  1. I understand the logic with this but 40-50 grams of fat seems like A LOT. This is more than My Fitness Pal has as a daily goal for me, with a 1200 calorie diet and without bypass. I only eat between 400-500 cals a day, so 360 of those being fat seems excessive?
  2. Oops. I just realized this was a question about gastric bypass. I had a Loop DS. Sorry! Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Drinking too much wine

Hi, I just found this thread - and I wonder how you are doing? Its been awhile since this post but it really resonated with me. First of all - opening yourself up on this forum takes a huge amount of strength and I give you kudos. As for me, I LOVE my chardonnay.....all my friends and family joke about that is my fav thing. (at my big birthday last year, every single gift had a chardonnay theme :-)) Everyone's drinking has their own level of what is "too much". I had a revision 5 years ago and lost 80lbs...on cloud nine, felt great and had an amazing experience. Four months after surgery, I started drinking again. I was able to "drink through" my sleeve and starting gaining the weight back year 4. Drinking for me leads to very bad food choices especially late at night. I also developed severe GERD and a hiatal hernia that were both so painful, and what felt best was comfort food. Today, I am one week out from a revision from a Sleeve to RNY. My surgeon suggested it as the only way to get rid of the GERD. If I could pass along what I have learned this past week - is that the challenge of not being able to reach for a glass of wine is real. It has shown me how much I was drinking. I won't say it is harming my daily progress to meet the protein, water and exercise needs. However, I will say it is making it more difficult mentally. Like a fly swarming around your head reminding you - "you can't drink right now!" Not a good distraction. Only you will know what is best for you - but I do wish I had stopped drinking all together at least a month or two prior to my surgery. This is a marathon not a sprint, and I am here to support you if you need it. I know exactly where you are coming from!
  4. I am one week post-0p from a revision (sleeve to RNY) due to severe GERD, hiatial hernia.....some complications surgically.....however, since waking up, I have not had ONE recurrence of anything remotely like acid reflux. I am thrilled! I do find it strange this time around that I am hungry after the surgery. Or - I have to retrain my brain about food? For a year, I've used comfort food to calm my reflux in my sleeve which led to a wait gain of 40 lbs. The liquid phase in not so much about healing as it is also realigning our relationship with food I guess!

