    BMI 35 and MGB

Well, now it’s almost 3 months gone and I’ve lost 13 kg ( only) . Weird is that I get hungry over 2 hours and probably it takes down weight loss. I still don’t have problems with dumping or loosing hair which is good.

    Over 50 sleevers

Hi, I’m 7 months post-op. I was 55 when I had my WLS (sleeve.) I’ve lost a total of 60+ pounds. I’m a slow loser but I’m ok with it. I workout to minimize loose skin, so I am building muscles.

    Over 50 sleevers

I’m 52. Sleeved13 months ago. Lost 50 presurgery and have lost 128 since surgery last May. I’m losing slower now than I was in first six months but I still avg 8 lbs a month, sometimes a bit more. I had one major stall from month 7-9 then the pounds started coming off again. I want to lose about 44 more. My doctor feels another 25 is very doable even at my age and 44 isn’t out of the question. She did say after month six, especially for older patients, walking, cardio and resistance training are the difference between plateauing and continuing to lose. I strive for at least 12k steps daily and I have added in the gym five days a week to keep losing. I don’t think age will stop your progress but younger people probably rebound from loose skin better than older people. Wishing you the best of luck. The sleeve changed my life.

    Drinking after bypass

Here's a weird one. I often heard after getting WLS, that alcohol can be this really slippery slope and transfer addiction is real. It's funny because I was simultaneously worried and not worried at the same time because alcoholism runs in my family and I've seen it ugly, up close and personal which has made me incredibly reflective on my alcohol use, always checking it and monitoring to make sure it wasn't something I was doing out of habit and only in moderation. Basically, I've never been really into alcohol but don't get me wrong, I had my party days in college and I remember being able to drink soooooo much for a long time when I was partying with friends. Fast forward to today, I'm a year and like 5 months post op from bypass and I've found a couple things with alcohol and want to know if anyone is having the same experience: Getting drunk now is horrible, a surefire way straight to my head in the toilet, and not because I'm too drunk but because alcohol makes me incredibly nauseous if I have more than 2 drinks. I also don't drink sugary drinks either - I do usually a hard liquor like vodka and soda water. I find now though that I don't even feel drunk like I used to. I'm incredibly cognizant of everything, don't feel "silly" or "loose" like I used to, then I just get sleepy, and then I just hit a wall and get really nauseous and want to puke. If I have a drink then I eat later, like I've been in a situation where I am going to a dinner, have a cocktail like a couple hours before my meal, then I eat and the food makes me so nauseous and almost dumping. It could be that I'm just older now and drinking is different but I barely drink now since getting my bypass because it just makes me feel like crap. I don't miss it, I think drinking is really bad but I will admit it has taken a toll on my social life (but ultimately it's good to know who wants to actually be friends and who just wants a drinking buddy) But I've always heard that drinking can be a problem after, but now that I have had WLS, drinking is not fun like it used to be and I just don't want to do it at all. Anyone else experiences this? I think it's an interesting topic.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

I feel old at 55 doing this. I went straight for the DS surgery because I want results and don’t want to go back for more weight loss surgeries (skin removal is a possibility). I definitely don’t want to do that again. I had complications after my surgery on the 14th. I was in the hospital an extra 3 days. I didn’t want to post and scare anyone but I’m a week out from surgery now and doing much better. I just need to figure out my eating/drinking schedule since they can’t be done within 30 minutes of each other. I am super excited for the results. From max weight before the pre-surgery diet to now, I’m down 25 pounds!!!
  6. Itching, rashes, etc. aren’t very common. Nothing to do with having a c section or not. Unless you’ve had surgery recently you may not know if you are allergic to the adhesives, anti bacterial washes, etc. they use now. If your skin tends to be more sensitive you may be more susceptible. Glad you found out what caused yours @Dknapp. As you’re susceptible to these types of infections, I wonder if the stress of the surgery on your body set it off. It’s funny how our body reacts to certain things. Every year I get a single red spot about the size of a finger nail on my upper chest (usually in about they same place). It’s not dry or itchy just looks like it should be. It lasts about a month or so & then vanishes until it reappears the next year. Weird alright.

    Stalls suck

Only 15 pounds since my surgery date. The other 49 I lost in my pre op phase which started the beginning of the year. My dr requires you to loose weight. My goal was 21 but I really pushed myself to reach 49.
  8. I will add a little math to the equation here: You lost a bunch of weight pre-diet, of which, a very large portion of was water weight. Once you get past that, it can be broken down into a simple calories in - calories out (this is too simplified, but it will get the job done). I went to a website (https://www.garnethealth.org/news/basal-metabolic-rate-calculator) and made some random assumption as your gender/age/etc, and got a resting metabolic rate of just over 3100. Add on another 900 for activities during the day and you are at a nice round 4000 calories burned each day. If your intake is around 600 calories in, then you are at a 3400 calorie deficiency. A pound of fat is roughly 3600 calories, so everyday you should be losing 3400/3600 ~ .95 pounds. So just under a pound a day. That being said, water and other factors can make this fluctuate day to day. Also, all of these numbers are averages and vary from person to person. So if you are noticing less, then maybe your BMR is a little lower than 3100. I was at 307.6 the day of my surgery, and 285.1 3 weeks out or 22.5 pounds down. Since then, I have been consistenly loosing about .6 pounds per day. Not every day, but on average. Stick with the diet your doctor/nutritionist gave you and give it some time. It takes 12-18 months for all of that weight to come off.

