Thyroid Problem Question
sleevemeup replied to futureskinnypants's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Great to hear of the success of Hypo patients having success with this procedure. I have Hashi's and my thyroid hardly works. I also have Celiac, which from what I hear goes hand in hand. I am worried that my weightloss will be slower, but this is a change, and I want to make sure it sticks! -

I am hypo and my doc said as long as my thyroid levels are within normal range there is no reason u will no lose. -
Hi all, my friend is having surgery in June. Shes got a thyroid problem. I'm not sure if its hypo or hyper but her doctor is telling her that she may not lose more than 80 lbs the whole surgery. I'm not sure how much she weights but i'd say more than 300 less than 450. Is this the truth? She's now worried about getting the surgery because shes not sure that it's going to be worth it for her. Shes about 28 years old. What do you all think? Ps....shes on medicaid so the surgery is free and so is the skin removal surgery afterwards. Not sure if this has anything at all to do with it but i figured i'd throw it in there.

I kept pretty good records from when I had the band in 2009. From the date of surgery to 1st mos I lost 8 lbs. 2nd mos I lost 4 lbs and 3rd mos 3 lbs. See my signature below for comparison. Keep in mind, I'm a slow loser, I have hypo thyroid and I was was a higher BMI when I got the band. So, to answer your question yes I'm losing faster with sleeve but best of all I'm doing it without throwing up & sliming every day like I did with the band.

Hi. Just wanted to introduce myself. I am a 41 years old female residing in southern California. I have been overweight most of my life and am just starting to suffer the consequences to my health. my weight just hit an all time high of 300 lbs. This is my heaviest ever. Not to mention, I was able to pull off being overweight in my twenties and thirties due to having some semblence of fitness despite my size. This is no longer the case. It is high time for a change and I am hopefully starting the first steps of a new life journey. Can't wait to see where this ends up! I am currently enrolled in a bariatric surgery program through my health insurance and with any luck, will be able to have surgery at the end of this 6-8 month "jump through hoops" period. (fingers crossed, although I know it is not guaranteed) I originally was considering the lap band, but with research, I am beginning to lean towards the VGS and that is why I am here, to research, hear testimonies and get a feel for how it has changed lives. I am also interested in anyone who has had hypothyroidism and how this surgery has worked for them. I am severely hypo due to post RAI. I am married, no children and I am self employed. Anyway, that's me! Looking forward to making some new buddies and educating myself!

Intro & A Couple Of Questions

You are so lucky you have BCBS. They seem like the best insurance. From all I read you will be fine especially with apnea which is considered serious. I have UHC and they said only "serious " co-morbidities would work which they get to determine what is serious. Basically it was diabetes, hypertension, or apnea is all they would accept under 40 and for 5 years and you had to have two of then!! I have insulin resistance taking metformin for, high cholesterol , triglycerides , and reactive airway. Not good enough after 3 appeals. Anyhow good you have BCBS and sure you will get through approved. Good luck -
I'm 3 mos post op and lost 33 lbs including preop diet! So yeah jump for joy. I'm a slow loser & have hypo thyroid but I'm have way to goal. Woohoo!

For the people who have hypo what were your numbers before meds if you don't mind. Just want to know where I fall. I'm like right I'm te edge but since there is such a huge "normal" range I'm curious. I hope this all make me feel better bc right now I feel like crap. Taking my first rx sleep pill even though I've had insomnia all my life. Taking my first thyroid med tomorrow and I got an X-ray of my back and might have to start pain injections. It's nice to start gettin answers about my health and start doing something about it

I also have hypo. I had to get a letter from both my endocrinologist and gp for ins company and bariatric surgeon. Letter from endocrinologist stated he supported my decision of getting lapband, my thyroid issue was under control and that he would continue to follow me after my surgery. I am on a very small dose and just recently started taking it correctly. (1/2 hour before eating or drinking anything) and it is amazing how much better I feel. I never ate with it but I would take it with my coffee with creamer. Haha.

Hypothyroidism & Lapband
Cocoabean replied to Bel12's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The test is for Thyroid Stimulating Hormone, it checks the level of hormone released by the pituitary asking the thyroid for hormone. So it is inverse. High TSH means you are hypothyroid. My guess would be that they want to know the reason you are hypo before proceeding, and get you treatment. Once that is figured out, then I'd imagine you'll be cleared. I had a nodule on my thyroid, had it radiated and now have minimal function. I take thyroxine daily. As long as I was being treated and my levels were normal, there was no issue. I would be uncomfortable with a surgeon who would proceed without further testing of it. If you had thyroid cancer or something that needed treatment now and they did band surgery without looking for the cause of the hypo?? ....wow...that would be negligent on their part in my opinion. -
I have hypo. If its under .3 then it's hyper. 4.9 is hypo. I havnt said anything to surgery yet bc I just found out today and I havnt even had my consultations yet but I know someone told me that they wanted your thyroid under control before surgery

Just confused as to whether your thyroid levels are high or low. Hypo in front of something always refers to a low level e.g hypothyroidism, hypothermia, hypotension etc If it is high then it is Hyper. Not trying to be picky just trying to clear up which you have. And listening to Dr's, newsreaders etc it can be difficult to tell as they never seem to enunciate this well which means it is easy to confuse what they have said.

