  1. My youngest daughter, now 5, is a lap band baby. I got pregnant with her 6 months after having the band done. I am a revision and LOVE the sleeve. I can't give any opinion about pregnancy with the sleeve but with the band I can say I did not have any issues. I ate nutritious food, took liquid Vitamins (EXPENSIVE) and did everything the OB Dr said and had a healthy 8.8 lb baby girl. I will also say that although age is a factor that needs to be considered, I was 33 for my first daughter and 43 for my second. There is a great advantage to being an older mom and with my very energetic 5 year old, I am so thankful to be thinner and able to keep up with her. My advice for whatever it is worth to ya.....get the sleeve, wait until you are down to goal and then get pregnant. You will be healthier for pregnancy, able to be more active with your baby and be like me....kick ass right along side all those younger moms
  2. I saw my sugeon yesterday about this darn band that has never been the same since I unfilled it. He gave me a monster fill and I'm going for a barium swallow. we think there's several possibilities - it might be leaking for starters. Although all through the refill process as I've complained of not having the restriction I think I should have (although I have had restriction, just not what I previously would have had a certain fill levels) when the docs have checked the Fluid, its been there. But this time, I only had 3cc, when we thought I should have 3.4cc. Well, the records say that, verbally the doctor I'd seen said I had 3.8cc! When it was unfilled, there wasnt the fluid in there we thought there should be. So the other possibility is that the records have been stuffed up along the way, we've gotten confused and I've never had in there what I thought I had. Other than that, of course, there's the possibility of a slip, I'd be surprised as I've had 3 CT scans and about 4 abdo xrays in the last year for cancer related reasons and my band has never looked obviously out of place. A very remote possibility is erosion - I'm horribly Iron depleted to the point that suggests a GI bleed somewhere and I know its not from my colon as that has all been checked out only in November. But my surgeon didnt think that at all likely, he said I'd have lost restriction entirely. After my monster fill, this morning, I can feel it, its at least held overnight. Its pretty good restriction but again, I've never had this much fill in before and would expect to be actually too tight. But lets just see how it goes. I've held off any weight gain the whole 9 months I was unfilled, and managed to get through seven months of this fill process with inadequate restriction but its darn hard work and I'm ever so slowly losing the battle now, a half kilo here and there that sticks around. Hopefully at least this fill will stick long enough just to lose 4 or 5 lb again! Not terribly worried, if the band needs to be replaced, the way it works here with my clinic, I paid $4000 up front and the rest was covered by Medicare and Private Health Insurance. All my aftercare, including any revision surgery will be free to me, the cost is billed directly to Medicare and I never have to put my hand in my pocket again. It will just be incovenient but oh well!
  3. The silver lining here is, you were banded and because you were banded you were able to revise to a different surgical technique. You still have a stomach a surgeon can work on. This may not be the case with other surgeries? And, you probably know what to expect with the sleeve this time around. A total commitment or bust! Good luck.
  4. I'm not trying to be rude by any means (Because I know typing can come off completely diff than I'm actually trying to say it), but what are you looking for from this forum? Are you looking to be talked into/out of the plication? I would be happy to tell you whey I decided on the sleeve, and I'm sure many on here would be happy to give the reasons they chose sleeve, but I feel a little confused as to what you're looking for as in responses. I chose the sleeve vs plication because 1) The sleeve reduces ghrelin production 2) The amount of time that it has been done 3) The number of resources I could find with information about sleeve vs plication (There was much less informatino I could find on plication) and 4) I am looking for a permanent change, and the reason to have plication (For me) would be because I am afraid of revision. There is no going back, but that's both a plus and a minus for me, and the positives outweighed the minuses.

    Weight gain and freaking out.

I'm considering revision fro band to bypass and you just sparked a question in my brain....so, if your pouch is a certain size and only hold between 1/4 to 1/2 to 1cup of food....how does one gain weight? Is it the choice of food or is it eating past when one is full? Don't mean to hijack...just figuring it all out...thanks! Marieze
  6. I had sleeve to RNY revision on 10/21. I have lost 57lbs. My recovery was more difficult 2nd surgery, but I don't regret it for a minute. Love my bypass. I will be 6 months out on the 21st and hope to be 60+ lbs down
  7. The decision of what procedure to get is up to you and your doctor. The most important thing is that you get the procedure you are more comfortable with, for most people with the band the fact that you're not cutting your stomach and not rearranging your digestive system was a major reason for choosing the band, at least it was for me. You should also consider what life will be like after surgery. For sleeve and bypass patients, you don't have to follow up with your doctor as often as band patients. Also the process of getting to optimal restriction is often not easy and can take several months and for some people who had to revise from the band never found that green zone. You should also consider how your eating habits will have to change for each procedure, each procedure has it's own set of issues. Also keep in mind that if you want to have the sleeve you will need to make sure that your insurance company will cover it for your BMI, some companies only cover it for patients with a BMI of 50 or higher but this will probably change relatively soon. Finally there is a new procedure called plication where your stomach is folded in on itself and sutured in a sleeve instead of being removed. Initial results show similar weight loss to the sleeve but with fewer complications and this procedure should also be reversible. Since it is new it's not covered by insurance companies yet as a stand alone procedure but they will cover it if you are also having the band at the same time. The benefit of having the combo procedure is that plication seems to eliminate some of the common band complications like erosion and slippage and it should also help you to not be able to cheat the band because your stomach size is reduced. There aren't that may doctors preforming the procedure yet but it's starting to become more common. The main drawback is that there isn't that much long term data on the procedure.

