    Teen who has unsupportive family.

Im 18 too and im getting my band in Dec. too...at first my dad was so against it, he also said that I havent even tried to loose the weight on my own but I gave him my reasons and though he still feels like I shouldnt get it, I know he knows my reasons and that all I need. Once you start loosing weight, they will see and change in you and then they will understand. I hope everything gets better for you. Just be honest

    Is this restriction?

I find that certain things sit differently in my pouch and restriction is not really a factor. Things like triscuits sit heavy and now after several fills so do things like cheez-its - both of which are not the best of band foods. Chicken wings sound delicious!! I got stuck on them once, because I forgot and ate the skin...not a good idea!

    Started Training!

Hey Pranjala This is the first time I've exercised since 2009. I waited until my one month anniversary got clearance and am not stopping (LOL).According to my doc the plication will help us loose 60-70pounds without exercise but after that it's all up to us. I think that the first 3months are crucial so I want to loose as much as possible. Good luck to you!! You will feel great when you see the pounds come off.

New to forum and I am failing....

Chin up darlin, you are not alone, I am banded three weeks out and I am starving I have gained 6 lbs and well I too am frustrated, but you know that this was a lifetime committment that you decided to do. :thumbup:The band is a tool and it will start working, have faith. FAILING???:tt1::smile: There is nothing you have done that should give you the impression that you failed, if you would be eating bon bons and junk and not loosing I could see it but your out there doing activities eating right and following the rules. As for your son take it from the mouth of babes, and you know what all the kids liked you! For you! Now when the new improve mom comes they will still like you. You are a strong independent woman who is doing this for the betterment of herself! Will you fall back or stumble duhhh :blink:yes!!!! We all do but you brush yourself off and hold your head high and go on! Your band will adjust and you will loose, but remember the slower the lost the better your skin will fall into place. Now go cry, yell and throw a tantrum because we all need to do that once in a while. Then wash your face, and put on a smile and SUCCEED!!! :tongue2:I know you can do it~~~~ In the Band we trust Sandee
  6. I need help, I just had another fill and im up to 6ml in a 10ml band. Previously at 5ml, I could eat small amounts, I would get the full feeling and my portion sizes dropped and I was loosing good weight. I could comfortably eat when I chewed etc. Now with 1 extra mil in my band I have problems eating soft fruit, yoghurt, even drinking some things, I only have to take 1 bite of food, chew and most of the time it gets stuck and I end up vomiting, then sometimes I can eat, but it feels like im swallowing a golf ball and I get pains in my chest but the food does go down. When I can eat without problems (only sometimes) I still get an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach. Is this to tight? Or is this the right restriction, it hasnt been the most pleasant experience and I'm almost waiting 15 minutes inbetween bites.
  7. How long after surgery did you start exercising? And what have you done to help with loose skin? Thank you!

Advice and Opinions Welcome... and needed

Hello I had a low BMI and i was self pay. I only paid $5500 in Mexico, and I didn't have to go through any approvals either. I know some people frown up at the thought of going to Mexico but I actually had a wonderful experience. Dr. Jose Rodriguez, he is the doctor on you tube performing the single port band which is what I also got. The hospital was state of the art, clean, the nurses were nice and my husband and I felt very safe. I will go back for my first fill under xray and it will only cost me about $150 instead of $400 to $500 that is charged in the US for self pay. Some people may think I don't need to loose any weight but I do for health reasons. Oh don't let me forget to mention that that price included 2 night stays for my husband and I in the hospital. VERY NICE!!!!! Good luck in your decision.

frothing it happens 2 the best of us

I hear ya - just when I think maybe I am able to eat too much food...then I have another day where I don't want to eat hardly anything....so as long as I am still loosing the doc said not to worry about coming back for a fill. (which is fine by me as it costs me a co pay every time I walk thru his doors) I hate the sliming, tho...it happens to me once in awhile, too.

    Is fried/grilled tofu a mushy?

I LOVE tofu teriyaki and from my experience with that, I have to say that tofu itself is a mushy, but that yummy crunchy skin really isn't . Can you pry the tofu away from the skin ? take care
  11. I have been banded since October 3rd, and everything has been rolling along smoothly...until recently. Last week I went snow shoeing and the next day my port area was bugging me. It felt like a dull ache; kind of like I had pulled something. It went away after a few days and I forgot about it. A few days ago the pain came back but it was a lot worse, and when I touched my port area it felt like my port was bulging out from under my skin. I have to admit that I really never touched my port before; I figured that if I just let it do it's thing we would get along just fine without getting too personal. I hate the idea of having to touch something foreign in my body. However due to the pain that I am in I have now been forced to explore my port and it feels like there is a big round lump under my skin. Is it suppose to be flat on top, or is it suppose to be round? I know this is so sad that I have to even ask this question, because I should know how it is suppose to feel! If anyone can shed some light on this I would sleep better tonigiht. Is it normal to have a dull ache around your port? I know my doctor did not stitch it down, so I can move it a bit with my fingers (side-to-side.)

    Thigh and arm surgery

flower they have surgeries where they make an incision, remove excess skin and then suture your skin back together. The incision for the arms would be under your arm so it is least viewable. Same with the thigh area. Don't worry there is a way to fix it when your ready!!!!!!! http://www.infoplasticsurgery.com/bodycontouring/armlift.html http://www.advanced-art.com/ThighPlasty.htm M

    same fat, new world

I also had band removal and sleeve. I suffered with acid reflux at first. It has gradually gotten better. I feel like I wasted 6 yrs w band. It was so miserable. I am so nervous about not loosing the weight with this!
  14. Hello, I am in the early stages of going through this process. I have Tricare Prime and just received my refferal letter from them. I also just attended my first dietary counseling session and she actually told me not to loose any weight because I am right at 40% BMI. But I also have severe arthritis in both knees and asthma and am well over 100lbs over weight so I think I am safe. I have a physical Aug 12; Seminar the 16th, and surgeon visit the 19th.... How long will this whole process take before I can get a surgery date?