    Post op pain

Hi! I had a lapband to bypass revision yesterday and I am home today. I feel pretty good, but the pain when it hits is terrible. Can anyone tell me how long their post op pain lasted?
  6. ok i will say for bypass the big pill organizer. the 2oz disposables for things like batch making of jello. i am almost a month post op at this point and i use them to remind myself of not eating too much because full is a different feeling now and comes on slowish. you can get the tashi ones on amazon for under 10$ for 200 i believe. Also i got some cheapy warm glad containers that are 4oz for microwaving for premaking soup (walmart 3$). a water bottle is a necessity (insulated i use klean kanteen). just carry that little 12 oz with loop cap everywhere. It fits in the car too. one bag of whatever shake mix protein your program requires and a blender bottle for choking it down in the morning. the blender bottle while it doesnt keep it cold by design i seem to sip better because u can only take small swig with it. i have a magic bullet mini it was 29$. thats what im using to blend. however u can use a handheld one. get some pb2 to flavor your choc shake as peanut butter choc so you dont get burnt out on just choc. some peoples incisions open back up two of mine did. im fair skinned and the surgeon says i have baby skin though. surgeon rec palmors oil post op so using that on belly. i did use some gauze afterwords with some tape from the drug store. You might not need it but some of us did. you need to acquire a script of simethicone from surgeon in chewable (insurance pick up tab for me that way). I recommend also bentyl in case you get abdominal cramping post surgery. You need to inquire about the gallbladder med too if you still have it. Next you need to buy your multivitamin which i use bariatric advantage ultrasolo 1x a day. Its nasty and huge but my program required it. Next buy your calcium i have bariatric advantage soft chew in caramel. one 90 item bag per month. I bought three months worth of the vitamins. It would be helpful for you to have some kind of food water tracker. i use happy planner fitness for mine. Heres just some pictures to give you ideas.
  7. @loridee11 I’ve been able to hang with the concept that it’s a lifestyle change, and overall I do well. I’ve been getting exercise most days (I set a goal for September to just get a minimum of a minute of exercise most days. In the last week I’ve been smashing that and getting 30-50 minutes a day. I honestly really enjoy dancing and found that Just Dance (video games) is a lot of fun! It gets me up and moving around and I love it! I don’t drink soda (I drink soda so sparingly it’s easier to say I don’t drink it. I’ve haven’t had a soda in over a month, and before that it was likely 3-4 months since the last one). I don’t drink alcohol. My vice is sweets (which is why Gastric Bypass will be good for me, because I won’t be able to overindulge anymore!). I did a baking swap with a neighbor recently, bread for cookies. I shouldn’t have done it. One day I ate 4 cookies, but I countered it by getting more than 40 minutes of exercise. I’m not thinking about exercise as punishment though, because I’m really enjoying the dancing! The food swaps you suggest are great, however I’m a vegetarian, so I don’t eat heavy red meats anyway (though it’s something I miss on occasion). I get my protein requirements daily so far, in that I eat a lot of eggs, beans, and nuts. I’ve stopped eating things like chips and most snack foods—but like I said, I like sweets. If I just keep them out of the house it will be ok (I’ve been able to meter myself with those cookies now!). @WishMeSmaller Thank you so much! The air is horrendous over here. I haven’t had exercise outside in a long time, and haven’t been able to go to my farmers markets to sell my jam and bread because of the air quality. It’s awful. Up until the summer heat hit and then the smoke, I was walking a mile every morning. That made it a lot easier to stay motivated! Then the heat came (110+ days for 5+ days in a row), then the smoke...I have asthma, so I haven’t been able to be outside much. I think that took the biggest blow to my depression. Going on a walk in the morning before eating anything or even drinking coffee...it was nice. It set my tone for the entire day! And here I am now. But like I said to Lori, I’ve been doing Just Dance daily, and it’s really helping get me back out of that depression! @tarotcardreader Hi there! My surgeon isn’t giving me any flack over this. I haven’t even talked to her since my initial appointment. I think it’s more of a self mental block that I’m stressing out over. My PCP said that it isn’t a major issue if I don’t lose exactly 20 pounds. I’m back down about 8 since I posted this, though. I’ve gotten a lot of my motivation back and ditched the depression! Thanks for looking out. ❤️ @BigSue Thank you for this! You’ve inspired me to try out IF again. I’ve been not eating until 10/11am, and finishing eating by 6/7pm. It’s really helping to keep me back in check. Right now I’m just adjusting to the IF and logging again, and getting a lot of movement in. And then I’ll start adjusting my calorie goal to below 2000 again (they recommended 1500 for women at my first nutrition meeting). I figured it’s kind of hard to go from 0 to 60, so I’m going to ease back into it (someone suggested it somewhere! To just cut down a little at a time, instead of the shock that tends to come from going 2500 calories to 1500 overnight. It is likely to cause binge eating!). Anyhow, thank you so much for your encouragement, it means a lot!

    Revision completed

I am 4 months and 1 day post op from my revision. I weighed in this morning at 159.8 so I appear to be holding steady. I went up to 163 then it just dropped back down. Water weight I suppose. I had a scare a few weeks ago that sent me to the ER but I left because you couldnt even get in the door !! I then went to another hospital that had a 2 1/2 hr wait !! I then went to a 3rd that didnt have an ER. I came home after that and decided I would call an ambulance if it didnt get better. I went through 4 hrs of pain and it just stopped. I chalked it up to some kind of dumping. UGH. Now my back has been out for most of the week and I have been having pretty bad pain in lower left abdomen near pelvis. Any thoughts ? I have been debating on going in but keep thinking it has something to do with my back.

    Fruit

What does your Doc's plan say? Compliance is not just a river in Egypt. Fruit and fruit juice are very high in sugar, and if I'm gonna dump on something, it's going to be fruit juice. So, if you don't listen to me about compliance, listen to me about this. I've previously said that about 50% of RNY Post-ops dump, but it's actually my Doc's odds for me. It actually depends on how much is bypassed, slight procedure differences, and personal differences, so it can be as low as 20% or as high as 50%. [I did a google]. If you dump and get constipated, as I sometimes do, I do just enough fruit juice to cause things to loosen up, which is a symptom of dumping. If you don't listen to the first two parts, don't listen to this because it's not smart to try to dump as it can always go worse than you hope. So, in summary, Plan, dumping, constipation. Go out and kill it. Tek
  10. Is there anything you might suggest I get before surgery? For example, I've seen people wearing abdominal binders, using 2 oz cups to pre- measure servings, etc. Thanks for any advice you could provide!
  11. I have been 4 years post op with my gastric bypass underwent in 2016. Since this global pandemic I have gained weight due to the ability of working from home, stress, fear and the lack of exercise. I am slowly trying to fight against the challenges now the past 2 weeks such as discipline myself again to healthy eating, protein shakes, water intake and going to the gym 3 x a week. What exercise recommendations can you shed on me which will allow me to burn fat most, lose weight and allow me to meet my goal. I am so close I can taste it. Fruit

