6 weeks post op ZERO WEIGHT LOSS AND DEPRESSED
SleeveMeToIt replied to crazycatladycanada's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi there! Just sending you a bunch of support because I can imagine how frustrated you are. I've been stalled for 2.5 weeks - since week 2. Have lost 13lbs since surgery day and I'm about 4.5 weeks out and losing my mind. I knew to expect the stalls, but they are major mind f*cks when you feel like you are doing everything right. I hope you and your team of docs and dietician can find out what's going on and that weight loss starts back up soon. In the meantime, forget the scale and keep focus on your daily behaviors- sounds like you're doing well at that. My scale is in the back of my closet because I can't take the idea of this drastic effort not working. Here's to hoping for a big whoosh soon! -
Hi all! This is my first post! Just a question for you all. How long is your stomach swollen after surgery? For all of my “stomach sleepers” how long before you were able to lay on your stomach? (I’m in week 5, by the way!)
-
I guess just not waking up, any doubts or concerns about complications I looked up and informed myself before opting for surgery. Since I'm self paid everything is moving in terms of weeks, so currently worrying about having vitamins, containers, scheduling clearances and doing a trip I had schedule before the preop diet starts, which keeps the mind busy. I haven't gotten to the exercise part since I'm only on day 5 post op, other than walking. My surgeon wanted us walking 2 miles 4 to 5 times a week within 3 to 4 weeks post op. After the 4 week mark, I plan on going to the gym and meeting with a trainer to get a more personalized plan. Especially while healing. Another option might be YouTube workouts that are geared towards wls? I haven't looked yet, but I think I might tonight.

October 2022 surgery support

Three's near stomach may have gotten upset is because what I was told was clear liquid for the first week so sugar free popsicles sugar free Jello low sodium broth and plenty of whey protein isolate protein powder -
I am in the same boat with you. Dr said between weeks 3-5 it will stall out then pick back up. I’m 4 1/2 weeks post bypass and only lost 16 since surgery. I have lost inches and forgot to measure before I started my journey. But I did measure a week ago so I know going forward. I did take before pictures and current pictures and can tell a difference. That what I look at to keep me going so that I won’t worry about the scale. All this protein is helping to build muscle and it weighs more than fat.

When did your program give you the OK to take vitamins?
ms.sss replied to raspberrylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was advised to take them as soon as I got home (i.e., tue day after surgery). And yes, they made me nauseous…particularly the calcium pills, and the multivitamin to a lesser degree, but still quease-inducing. After a few weeks I switched to calcium chews, which where much better, and I dealt with the multivitamin as best i could (i tolerated them better when i had something in my stomach, but i ate very, very little the first month, so it was challenging. Around 2 months post, when i could stand to eat again, i would bury my multivitamin in a tbsp of greek yogurt and down it. That seemed to do the trick. -
What is your target caloric weight post-op (to lose, not to maintain)
stardust82 replied to stardust82's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Thanks! I definitely took the weight loss coming so easily in the first year for granted and did not do anything further when I stalled. I now see that others constantly worked at it and adjusted to succeed and that I need to show that same level of persistence/tenacity to get to where I want to be! -
What made you decide to have a WLS?
Rebecca-RN replied to omrhsn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thanks so much for the transparency and openness of everyone sharing their struggles! I have been researching (nurse brain here, lol) bariatric procedures for over 4yrs before finally being brave enough to seek out help. I’m almost 40 and have struggled with my weight my entire life. Have lost and gained back over 60lbs three times, but never in a truly healthy way. When all my scrubs were skin tight, and I was over the weekend gut limit for a bicycle, I realized I had enough - time wanted my entire life to change! I used to love bicycling, hiking, and strength training, but have gotten so out of breath all the time which made me depressed, and then I had to have a hysterectomy and everything really changed after that! so fast forward to now, I’ve lost about 10-15lbs since March/April and am scheduled for my sleeve provider in just three days!! good luck to everyone -
What is your target caloric weight post-op (to lose, not to maintain)
stardust82 replied to stardust82's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Thanks so much for all the feedback everyone! It's super helpful. I know that I have not been making high enough caloric deficits so I am going to heed your advice and try to play this by ear/do some trial and error. I know now that my numbers were way off (too high!!) though. I think I will try to focus on 1000 calories max each day comprised of protein shakes, eggs, milk, salads with chicken, and lots of fruit this week and will see how it goes! -
Weight regain advise please
stardust82 replied to onmyway11's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
This is awesome advice, thank you! I think I do need to more dramatically cut my caloric intake for sure, as I am basically able to eat normal sized meals now. I've easily been eating 1800-2000 calories a day and not losing at 215 lbs. I think I am losing a bit now as I have been exercising a lot more now but even still, my progress has been quite slow. I am going to take your suggestion and try to do protein shakes for the next few days and see if that helps with my stall! Thank you! -
When did your program give you the OK to take vitamins?
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to raspberrylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did chewables the first 2 weeks. Started those the day I got home. At the 2 week mark, I started slowly taking regular pills and vitamins (spaced them all out through the day, with meals) and at the 4 week mark, I could take them at the start of my day, with breakfast, like normal. -

