smoke, but would like to have a relaxing edible. Am I suppose to be hungry after this surgery? I though it was to shrink your stomach and appetite? -

The lentil stew I made for my work lunches this week. 1tbsp oil. 1 onion, 4-6 stalks celery, 2 large carrots 2 yellow bell peppers- all diced. garlic minced (measure with your heart). Cumin, ground coriander, curry powder, ground turmeric, pepper, bay leaf, 2 cups red lentils, 4-6 cups broth. Salt to taste. Add oil to large pot over medium high heat. Add diced veggies and sauté 2-3 minutes. Add garlic and sauté 1-2 minutes. Add spices and cook another 2 minutes. Add lentils and stir to coat with spices. Add broth and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook about 15-20 minutes. -
i transitioned to my pre op diet in august. Mine is 50 carbs a day (total, not net). I knew with my eating disorder issues I needed to slide slower in it so I would not backlash into binging so I transitioned down over a couple weeks. Been about three weeks at 50 carbs a day (ok, had about two days that i did less than 75) and it’s going well. I can eat a wide variety of things to keep it interesting. Early on i was ravenously hungry despite eating plenty but my brother (who has done keto before) told me to up my fat content and the hunger disappeared. I totally miss some foods, but not a lot. Beans used to be a big part of my diet and they are too carb filled for now. Rice, pasta/noodles and tortillas were also staples and are now not good choices. And most fruit is very carb filled, but occasionally I will carb budget for a lovely apple which tastes so sweet now. I had already cut out most bread so that wasn’t a big deal. following the diet I have lost 18.6 lbs in three weeks (69.6 in 2022 total) … so worth the shift in eating!

Booked for 4th October and pre-op in a week, huge step for me. How are others coping with the liver-reduction diet?

Starting my journey - Advice
summerseeker replied to Ella97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello Ella97, there are a few of us here from the Uk and I personally have found this forum really helpful. There is always some one on this forum who has the same little niggle that you are struggling with and a kind word with a suggestion to ease the worry. As you have been advised, a 3 week break is a good time to have the surgery. In the UK we have different regimes pre surgery, than in the USA and we do not have the counselling or psych services that are the norm over there. Pre surgery, I read a lot of the back pages of this forum, I gained so much knowledge and just knowing that I could be posting before and after photo's like others on the site in only 6 moths to a year really spurred this old girl on. Just imagine how wonderful you will look next summer ! -
insurance frustration
summerseeker replied to KimA-GA's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh yes but not via insurance. I had to pay for my surgery in a private hospital as everywhere in the UK was swamped with Covid cases and all surgeries were put back and non essential surgery was stopped altogether. The hospital had its bariatric services audited and the surgeon then had a holiday which all put my surgery back at least 2 months. For a few weeks I felt like I was unjustly punished, the ' why me ' syndrome kicked in. I was so upset. Then I got over it, what else can you do ? The days dragged by and then I was into the 3 week pre op diet so they dragged even more but I got there in the end. If your part of the world is into winter when you have the surgery, be ready, You may feel really cold, I did. Even in the house I needed lots of layers. I hope you get it sorted soon -
Just had the sleeve done Sept 12th
summerseeker replied to Mlewis87's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello and welcome to the forum. We all had a terrible first few weeks after the surgery. There are so many new things to fit into a day. Drinks, tablets, walking and so much resting and snoozing. Its so much but it does get better at about a month out. What are you anxious about mostly ? We will have the answers and helpful tips you need at the moment. -

