Hello everyone, I had my sleeve done on May 23rd,2011 at 2:45pm at Scripps Mercy Hospital. My surgeon is Dr. Laurance Tanaka. My beginning weight was 223 pounds. I am 5'6" and 51 years old. The surgical experience and the staff were great. I have not had any problems or complications. I stayed in the hospital for four days. The night of surgery I was up walking with my iv pole in tow. I walked several times a day while admitted and attended the exercise class offered for post surgical patients. My one week discharge appointment yielded a 14.5 pound weight loss. I encourage everyone to comply with the program. Follow your doctors instructions, exercise (walk), and stay hydrated. I am now intaking about 40 ounces of fluid daily. My diet is one protein shake a day and all protein soft foods. Currently I am eating fat free cottage cheese, mashed beans, greek yogurt, soft fish, shrimp, scallops, and crab meat. Eggs and tofu are encouraged however I don't like either. My next appointment is June 29th and I will be introduced to more foods. I look at this opportunity as a new beginning and I look forward to returning to my previous vigor. I am happy to be on this site and I will answer any questions.

That is so absolutely fantastic! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! And congratulations on your accomplishment. 3 years...that is awesome. I am 56 and my only regret is that I didn't do this sooner.....but I was not ready sooner. Glad to see you say you did it for you. I know for myself that I had to do this for me and me alone. If I did it for anyone else I would cheat when they are not around. Built my life on faking for so long but this is for me and this is for real. Yes this sleeve is truly a blessing and I entend to see it through to goal and beyond. Much hugs to ya Suzanne!

If you have excellent credit (like I do) then you don't need to get a "medical procedure loan" unless you just want to do that! When I checked on those the interest rate was much higher than I was able to get on my credit card. I have 3 major credit cards. I called each of them and told them I was about to make a major purcchase of $14000... and what could they offer me in terms of special interest rates, etc. I ended up with 9 months at 0%, then 8.9% after that. The 'loan' was 14.9%! Shop around.

I've struggled with my weight since puberty. When I was younger, I was always in state of weight change - I was either losing or gaining. I never learned how to maintain my weight. I'm in my early 40's now and I have been losing and gaining the same 25 pounds for over 10 years. Like many of you, I have tried so many diets - Weight Watchers, Atkins, Jenny Craig (on which I gained weight), Slimfast. I've tried walking, Pilates videos, gym memberships. The only physical activity that I enjoy is swimming/water aerobics. I can stick to a diet plan, but not to an exercise plan. I have learned so many ways to talk myself out of exercising. In the recent past, I have had the most success with an appetite suppressant which my PCP prescribed. For many good reasons, he will not prescribe it for more than 3 months; nor do I want to be on a dangerous medication. I recently changed jobs and my new health insurance may cover WLS. Since I did well with the diet pills, I think that the Lap Band will be finally be a solution for me. If my physical hunger is under control, I can overcome the mindless eating due to boredom, the emotional eating, and stress induced carb binges. Next week I have a sleep study to confirm a diagnosis of sleep apnea. (My prior health insurance's meager contribution to that test had made it unaffordable.) The morning after the test, my husband and I are attending the WLS surgery seminar at Cleveland Clinic - Florida.

Hi All! I was banded on August 7, 2009. I used to read these boards all the time, and they were immensely helpful. The past year I've been slacking big time. I've been on a bit of a weight-loss rollercoaster, mostly because I wasn't being serious about my weight loss goals and letting stress overtake me by resorting to stress eating. I just got married a month ago, and now that all that hoopla is over I'm fresh out of excuses! I've lost 162 pounds (132 with the band), and gained 13 of it back surrounding the wedding. With all the yo-yo-ing I've only lost 20 pounds in the past year...somewhat successful, but I can do so much better! Started getting back on track this week and down 4 pounds already! (I know, mostly Water weight, but it's a start). I'm hoping to keep myself accountable by getting on the boards regularly and sharing with others.