    July 2023 buddies

Hi all! My VSG is scheduled for July 20th. I can’t believe it is already less than a month away! I am excited and nervous. I’m a planner and in healthcare. So, when I started considering the surgery, I watched a ton of vlogs and read a lot of research articles. 😂 My good friend had the VSG a few years ago and answered all my questions. I’ve been more aware of what/when/how I’m eating and have lost weight since officially starting the process in March. I almost completely eliminated alcohol and caffeinate in March so it wouldn’t be too much all at one time. I think that has had the biggest impact on how I feel. Not that I’m an alcoholic, but I’m definitely a caffeinaholic! I sleep so much better because the changes I’ve made have reduced my GERD. I am excited for the changes to come! I find my clothes are loose and I have more energy too! I have 2 friends, my husband, my kids, my mom, and my sister as my support system. My job just knows I’m having surgery. They don’t know the details. I start my liquid diet on July 10 while I’m on vacation! I could have made it later, but I’m just ready to start my new life ASAP!
  10. I managed to go to a conference all of last week and still have energy to hit the Disney parks in the evenings. I had 20k+ steps every day. I wasn't afraid of not fitting in rides (even the kiddie ones), I didn't feel like people were looking at me and judging me, and I managed to loose a few pounds even with the crappy food provided (kids menu were just fast food and at sit down restaurant massive 4oz of steak, 20 baby potatoes and half a head of broccoli)

    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

I feel it helps to view this as a way of life and see how far along you have come. Some days I get obsessed with the scale, or if I'm following the plan to a T, or if my pants fit etc but I go back to my why, and feel like I'm learning what to do to keep going and keeping it off. I'm also working on not rewarding myself for loosing the weight or following the plan, but grasp an understanding that this is my new life (idk if it makes sense lol) and my new normal.

awesome less than a month away! i think the closer i get to my date the more exciting it is for me to get rid of anything that’s even remotely loose or loose fitting. i just threw it all in a bag to donate without looking back and anything new with tags i’m going to try and sell and use that money to buy new stuff.
  13. no, i don't think it would look silly! esp since your arms are probably the most exposed in regular clothes...esp in the summer. everything else could be covered up without looking "out of season". i LoVe my arm lift, despite my hideous scar (i scar terribly, but i knew that going in), which can really only be seen when i lift my arms in the air, swaying-like-i-just-don't-care....it was the reason that i actually for the first time in probably 20 yrs that i felt UN-self-conscious about my arms (scar and all). i basically live in tank tops now. i even sport them regularly in the winter 😂 On the flip side, i have read many accounts of people being perfectly happy with thier loose-er arm skin, cuz it beats being obese any day. Good Luck! ❤️
  14. This is a good thread because I am facing this dilemma as well. All winter this skin did not bother me at all because it was well wrapped up. Now its summer and I am having to keep my arms covered. Will I have this painful surgery ? I really don't know. All the time I ponder it the cost is sure to increase. And can you just get arms done and nothing else ? Would it look silly ?

    OOTD

OOTD, hair edition. Fist, sorry for monopolizing this thread lately. I/we are bored, outside and having some fun! On the weekend me and the Kid got hair extensions for funsies. We both think they are waaaay too long and the Kid has already had hers shortened. My shortening appt is on Thurs, but after this afternoon i am stating to like the ridiculous length. I realized i really like it when im basically topless. the contrast between the hair colour and my skin is quite pleasing to me! (and Mr. lolololzzzz) so i may just keep it this length if i can manage to go about my day without it getting caught somewhere at least 50% of the time. which is NOT easy. i will say all this hair makes me feel super bad ass and sexy. so if any y'all want a quick pick-me-up in the confidence department, i would suggest some hair extensions to do the trick. P.s. my actual, real hair stops just above the neckline of my bra...which btw, is my old breast-lift recovery bra (it's laundry day! 😂)

