Need help Weight gain
Healthy_life2 replied to Happily ever after's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I went back and read your past posts on the site. I'm sorry to hear about your brain and spine surgery in 2016. Was the Bypass in February a revision surgery? Your surgeons office ruled out medical issues, right? Did they give you any instructions on diet logging your food in an app? You posted this Posted April 19, 2016 Hi everyone, I am 3 1/2 out and I am gaining weight. I had lost 180lbs with 20 to go but now I have gained 30lbs. Over the passed 2 years I have had two major surgery that have lifted me not able to excise or eat right. I don't have a nut anymore because he retired. Can someone please tell me how I can get back on track. -
What to do about weight gain?
FluffyChix replied to Tkaleigh's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm sorry for your struggles!!! ((hugs)) Depression is a b***h!! It sets up not only emotional and behavior barriers for making healthy choices, but it also sets up a physiological cascade of stress hormones whose job it is to keep you alive! And keep you eating! So it activates all the hunger hormones and we eat and eat and eat and we eat the kinda of stuff that will give us a biochemical reward of dopamine and seratonin (feel good hormones), cuz you know...we're depressed. Right? Let's build some neurotransmitters to help! So the answer is simple and difficult at the same time. You have to dig deep down and find the will and the willpower to say, "Fork this spit! I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore! Today is the day I step out in change! I'm choosing to make a better choice!" Then you take tiny little baby steps to make the next best choice. You don't look forward and you quit looking back. And pretty soon you've racked up days and weeks and months of making the next best choice and you are back on track. Like @catwoman7 I know absolutely how easy it is to not make the best choice and to have weight quickly pile back on to my body. I'm not metabolically blessed or particularly flexible. And I'm very cautious as I finalize year 2 post op and move into year 3. Cuz I do NOT want weight loss to "just happen". There are things I do to keep my weight in balance: GOLDEN RULE: When struggling with regain or stalls or a slow down in weight loss rate-thou shalt weigh daily, measure and take a picture monthly, and plan and log everything that you shove down your piehole. Everything. Good and bad. (Oh, I'm talking about you Mr. Pringle and Mr. Lays...I'm talking about you, Ernest and Julio-the Gallo Brothers.) 1. Eat on my Forever Diet Plan given to me by my doctor and RD for as many consecutive days as humanly possible. (Lean dense protein forward, healthy al dente veggies next, a bit of healthy fat with it, and if I'm still hungry, then either more veggies or a low glycemic serving of fruit.) 2. Absolutely adhere to getting in my water (100+oz per day) with the 15/45 rule in place. And I water load as well. That's staying well-hydrated all day but 15 mins before a meal I will drink about 3/4 of my full capacity of water, then sip, sip, sip, until I'm very full with water and feel like I can't drink any more. Then I wait 15 mins and eat my next scheduled meal. After that, nothing liquid for 45mins. It works like magic to reduce the amount of hunger, reduce volume eaten at a meal, and help me feel my full signal quicker. 3. Take my supplements. 4. Limit snacking to schedule healthy mini-meals to keep blood sugar balanced. As soon as the rollercoaster of blood sugar stops, I start cutting out between meal snacks. 5. Get lots of walking in daily. 6. Have stress relieving activities scheduled (4-square breathing, meditation or prayer, group support meetings and clubs/groups you enjoy, hobbies, crafts & coloring by numbers. 7. Watch comedies and laugh. (increases endorphins=feel good hormones) 8. Hug the people you love tightly for 1-3minutes (increases oxytocin and the feel good hormones). 9. Practice self-affirmation in the mirror. Look in a mirror and stand in a super hero pose. See yourself as a hero. Smile. Believe. 10. Get good rest. I mean it. Lights out. Totes dark room. Cool. Sleep at least 6 hours or more if you can. And you get up the next day and make a 1 day PROMISE / Choice to yourself to do it again that day. (I'm building an online private club with face to face group support meetings that will begin in January if you are interested. It's not instead of BP, but rather in addition to BP for those people who need an accountability partner/group. Let me know if you are interested.) -
You should be on as clear as you can liquids and Most of us did not start protein till 10 days out. But dont freak out if the broth is not crystal clear or the jello is yellow. The term clear means thin not thick liquids not really in terms of color. So no on the Cream of mushroom Broth or Tomato Broths But a chicken broth or beef broth is fine - as for protein they do make clear liquid protein drinks Yes you can strain Egg drop but get the eggs out and then VItamix it