How to manage menstrual pain post surgery?
ShoppGirl replied to Aliana Wood's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well unfortunately the sciatica issue returned and my surgeon said the injections were okay so I got them this time. They didn’t do anything for the pain, really though so I won’t be using them again anyways I don’t think. Unless they decrease the time it takes to recover or something which so far doesn’t seem to be the case. I’m only on day three though, and last time it took almost three weeks to go away entirely. I have an appointment with my family dr on Wednesday though and Intend to ask about pain management. I will ask about these alternative NSAIDS. -
When did your program give you the OK to take vitamins?
catwoman7 replied to raspberrylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started taking them as soon as I got home from the hospital. The only one that bothered my stomach was my vitamin B complex capsule, but that was just temporary. A week or two later I was able to tolerate them. -

I found out I was pregnant 5 months post op and after I had done a pouch reset period. I will say that I don’t believe the pouch reset actually resets the pouch, what it actually does it take you back to basics and allows you to re-harness good eating habits and reset your primary focus back to Protein. I was trying to get past the 200lb mark when I did it and it worked. It broke the stall and kept me on a downward motion. And now I’m pregnant. Good luck! You can do it!! I want to add, during the pouch reset and such, I was consuming less than 1,000 calories and ONLY focused on hitting those Protein goals. Aim for 60-80g Protein from low calorie liquid sources (to start) and you will have what you need in the short term. Now that I am pregnant, my nutritionist wants me eating 1500-1800 calories a day. I still focus on the protein first and then the calories. -
Pregnant 5 months after VSG surgery
LilaNicole20 replied to LettyVSG's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
So happy to hear from you Letty! Tomorrow starts my second trimester. Everything is going good so far. My weight has stabilized but I’m not gaining. My nutritionist had advised me that I need to increase my calories by like 700/day. Even with the increase in calories and Protein (averaging 80g/day) I’m keeping level. Did you have sleeve or bypass? I had bypass and I’m really really hoping that heartburn doesn’t return - ever! Hopefully the next 8 weeks go by fast for you! Sounds like you’re going to have a Christmas baby!! Yay!! -
College Student - Gastric Bypass during semester?
Liroychic replied to Overt28's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can't comment on the operation, but I can comment on the morning sickness. I'm not much of a puker. I've always had a strong stomach and never had problems vomiting unless I got the illness. Morning sickness is unconcerned to federal university is still selling post utme form. I had HG during both pregnancies, with the first starting around 8 weeks (it took 7.5 months before I could eat more than snacks and 1 small meal a day) and the second at 5 weeks. That's how I found out I was pregnant. I puked so hard that I peed myself. And the medications they provided me didn't always work. -
This is literally my first post here but I couldn't pass up responding. It looks like gays are here, including me 🙂 I have a good friend in Prescot near Liverpool. We talk almost every day. I feel like an honorary Brit, lol. I'm trying to decide between Gastric Sleeve and RNY, there are pluses and minuses for both but I'm leaning towards the sleeve. Is bariatric surgery covered under the NHS? It looks like you have only about a week to go - good luck!

