For me it was really basic. I had a painful knee that I had suffered with for 37 years and I wanted to get a knee replacement. They wouldn't do it at the weight I was then, so I took the plunge. I had my bariatric surgery in March 2019 and my knee was replaced in August 2020. It's SO GOOD being out of pain now!

1. get referral --> surgery consult I didn't have to get a referral as such, but I did have to attend a seminar that the Dr gave where he described the various bariatric surgeries he performs. They figure it will answer your questions about which surgery is best for you. Then a huge packet of paperwork and an application fee to get an appt. about a month later. 2. surgery consult --> surgery scheduled 6 months! I was required to go on a 6 month diet and exercise program to "prove" I couldn't lose weight by normal means before my insurance would pay. 3. surgery scheduled --> the actual operation From the day my approval hit the Dr's desk to surgery - 10 days 4. operation --> leaving the hospital I checked in at 6 AM, the operation was scheduled for 7AM; I was in the car on the way home by 10 AM. 5. left hospital --> first fill 6 weeks. I have heard that is the standard to allow for healing. I had my second fill at 8 weeks out and my third at 10. I have already scheduled my next fill for the end of January when I will be 15 weeks out.

Hello, I have read this entire thread on your story and I am here to tell you that now you are one of the ones helping others for sure. I have not had my surgery yet, I hope it will be soon. As soon as they get my Psych. Eval typed up and sent to the Bariatric Center then it will be turned in to insurance to see if I get approved. I am getting closer and closer. Everytime I read a story such as yours, I am always encouraged to hang in there. I had a total knee replacement 1 1/2 years ago, so I didn't want to have surgery again, but here I am hoping to have VSG surgery soon. To hear that you have already lost 10 pounds and you are already home gives me more hope and faith that I am doing the right thing. I keep coming on here to get help and each time I always find someone's comments that lift me up whenever I need it. One of these days soon my experience of having the surgery will help others just like your story and other's have helped me. I hope and pray for the best for you and everyone else on your journey!! -

5 years out need advice please
Healthy_life2 replied to heatherjane2505's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Way to go! You are getting your head back in the game. Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out. I never use the bariatric store. When you deprive cravings, you want them more. Are there better options that you can buy for sweet and salty cravings? Hope others can jump in here and help with healthy sweet and salty snacks that are more cost effective. make sure food advice fits your food plan.. Sweet: Plain fruit, fruit dipped in sugar free cholate syrup Salad greens, chicken, strawberries, blue cheese and pecans Skinny girl raspberry vinaigrette. Dannon lite n fit Greek yogurt sugar free popsicles Roasted pumpkin and apple drizzled with sugar free maple syrup. sprinkle with cinnamon, (small amount with your protein goes a long way) Salty: Veggies dipped in hummus (cut calories by mixing plain yogurt in hummus) Chicken fajitas or taco salad (no tortilla) Parmesan cheese crisps Cup of chicken broth. -
Headache...help!!!
GreenTealael replied to DanieHall's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is usually what Bariatric teams suggest. Call your email/team & ask. Also dehydration causes wicked headaches so try make sure you are properly hydrated (water and electrolyte drinks) as this *may* solve the problem Get Well Soon 💜 -
Just wanted to say thank you to all you girls. I started feeling good on Monday, and now I feel great. Still not sure when I'm feeling full, and I have an insatiable thirst but don't wanna overdo it. Other than that im good. According to my scale at home I've lost almost 60 total. According to the one at the bariatric center I'm only down about 50. Either way good I think. But from someone who has never been more miserable in her life, it DOES get easier!!

I asked my surgeon abt the clear liquid rule the day I went in for surgery because I tried the clear Isopure ready made drinks and thought I was gonna die. He said as long as I'm mixing y protein with water it was absolutely fine. I trust my surgeon a tremendous amount. He is the director of the bariatric unit at the hospital and I have not had a single complication. I couldn't imagine not having him to turn to.

Gastric Sleeve to MGB in 18 days
Guest replied to Manuel Lopez Ganoza's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I had 30 years of scar tissue in my surgery. I also know the names you get Called when you fail at WLS. try dr. Ponce de leon thru Bariatric Pal. I am beyond satisfied. Hit me up if you want to vent. -
Hi Stacyann, My surgery was on June 30, 2014 and while I was not outwardly nervous the day I had surgery, my blood pressure said something totally different! I have never had high blood pressure at all, but the day of my surgery when they checked, it was 204! Little beepers went off! I realized I was internally scared, but had only found bariatric pal two days before my surgery. After about 5 minutes of deep breathing and telling myself that so many people I knew had surgery with the Dr. I had also chosen, my blood pressure came down to 130/74 and I got a hold of myself! I had a drain and it did not bother me, but the last day it began to be a little sore. I had stopped taking pain meds and it was not painful - just sore. Because I was checking out that day they took it out. I took a deep breath, clenched my tummy muscles and it was a breeze when they took it out. No pain. The drain hole healed up very quickly, too! 7 days after surgery it was healed and is the size of a pencil eraser. My surgeon used an anesthetic pack for my stomach. It was a pouch that I wore around my neck and two little bitty (and I mean super tiny) tubes delivered anesthetic directly to my stomach during my hospital stay. So I really felt very little, if any pain after surgery. Once I came home, other than needing a nap in the afternoons and trying to make sure I walked, I really have had no pain. When I did have pain I found it was from becoming lactose intolerant - a very common issue after surgery. Lactose free milk is just plain gentler on your stomach and once I switched, it has been great. I am due for my 2 week post op appointment in 5 days and other than drinking shakes for meals, I don't feel like I have had surgery. No pain, no discomfort. I know everyone's different, but I want you to know the my truth. I also had many friends and family praying for me and that feeling surrounded me as I took comfort in knowing I was cared for. Keep asking questions and know that we are all in this together. (No high school musical song pun intended!) Lissa

