Post-op checkup went well. I walked in and they weight me right away... from 281 day of surgery to 271 today (Dec3 - Dec11). So it looks like I lost some weight.... So they also measured everywhere and asked a bunch of question and told me I dont need my bandage anymore. So the Nurse told me that I can gradually move on towards the mushy stage for about 3week. Doctor told me that I'm doing ok and look like my first fill will be in 6weeks . So they told me to come back in 6 weeks and also do some blood works before appointment day. I knew my first fill wont be for like 4 weeks but.... 6 week? I hope I dont gain anything and keep loosing weight. I think once my wounds heal more then I can start walking extra and xmas coming up... which means vaction time, I should hit the gym with all that extra time.

Kristin, not drinking a little something with a meal kinda scares me. How long did it take for you to get used to not drinking with meals? I get banded next week.

First fill..What do you guys think about the amount?
bama_belle replied to Apples2's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I think mine is a 10cc. I don't know how much was put in during the surgery, but on Tuesday I had 2cc put in. According to my Dr., I've done so well on the weight loss that he didn't really think I needed a fill, but did a small one so I would continue to lose and not get discouraged. I'm on liquids/softies for the rest of the week and then back to solids. Yesterday I was starving, strangely, but today, not so much. My question is, do you guys exercise on the days you're on liquids/softies, after a fill? -
I have not been filled yet and I'm concerned about how much i am eating
NYdad replied to NYdad's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thank you for your posts, I have accepted that I'm on my own until I start getting fills. I called the doc and he also assured me what I am feeling is normal. This is pretty tough at the moment. I guess I didn't realize that when I was going to start solids again I would feel this way. I am hoping once I start the filling process I can start losing again. my doc made it a point that I stay on the south beach and minimal exercising until 4 weeks. well almost at 4 weeks so I get to hit the treadmill again. I've been walking but not very hard. I havent gained weight but I also havent lost. hopefully I will start shedding pounds again once a turn up the work outs. I cant wait to get this process moving again. thanks again! -
At my 6 week follow-up (oct 24) I think I will need my first fill. I am watching it but feel hungry between meals and feel like I can eat more than I should. I think these are signs of a needed fill. Do you agree?

Question after question now I suspect!!
maryb replied to oreilly76's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I too had headaches a lot before being banded. Alway had them if I didn't eat for several hours. I have not had a headache since being banded. I realized two days ago when my husband said he had a headache that I haven't had a headache or taken Tylenol in over 7 weeks. I think I can count this as a medication reduction on my score card. -
Are you glad you chose the band vs. r-n-y?
miminms replied to miminms's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Wabb...ditto! And look at your success!!! You are almost there. Congrats!! juno610...You gave all my reasons for chosing the band! We don't know the future and anything permanent scared me. I also love knowing that if I start gaining or reach a plato I have the option of getting a new fill and that should help me to get back on track. With the RNY what can you do?? momlambert....Thank you! Same to you! I know it is so frustrating when you don't lose as fast as others. You have to count your successes though....how would you be doing without your band? I know every day-week-month-year I was killing myself. Now I have hope and a future! You hang in there and don't give up-21 lbs is a lot! Good luck and God bless! -
Hi ladies, I was banded 3 and a half weeks ago. I have a Mirena IUD and had had very light, very minor periods until my surgery. I'm having a really heavy period now and was wondering if that's in any way related to the surgery, anesthesia, drugs....? Did anyone else go through this? thanks sara

Is it normal for eating to get harder instead of easier?
marieee posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I haven't had my band filled in months. My surgery was 9 months ago. Usually eating has gotten easier instead of harder, which is of course why we need fills. I don't need my band filled, and eating has all of the sudden got harder for a few weeks. At first I though it was PMS because of what I have read some people say about PMS making your band tighter, but that has passed and it's been too long for it to be caused by PMS. I think I may be eating too little, but I am making sure I get nutrients. I am not under stress, and nothing unusual has happened like stress. Should I go see my surgeon? I'm thinking I may need to because it is getting hard to eat soft food. Could this mean my band has slipped? I will go read up on that now. I hope not! Thanks! -
Well i finally met with the surgeon today and luckily I've had all my testing with the exception of blood, chest xray and NUT consult. So in a perfect world I would be planning my surgery date....BUT.....due to a few meds I take daily( for anxiety and depression) I may be held up another three months. It seems that since I can't swallow pills post surgery I will have to crush my meds. If my meds can't be crushed then I have to try alternative meds that can be crushed. However, I would have to stay on these "new" crushable meds for 3 months to make sure they work before the surgeon will give me the green light. Anyone have this issue?