Sip your water CONSTANTLY! Don’t allow yourself to get dehydrated. If you do, (I did) then call your doctor and they’ll arrange for you to get some IV fluids. Don’t worry so much about hitting your protein goals for the first few days. Just keep drinking. Start incorporating some bone broth and protein waters. (My fave is the blue Protein2O.) Walk some to get the gas they fill you with to move! Take chewable GasX. After about two weeks start your chewable vitamins (I take Barimelts. Multivitamin with iron, B12, Biotin, and Probiotic.) Add in Zinc along with your Biotin to avoid hair loss. Take Senekot to help with constipation. I’m trying to think of anything else I do….. I hope this helps!! 😁👍🏻 -
Hunger crushed and taste change
Arabesque replied to GreatDanish916's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Losing your hunger &/or being disinterested in eating is one of the benefits of the surgery but it doesn’t happen for everyone. And it doesn’t last forever - up to a year give or take. The other benefit is learning the difference between real hunger & head hunger. Real hunger feels different. I get restless, know something is wrong, don’t crave a food, flavour or texture, there isn’t an emotional side to the hunger (e.g. hangry) & there is always a logical reason I feel hungry i.e. missed a meal for whatever reason. Three years out, I still have times I’m not really hungry or hungry not hungry. Wish they occurred more often of course. The change to your taste buds & sometimes sense of smell is temporary too. A few weeks to a month or so & it will start to come back. It is a good opportunity to break your desire for certain flavours or foods though - I broke a lot of my desire for sweet then. -
Stall/concerns post sleeve to bypass revision
catwoman7 replied to lex2287's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
14 lbs in two weeks is excellent. I lost 16 lbs the whole first month! (not a revision - I have a virgin bypass). people tend to lose slower after revisions than they do a virgin surgery - but again, 14 lbs is quite a lot. I wouldn't throw in the towel yet... -
Hello, Oct 3 is myGastric bypass . Need a surgery buddy to help each other out if possible. I’m on a 3 week liquid diet due to my high BMI before surgery. It’s tough everywhere you turn around are temptation. Just need to keep the final results in my head.

Stall/concerns post sleeve to bypass revision
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to lex2287's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
You're welcome! 🤗 I got my band in 2013, and within a year or so I hit my lowest weight and I got stuck about ten pounds above that number. For years I was stuck. I gained about another ten back after GERD, and I thought that I wouldn't be able to lose anymore weight either. But it's coming off. And as far as not feeling restriction... I feel/felt the same way, but this week I started eating grilled chicken again for the first time since before the revision, and now I feel soooo much restriction. My surgeon told me that I have some nerve damage from the band and that's why I wasn't feeling restriction. But I can definitely feel it now as I'm able to eat denser proteins. Previously I was still eating a lot of chicken that I made in the crockpot, so it was a softer consistency. I think you will notice more restriction once you're fully healed. You're early out still. Give it some time and just follow your surgeons eating plan and track your protein and water. You got this! Best wishes! -
Stall/concerns post sleeve to bypass revision
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to lex2287's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had band to bypass revision on July 19, for GERD. There's plenty of people on here who have revised to bypass that lost additional weight and are now at a normal or near normal BMI. So I don't understand why your doctor said that. But I do understand everyones medical situation is unique. But don't give up yet, because you're still early in the game. The first month or so I felt similar to you. Wasn't losing much at all and wondering if I would lose. This was a fear of mine since I made the decision to revise. I'm eight weeks out now and I've lost thirty-five pounds. Not as fast of weight loss as those with a virgin bypass or those with a higher BMI, but I am still losing. So just follow your program and wait until you're fully healed and then you will probably see more pounds coming off. One thing I will add, when the scale wasn't moving in the first month, I was definitely losing inches. Have you noticed your clothes getting bigger? Because that's still a loss. The scale will catch up. -
Stall/concerns post sleeve to bypass revision
lex2287 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had sleeve to bypass revision on Aug 29. I have only lost 14 lbs. I had the revision due to severe reflux.. my dr told me he doubted I would lose anymore than I already have at my follow up Monday. It was really discouraging. I have about 80 lbs to lose and hearing I probably wouldn’t lose more with this surgery was a blow. I have been getting my fluids and proteins in with no issues. I don’t feel like I have restriction either. The scale hasn’t budged since I was 1 week post op. My concerns were shrugged off at my drs office and I didn’t know where else to turn. Can someone give me some insight or point me in another direction? I need this additional weight off too :( help. -
Great to read everyone’s updates! I’m doing wonderfully. I am the happiest I have been for years and I feel great in my skin. I don’t know my weight but a few weeks ago I was at 199 (215 pre op) which I am delighted with. I know from my clothes it is still coming off but I am working through a bunch of issues with the scale so I’m not weighing myself. I’m also super lazy and I am sure it would be coming off quicker if I actually worked out once in a while. Note that I eat three times as many carbs as my dietician recommends and I eat significantly more calories than I need to survive. I am content to gauge and eat when I am hungry and as an ED survivor that is a huge win in itself. I’m not in a hurry. I’m cooking almost everything from scratch and it’s delicious. I can eat about 3/4 cup to a cup depending on consistency. No heartburn or any other adverse issues, and I stopped omeprazole two weeks after surgery. I consider myself very fortunate. My main reason for the revision was so I could eat dense foods that would just come right back up with the band. I am so grateful to take a big bite of anything and I feel a wonderful freedom with that. cay