  17. another possibility: you may be able to get the panniculectomy portion of the tummy tuck covered by insurance. Basically its the part of the TT procedure that removes an excessively hanging pannus. Usually u have to prove that its causing issues (like rashes, mobility impediment, etc). If covered, you could just have to pay the difference to get a full-on TT (which includes muscle tightening and and liposuction, to remove excess skin, fat and tissue in the area above the pannus) I had mine covered. I only had to pay about 30-35% of the total "retail" cost for my TT, insurance covered the rest. Mind u im up in Canada so its a little easier to get approved (as well as being cheaper overall) May be worth having a chat with your doctor and see if you qualify. Good Luck! ❤️
  18. I absolutely feel you. If I had the financial means, I'd get my loose skin removed. I do not feel confident out of clothes, and have absolutely developed a whole different body insecurity. So I know how you feel! Because plastics are out of my reach, I just have to keep my sense of humour about it, and know that I'd still much rather be skinny with loose skin than morbidly obese again. Also, and I think it's important to remember this: you can't become morbidly obese and expect no scars. We've come from one extreme to another and while it would be lovely to achieve our "dream body", the truth is you don't get things for free. There's a price, even if that price is the scars of loose skin. But it's a price I ultimately am happy to pay. Have to look on the bright side, and every time I try on a new item of clothing and look fabulous, or run without breaking a sweat, or catch my reflection and *still* marvel that it's really me (this one doesn't get old!) - I know I actually got a bargain.
  19. I got a plastics consult today, and the doctor showed me how much loose skin I have. It really hit me hard. I knew I had loose skin, but I didn't realize how much. I thought there was maybe some residual fat, but he showed me how it's all loose skin. The problem is, plastic surgery is expensive (especially here in Southern California). I could do it, but it would be a financial burden, for sure. Or, I would have to travel for surgery to a cheaper part of the country (or Mexico), which worries me. This journey has been so positive for me, and I hate that this insecurity has entered the picture. Any insight or words of wisdom?
  20. So I'm concerned, I'm 10 months post op, the first 5 and a half months I lost 70 pounds which is great but I have been the same weight for almost 5 months and I don't know if it's normal, I'm still supposed to lose another 20 pounds but I don't know if my surgery failed or what? My surgeon hasn't checked up on me since 3 months after the surgery. I've been on my own since then so I don't know, did I hit my limit? Am I not going to lose anymore weight? I've been consuming around 800 calories more or less every day now, but I'm considering to drop it to 400 to keep losing weight. Idk what to do I'm desperate, I supposedly have until August to reach my goal weight (the one set by the doctor) also I'm planning on getting tummy tuck and excess skin removal surgery and breast reduction on December but I need to reach my goal weight. What could I do, what do you recommend. Please help.
  21. Structures aren’t that common & not everyone has plastic surgery. I didn’t have a stricture & neither did my three friends (one also in her 50s, one in her 40s & one in her 20s) who had surgery. Only one of us has had plastic surgery - the younger one. She lost more weight than the rest of us. She had it because it was affecting the activity she wanted to do & she was having to buy larger size clothes simply because of the excess skin. They will do cardiac testing before your surgery but make sure you tell your team about your breathing difficulties especially after anaesthetic & maybe ask for some respiratory testing to be done as well.
  22. The post-op acne had started. My skin is fickle to begin with, and I've worked so hard with my dermatologist to clear up my hormonal acne and now.... [emoji24] Please tell me it gets better.
  23. yes - supplements for life. But they become old hat after a while. I honestly don't really think about it at all anymore. I take a small handful when I get up in the morning, and another small handful in the late afternoon. Then iron & vitamin C before I go to bed. no surgery required to fix strictures. They do it via upper endoscopy. They give you "twilight" anesthesia - which is different from general anesthesia. You're awake but unaware and you don't remember anything once you snap out of it. Easy peasy. yes plastic surgery is a pain and it's costly (two (of the three) of my plastic surgeries were much more difficult than my RNY), but I think only a small percentage of people actually have plastic surgery. No one could tell I had excess skin except, obviously, me, my husband, and my doctor, but I eventually had it taken off regardless. But when it was there, it was very easy to hide in clothes. I think microbiome changes and faecal transplanting aren't commonly done at this point - but maybe in the future. They do seem promising. here's a photo of me BEFORE I had my excessive skin removed. See any of it? I can assure you after a 235 lb loss, I had a ton of it...but as you can see, my clothes hide it.

    Tummy tuck garment - size?

Its been almost 4 weeks so I thought I'd share a pic. Healing really well and mostly happy. A couple spots we may need to do a little fixing on (but in office v. under) just to get everything to lay smooth but so glad to see how much skin is now gone. I'm not sure if I have any swelling left or not (no muscle tightening).
  25. Thanks for your replies, very helpful, much appreciated! Here are my main concerns with surgery, just trying to achieve risk/benefit balance: 1) anesthesia - recently had minor dental surgery with local anesthesia (tooth extraction), for 3 days afterwards had more frequent than usual shortness of breath and chest tightness. Bariatric anesthesia will be much heavier - it would be good to hear from someone 60+ with pre-surgery cardio vascular issues 2) my friend post-surgery has to take loads of supplements and vitamins as necessary nutrients not absorbed properly after surgery causing fatigue. Also other surgeries might be needed - to fix stricture, excessive skin etc. It seems like a lot of risk taking into account my heart issues. Are supplements for life? Would prefer natural nutrients as any chemical/medication has side effects Another question - would appreciate views/experiences on non surgical ways. Tried diets - lost weight and gained back. Heard about microbiom changes, faecal transplanting - any experience of those? Thanks again