What Happens When The Weight Is Off?

Perfectly reasonable questions, so don't feel silly. After you reach goal you can have a little of your saline removed, if you like, but the band stays in place. Otherwise you would soon begin to eat like a lumber jack again. The band does not "cure" whatever defect it is that makes us want to overeat. It just keeps us from fulfilling that desire. The port is the mechanism for adding/removing saline. It is stitched to muscle just under the skin and feels a bit like a 9 volt battery, if you press on it. Sex is no more dangerous with the band than without. In fact, it's probably safer, once you lose some of those extra pounds. It's certainly more enjoyable. (I would know this because I have lost 97 pounds and my husband has lost 74.)
  16. Yeah, I was a little shocked. I went to a guy that was an hour from home in a small rural NC tone because he was in-network for my insurance so I guess I shouldn't have been too surprised. At least he cut me loose rather than try to convert me or tell me I am headed to hell. I have to be grateful for that
  17. Have you spoke to your dr about this? Have you had a fill? If so you need to call and schedule another one... Everybody is different. Keep doing what you're doing as far as exercising it'll start back coming off.. and I think the 5 day pouch test is a good idea.. go back on full liquids and see what happens, I had my first fill on the 15th of June, and the dr put me back on liquids, then mushies... The first 4 days of liquids I lost 5 lbs,, but I must admit, I thought I was going to die, becasue I was soooo hungry,, Aw man, I thought I wouldn't make it....you can do it.. don't give up.. I'm on my first full day of mushies, probably want loose any, but don't give up.. Be encouraged you can do it...this website really helps me a lot and encourages me.. Thanks to all the bandsters...

when to incorporate strength training post-op

According to my doctor, lose skin has to do with age and genetics. However, strength training is good to "help" with the matter, if you will. My surgeon gave me the green light to start at the next week (it will be 3 weeks). I am 29, and had no complications at all, however, so that may be why. Just do what the surgeon says...it could be different for everybody:)
  19. Yes, caught a bacteria infection at the port site but under the skin so there was nothing I could do. I got my 1st fill today and realized there was still some drainage but the dr said that will dry up on it's own.
  20. Hi, I’m looking for advice. I weigh 11 stone 11 pounds and I’m booked in to have gastric band surgery in less than a week. As it gets nearer to the time I’m starting to have second thoughts. I have been trying to loose weigh all my life but I just can’t. I know I’m now very overweight but I really want to loose 3 stone. Am I crazy to do this?? I’d love some advice because I’m feeling very nervous. Thank you in advance
  21. I have tried everything in the book since I was 8 years old to loose weight. Now at 34 I am 235 pounds and have made the decision to get banded. I come from a family where hitting 300 lbs as a woman is not rare, and that scares me to death. I have my surgical consult next week and will hopefully have my surgery near the middle of May. Each and every post here has made my decision an easier one. Yes I am scared and worried, but to hear how so many people have responded so well to the procedures makes me feel better. I am newly separated and have twin 5 year olds, so the cost is going to hurt. However, I want to run around with my kids and enjoy every minute with them. Right now mommy comes home from work and naps on the couch while they watch tv or play on the computer. That's no life for them or me! But to be totally honest, I also want this for ME. I am embarking on a new life and this body just doesn't fit the person I am hoping to be - happy, confident, energized, attractive. Yay for those of you have made the decison and yay for us who are right behind you!
  22. Hi, tightening the muscles is called a platysmaplasty, and that is done if it's needed (like everything else in PS!). Sometimes the issue is excess skin, sometimes its excess fat, or excess muscle laxity...or a combination. I tailor the procedure to correct the problem issues. I usually do the face very last..after the body work...as changes in wieght (i.e. loss) after the body procedures is common and it will really show on the face.

    New and different case

As long as you acknowledge that not every sleeve patient loses their hunger, and you find a doctor that within his ethics would perform this surgery, then I wish nothing but the best for you. I still believe that no surgery will cure this compulsive eating, and habits that you seem to want to minimize because you've tried counseling and it didn't work, counseling doesn't cure the disorder, but it gives you coping skills/mechanisms that you can overcome some of the compulsive behavior. I think my biggest concern is that some people do struggle with maintenance. I am one of those people unfortunately. Since you only 30lbs to lose, if you were to lose 60 would you then technically be underweight? I'm not underweight, but I have bones protruding including my ribs, backbones, shoulderblades, wrists and ankles are nothing but bone/skin. It is not something that I recommend anyone having to go through when they slip down into the "too small" zone. It's emotionally and mentally exhausting. I understand being proactive, but I honestly can not imagine having 85% of my stomach removed to lose 30lbs with zero guarantee that I would lose my hunger. Yes, I am one of the fortunate ones that has lost their hunger, but if you stick around, or do more research, you'll find others do not lose it. Also, mentally, the sleeve definitely does not resolve head hunger at all. I'm not trying to discourage you completely, but I think it's only fair that you have a full "eyes wide open" of this surgery, and life post op. It's not easy, it's not a quick fix. Even though you state that you don't want to eat junk food, or suck down a milkshake, unfortunately, you can not predict your behavior until you are faced with the fact that you can not consume 6lbs of broccoli to soothe the hunger, or compulsive desire. If counseling, dieting, and other attempts haven't stopped you from doing this, you could very well find a way to continue this learned behavior with the sleeve.