How long did it take you to loose your first thirty or fifty pounds?
Acadia replied to carvey's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think that's a point a lot of people forget. The way I found it to be was if you want rapid weight loss go with gastric bypass (you will lose more initially than gastric banding), but if you want long term and body adaptable weight loss go with gastric band (where you choose if it works for you or not, and yes I know that could incite a flame war). One to two lbs a week is a calorie deficiency of 3,700-7,400. If you were eating 2,200 calories a day prior to surgery then reduced yourself to 1,500 calories a day that's a loss of 5.28 lbs/month. So those people who are losing 20 lbs/month are both drastically limiting their calories and working out to expend more calories. Unless you do the same, don't expect those results. -
How long did it take you to loose your first thirty or fifty pounds?
stateofzen replied to carvey's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost almost 30 lbs pre-surgery (I put myself on a strict Atkins-like low carb presurgical diet for a month and a half). I have lost 50 since surgery, which was 4 months ago, so that's a total of 80+ lost. No one really noticed I was losing weight until I was down 60 from my high, but I noticed as soon as my clothes started fitting differently at about 20 down. Keep in mind that I am a "lucky" one and I know a lot of people who had surgery the same time I did, who have had more fills, and have not lost anywhere close to what I have. One of the biggest depressing downers is when you compare your weight loss to the one or two people who do phenomenal, assume that is the norm, and then are completed crushed that you're not losing at the same rate. Resist doing that-- as long as you are following doctor's orders, the chances that you will lose weight eventually are very very good. 1-2 lbs a week is healthy and normal, but I've seen lots of people who are losing 1 lb week upset because they are losing slow-- they aren't, they are losing at the expected rate (that's 4-5 lbs a month). It's the super-losers who are doing something strange and unusual but because we all want to be the super fast losers, we set them up in our minds as the norm when they are not at all. -

I first noticed I'd lost weight because my face looked thinner within a couple of weeks after surgery, and my double chin is gone. But the kicker came when I was dressing for my first workday back, after three weeks off to recover from surgery. I fastened my pants and they about fell to the floor. I put on my favorite belt, only to discover I needed to punch a new hole in it, inches smaller than the previous hole. I went clothes shopping, and bought shirts all a size smaller than the size I wore previously (2XL instead of 3XL), and now i'm finding some of those may be a tad too big. If I'm actually nearly down to just an XL shirt size, that'll be smaller than I've been in about ten years. OMFG! Dave -
Thank you for visiting this blog. Many of you will be able to relate to my story. Just a few months ago I was in a very low dark place when a friend sent me a text. It was a link to a contest for a free lap band surgery. In my negative mind set I thought "yeah right! Like that would ever happen!" Well, three months later I received a phone call from the surgerons office telling me I was a finalist!! I couldn't believe it! There is light at the end of the tunnel! So here is my plea....The contest winners are determined by voting. The two with the hightest amount of votes wins. Please vote for me Christina L. UpDate: 4/17/2012 I believe it was the American Author Greg Anderson that said "Focus on the journey, not the destination.." By now most of you are aware I did not win the contest. It's true, one week ago today I received the phone call from the contest rep that began with "Unfortunately....." It was not the call I had expected. As you can imagine this has been a long emotional roller coaster ride. Though this adventure in my life's journey has come to an end I will reflect on the lessons learned and tell the funny stories for many days to come. Like when my mother and I tried to use one of the computer labs at my sisters college. Apparently it was very obvious we were NOT students and it was our FIRST time using that Mac computer. A chipper young student named Tuesday busted us but kindly help us "old folks" figure it out rather than reporting us to the "Lab Watchdogs". (yes it was a Tuesday and yes her name really was Tuesday) Most importantly though, I want to sincerely thank each of you for all your encouragement and support. Thank you all so much!

Went to row class today. Endurance row. Wow I gave it my all. It was tough. Row 500 meters each within 3 minutes twice. If you row too slow you won't rest in between so you have to sprint. Then row 1000 meters 2 x each within 6 minutes at a strong steady pace then row another 500 meters 2x at a sprint each within 3 minutes at a sprint. Even the super fit people were panting. But it felt awesome to finish especially because I really wanted to quit halfway. lol. Didn't think I could do it Yay 1 more workout tomorrow and I will have met this week's goal of blogging daily and working out 4x this week. I wonder what I will do for my goal next week. Ideas welcome. :-)