August surgery buddies!
LookingForward22 replied to Connie88's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m with you. I just had my appointment today and was so stressed that I was going to get lectured or my team would think the same things. I have about 150 more pounds to loose (at least) - so I was expecting to have lost at least 30 this month. It was just a goal I set for myself, but I really thought I could do it. After loosing about 23 pounds the first 7-10 days, I thought I’m so going to crush this…. Then a stall hit. My period came back (had it three out of the last 4 weeks) and I’ve been beyond drained. Turns out my BP was low and I’m mildly dehydrated. I kept saying “if I could do more I’d loose more”. The dr and dietitian both told me to ease up on myself. They said I’m doing great and they are pleased with my progress (turns out my weight fluxed up with my period so I’m down exactly 20 pounds from surgery day). Even so - they are happy with how I’m healing and told me to get hydrated, up my protein & calories (they gave me a range) and then told me to follow up with my pcp (see him Monday). But to stay on plan and they both think I’m off to a good start and that I will do well. The first month is all about healing, recovery and getting used to our new routines as we progress through the phases. They asked me what NSV I noticed when I was frustrated with the scales and encouraged me to keep watching my body change because that is sometimes a better indicator of progress (and I do see a lot of changes). I know it is hard, especially when we set goals for ourself and we don’t meet our own expectations. But slow and STEADY wins the race… we can do this!! I was so stressed going into my appointments but I was so happy when I came out hearing their encouragement to keep doing what I’m doing. -
Hey, those NSVs and your losses are awesome! How do you know you don't need your CPAP, do you have a sleep tracker that tracks your breathing, heart rate and blood oxygen level? I had to sleep without my CPAP for a week and I thought I was fine, too. Then, I looked at my Sleep Tracker (my bed is fancy and records breathing/heart rate, but not oxygen level) and my sleep score was way down all week and I snored more, breathed in a sporadic way and my heart rate went up (that's what makes us gasp in our sleep to get in more air, usually doesn't wake you up). I highly recommend another sleep study before you just stop using your CPAP, you could be hurting your heart.

BED and psych clearance
KimA-GA replied to Nepenthe44's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
great job with the hard work (and it’s soo hard)… just keep on and things will fall into place… also talk to you out psych about his opinion of your recovery. maybe there is more he sees or he isn’t really seeing your whole picture. i am only about 9 months in “remission” (seven at the time of psych eval) … this past week has stress tested me and the “worst” thing i did food wise was turn to an extra serving of sugar free jello and ate it in a stress snit… it is freeing not to be held back due to the compulsion anymore… -
I was supposed to have been scheduled for mid to late August. I called and messaged the RN who was supposed to schedule it for me finally 2 weeks later I get a message saying sorry I forgot to schedule it before I left for my 2 week vacation and that the soonest the surgeon has available was October 4th. Talk about frustrating I wanted to reach through the phone and grab her and shake her and tell her she better fix it and make it for August but I tried to calm down and just go with the flow and time has actually gone by really fast so trying not to be too mad at her lol