  9. Hello All...I have story to tell. In 2007 I was sleeved..I weighed about 220 lbs..I wasn't that successful with it ..I lost about 25 lbs...In 2010 I had the band removed, I got the sleeve..I was about 210 lbs...I lost about 50 lbs..I did not take my sleeve seriously...I ate what I wanted..I did no exercise...Over the years I started packing on the pounds..I had acid reflux that was out of this world..I was too embarrassed to go back to my bariatric doctor..Finally in November 2016..I returned to my bariatric doctor..weighing 257 lbs...Im sure my doctor was disappointed but he never said anything.I became a diabetic..my blood pressure was elevated..mind I'm only 5ft 4in ..In February my doctor did a hernia repair and a revised sleeve..because I had stretched the first sleeve....This time around I take my sleeve very seriously..Im 2 months post op...I weigh 201lbs..I exercise and eat very healthy ...Im looking forward to a new journey in my life. Sent from my SM-G935T using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. I had a band for 3-1/2 yrs. Only lost weight within the first 6 months, then nothing after. Was miserable with food getting stuck, etc. Ended up with a hiatal hernia near the band site. Revised to the VSG in January and loving life now! In my opinion, the band is evil:sneaky2:... I wouldn't recommomend it to anyone except Osama bin Laden.
  11. Hi Vicki. Well, I can say, I have shared your experience. I did have band slippage after my first year of lapband. Luckily insurance paid for revision surgery and placement of new band. I was crushed emotionally when it happened, but my doctor assured me he was sure I had followed all rules precisely. I am not sure what caused the slippage, but he had told me the last couple of times he had looked at it under fluoroscopy with barium swallow that it looked like I had what he called "a generous pouch" which is a sign of possible future slippage. So when was your revision for replacement? we can encourage one another here. Good luck and thanks for your post.
  12. Exactly lori. I agree it's the rest of your life. Is brotherinlaw have a revision done?

    Gastric bypass risks.

@@Cdominguez I am really leaning towards gastric bypass surgery, I heard of many people getting the sleeve, then years later getting a revision for bybass.
  14. There seems to be some difference of opinion by some as to whether the band is meant to be permanent or temporary. While it can be removed or revised to a different WLS I am not aware of anyone in the medical profession, especially those putting bands in, saying that they are meant to be temporary. Would you have the band put in if you were told it wasn't meant to be permanent?
  15. Just curious - what do you think is going to happen to your weight after your band is removed? Did you discuss this decision with your surgeon before you had the band put in? I know people have the band removed due to complications or revision to another WLS but almost anyone who got theirs removed and not revised to another WLS put all the weight back on. I have never heard of anyone who got the band as a temporary fix with the idea of having it removed after hitting goal. If it took the band to get you to goal what makes you think you will stay there after it's removed and your stomach goes back to normal capacity? These people that you heard of who had theirs removed after goal - did they stay at goal? I guess I am just stunned at your answer as I've never heard this before and am surprised a surgeon would agree to due it for that reason.
  16. My experience was opposite. I was sleeved early 2018. Never lost my appetite with the sleeve. Hunger was a constant battle. Revised to bypass 4 weeks ago and have to force myself to eat. Never hungry and nothing tastes the same as it did pre op. I am following dr plan to the letter. If you were to go off plan and eat carbs you may find that they either make you sick or even more hungry. Possibly both. Try to increase fluid intake and stick to plan. Call your dr if you still find hunger to be troublesome. Maybe they will have some ideas for you. I can barely get a few teaspoons of dense protein in and I am stuffed. Good luck and hang in there!

Well I am back.. I have been discouraged!

I had my surgery on 9/24/09 I went in for my first fill in Nov. and found out that my port was at an angle that I was unable to receive my first fill. I now have to have it revised.. I go in for pretesting tomorrow and will have the revision on 1/11/10. I am very discouraged and have not been exercising and just eating what I want but small portions. My weight at the time of surgery was 252 lbs and as of today I am still at 229 lbs. Has anyone had this type of experience and how do you get back on track. I am angry because the surgery and healing time went so well but I did not expect to have a revision so soon after surgery!

For those who got reflux after banding - read this.

