Help I cheated on preop diet.
Arabesque replied to Edee Formell's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
Different surgeons want you to follow different diets. Some all shakes, some advocate two shakes plus 1 reduced calorie meal, while others will want you on other diets. Mine had me on keto but put my friend on all liquids. Her BMI was a lot higher than mine & I wonder if that might influence the plan they want you to follow. First week of the all shake diet is often called hell week. Your body struggles to get used to fewer calories, your head plays tricks making your cravings worse and you suffer withdrawals from sugar, carbs & caffeine. It will pass. -

Regular lasagna for the fam (left) and a zucchini noodle lasagna for me (right). Also some Keto Crispy Buffalo Cauliflower Bites (used almond meal for the breading, but I did use some honey for the sauce...) Didn’t actually have have any of anything on the table cuz I stuffed myself with all the tasting while I was cooking, lol. Im estimating I probably took in about 300-350 calories doing this 😂 -
I'm 5 weeks pre-op and get a lot of negative and insensitive feedback with this as well. I've been identical with you in being a life-long veggie gag reflex sufferer. I do fine on the diet from keto and my nutritionist and have no problem with no getting bored with the same things. With the veggie issues, my nut concentrated on slowly introducing veggies into my diet. I found a solution by drinking an 11 oz v-8 healthy greens drink daily. I also have added a half cup of broccoli and a leaf or so of lettuce. I've tried other things a bit at a time and will still keep trying to get things down. My nut ok'd the v8 healthy greens and seems ok with my efforts. She only worried about the fiber, which I've found plenty of with the zero carb bread from aldi, chia seeds and metamucil. Your nut will target this issue with you and a newer way to see food. I've lost 36 lbs since starting the program in Feb and still losing. My liver fast diet is in a few weeks but I already take protein drinks (also giving me fiber) and ready for that. I really, really understand but you can do this. Texture is an issue for me too but I find smoothies and drinks with veggies and limited fruits go down well. Oh, also avacado is my side friend for now too.

I gave these a try tonight and they were actually pretty good. Its sliced mozzarella baked til its golden, then you roll whatever you want in it. I used shredded chicken, and some seasoned black beans and corn. I was only able to finish like 2 if them lol, but that's because it's been really hot and I haven't eaten much. Hey nice article , i am an exercise physiologist, You see weight loss is a hard phase but i believe when you pass that phase you will become someone mentally , socially and most especially physically. extraordinary But as hard as it is there are basics to it which are diet, weight loss supplements , exercise , consistency and determination , these are all the factors you need for extreme weight loss. For people always asking me i only recommend three weight loss supplements, why ? because this products i have tested it myself during my weight loss journey and the only thing i can tell you is that they help when you tremendously especially when you combine them with a diet or workout , for me my diet was a customized keto diet which i got on www.customdiet.com , very wonderful site , i customized my keto diet to my taste and i bought the package, as for supplements i used RESURGE , Lepto connect and Nutra vesta , why did i use this three you may ask, well like i said i am an exercise physiologist and i was fat , i had to test all these supplements before i prescribed it to people who want to lose weight fast so there will be no complains ,so what i am going to do is that i will drop the websites for these three miracle workers here , get any you want but i recommend RESURGE because it makes you get a nice sleep as it increases metabolic process , so www.resurge.com , www.leptoconnect.com And www.nutravestaglobal.com less i forget it is good to take herbal products because they are all vegis which means filled with absolute nutrient you can get them on www.lostbook.com , good luck guys , remember to drink lots of water too . au revoir

I hope it goes well for you. You will most likely loose a good deal of weight initially. However, my long term keto friends still struggle with weight maintenance over time, Sustainability and nutritional balance can be issues. I know I would never be able to handle the high fat load of a keto plan. I have been on a whole food plant based plan (WFPB) for about 6 months now and doing great, feeling great. Weight is well controlled and I am NEVER hungry. I eat 8-10 servings of nutritionally dense veggies/fruit every day, along with at least 3 servings of legumes/tofu/tempeh, 2 servings of whole grains, and a wide variety of nuts and seeds. I get at least 60 grams of protein daily, All my labs are great. My cholesterol dropped from 235 to 152 and LDL is actually BELOW normal range! Even 100+ pound weight loss did nothing for my cholesterol and high LDL. Interestingly, when looking at populations with the greatest longevity and members over 100 years old, all of them are plant based with very little animal protein. Hmmmmmm. The highest rates of osteoporosis and hip fracture are in populations that consume the most meat and dairy products. Hmmmmmm. Food for thought. Bottom line for me is that WFPB is healthy, sustainable, and affordable. I do triathlons, distance biking and hiking (aiming for a one day, rim-to-rim Grand Canyon hike and a 100 mile bike race next year), and I feel great with loads of energy! WFPB allows one to enjoy plenty of healthy carbs that are incredibly satisfying and which provide a lot of energy. I never feel deprived.