Cliff Notes for Lapband
TwinMom74 replied to Beautifulchaos0420's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
First, you should call up the insurance to find out if your particular policy covers Bariatric Surgery, if so I recommend you obtain a copy of the Bariatric Policy and educate yourself on the requirments. Once you find out your insurance covers the surgery, immediately call your surgeon. Some require you attend their WLS seminar prior to giving you an appointment. The way I went about mine, was getting the policy reading it. At the same time made the appointment to attend the seminar and the next day, called my surgeon to make the appointment. Since the appointment was 3 weeks out, and I already had read what my insurance company required, I made the appointment with my primary for bloodwork, referral paperwork and EKG. Got the appointment for 3 days afterwards. Also called and made the appointment with the pyschologiest for 5 days after the seminar. Obtained my weight lost history from weight watchers. By the time I saw my surgeon 3 weeks after attending her seminar, all my paperwork/results were in her office. They submitted 1 week later and 8 days later I was approved. Best of luck on your journey! -
When you dont have the support
sparkplug replied to ash marie's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
You sound quite young since you are depending on what mom and dad are saying about the surgery. I on the other hand am old enough to know better, I am 58. Before we left New York I was okayed for gastric bypass and did not want that but the band and after going through all the hoops and testing was okayed but backed out at the last minute just before we moved to AZ. I thought at that time that it would be easy to get approval out here when I started working and could get the band. Well, it took another 2 1/2 years before I could get the approval for the band and my Dr. specifically said that gastric was not the answer for me but the band would be better. The Dr. was so right and I am thrilled to be in the position of not being on a diet and at almost 3 years of being at goal, I feel like a million dollars. Go with your heart and the Dr's advice on what is best for you and do it. I wish I had done this when I was young instead of doing the yo yo dieting thing for my whole life. Good luck in your decision and just keep a positive attitude in whatever choice you make. -
Hi, I am new here and need some advice :0)

Hi, my name is Isabelle and l am also new here :0). Since I had my gall bladder taken out, quit smoking and had a baby at the age of 35 I am not Isabelle anymore. My weight is 233 (!!!) pounds and I have never felt so bad, mad and helpless in my entire life! I spoke with my bank teller 2 weeks ago and she told me about her story and the lap band. She was a 220 pound girl 1 year ago and now she is a size 0. She looks amazing and this is my goal! I need to loose this weight and I am very freaked out, that a lap band would not work for me. Since I am not eating all day, can it be that in my situation it is a hormonal thing? Does anyone know? I am very excited to be here and I hope for lots of info. Have a good night, Isabelle -

Not doing too well!

NO NEGATIVE HERE, please don't beat yourself up. i'm almost a month Post-Op and yes i did cheat on my Pre-Op Liquid Diet, i think you'll find alot of people that do and have. Even after surgery it's hard because at least for me i had to go back on the clear liquid diet for another 2 weeks and then 1 weekof full liquids after that. So yes i completly understand and was right where you were and just here to say this to shall pass and you will get over, around, and pass this also ! this is why we are here and get banded in the first place. i also felt like a failure and was wondering how in the heck am i going to make it later if i can't now? it's a learning process and although it's a struggle everyday it also gets better everyday. Hang In there you'll do fine ! Dr.Ernest C. Rehnke Palms Of Pasadena St.Petersburg, Fl. -
went for my first post op check up, it's been 3 weeks since my surgery and I've lost 18lbs. but suddenly I'm able to eat more. I don't go for a fill for 3 more weeks...really anxious, wondering what's in store! This website is very informative though, glad I found it!!:car:

Hi all!! I was recently banded on April 18, 2012. My band is currently empty. My first follow up appointment with my doctor was on May 1, 2012 and he indicated that I should come back in four weeks and we will discuss then whether I need an adjustment. He indicated that some people don't need any adjustments and that the band itself gives enough restriction. Although, I have lost 10 pounds, my problem is that I feel hungry quite a bit. I am only eating twice a day, but at this point I moved onto solids and I am not having any difficulties at all. Sometimes I am still hungry after and think that my portions are more than they should be (ie 1.5-2 cups). I know that I am not getting in enough fluids and I have had virtually no Protein drinks at all because no matter what I do I just don't like the smell or the texture of them which is why I am trying to get protein in during the two meals I eat. I did discuss the Protein Drinks with my doctor and he said that I need protein so try to find something I like and that was it. I meet with my nutritionist next week. I am pretty sluggish and tired and wonder if it is normal. I also get gas pains everytime I eat but not enough to discourage the eating! Did anyone have similar problems? Should I have lost more weight then 10 pounds? Thank you! So excited to have this forum available to me!