Hi this response is directed to Dustkicker and LoisinStA In my experience with the band, when my reflux kicks up, the band is too tight. Even though I can still eat and sometimes feel I could be a bit tigher... messing around with reflux and recognizing the signs are very important. Early last sommer I had been filled up to 6 cc's in a 10 cc band. thought I was doing great. Then all of a sudden this crazy reflux started, keeping me up all night no matter what. Two months in a row I had .5cc unfills and after a full cc was removed I felt relief. (I had just hit my 100 pound mark around this time). Then 6 months later during this holday season the reflux kicked back up bad. Even on Water, anything I ate came up my throat. All night long no matter how many hours before bed I stopped eating. I have been sitting sleeping up right since christmas. This last episode then progressed into crazy 24/7 heartburn and nothing would help it. I'm already on 40 mg's of Aciphex daily. I added 150 mg Zantac twice a day and was still in burning hell. I was on fluids for a week while I waited to get in and see my dr, and that seemed to quell most of it. I went to see my surgeon in early Jan and he removed 1 cc of fluid and ordered an upper GI. He thought I had Mega Esophogus (where my stomach uses my esophogus as an overflow resivoir basically) Mr surgeon said if this was the case, it would need to be removed. The upper GI came back and showed that my band had actually slipped. I'm dealing with that now... and working on getting unfills to see if that releives the reflux and heartburn, now i'm just at risk of having a revision surgery. The esophogial cancer threat scares me. I was so worried about damanging my espohogus as I know you can't fix it. My advise is not to mess with and just suffer through the reflux at the sake of wanting a tigheter stomach to eat less or be more restricted. It's not worth it. I totally felt I could control the reflux and I couldn't. I don't want unfills and I don't want another surgery. But I have to do what I have to do not to damage myself at the sake of keeping my weight loss.

    flipped port/twisted port

Teri, So the twisted port, it is okay now? Will it go back to normal? If they revise it, that means they go back in? I still look like I have a third boob. I swear I thought it would be hidden. Even so where the swelling is turns out the port is lower. If I try I can even feel it. But I do worry, which is why no sit ups. Teri, really, my stomach hangs so low anyway, will it really do any good. I have a Turkey Neck - gobble gobble gobble Hanging Turkey Arms Hanging tummy But my but and thighs are getting firm from walking. Hey I am over 50, I don't need a tight butt, I would like a less saggy neck though. Everyone tries to be helpful and they say, Oh you can take care of that. WHAT ANOTHER SURGERY. No way, I guess I will come to love the extra skin. Don't they have that squishy undies that sucks you in??? Besides, as down as I might get, when I see as I was told by my Band Buddy - two wet tube socks hanging from your chest, I remember my real reason for the band. To get healthy. I just have to keep my eye on the ball - a healthy heart. Sorry for being down, bad day, terrible day, shitty day, you pick the word. Debbie:blush:

    flipped port/twisted port

My port also flipped. I think the first day home after having the band placed. I felt it. I had the port revision and fill of 2cc. I went to doc yesterday and gained 1lb. I am so frustrated. I started exercising as told and I gained. I do not understand.
  21. 21 lbs the first month, I was a revision lap band to sleeve

    New Year Challenge

Finally broke my plateau! Down just over a lb only but I'll take it! It means it's going in the right directon. Plus I have a fill tomorrow! Brad, thanks, matey! I also hope I'll be at goal by the end of summer. And you're right I can't believe how much things have changed for us since August. I actually have an initial consult with a PS in late January, too. Very excited about that - I have quite a lot of loose skin, even from prior to my weight loss, from having 4 (big) babies. Well, to recap on the challenge for me: 0.4lbs from my first set goal of 10lbs, but 2.4lbs from my revised goal of 12lbs.

    ? About clearances

I would not recommend trying to do the clearances yet, as most of them have to be done within a certain time period before surgery. You never know if you're going to have a fight with insurance, like I did. I had to go back and forth with appeals for 3.5 months before I was approved for my revision, so if I'd tried to do my clearances early, I would have just had to do them all over again, since they all had to be done within 30 days prior to having surgery. Now, once you get your date, I would try to get them done ASAP, because there might be follow-up things that you have to do that may require some waiting (a sleep study, in my case). I only had 3 weeks notice, and I wasn't going to be able to get in to see my PCP for a week and a half, so I had to go to a new doctor for my lab tests. Luckily, I was able to get everything done in about 1.5-2 weeks (delayed a few days because my pulmonologist required me to go for the sleep study before she would clear me), so now I'm just waiting for everything to be forwarded to my surgeon's office on Monday.

    Gastric bypass 2008

This is a normal phenomenon in gastric bypass patients. It is called intestinal adaptation. Over the years, the small intestine of a person with a gastric bypass adapts to the malabsorption by increasing villi height and absorbing more calories. Enhanced caloric absorption = Weight regain (if you eat crap) It should be noted that those who strictly adhere to the "protein first" dietary mantra do not regain, even after 15 or 20 years out. However, consumption of sliders (crackers, chips, popcorn, etc.) spells trouble. I met someone who had gastric bypass in 2002. In 2011, during prolonged immobilization after fracturing her ankle, she regained 25 pounds in 6 weeks by grazing on potato chips. The weight regain was quizzically rapid. She got back on track and lost the weight, but her diet today consists strictly of lean meats and veggies. My point: once intestinal adaptation has occurred, a revision will not help if you consume snacky slider foods.