I am 3 months out of the gastric bypass. Is it OK to add fruit and fruit juice to my diet or will the sugar cause me to dump?
  13. Hello, I’m looking for some encouraging words- I’m 4 weeks out from my gastric bypass. The two weeks prior to surgery I lost 20lbs, the week after surgery I lost another ten. But I’ve not lost any weight in 3 weeks. This experience has been really challenging as I had very bad reactions to the pain medication that put me back in the hospital. Then just recovery, it’s been rough. It’s a mind f@@@ when I’m not even loosing weight. I’m doing what’s been told to me to do and yet nothing. It feels like it was all for nothing.

    Anyone for August 2020

Hi, My Dr. Who is head of Bariatric program in CA. (L.A. area at least said he considers the vertical sleeve the Gold Standard now. I was asking about the sleeve compared to bypass. To tell you the truth I don't know much about the duodenal switch. I think it would depend on how overweight you are Vertical Sleeve was a good procedure for me however after about four years you can start getting your way back if you are a snacker if you are absolutely desperate to keep the weight off you might consider the other however all of my friends who had bypass are severely anemic they barf much more regularly than I do I never Barker ever I don't have any troubles like that you may really want to think about what the duodenal switch entails. I don't think any procedure is a magic pill, so to speak...but I do know that I see a lot of people that have had the bypass, and they just seem uncomfortable a lot more....or need to go be sick. The Vertical Sleeve is a tool but I feel perfectly fine I just get full when I'm eating too much so you do have to have a little bit of willpower at times push yourself away from the table. Good luck in making your decision.

    October Surgery Roll Call

I called my the wrong name in earlier post. I am being converted to a bypass on October 7th, 2020
  17. Today I got the great news I’m approved & set a surgery date of November 18th! I could of gotten sooner but needed family members help with my kids. That surgery date worked best for everyone. I started this process in January nervous but determined. Covid happened and delays started. But I’m thankful because it gave me time to change my mind from Sleeve to Bypass surgery. I did 6 months of nutrition classes that my insurance decided is no longer a requirement after I finished. But again I’m just super thankful for all the advice and phone calls I had with my dietician. Ready to take this last leap and embrace the healthier life I’m working so hard to get. Great day!!
  18. Not everyone loses hair as WLS, but it does happen commonly enough. That said, it's a temporary thing in almost all cases once the body adjusts to the changes brought on by the surgery. In my case, the hair was already on it's way out even before I had my first surgery, let alone my revision.
  19. Things are not always that cut and dry. For my lap band surgery 9 years ago, yes, I knew the post-op road map before surgery and what my diet plan would be. For the revision surgery I had in July, I THOUGHT I knew what my post-op road map was because I had a 2 hour long pre-surgery class where I received what my program refers to as the "Bible" - a 61 page handbook that details general instructions pre-surgery, what to expect the day of surgery, what recovery will entail, and, of course, the diet plan road map for their Phases 1 through 6. I went through that handbook cover to cover multiple times leading up to surgery. I had my surgery. I woke up. I started in on Phase 1 which was 1 ounce of water every 30 minutes. Phase 2 would start once I got home which would be 1 ounce of water every 15 minutes. Phase 3 would start after my first post-op follow-up (1 ounce of Protein shake every 15 minutes, twice a day and then 1 ounce of water every 15 minutes whenever I wasn't doing protein shakes). The morning after surgery, my doctor came to check on me and to get my discharge going. It was then that he told me to ignore what the handbook says and to not follow it. That he would be giving me instructions directly that he felt would be more successful. Did I mention that he WROTE the handbook? Because he did. So, there I went from knowing exactly what my post-op program was to being completely clueless about it because it would be parsed out to me every 1-2 weeks by my doctor instead. Based on the handbook, I should be in the tail end of Phase 5 which would be me eating soft foods. Realistically, I am still in some hybrid phase (4.5?) where the 3 meals I get a week are mostly blended/pureed with the occasional attempt to at soft food to see how I tolerate it. In two weeks time, I should, according to that handbook, be in Phase 6, which is the return to "normal" foods and being able to eat one meal a day, with protein supplements making up the rest of my intake. Except that doesn't seem likely to be what will happen because my doctor threw his own handbook out the window. So...nothing is ever set in stone, in terms of post-op diet plans.