Hi everyone, I hope im doing this right. I've decided to join and get some support. I had lapband surgery on 4-18,and I have lost 11 pounds since the surgery. I started with a physician (not the surgeon) weight loss program for three months as directed by my insurance company. I lost about 10 pounds on it. After the three months, I went to see the surgeon, Dr. John Baker, prior to my surgery date. He put me on protein shakes for two weeks prior to the surgery and I lost 15 pounds. The day befor surgery, I did clear liquids and lost a few more pounds, so i'm looking at about a 30 lb loss since February. It was recommended that I have gastric bypass for the amount of weight I have to lose, but I was totally against it. These past 12 days have been interesting. My core has been especially tender, but im walking 40 minutes per day as the doctor instructed. I am on sugar free, fat free full liquids. On Thursday I can advance to soft diet and I am excited. I am almost ready to come off of my BP meds ALREADY!!!!!!

I Am On The Mushies And It Is Only Day 8
MandaElaine replied to Fishes1971's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My dr gave me sheet on what and what not to eat. I officially start my pre-op diet on Wednesday. My first vist my dr told me to start working on smaller bites, lots of chewing and only sipping at meals. So my main focus for 3 months were those 3 things. -
I went to my family doctor every month to weigh in for 6 months. Only to find out that those visits didn't count and I was denied. I then went to a nut that specialized in weight loss surgery, she had me keep journals of my feelings, my food, my exercise...anything that had to deal with my struggle of being over weight. I did this for 6 months. After finishing with her and she submitted the paperwork to the insurance, I had to appeal the first denial and was approved in a month and had surgery within 2 weeks there after. So I suggest going to a nut that is familiar with weight loss surgery. good luck to you

Can anyone point me in the right direction where the pinned thread is at for the list needed before surgery? I've been looking everywhere and can't find it. I leave for surgery 2 weeks from Monday!! I have been looking at the list of foods at the different stages my Dr. recommends and find it odd he only wants me on Clear liquids for 2 days and starting mooshies within 8 days.... just seems early to me.

Well, just a quick update. I called the Dr.'s office to make sure everything is in order for next week. After the false start w/the last surgeon, I guess I have kind of been waiting for something else to happen. One week from tonight, I will be in Dallas where I will have my pre-op appt w/the surgeon and then surgery on the 22nd. It's going to be a little nerve wracking I think going by myself. So far the folks I have been working with at the hospital over the phone have been great. They have made arrangements to hold onto my laptop until I get out of surgery. Since I will be by myself, it will help me feel a little connected. I've only told about 3 of my friends and so I won't be calling a laundry list of people while I'm down there.

Well, it's 9:43pm 6/20 and I just arrived in Dallas in prep for surgery. I have a pre-op visit in the morning, paperwork at the hospital in the afternoon and then surgery Wednesday. What has surprised me the last few days is the emotional roller coaster I have been going through. This is a revision albeit from 13 years ago- but I am feeling really scared. I have to be honest, I went on blind faith back then from that Dr. about the procedure and believed pretty much what he told me. I was in my early twenties and pretty naive. I guess since I have done a tremendous amount of research this time around both on the procedure and the surgeon that you would think I would feel at ease. Maybe its going several hundred miles where I will not know anybody as I go through this process. Part of me has a fear that something will go wrong. For the first time in my life I finally did a living will and a will which I just finished last week. I guess some people can talk about death pretty easily and matter of fact. I am not married, don't have any kids- but I do have horses, a handicapped dog and 3 cats that depend on me. They have become my "kids" if you will. I guess going through this whole process has been a little difficult. I feel stupid when I get all teared up. This morning when I was getting ready to drop my handicapped dog off with a friend, I had a mini-melt down. So, me and my dog Mattie sat on the couch and cuddled for a bit. I guess she sensed something was up. I guess it just sux to not have any family or loved ones who can little more than offer me a "good luck" bone. Don't get me wrong, I have good friends, but they all have their own families and their own commitments. And, I hate to burden people and so to be fair sometimes people don't know the weight I carry on some of these things and I don't mean the physical kind as much as the emotional. Partly because I know there isn't much they can do anyways... I just hope I don't break down tomorrow at the Dr's office because they are gonna think I'm nuts. They might be in the middle of talking about something totally casual and I can just see it now, the Water works start flowing..... Well, let's hope to getting through tomorrow without any waterworks.