Vitamins required or not?
Arabesque replied to sweetsmith78's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yes, everyone is different & they have different requirements around needing vitamins or not. And our requirements do change. I would ask your doctor why too especially as your blood tests show you aren’t lacking in anything & have for a while. Though are your blood tests showing everything is okay because you take vitamins? Maybe some comparison testing is needed. I stopped taking vitamins at about 8 months with my surgeon’s approval. They were making me nauseous & I was still losing. I said you want me to stop losing than I need not to feel nauseous (it want all that bad more felt off than nauseous). My blood tests were good as well. He said ok but would keep reviewing my three monthly blood tests to ensure everything stayed stable. The only thing I take is vitamin D in winter as we realised it dropped every year then. -
I was VERY lactose intolerant and dairy has not been an issue at all! Maybe I've spoken too soon cause I'm almost 2 weeks since surgery and I will continue to monitor.
-
You're only a week out. You really should clear exercise with your surgeon. However, walking is usually a safe thing to do.

October 2022 surgery support
JustAMomATX replied to KimA-GA's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I hope everything is okay….it does get better for sure. Swallowing is tough the first two weeks. Crush everything. Pills are not tolerated well. I nearly ended up in the ER over ONE gelcap. Gas and diarrhea go with the territory but it is no fun - it’s not unusual to resort to poise pads or another heavy duty pad for poop accidents. Keep us posted. -

Vitamins & Supplements?
BigSue replied to DownsizieMe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Here's what I take: Bariatric multivitamin with 45 mg iron B12 sublingual, 1000 micrograms Biotin, 10,000 micrograms D3, 5000 IU Iron bisglycinate, 36 mg Calcium citrate, 500 mg, 3x/day I take the multivitamin, B12, biotin, and D3 together. Calcium and iron are supposed to be at least 2 hours apart, and I also take thyroid medication that is supposed to be 4 hours apart from calcium and iron, so I take the thyroid medication first thing in the morning, multi/B12/biotin/D3 4 hours later, 1st calcium 2 hours later, iron bisglycinate 2 hours later, 2nd calcium 2 hours later, 3rd calcium 2 hours later. I use an app called Medisafe to track and remind me. It was a lot at first, but I'm used to it now and I have a routine. You may need to take chewable vitamins for a short period of time after your surgery (I was told to take chewables for the first 6 weeks, but you should follow your surgeon's instructions). I think the chewables taste terrible, so I switched to a capsule after the first 6 weeks. The BariatricPal One multivitamin is the best deal I've found if you get the annual subscription (but definitely buy a smaller quantity to try before you commit to buying a year's worth). I get the one with 45 mg of iron, but your iron needs may vary. Another thing to keep in mind about iron is that the most common forms (ferrous fumarate or sulfate) cause nausea for some people, especially when taken on an empty stomach, and can also cause constipation. There's another type of iron (iron bisglycinate) that doesn't cause nausea or constipation, but that's not what most multivitamins have, so you'd have to take it separately. I had low iron even before surgery, so I actually take both. I also highly recommend the BariatricPal calcium chews because they are delicious. They taste like candy and I actually look forward to taking them. French Vanilla Caramel and Belgian Chocolate Caramel are my favorites. You can often get them on sale for 20-25% off (I actually just restocked last week when they had 25% off all BariatricPal brand products). Make sure you get calcium citrate, not calcium carbonate. Most drug store calcium supplements are calcium carbonate, which is not absorbed well by bariatric surgery patients. I buy the other ones from Amazon. B12 (NatureMade) is cherry flavored, and biotin and D3 (Natrol) are strawberry. It doesn't feel like such a chore to take all these pills when they taste good.