I am hypo as well, and I've lost 65 pounds in 4 months , it hasn't slowed my loss at all like I thought it would, and they lowered my synthroid to .75 from 100. -

I'm hypo too. I need to get mine checked but I'm 3 mos post op and feel ok. I've been a slow loser for years which I attribute to my hypothyroid. -
I have hypothyroidism also. My understanding is that when ur hypo it slows down ur system and you gain weigh but when its hyper u loose weigh but the meds dont make u gain weigh. I dont know u might wanna ask ur specialist more about it. Sent from my iPhone using VST

You may be ahead of the game if you haven't lost any hair yet. As I understand it, most people notice it very soon after surgery. That is what happened in my case. As far as taking anything for it, I think being proactive is better than being reactive. Hair loss is a combined result of a nutritional deficiency and the post operative shock that your body goes thru after major surgery. You may be one of those fortunate few who will not experience a significant hair loss. Keep doing what you're doing because it doesn't sound there's anything broken for you to fix! Good luck!

3 Years Post Op-1 Year Post Gall Bladder Removal And Gaining Weight. Need Help, Please
allamrcnwmn replied to allamrcnwmn's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
No, you don't come on too strong. You are straight forward, and I appreciate that. My first surgeon gave me his rules: Protein shakes for 2 days after a fill, then soft foods, like soft scrambled eggs and sugar free pudding and Jello. Then I can work up to fish and soft veggies. The last doc said nothing but Water for the first day (clear liquids) no milk, then the 2nd day Protein Shakes, and the 3rd day soft foods. Told me I shouldn't be able to eat much, but I can eat an entire 12 in Subway sub (toasted ham and cheese). You are right. I have to get back to basics. I do drink when I eat. I will work on that this week. No more bread, rice or Pasta, either. What about coffee? Can I still have my coffee? The dietician said I had 3 overlapping issues with sugar. She said I may be having dumping syndrome, reactive hypoglycemia, and pre-diabetic hypoglycemia. She said that each of these things can mess up my sugar, but can be controlled. Also, when I had my gallbladder out, I get the Worst case of burping! It doesn't matter what I eat, I burp. -
Food Makes Me Sleepy...
Caradina replied to Lilee84's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have it too. I was told that it is reactive hypoglycemia. When I eat, my body responds with too much insulin and then I crash. There's really nothing I can do about it. Carbs and sugars make it MUCH worse. Irarely have this on pure protein. The hope right now is that it will normalize as I lose weight, as it is a pre-diabetes symptom. -
Left Shoulder Pain
amsterjonathon replied to mdejesus22's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
As reassuring as it is to know that we are all in this 'left shoulder boat' I am concerned about it. It had all but subsided after day 4 and the day (day 6) that I had my drain removed, it came searing back at that very moment. I'll try to walk more and I'm keeping up with the Tylenol and ice pack but, wow, does it hurt. Same exact place that you've described (in the joint). Maybe the drain being pulled out somehow 'reactivated' the nerve irritation that had subsided?? Any thoughts or support would be appreciated, Amy ) -
I am on the other side! Going pretty good. Just a lot of gas pain in lung area. Can't walk hypo much bcuz my bp drops. Overall good! Excited now to move forward

Reactive Hypoglycemia? Might Need A Quick Response Before I Wake Up My Neighbors!
lighteningbug posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm going on Day 5 post op, have had no problems at all and felt great. I was off pain meds and I walked a mile today, but I decided to take a full dose of my liquid hydrocodone tonight at 8:30 after I put my kids to bed. I am still on clear liquids. I am starting to feel a little shaky, a little faint(the feeling I used to get occasionally when I would accidently forget to eat) and cured if I had a glucose tab or a quick sugar fix to counteract the low blood sugar. I've never been diagnosed with hypoglycemia but it has happened a handful of times in the past. My question is.... if this feeling continues to get worse and I feel like my blood sugar is dropping, can I take a glucose tab or an ounce of apple juice with sugar to bring my blood sugar back up? I'm starting to freak out a little bc my kids are all here asleep. If I knew I could have regular apple juice that would set my mind at ease but I know Im not supposed to have sugar??? Will it cause me to have a leak or is it only for losing weight reason. What will happen if I need to dissolve a glucose tab to prevent passing out? Like I said, I have been feeling 100% great, getting pleanty of proteins and liquids in. I'm afraid maybe walking in excess, taking care of kids while my husband traveled today and having a full dose of hydrocodone was a bad combo for me. Any advice please??? Thank you, any help appreciated. -
Laundry Detergent...I have never been sensitive. But I had this problem and I switched to a hypo allergenic detergent and I got better. I think as we age so to some of our sensitivities. Also - high sugar...when my diabetes was out of control I had to deal with it.
