Waiting is so hard!
losing_the_band replied to losing_the_band's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Had my consultation, and I'm glad I decided to find another surgeon. I didn't meet the surgeon this time, but I really liked his staff. I didn't feel like the place was a bariatrics mill, either, and they took my concerns about my band seriously. They did a complete unfill, and I've got an appointment for an upper GI series with barium. Hopefully, we'll be able to document a slip so I can get a revision. -
In need of friends/buddies for this new journey

Welcome Alex and Janie! You have come to the right place for friendship and support! I'm pre op... I'm having a lapband revision to sleeve next month. -
I had my lap band placed in 2008 and did really well, with it, until last November. I ended up in the er unable to keep anything down and waking up choking with reflux. Band was unfilled and, turns out, has slipped. I got my insurance approval, for revision, on Thursday and will be getting my surgery date on Monday! I'm so excited and scared! What advice can you guys give me???

My dear hubby and I have been married for nearly 20 years, and he is my EVERYTHING! He had band-to-sleeve revision in mid-November 2013. His goal is to lose 100 lbs. In the eight weeks following surgery, he lost 55 lbs. But in the past 3 weeks, the scale is not moving. I tell him all the time how great he is doing, but I can tell he is starting to get discouraged. I'm not sure how to best support him during the inevitable 'stalls'. I figure this group can give me the best advice - - so.... what do you recommend?

I can give you the reason why I fought to have VSG instead of RNY for my revision. 1) regain stats for RNY are just scary 2) # of RNY patients seeking revisions to DS or ERNY because the malabsorption of calories/fat only lasts 2 years, BUT, the malabsorption of nutrients and Vitamins last a lifetime. Not really a fair trade off in my opinion 3) I didn't want to self punish myself if I wanted a cookie. I mean come on that's pretty evil to induce dumping syndrome. Skinny bitches have a cookie or two here and there. Plus, dumping only occurs in 30% of RNY patients, no guarantee it'd keep me out of the cookie jar. 4) I didn't want a blind stomach that can still develop cancer and ulcers yet is difficult to access for scopes, and nearly impossible to diagnose because of the complicated staple line. 5) The pouch caused by the RNY and band are pretty much the same. My body hated the pouch with my band. I knew it would be the same with RNY. It's not natural, I love having a normal, fully functioning tummy. NO pouch, NO stoma with VSG. 6) No Vitamin, nutrient deficiencies with VSG caused by malabsorption. 7) Long term complications with RNY were too numerous for me to even consider a malabsorptive procedure 8) Gastrectomies have been performed for decades upon decades for stomach cancer and ulcerative conditions. Out of all of my research, I found gastrectomy patients living very normal, full lives with partial or complete gastrectomies. Some people have their entire stomach remove and are able to live fairly normal lives. Of course, there are dietary changes and different requirements, but overall, their lives were close to normal. 9) I know several RNY patients in real life, personal close friends, that struggle with regain, Iron infusions weekly for 8 weeks then off for a month, and back on for 2, bowel obstructions, pouch dilation, and other issues related to RNY. 10) The weight loss stats with VSG are neck and neck with VSG and RNY. I knew restriction would be enough for me. Portion control and constant restriction is what I needed. RNY is a great surgery for some people, but for me, it was not a match. For me, VSG was the only option. If I could not have had VSG, my band would have been removed, and I would have stayed fat.

Hey! I didn't realize how many people had band problems either. It's been nice to read what others have experienced. I can't help much with what to expect since I'm in my pre-op for revision starting today. My surgery is on 2/13. But I'll keep ya posted!

I got my band in 1996 and struggled all these years. I was revised ok April 2016. It's been the best thing I've ever done. I'm about 10 lbs away from my goal. I've had.no issues at all.

Some insurance companies will not cover revision without medical necessity. The insurance companies believe if you've blown one surgery, you will not succeed with another. Some employers do not have weight loss surgery covered under their policies.

I'm just getting started with the revision process in Dayton, Ohio. May I ask what insurance you have that didn't require the diet? I'm just stressing about repeating the process after just going through it last year, lol. Good luck on your journey though! Sent from my Pixel XL using BariatricPal mobile app

Question about waiting periods/pre-op requirements
hockeyfan7 replied to geoblonde's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
For my band to sleeve revision the insurance company only made me go through the psychiatric visit again. Plus the normal pre-op EKG and blood work that pretty much everyone has to have for any kind of surgery. The surgeon only made me to do the psychiatric appointment too. -
Just had last appt today-next step insurance approval!

The Lap Band can be installed alone or it can be combined with a procedure called Plication. Plication is where your surgeon "folds" your stomach in on it's self and stitches the folds together to form a much smaller main stomach. There is no cutting of stomach tissue and, if the Plication, for whatever reason doesn't work for you, it is reversible by simply removing the sutures. Think of it as a pseudo Gastric Sleeve-ish kinda thing. If you have the option to add Plication when you get your band, you might want to go for it. A lot of people who have had the duo are really happy with it. Personally, I wish I had read up on it, more before I got my band. Had I known then what I know now, I would have added Plication to the pile when I had my surgery. As it is, I am happy with my band and I figure, should God forbid, I lose my band for any reason, maybe I can revise to Plication. -
Hi, I'm getting a lap band removed with a RNY revision in November and I was wondering if any of y'all that have had the bypass are vegetarians? What is your "go-to" protein? Thanks!

Personality and friendliness aside, where can I details on surgeons such as how many lapbands they have done, percent revisions, etc?

