What are the pains from? Gas, fullness, or surgery?
AZnikki replied to AZnikki's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
WOW...such varieties--I think I've figure out that its gas and surgery pains. I only wish I was burping more...then I might at least feel like the gas was escaping...my tummy is hard as a rock and bloated like crazy...more at times than at others. I've had no trouble walking--some pain when I first stand up but then it usually subsides. I take the liquid vicodin about twice a day rather than every 4 hours. I'm walking to mailbox several times per day and then went to WalMart and even Home Depot. Took Milk of Magnesia to get a BM going--wow...that worked...but still bloated. Never had shoulder pain--lots of back pain that same day of surgery, but after that, it's been okay...thankfully. HOT TEA is a GOD SEND to me!!!! Soothes heartburn, gas pains, aches, etc!!! EARL GREY with a touch of lemon is making me feel human again!!!!! Diet for Post Op weeks 1-3: Choose 2 oz. of cream of wheat, creamed Soup, pudding or yogurt for break, lunch and dinner. Throughout the day, try to get in 8 oz. of Protein drink. Also, can have 2 oz. of broth, tea, Water, coffee, crystal light, sf Jello, sf popsicles, etc. about 15 min after anything else. I'm definitely not starving...but geez, missing food at times :0( but I know I'm not doing all this for nothing!!! -
Liquid Diet Struggles
360lyMe replied to kafinator330's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on 3/1 and had no problem with the liquid diet, but my 1st day on soft foods (3/15) was horrible. I tried a little chicken salad and wasn't able to keep it down. Any chicken is still a definite NO for me. I'll be able to eat regular foods next week, but I'm scared to have anything but tuna, boiled eggs, and Greek yogurt since I know I can keep those down and they are high in protein. -

Protein and Carbs...Help!
jess9395 replied to DesertGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There’s debate on whether your carbs must be that low, what does your doctors plan say? I kept mine that low during my loss phase. Simple tweak is to get rid of the oatmeal. I didn’t add that back in till I was at goal. Check the carbs in your shakes, some are higher than others. I chose one with no carbs. Also check your soup, some have higher carbs than others. Does your Greek yogurt have added sugar? There’s another spot you could lower the carbs. -
Liquids after surgery
lauragshsu replied to suebydoo70's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon called is the "full liquid" phase. We were allowed to eat cream soups (like cream of mushroom, cream of potato, etc), yogurt, SF pudding and SF fudgesicles. -
Thank you all for your support and encouragement. Today has just been a really hard day for me and I can't shake this feeling right now. Since I have only been on soft and puree for the past 4 days I have eaten things like greek yogurt, babyfood meat, protein shakes and medifast oatmeal which has 11 grams of protein in it. So I don't think it is too much carbohydrates. I am not going to get on the scale until next Friday so I think that may help my overall mood. Any suggestions on how to get in more protein? I do a protein shot each day to supplement, but would like to do more. I don't know what I would do without this site to turn too. I just can't fail this time!

What does dumping syndrome feel like with the sleeve?
Tiffykins replied to ava2011's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dumping is really rare with the sleeve even though some report it. Considering only 30% of RNY'ers dump, the % is even lower for VSG'ers. However, I developed lactose intolerance and your symptoms sound more like lactose issue rather than dumping. I was able to eat cheese and yogurt, but milk would do me in every time. Reactive hypoglycemia can also be common with the sleeve especially further out, when you have heavy fat or sugar foods after months of not consuming those foods. The lactose intolerance lasted for about a year for me post-op, and I still couldn't drink a lot of milk, but at least I could have some. Around the 3rd month of my pregnancy, it's back in full swing. -
I had no idea about this, thank you. Ok, so then really, the only thing that was an "issue" was the sugars in the yogurt? I'll have to ask my nutritionist tomorrow when I see her about how she wants me to track fruits. I've been just looking at the grams of sugars, not the ingredients.

Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and tuna. No sugar added diced peaches and applesauce.