I'm 3 week out and so far I've been using specialist Bariatric Vitamins that I'd bought prior to surgery. However, my surgeon suggested there was no need to have these and he recommended some for me. The Iron he recommends is 200mg ferrous sulphate, and the Calcium is the AdCal-D3, which is calcium carbonate. Doing my own research I've read that calcium citrate is much better absorbed and there are more gentler iron supplements I could be taking that are also better absorbed. I just wondered what people's views were on this? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I am about 6 weeks post op. I've already called my bariatric office and left a message. About 10 days ago my husband had a stomach bug that we thought was food poisoning from him getting Chinese take out. It lasted three days. This morning, I woke up and felt "not right." Then I started to get nauseous. I took a zofran and drank half a protien shake with some decaf. Four hours later, I popped another Zofran because the nausea came back. I went to the bathroom and had diahreah, but once the zofran kicked in again I felt better. Now, I'm having this strange gurgle pains going through my intestines. (I think it's my intestines at least.) I ate a sf Popsicle and I felt it travel all the way through. I haven't thrown up at all but I thank the zofran for that because I truly think I would be otherwise. I've had no complications at all, I think everything is healing okay inside. I haven't had any pain anywhere. Yesterday I was packing some boxes and now I feel a little like I did some ab work from bending and moving around. Usually, I would take pepto or Imodium and go from there--but I've had issues being "backed up" two times in the recent past and I don't wanna constipate myself. Is the gurgling all the way down thing normal? Should I take some pepto and tough it out later? Should I try saltines? I've been the anti carb since I started.

Introducing myself as I begin my journey
Luvin_Life125 replied to lauraellen80's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
You didn't fail anything! It is great your bariatric medical team is so vested in helping you make the changes necessary to be successful post op. They are working with you so the process is beneficial and so that you have a better chance of long term success. I know when you are waiting for surgery and going through all of the pre surgery requirements time drags forever and it feels like a waste of time. I felt the same way and was very annoyed. It made a huge difference in my ability to succeed so far. I am also contemplating starting to see a psych doc regularly to work through things that interfere with my mental health. I want this to be successful long term and I need to be right mentally and emotionally to help be as successful as I can. Work with your team to ensure your long term success. Hang in there and you will be on the losers bench before you know it! -
I never could do protien either, in food or milk. I had to get it by meat. My surgeon said to not worry about the protien so much until I get the fluids in because the hydration is more important initially. And I had the bariatric advantage vitamins and became very close to vomiting each time to take it so I didnt take any for a while. (not advised lol) but once I could take them again I started on centrum multivitamin and calcium gummies. Much easier