Day 46 or Six Weeks 4 Days Since Banding
4MyHealth2011 commented on 4MyHealth2011's blog entry in 4MyHealth2011's Blog
I don't have anyone. I even live alone. I did see my Nurse Practitioner about two weeks post-op. She checked out my wounds and gave me a B-12 shot. The pain was not too bad as long as I was on the Liquid Codeine and that was for a good 4 weeks. But at week 3 I would hold off taking it till bed time. -
Follow up with doctor about an unfill
WASaBubbleButt replied to Cleo's Mom's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Why don't you try this, instead of 3 meals daily, for a week or so what if you eat three bites every hour? Small bites and THREE ONLY. If you can't help yourself and you eat more than three then you have one answer, you are overeating. If you can't stop at three bites that might be your problem. How is your dental work? Do you need any work done? Could you not be chewing well enough? I'd try the three bites an hour for a few days and see if your reflux and pain go away. You might be one that has to eat several smaller meals vs. 3 meals daily. -
So about how long was everyone out of work post-op? (please help)
buzzby315 replied to StephOnee's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I agree with the others. A good week to do things at a slower pace, get adjusted to a new "eating" schedule, and being able to rest when you feel tired. My surgery was on a Tuesday morning and I went back to work the following Tuesday morning. I have a desk job. -
Hi all! I was banded 10/21/09 in Kansas. It has been a pretty easy process so far aside from the awful gas pains I had that first week. I'm excited about getting healthy and thin (well maybe not thin, but at least out of the obese categories). I turn 30 tomorrow, yikes! I'll treat myself by going to the gym :wink2: What else? Hummm... I started down this road in August when I made the very difficult decision to have weight loss surgery. It snowballed from there. I went to a meeting at my surgeon's office. A few weeks later I met with the surgeon. My insurance approval came a few weeks after that! Yeah, surprised me too. I got in my visits with the psychologist. Then it was time for the longest two weeks of my life doing the pre-op diet. It was tough but I did loose 20 pounds! Surgery day came and went without any problems. Now I'm just waiting for December 3rd when I should get my first fill. I guess I am in bandster hell right now. I try to only eat 1 or 1.5 cups at each meal but I get hungry about an hour or two before it's time to eat again. I'm getting through it though, just gotta bide my time until I get fills and get some restriction going on. Good luck to everyone here, I'll be hanging out from time to time!
-
Carol, how big are your fills? I ask because it has bee nsaid that many of the U.S. doctors like to creep up on restriction and only give .25 to .50 of a cc for each fill, where as Mx doctors like you to achieve restriction as soon as possible. Everyone is different. You may find out that as little as .2ccs can make a huge difference. I know for me sometimes my fills took 1-2 weeks to kick in. Other times I would get greater restriction months later after getting a fill. Hang in there it can be a bit frustrating but it will happen.

I know you're scared - I was scared too. I was fine up until I had to walk "behind the door" from the waiting room into the surgery area and at that point I burst into tears and had to bawl in the bathroom for about 15 minutes. After that I was fine. You are doing the right thing. You won't be thinking that for about a week after surgery, but that goes away. I am so thankful I had this surgery, and I have such a positive outlook on life now. I get compliments just about every day, and I still have a long, long way to go. As someone else said, if you weren't scared of surgery, something would be wrong with you. It's like being scared to stand in front of a group of people and speak - everyone gets scared, nervous, anxious. But that is the great thing about being alive - you get through situations with courage and strength and you become a better person for it. Good luck and come see us when you're on the other side - we will be here for you!

I agree the numbing isn't necessary if the port is easy to get to in one or two pokes. Unfortunately, mine was quite deep and the long needle was needed, and the poking around was painful. I couldn't take it after a while and had to ask the dr. to numb it. I'm now nervous about going back next week for more fill.
-
Congratulations and welcome! I know how you feel about exercise. I have a tough time fitting it into my schedule but the semester ends next week (I'm a community college professor) so I should be able to spend some time getting a routine going before the next semester begins January 14. Now, your weight loss sounds great, but since I teach math, can I ask how 12 plus 12 = 30?

We all have that worry when we start looking into this surgery. For me, I had tried so many times, only to fail. I didn't want to fail again .. not for me, not for my family ... I just wanted something to work. I thought about all the money I'd sunk into other "programs". After a few weeks or months I had always given up. What would make this any different? Well, this time it is different. I don't know why, but I'm 9 months post op and I haven't given up on my band. It hasn't given up on me. I've had my ups and downs and plateaus and I'm sure I'll have more. Its not the easy way out - I've had to work for this! But the band is a tool that makes it possible. It can work, if you work with it. Btw, I was a banana bread addict lol - making 2 loaves a week and the hubby and I would eat those in one sitting, with a tub of margarine sitting between us. I haven't touched it since the surgery. Good luck in your decision.

Dr Deol's patients: pre-op diet question
CoachBuckley replied to juno610's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi Juno I just had the band done with Dr. Deol on July 31. I was a bad case tho because my BMI was over 70 and Beaumont will not operate on a person over 500lbs. I was on the Garden Light (which is like Optifast) at the Unisource Comprehensive Weight Loss center for about 5 months. I lost 85lbs pre op so I could have the surgery done. She normally has her patients as it says in the handbook I have go on the Optifast for 6 weeks prior to surgery. Keep in mind the optifast is to prepare you for the liquids after surgery (which can suck) The program she has works if you follow it. If you are worried about feeling hungry don't be. The first 4-5 days are the worst while your body detoxes (lol) but after that you do not feel hungry. Your stomach is contantly full, you just have to tell your brain that!! If you have any more questions I will try to answer them for you!!