Questions to the ones who Had GASTRIC BYPASS!
spdmonkeymama replied to Missbeauty16's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm still waiting for approval and my date too.. I'm not "freaking out" exactly but the thoughts have been in the back of my mind.. But Monday I started a 2 wk preop diet the doc wants me to do for 4 weeks and it's not going so bad.. I have a very small selection I can chose 6 serv a day from.. But no meat.. Drinking all my Protein.. I figure I quit cigz cold turkey because I want this that bad.. I got this! And I feel like reading these forums have helped me wrap my head more around it already.. WE got this! Munky I had a very similar pre op. 4 Protein shakes a day 6 servings of : yogurt, applesauce, sf pudding, oatmeal, v8 juice. Then unlimited non starchy veggies and 80 Oz fluids. As far as gas pains go I had some of the worst. They got stuck in my ribs and didn't want to move. I am now dealing with some major back pain that has sidelined me the last 2 days. I'm 4 weeks post op As far as hunger goes I'm dealing with a lot of head hunger and wanting to push myself faster to healing. I've been allowed to resume working out slowly. But I have to consume more than 800 calories a day to workout. With the pain I'm not getting in nearly as much as I need. Sent from my SGH-M919 using the BariatricPal App -
Help, Please.
Lovergurl replied to Deleted Account's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You should try without the yogurt and the banana and the protein bar if it has high carbs. My Dr has me on the Atkins phase 1 and it's working. I did have one last "weekend" of splurging but then got to business at the two month point. My attitude is this is my new life. I better get used to it. I do drink a lot of water. Still having a morning coffee with just cream. And, I'm having lots of veggies if I'm craving a bit less protein. Cravings are gone. I'm staying at about 1200 cal a day. YES that tired feeling is there, its the lack of carbs. But it seems to be just in the morning. By the end of the day, I have plenty of energy. But bed time comes and I am out like a light, getting plenty of sleep. There could be a dozen different things to cause you to not lose. Try more protein, more movement, more water. But the one guy is right. Read what he is saying not how he is saying it. You have to get through this rough patch to prepare yourself for surgery. It's important to lower your risks and that needs to be your focus. One step at a time. -
You will be surprised once you start reading the ingredients. I just looked at a yogurt the other day. I thought the sugar was from the strawberries, but no, it had "cane sugar" listed. There is so much added sugar in everything. It's ridiculous.

Snacking - hard time staying full :/
Myonlybattle replied to shahada's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I can relate to OP's dilemma! I can't eat more than a few bites of meat protein then feel stuffed. But an hour later I'm hungry again. And keeping it real I will fill up on the snack food because it feels good to eat something and not feel stuffed after a few bites. I'm 6 months out. I have been trying to deal with this recently so that I don't end up in trouble eating carbs and junk food all day. What has been helping me is having a Premier Protein shake in the morning after my coffee -- 30 g of protein in me and I feel full for a long time - I need to sip it over an hour or so because it will give me a stomach ache if I just drink it down. According to my NUT, I should not be having shakes this late in the game, but I'm doing what works. Dannon Light and Fit Greek Yogurt (80 calls/12 g protein) is also a good snack and has good flavor choices. And I love the Cabot 50% cheddar cheese in the individual servings (50 calories, 5 or 6 g protein I think). Just offering what works for me because I think at this stage in the process we all need variety -- I know the above things work for me but I get sick of having them all the time and that's why I've been reaching for the Doritoes/cookies/other horrible choices. Good Luck! -

Liver Shrink Diet causing Liver enzymes to be high?
Elizabethrrt posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was supposed to have Surgery Sept 9 of this year and started the Liver Shrink diet Aug 10. I have stuck with this diet even though the first week was VERY hard. It consist of a Protein shake for Breakfast and lunch, a small fruit and 1 cup yogurt for snack, 6oz meat 1 cup salad greens with 1 tablespoon fat free dressing 1 cup certain veggies and 2 carbs for dinner, and a Protein Shake for an evening snack. I went to get my preop lab work done and then the day before surgery was to happen, it was canceled due to my liver enzymes were too high. Back in June my liver was in perfect shape. Enzymes were fine and ultrasound was fine and now they are very high. I think this could be the diet doing this but my dietitian does not think it is so they want me to continue the diet until I get released from my PCP. They are going to check my enzymes again Monday and if they are down my PCP will give the ok for surgery and surgery will be on the 30th. Has anyone else ever had trouble with the diet causing your enzymes to be high? Thanks for your input Elizabeth -
Has anyone on here had trouble with diarreha after surgery and how come the pants I wore right before surgery fit and now that I'm down 24 lbs. there to tight? How strange is that? :sneaky: Does every doctor have a different post op diet for their patient's because as I read alot of the threads here everyone seems to be able to consume creamy broths and yogurt right after surgery? I'm still only able to have clear liquids, clear broths, jello and my protein shakes for about 2-3 weeks, then I can graduate to creamy soups and semi-solid mushies. I would kill to be able to have a creamy soup, but I don't want to screw up the doc's orders. Any info would be appreciated.