I have a somewhat physically demanding job. Any thoughts on how to track my exercise for the day at work? I'm on my feet all day, walking, twisting, turning and lifting parts that are anywhere from 3-75 lbs a day.

Have a Date (again)
feedyoureye replied to former_vbg's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Just a heads up, I couldn't stand anything sweet the first few weeks... Half and half on the crystal light might work better... bring a jug of water anyway just in case. I would think getting out and stretching now and then would be a great idea...even without surgery! A good pillow to support your stomach when you move around too... and to sleep on! You are not driving are you? -
Thank you! I got the results of the pre-op blood work back Friday and everything looks pretty good. Cholesterol was a bit elevated, Iron a little low- but nothing my PCP said was to be real alarmed about. I went and did a little "pre-surgery" shopping today, and stocked up on the sugar free Jello, broth, crystal lite, lite applesauce, etc. I bought a light and comfy robe, and some new sweat pants (old ones were getting pretty old). I figure I will be wearing sweats for at least the first several days. Especially for the drive home. One thing I find a little interesting is in the paperwork for the post-surgery diet is my doc seems to be ok with pretty much any kind of Soups (non-chunky) but no reference to calories, carbs or sodium. Since I am an out of state patient, I will be meeting with one of his nutritionists the day before surgery to cover things in more detail and I wonder if she/he will zero in on the restrictions a bit more. So, I held on on buying any soups knowing sodium causes people to retain Water, and of course high carbs wouldn't be good either. For the drive home after my post-op check up w/my Dr., I was thinking I would plan on having plenty of Crystal Lite handy. It is about an 8 1/2 hr drive, but I'm wondering if it will take me longer if they ask me to stop every 2 or 3 hrs to get out and walk about for a bit to avoid blood clots.

For shakes I have a few options. I did buy a couple sample packs of unjury (http://www.unjury.com/store/protein/)and nectar powder (http://www.vitacost.com/syntrax-nectar-whey-protein-isolate-powder-twisted-cherry)Protein. I am actually trying my first nectar one tonight in the pink grapefruit flavor. I can't decide if I like it or not. It's tangy and sweet and I think it's a yes, but I'm only like 2 bites in, so I'll give a more clear answer once I'm through it I guess. I also own just a basic whey protein random brand from Meijer that is vanilla flavored that I can mix with pretty much anything. This is gonna sound a little weird, but I've been having a lot of trouble getting protein in. My mom came up with the idea of taking plain greek yogurt (I like the brand Fage, but any would work) that has no fruit and mixing it with the protein powder packet (or a serving size of the powder if you have the big jar) and then adding a little bit of milk to make it into like a thin yogurt consistency. Just mixing 1 packet + 1 yogurt + a few teaspoons of milk makes about 3 small meal size servings that pack a ton of protein. When she mixed the plain yogurt with the vanilla protein powder she added a teaspoon or so of strawberry Jello that'd already set and that gave it a little bit of flavor contrast. As long as it is thin and has no fruit chunks my doctor's office considers yogurt part of a full liquid diet. It has gone done smooth and I haven't had any issues. You could also just mix the protein powder with a little bit of milk or a little bit of Water.