Can I be sleeved if band caused damage?
denisestevedr replied to Thistlegirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I just had my band removed last week with Dr. Alvarez in Mexico. He said that I will be able to come back in 6 months for the VSG revision but said that some have so much damage from the band that a sleeve is impossible without leaking or other complications. So, it is possible to have so much damage of the stomach from the band to not be able to ever have the sleeve without complications. Good to find a doctor that knows what he is doing and only does the VSG when he feels comfortable there will be minimal issues. There is always a risk but good to have a very experienced surgeon to tell you the truth. -
Can I be sleeved if band caused damage?

Sometimes they can't get a nicely shaped and size sleeve on revision so ask about it. I was revised in 2011 and very happy with my sleeve! -
Lap band New to blogs and sleeves...
k3nnabear posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am very new to blogging and just downloaded this app today. I am having a revision of my realize band to the gastric sleeve. I am Very interested in the conversations and the information we all can share. Currently I still have my lap band It was placed October 21, 2008 And am expecting to have it revised hopefully within a month or less. I got an EGD done to take pictures to find out about my constant nausea vomiting and sliming . It showed my stomach was perfectly fine everything like that no problems except for a few ulcers. It turned out to be The esophagitis and H. pylori And so I started the course of treatment and had my band completely unfilled the same time. **side note I never have heart burn*** Since then I'm having horrible gastritis pain in my band site N/V/D and I can't take it anymore. Please tell me the sleeve helps with some of this ! I hope to have surgery soon!! -
Dee, revising from the band to the sleeve was the best thing I ever did! I have had so much more success and love it!

6 days since surgery and my abs finally aren't hurting.
Losingit2018 replied to Slimming Down Steve's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Your incisions are looking good! Totally different places that mine though. Of course mine was a revision from sleeve. I have one directly inside my belly button and one on the right side of belly. The others are all below my belly button. mine was also done robotically. I see another little cutie back behind Bruno. Did he get to go for a walk too? actually the more I look I think your incisions are about the same as mine were for sleeve. -
Revised from the Lap Band (ugh) to the Sleeve on 4/22/13... total loss since surgery 29lbs... Dr says I'm doing great, I thought I was going slow... I finally came to the realization, that I didn't put on all this weight in one day & I can't expect for it to come off over night... Even if it takes me a year, I know I will do it

Insurance approvals for revision to bypass.
nomorefattypatty posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I've done all my requirements for the bypass revision, due to hiatal hernia and problems with reflux my dr. says I need to get revised from the sleeve to bypass. Anyone else having trouble with insurance company getting this approved.? I'm really suffering over here and they just tell me my appeal is pending. Anyone know how I can push this forward? Help! Hi! I was banded on the 26th and had the exact same thing as you. My doctor assured me it was a stitch used to hold the port pulling on a muscle. It's like when you put your hair in a ponytail, sometimes a stray hair is sitting at an awkward angle and it pulls and hurts, but eventuallu things settle down and find a place. He said it would get better on its own, and it has. So don't get too worried about port revisions and such (I was freaking myself out worrying). It sounds normal. Just take it easy and don't strain the area any more, and it will heal up soon.

Maribelle, I wish I could say something to help inspire you but I've been there and have been told "it's only a tool". And I say why did I pay $30,000 for a tool that requires me to have the same amount of willpower "now" that I didn't have prior to getting the lap band. So before I got the band I was under the impression that solids were solids and they'd fill me up in my new small pouch and I would only be able to eat a certain amount be it healthy or non-healthy foods. Wrong, the junk food that I crave, especially during TOM still goes through the band without a problem. To me that's not the right tool and not worth the $30,000 and whatever else I'm paying this Friday to have it removed, thank God to be "normal" again! Plus if you're only able to eat a bit of Protein and you're still craving "food" you'll get it in. Maybe only a small amount of people behave that way once banded but they need to be aware it can be very difficult. So maybe you'll be able to get the "secret" of how the band is supposed to work for everyone and you'll be able to start losing the weight and won't be in the same position I'm in a little over a year later getting it taken out. I do wish you luck and don't mean to scare you but I was in the same position back in March when I joined this site to find out why I wasn't losing and that was seven months after I was banded. So I feel people need to know that there are certain people that will always have issues with losing weight even if banded. If that weren't true then Obesity Help - Weight Loss Surgery, Obesity Support Groups, Obesity Forums, Surgical Procedures wouldn't have their own revision section and plenty of bandsters are there! Good luck I wish you well and hope you find the answer you need, Nancy:smile:

I was a revision so I had a bit of a different mindset. I spent a long time debating both, whether I deserved another chance at WLS, and also if I could even be successful after failing once before. But I do think that going back and forth is fairly common. Even when we know we need to do something to save our lives, I would question the sanity of the person that didn't at least give a 2nd thought to removing 85% of a major organ! Now, I would never look back and couldn't be happier, but I certainly spent plenty of time questioning my decision too, just in different ways!

Insurance Approval
Pinkgirl1234 replied to Titaniumsleeved2014's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Every time I get a flare up I am running to the doctor....oh yeah...they will see that getting a revision is cheaper for them in the long run. -
Hi, everyone just wondering if there's any revision sleeve to bypass patient of there that have United Healthcare. If so was it extremely hard to get approved for the revision surgery and did it take a long time for the approval. Also I'm only 14 months out from being sleeved and just wondering if I would have to go through the entire process again. I'm having extreme complications with gerd not to mention I've only lost about 30-40lbs with the sleeve. My BMI is still over 40 and my health issues have become more complicated. My diabetes is worse than ever, my blood pressure is staying up and the GERD has me in pain and vomiting a lot. Any advice anyone??