Hey! I'm almost at 5 weeks and am feeling pretty good. I have the same type of thing around my incisions. They're not very itchy but a little red and flaky. The doctor said they looked normal so I'm trying not to worry myself. Milk of Magnesia was my method of choice for not being able to do my duty. I took it for a couple days in weeks one and two but haven't had to since. Not being able to go to the bathroom can actually make you feel naseuous so maybe that's contributing. Try adding some milled flax seed to your yogurt (or anything creamy really). The nutritionist said it was a good fiber choice because it's already broken down. Also, the high fiber wheat thins instead of crackers. They're really tasty and may help keeping you regular. As for the pickle...YES...it totally can help an upset stomach. My little brother actually turned me onto pickle juice when I was younger and I started to notice that whenever I had any nausea, it was the only thing that could make it feel better. Anyone stalled in their weight loss right now? I hit the 21 lb mark then stopped losing and actually gained a few pounds back. I know this is the healing time but I'm just wondering if anyone else is seeing this or has any tips about it.

Weight Issues in Americans vs other countries
Sunta replied to cashley's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
When I flew to London, I stopped over in Paris, and in the airport, they had these little lunch places. The French people were sitting in there eating these tiny slices of pizza, like the size if you cut one of our regular slices of pizza into three, and that was their one piece. The yogurt containers were about three ounces, and the sodas were about 6 ounces. I never saw anything like it. I also read an article once that said the average caloric intake for a French person is 1,200 per day! When they're not on a diet! In the same article, it said these French people went into a Mcdonald's and ordered a happy meal and they were "stuffed". In another article I read, a British woman and her mother came here to the states and went out to dinner, and when the plates came out, they burst out laughing because they thought it was a joke because the portions were so enormous. They were horrified to find out that it was a "normal" restaurant portion. When a friend of mine (who is very slender and eats very sparingly as it is) went to Paris, he stayed with a friend, and the friend would give him a tiny slice of quiche for breakfast, and my friend was ready to pass out! His friend was disgusted with him for being hungry all the time. The French also do not snack in between meals, ever. In my old job a few years ago, there was an intern from France, and one day we ordered Chinese food. It came in one of those round metal containers (about 10 inches in diameter). She said to me "no offense, but I have to say, you Americans wonder why you're all so fat, and the reason is this" (she pointed to the container) "Back home", she said "this would be lunch for me and four other people. Here, it's lunch for one person." Also, I met a girl from Germany who had moved here to the states, and she said that since coming here, she had gained 18 pounds without changing her portion sizes or the type of foods she normally ate back home. She attributed this weight gain to the fact that all of our food is so heavily processed. She said in the UK, all foods are fresh and often organic, and that they purchase foods fresh every day instead of relying on canned, frozen, and boxed foods like we do here. So, my two cents is that yes, we eat waaaaay more than the rest of the world and our food is crap. My best friend is Indian, and she said their plates are much, much smaller, and their large pizza is the size of an individual pizza here. Also, she says all their food is fresh and unprocessed. I believe that if Americans ate like the rest of the world, a large percentage of obesity would go away. -
I have tried yoplait Greek yogurt and it is pretty good? Anyone else try other brands? What's the best?
-
Chobani and now I am in love with Noosa, its a Australian yogurt, I add a scoop of unflavored protein to it as well as 1/4C of fresh fruit.....its great!
-
A lot depends on your doctor's schedule for food transitions, at 2 weeks, I would have had to puree the soups and couldn't have noodles. I could have yogurt, unsweetened applesauce, cream-of-wheat or thinned oatmeal, basically anything that had a "blended" texture.
-
The protein cereal doesn't sound so good. I guess it will be oatmeal as usual. After surgery I don't like eggs too much. I have cooked them thinking I will eat them, and end up throwing them away. I am not, or ever been much of a yogurt eater. I am lactose intolerant, and have tried those, but I don't like it. I did end up buying the caramel flavored Fairlife Protein Shake (someone on here told me about it), and I do like that one. I have not tried the chocolate yet. Funny how our taste changes after surgery.

Day 3 - How on Earth Am I Supposed to Eat 65 g of Protein
LadyMaggie replied to hockeymother's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, one scoop of the unjury (*unflavored*) Protein powder has about 21 grams of protein; Add it to 1/2 cup of o. j. in the morning; yogurt for snack; and to one other item you eat for dinner. voila you have 63 grams of protein -
I'm so sorry for your loss. As for foods I'm in the soft purée stage, I have 2-3 protein shakes a day, Incan eat eat beaters with cheese, grits, cream of rice. I recently made turkey salad in my food processor it was so good! I feel in love with Dannon light and fit Greek vanilla yogurt. I have had decaf tea and coffee. I say practice to eat slow and chew thoroughly, and once surgery is finished sip and walk, my first two weeks I kept water bottles in every room. I was afraid of getting dehydrated. I can manage 50-64oz a water. ALWAYS remember we are all different, and our tastes and needs vary. All the best to you. Karen