Sleeve revision to RNY or Bypass reason
WOLVESFAN1 replied to AchieveGoals's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my revision on 12/17/19. I too had complications of GERD from my sleeve that I had almost 13 years ago. Since surgery no GERD. I've been on a liquid diet until yesterday and I was able to start protein shakes with no problem. Prior to the surgery everything including water at times would come up. I lost over one hundred pounds with the sleeve and I did keep it off. I'm currently a bit underweight, but soon I will be able to eat healthier and hopefully live a better life. I must admit the conversion was a bit more painful, but I'm also a lot older too and my body has been traumatized a lot for the last two years. I had my surgery at the # 1 hospital in the country. I won't give the name because I don't want to put something they told me without their permission. Prior to the sleeve I had no problems with GERD. The surgeon told me they no longer do the sleeve there because they have had so many patients come to them for revisions after the sleeve due to GERD. I hope your surgery went as well as mine and you are on the road to recovery. -
Dec 23,19 gsv Hi everyone Today was my surgery vsg day!! Dr. Said surgery went really good, no issues. I did my preop liquid diet for 2 wks 12/9..and I'm doing liquid phase 1 and 2 for 10 days. Labs are good. RN told me my O2 stats got better just about 6hr ago. Guess they were low prior. Ive been up walking round the floors today too. Going home tomorrow if can hold liquids down: no vomiting and I progress ok. Stomach is very sore. No nausea and pain is a 4_5 most of the time. RN told me my O2 stats got better just about an hr ago. Guess they were low prior. Will come back and post as I progress.

Post-Op Menstruation Issues
Starflower replied to despacit0w0's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I had my surgery 11 months ago and I feel like I’ve been on my period for 10 months! 😞 AND I have an IUD and didn’t have periods prior to the surgery. My GYN said it would take time to level back out to normal. -
I know this wasn't directed at me, but I've had two skin removal surgeries (8/18 and 3/19). LBL was rough - but worth it. The recovery on my upper body procedures wasn't as bad (had some issues with the incisions on my upper body procedures, so it wasn't as smooth as it could have been - but it wasn't as painful as the LBL recovery)

Surgery Scheduled
Krimsonbutterflies replied to Love27's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First off congratulations and welcome to Bariatric Pal. This site has been a source of support and knowledge for many of us on the same journey. There's a January 2020 Surgery thread for those of us who are going to have the procedure next month. My surgery date is 01/31/20, I'm so darn nervous and happy to have this site of wise people. -
based on your photos, we look like we're roughly in the same age category. There are a number of physicians now who think their "older adult" patients (I assume they mean 50+ or 60+) should be in the 23-27 BMI range. So basically at the higher end of their BMI range to maybe 5-10 lbs overweight. Supposedly it's the healthiest range for us as it gives us a little cushion in case we get sick. My PCP freaked out when I got down below a 22 BMI. I now sit right around a 25 and she's happy as a clam. So anyway, what I'm trying to say is, you're probably at an optimal weight right now (and you look it!) - and yes, you may actually be a bit lighter if you factor in the excess skin. I think you look perfect!

What to do about weight gain?
catwoman7 replied to Tkaleigh's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I think it's pretty common to start regaining starting in about year 3 post-op. I've gained almost 20 lbs and am sick about it, although I still look OK. I'd like to lose 10 lbs of it, though. And I should add it's a real bear to get off. I never should have let myself gain it in the first place! At least I caught it before it got out of control, but still... I'm just trying to do what I was doing during year 1 and 2. Protein first, then veggies, then if I have room, a serving of fruit or "good" carbs, like whole grains. Admittedly I don't always do this, though (I do get all my protein in every day, however - and I have protein at every meal). I'm also trying to stay within my maintenance calorie range (1500-1700). I do weigh and measure things like meat and yogurt and cottage cheese, and I log everything that goes into my mouth. If I don't, I take in WAY too many calories. I think the trick is to monitor yourself closely - both your weight and your food intake - for the rest of your life. It's a pain, but it's the only way to keep it off. My weight starts heading north pretty fast if I don't stay on top of it all the time. -
Thank you...I did forget to say that my doc thinks that I likely have 5-10# of excess skin (not bad enough to justify skin removal surgery as I can hide it fairly well), so that my "actual" weight may be 133-138#. But technically my BMI of 26 has me still in the Overweight category. I need to be below 24.9 to be in the Normal weight category, which starts at 136#.