    Anyone for September 2020?

My surgery is tomorrow. Waiting for that call to let me know what time to check-in. Conversion to a bypass from vsg and this time around I’m a lot more nervous!
  21. Good luck on your upcoming procedure. I’m getting ready to schedule mine. I’m having sleeve revision to the D Loop. Please let us know how the procedure went for you, if it was an easier recovery and how it’s working. You’ve got this!!
  22. Hello Yes, i had a revision In 2009 i underwent the lap band procedure. The weight loss was successfully but my food intake was poor. I regurgitated alot. In 2015, i developed an erosion around the stomach and they had to remove my band. They restored my stomach for a few months with meds In 2016, i underwent a revision which was a gastric bypass. I loss weight but 4 years later I am at a stAll. Sent from my SM-G960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. I had my VSG in December of 2019. I had a VSG to RNY in August 2020 because of severe GERD that was so bad I was on 3 different acid reducers and a bland diet. I didn’t have reflux issues before my VSG outside of pregnancy. However a pretty bad hiatal hernia with the GERD lead me to choose revision. Two months out, I’m glad I chose the revision because my throat isn’t constantly sore and I’m not chewing 8-12 tums a day anymore.
  24. Hi Repeating! Popping in today hello to all my Bypassers. How's everyone hangin'? I don't have a lot that's new to share. I'm in a bit of a stall having teetered with the points of the same pound for about 10 days now. 186.6 one day 186.2 the next. Back and forth. As long as I don't see the full number above I try and not give it much thought. I ate at my first restaurant in 6 months a couple weeks ago. Patio seating of course. But it was the first time I was eating outside of my home since surgery and it was scary for sure. I ordered pork-shank wings and a yogurt parfait. Ate two wings and 2 bites of the parfait. The meat was delicious but 2 of them was about 3 oz and I rarely eat that much in one sitting. Towards the end of the meal with extended family (who do not know I had surgery) I was sweating and breathing deeply and praying I would not be sick. Luckily the weather was lovely and I needed to pick up some masks from a store down the street so we strolled to it after paying the bill and I was able to walk ahead with my daughter, chew a papaya enzyme and breath and burp. I made it to our car about 25 minutes later feeling much better. And by the time we got home I was fine. This "feeling" happens often actually where I've eating protein too quickly and I feel nauseous and as if the food won't go down. But it always passes without incident. This time was the worst but I managed and I now feel much braver about eating out. I do get very hungry. Which is why I eat too quickly. I'm having about 4 very small "meals" a day, a daily coffee with fairlife and sometimes a small treat at night like 10 m&ms. And I'm ravenous for each one. I wish I was like the others who aren't hungry. Proteins are harder to digest but there really isn't anything I can't eat. And I've tried everything except rice, real bread and pasta. When I eat a sweet my stomach bubbles a lot. But then settles. My hot flashes continue even with the new vitamin with Black Cohosh. I figure it's just a forever thing since I've been dealing with them for a couple years now. But they are worse since surgery. The steady routine Covid provides allows me a great deal of consistency over my food schedule. So this is the time to be successful. IIt will only get harder when "real life" returns like work and travel and more outings. I've added push ups to my daily walking work out. I get in about 5 miles in a day. Nothing spectacular cardio-wise but it's steady movement. Feeling pretty good. 31.5 pounds down. Hoping for 1.5 more before Oct 9th which will be my 4 month post date and my "halfway to goal mark". That's about it. I'd love to hear how everyone else is doing in their day-to-day. Onward Bypassers!
  25. Update: I got my date for the DS revision, coming up in 2 weeks. I have only 1 week of pre diet this time around. Anyone else?