1 week post op
Kelliel633 replied to shiannajohnson's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved 4/13 and had my post op appointment today. I lost 10 pounds on pre op liquids and 10 pounds on liquids post op. Starting purée/ soft diet for next 2 weeks. Have bought some of the bariatric pastas and add salmon or tuna for extra protein. Had some pretty wicked spasms initially when I drank too fast but they seem to have abated. Still a little swollen in my upper mid section as well but as this is where the incisions are I think it’s normal. -
How many fills did it take till everything felt just right?
ellendeette replied to Heatherooni's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I agree with Julie. I felt pressured to have my first fill despite that I was losing weight. After my first fill, I have not lost ANY WEIGHT. In fact, I gained a few pounds. My bariatric surgeon said at a support group meeting (weeks after my first fill) that he doesn't not expect any restriction of food until the second fill! My second fill is in a couple of weeks and I'm looking forward to it and to start losing weight again. I would suggest not having a fill until you start slowing down with losing weight or stop losing weight. If I had to do it all over again. That is what I would do. I am not craving food but I have little to none restriction on the amount of food. To succeed with weight loss, we need the added tool of restriction with a fill. -
How many fills did it take till everything felt just right?
ellendeette replied to Heatherooni's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My bariatric surgeon spoke at our support group last week and he says that it takes the second fill before we feel any restriction. I did not feel absolutely no difference with my first fill. I have my second fill in September. Hang in there! Please let me know if and when you feel any restriction. My surgery appears to make me feel full and took away cravings. I am hopeful that the fills will give us restriction and allow us to eat smaller amounts of food and lose weight. -
Comfortable clothing
KittyKat848 replied to janieitstime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wore something loose and comfortable to the hospital and wore the same outfit home. They gave me a bariatric gown and skid socks -- and frankly, it is just a lot easier to wear their stuff. The IV and monitors really would have made clothes from home and a bathrobe more trouble than it's worth. I really needed very little from home. -
After 3 years, Dr doesn't like my band and I'm starting over
Bandista replied to kmt1973's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi there @@kmt1973 -- there is a group of very successful banders who post on a thread called Banders #7. With so many different surgeries represented here on Bariatric Pal, Banders are somewhat of a minority so I always look there first. And I try to avoid the negative band talk from those who have had revisions. I'm sorry you had to go through all of that and hope that you're on track now -- sounds like the unfill and now refill process is going well. I think some doctors are annoyed at all the followup that a band requires. Most surgeons would rather be in the OR than discussing the finer points of appetite. There are a couple of links in my signature below which really helped me a lot -- the O'Brien Eight Golden Rules of Lapband on videos and the Dr. Simpson link. Best wishes to you! -
every insurance company AND surgeon are different, and each may require certain pre-op things including: -apt with family doctor and written letter from them In full support of surgery -supervised nutritionist classes and on-on-one nutritional counseling that requires you to keep food logs, count calories, Protein, fat, etc. plus Fluid intake, Vitamins, supplements... - psych consult (my surgeon required more than one apt) and sometimes ongoing psych appts for counseling - multiple appts with the surgeon themselves -cardiac clearance, usually including a stress test - Upper endoscopy or EGD or barium swallow - Pulmonary Function testing and apt with Pulmonologist - MAJOR amounts of bloodwork including thyroid, liver, kidney function, lipids (cholesterol), diabetes screen including fasting blood sugar, A1C, blood insulin levels, various hormone levels, complete metabolic panel, CBC, pregnancy test, and more... - sleep Study and if positive, a 30 day compliance with CPAP machine (the machines have an SD card that stores the data of compliance and it is downloaded)... - Some require proof of ongoing weight loss efforts either through gym, trainer, formal programs like Weight Watchers, etc, and I have seen some require that proof for a 6-12 month timeframe - Required attendance to a bariatric support group for a period of time At the time of surgery, the hospital may also require a chest x-ray, urinalysis and pre-op blood work and EKG and more. These were my requirements. Luckily, I breezed through most of this within a couple of months and just wrapping up my nutrition appts! Like I said, they are all different. Then, there are also some insurance companies that barely require anything at all other than a BMI of 40!

Hiya all! (in research/planning phase)
SillyWillyMommy replied to Sunmaid's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Huh?? Sounds like you need a new PCP. My PCP is completely anti-wls, in ANYCASE. She's kind of closed minded when it comes to stuff like that, and everytime I bring it up, she's like "Why don't you give Weight Watchers another try?"... HOWEVER, I am fortunate enough to live very close to a bariatric center, who (it seems) is handling it so I don't need to go through my PCP, and so far everything is covered, and my final paperwork will be submitted in 3 weeks. Maybe there's a different doctor YOU could try? -
Moving to BOSTON! 6 Week Post Follow and Travel!
BackSpin81 posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Just some random thoughts... So I'm excited and stressed... with excitement! After searching for months I was finally offered a new position in my home state, Massachusetts! My last day at my job will be next Wednesday on 5/20/2015 and then I hit the road shortly after. I'm still not sure of which will be leaving but I at least want to be in Boston by Memorial Day. In my opinion, there is no point in prolonging my time in Colorado! I can't wait to get back to the East Coast and to city life again! But I'll have to find a Bariatric support group and follow-up doctor in the area (which should not be difficult at all). So if you have any suggestions, please feel free to let me know. On another note, I went to my 6 week post follow-up appointment today. Apparently I'm on target and cleared to eat all foods! Yaaay... kinda. Lol. I have been able to get all of my Water and Protein in but hardly any fruits and veggies. She suggested that I eat more often and change my protein portion sizes when I have a meal. Hmm. My response back was that I may not fulfill my protein requirement if I lower my protein (meat) intake. I asked the dietitian about this and she assured me that I'll be able to eat more as time goes on and suggested finding protein in things other than meat. But I don't know. It's easier for me to have a 3 oz piece of salmon or chicken at 20+ grams of protein at lunch or dinner opposed to have less an eating more throughout the day. I'll consider it, but still on the fence. Next, I went on a roadtrip last weekend. It was my way of seeing this region of the country for the first/last time ever. I have no plans to come back and visit this area again, so I figured I'd drive, hang out, and take photos of everything I saw. I went to the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, The Four Corners, and the Grand Canyon (FINALLY!!) and it was gorgeous! I took awesome photos, got plenty of rest, talked to strangers and stayed at 2 very different but cool hotels. So, yeah. it was the perfect way to say goodbye. Colorado, its been.... interesting,