Today's highlights: Actually went Costo shopping with Mr. this morning for some last minute pot-luck parties shopping. The greeters asked if I wanted one of these motorized shopping cart-moped combos, and while I was tempted just for the fun of it, the point was to get some walking in, so I declined. It was the most exercise I got at one shot in 5 days. I was pooped...went home and took a 2 hour hap afterwards. Had my first follow up with my surgeon this afternoon, and he is pleased with the healing, etc., etc. The swelling I continue to have is normal. Suggestion: drink water, move around, it will get better. The itchiness I am experiencing is normal. Suggestion: drink water, stay cool, take Benedryl, it will get better. The dizziness I am experiencing is normal. Suggestion: drink water, move around, eat more, get up slowly, ease up on the narcotics, take the prescribed Iron, it will get better. My tight feeling va-jay-jay is normal. Suggestion: apply ice packs as needed, it will get better (He also said does not look odd to him. He says I may not be used to the way it looks because I can actually see it now. Before the TT, there was excess skin above it the hid it lower between my legs.) I am now free to shower. Any steri-stips that fall off or get loose are to be covered over with a new steri-strip until my next appt on Jan 8th. Am to continue using my arm compression garment, sports bra & abdominal binder. When the tech was changing my dressings, I started to itch really badly. It seemed to get worse as the appointment went on. By the time we were walking to the car in the parking lot, it was so bad I was almost crying. Mr. drove us to the closest pharmacy and bought me a rapid-acting liqui-gel Benedryl. Within 10 minutes I was feeling better, and in another 20 minutes the itchiness was gone. BENEDRYL PEOPLE. BENEDRYL IS YOUR FRIEND. (but it does make me quite sleepy). My long-awaited shower was a tandem one, as Mr. insisted he be there in case I pass out or something. I didn't pass out. But I did have him wash my hair. I am anxious to stand up straight as the sore back is screaming at me. And I thought I would be able to do so by the time our annual 5-xmas-parties-over-3-days party marathon kicks off tomorrow night but its looking like its not going to happen...

A Tale of Two Arm Lifts (rs & ms.sss)
ms.sss replied to ms.sss's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Wow, another Winter 2019 PS patient! We need to start a club. ❤️ RE: numbness: I can't tell yet if I have any numbness, haven't been really able touch any of my incisions yet as they are all covered up under tape and stuff.... -
For me, it depends on the day, they type of food, and/or how much time I have to eat my meal. There are days I can easily eat 2 cups of food if you give me an hour and a half to do it. There are other days when I can't/won't eat 1/2 cup of food in the same amount of time. Overall though, on a "normal"/"average" day, it takes me about 45 mins to 1 hour to eat one one of my "regular" salads, which generally consists of 75-100g of salad greens, 2-4 oz of some protein or other, and some toppings. Been doing this since about August-September this year, so at about the 10 month post-op mark, same stage as you are right now. Now, the foods that fill me up faster/longer are: shiratake noodles, pork (cooked any way but especially when grilled), sashimi. So if eat any of these during a meal my ability to eat anything else is reduced. Every day is really different. I just go with it.

Volume question. I am 10 months post RNY. I can drink a shake in 10 minutes without issue or 5 oz yogurt with a 1/4 cup of granola on top in 10 min or less the same with an egg, 1/4 or slice of cheese and cup of spinach cooked in it but it takes closer to 15. At dinner I can eat maybe 2oz if meat with maybe 1/3 cup veggies and sometimes can’t finish that. I am estimating I can eat 1/2 cup of food not much more. I’m trying to maintain and have to eat sliders and carbs to get calories so I’m not eating much fir healthy veggies. When were you able to eat more volume? I have read a cup of food at the 1 year mark. I don’t want to force it but I hate creating bad habits to get calories in.

Band to bypass
SlimChickadee replied to 3cleos's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had the band removed July 16, 2019 and had the RNY on December 10th. My wonderful, awesome surgeon would not do them on the same day. Informed my husband I had a lot of scar tissue from the previous surgeries when he performed my RNY but I do not and did not have any issues with healing afterwards. I feel wonderful! Good luck to you! -
Also remember that those who lose a lot, are more likely much heavier to start. I have a lower bmi to start and "only" lost 10 pounds I think... but 10 pounds is great too. And I am now 3 1/2 months out and already reached my docs weight goal for me and am less than 25 pounds away from MY goal weight. But again... I started with a lower BMI (36 at surgery). My experience will be different then many. Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

When do you get rid of clothes?
Deemar007 replied to Krestel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got rid of all my old clothes. I do not plan on going back. I can wear a size 4 now. However, I will not expect to stay that size. So I will keep the siz 8 to 10. I lost enough in case I gain the 20 pound average at year three. I am 26 months out. -
I had my band removed 9/11/19, gastric bypass scheduled for 1/8/20. My dr would not do them at the same time. Wanted 3 months for the stomach to heal after removal. I had the band for 11 years. Tough 3 months gained almost 30 lbs. So ready to have the surgery and br on the other side of it! Sent from my SM-G930R4 using BariatricPal mobile app

Yep. Branch's seem pretty good. 10 Carlos each. 2-3 per day seems to cure my sweet cravings

More micro-improvements today. Reaching a little higher, standing a little straighter. Getting up and down from a seated/laying position is no big deal, and apparently I'm speed walking. The Kid called me "Energizer Grandma" when she saw me high-tail it to toilet hunched over with my cane cuz I had to pee so bad after a nap. Took a narcotic pain med this morning, and I think that is the last of them for me. Gonna just stick with the Tylenol now, not just for the minor aches, but for this non-stop dizziness I'm still experiencing. Been doing laps around the kitchen every hour and that seems to help both the achiness and dizziness, but the head spinning comes back soon after I sit down (unless I lay down) and the achiness comes back if I stay too still too long. My right arm & hand is no longer swollen, but my left forearm still is, and the left hand just barely...but at least now I can see the wrinkles on my knuckles again! My va-jay-jay is also feeling so much less tight, but is still looking up at me when I look down in a seated position. I did not notice before, but my thighs are actually a little swollen. My boobs continue to be a non issue. My drains are draining very little now. One drain has collected maybe 10 mls since 9:00pm last night (about 21 hours) and the other one has collected even less in the same period. Both are coming out tomorrow, so I'm definitely looking forward to that. I was feeling this unbearable itch on my left shoulder blade under the ace bandage wrapped around my boobs and Mr. went digging under there to scratch it for me. He found what he thinks is a popped blister right underneath the velcro that was touching my skin there. He put some gel on it, covered it with a band-aid and put a piece of cotton bandage between my skin and the Ace. I'm now thinking I've got a bunch of blisters under all these bandages. Can't wait to see what the incisions look like when they change my dressings tomorrow...one more sleep!

When do you get rid of clothes?
JRT Mom replied to Krestel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ha! This is a great thread. As I have waxed and waned through the years I never got rid of clothes because I knew my loss was temporary and I eventually would be back in the big ones. Then I got a lap band 10 years ago and thought it would be permanent so I got rid of all my big clothes. After 8 years the weight crept back on and I had to buy new big clothes. Now I've had a bypass and am starting to wear the smaller ones again I saved. This time I'm gonna trust the process and as I outgrow them I'll donate them to Goodwill. My uniform scrubs I will alter because I am NOT buying new ones--I'm technically retired, so I'm too cheap to spend the money on them! -
I just had my sleeve surgery on 12-18-19. Has anyone else had experiences with pain in their left should and neck after surgery? I have a follow up appointment on 12-26, planning on mentioning it to my doctor. Kinda want to see if I am stressing for yes reason.

My Plastic Surgery Thread
sillykitty replied to sillykitty's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
You know ... I'm not really sure Out of pocket. I'm not patient enough to go through the process to see if I could get some insurance coverage. This surgery took care of the areas that bothered me the most, tummy, thighs and boobs. I am so grateful that my surgeon could handle all these in one surgery, and without a thigh lift. I originally got a quote for my lower body only because all of my other consultations were 8 hr surgeries for lower body alone (LBL, thigh lift, lipo & fat transfer). When my surgeon came back with LBL only and a 3 hour surgery I asked if I could add on boobs. The way I look at it it was ultimately a cost savings, because a stand alone BA would cost more than than adding it on to my LBL. I think long term I want a arm lift and face/neck lift. I am curious to see you, @ms.sss & @mousecat88's results. Also I want to see how I end up scaring from my LBL. The arm lift scar is the only real deterrent for me. I figure i can push the face/neck lift maybe 10 years down the road? I'm curious to see how the filler, botox & laser resurfacing works. But none of those address my neck though. I also really thought I would want butt implants ASAP. I know it's vain, but I really like the curvy aesthetic, and was bummed at the thought of a pancake butt. But my new post LBL butt is small but perky. So I'm going to roll with it for a while. and see how I feel about it. (along w my booty panties of course 😂) Cost is definitely an issue. I'm in a fortunate (financial) position of having no kids. So it is just a matter of economizing in other areas of my life. My budget is my own and I'm not accountable to anyone how I spend my money. Bigger issue for me is down time from traveling. My actual time off is minimal. But to not travel for 4-6 weeks is significant. My boss has been very supportive, but I can't imagine he will be as supportive if I do it next year and the year after, you know?