Hi Julie! I'm still around too...I am 6 yrs post VSG. Wow, how the time has passed. Initially I had the typical loss of the 'surgery doing the work' and felt great. Followed the rules to a T. But about 18 months post op I made major changes in my life, left a long-time career, moved, went to grad school, took a night position, etc. I started slipping little by little and although it wasn't too bad initially, as time went on I started having regain. Then I lost a parent, graduated grad school, went back AGAIN for a Doctorate, changed jobs again, etc. Finally about 2.75 yrs post op I got some super sobering health news (a condition that my surgery had corrected was back) and had to get real with myself. I had to seriously have a 'come to Jesus' moment with myself and realized the TOOL was still there. I went strict Keto and never looked back. I now have successfully lost my regain, am back where I was at my lowest post op, and am working to maybe drop another 20. No, I can't and probably never will again, eat what I really want to. I'm ok with that. My health condition is hopefully under control. I feel good. I have remained on track. I consider myself a bariatric success and I know a LOT of folks who weren't as fortunate.

All I want to do is cheat on my diet
TacosBeforeGuapos replied to 90’schild's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hear ya, chocolate is my weakness. That and Dr Pepper. I’ve been trying hard to find keto or sugar free chocolate candies so I won’t feel so bad but here and there I’m tempted with a bite of real chocolate. I will say that I found some keto ice cream bars called enlightenment that I would never have guessed were keto. They were dark chocolate caramel peanut or something but they were delicious. My point is, everyone has their weakness so don’t feel bad. You’re definitely not alone here. -
Yep, ordering appetisers are the way to go though I used to struggle to eat those too. I opt for seafood whenever possible. Oh & make sure you keep to the no drinking before of after. I made that mistake out of the habit of ordering a pre dinner drink when out & I could barely eat two or three bites of what I ordered. Don’t be afraid to mention to the staff (privately if you prefer) that you’re on a medically restricted diet otherwise you may face the wait staff asking if something was wrong with your unfinished meal. My biggest difficulty is needing time to eat. When everyone else eats quickly, the wait staff are wanting to clear plates & you’re not even half way through your meal. Since we’ve opened up a lot more here in Australia, I’ve met friends for lunch a couple of times but some places only offer tables for 45mins. By the time you read the menu, wait for your order to be taken, prepared & served, there’s little time left to eat. I had 10 mins at a cafe last week. My friend devoured her lunch. I got three bites in & took the rest home for dinner. Are you able to take a small cold bag with ice bricks with you when you travel? I take frozen keto frittata muffins with me & refreeze the ice bricks overnight. There are some decent protein bars around too. Just ensure they’re low in carbs, sugar & fat. You may to try a few first because some can be too gluggy & my tummy complains. Easy to grab a high protein yoghurt from a corner store too.

Unusual rapid weight after years post op?!
itstimealready replied to Hoppy123's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had sleeve surgery in 2016 and got down to 160 pounds, then lost the last 30 doing keto. I stayed at 130 pounds almost perfect for me for 3 years then all the sudden this covid quarantine has me 23 pounds weight gain in just a few months! I’m eating sweets like crazy and bread and just a complete carb fest I don’t know what has gotten into me but it’s scaring me. -
liver shrink diets aren’t the same
Arabesque replied to Thicc chick 504's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Seems to be lots of variations of pre surgery diets. I was on a keto diet for 2.5weeks before with no minimum weight loss required. One friend was on 2 weeks all shakes no specified weight loss required Another was on 2 meals shakes & one meal high protein, no carbs over 4weeks with a minimum weight loss requirement. I found the diet helped get you in the new mindset in regard to eating. Good luck with your surgery. -
I've scratched my pizza itch using a keto chicken crust recipe. This is the one I found on the Baritastic app, but there are tons of similar ones out there. Protein packed, very low carb, and you can control the fat content very easily. https://fitmencook.com/low-carb-pizza/

Metallic Taste in my Mouth

Metallic Taste in my Mouth
Pckeys replied to Dee.Lams's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
you're very likely in ketosis. The metallic taste (at the back of the throat and sides of the tongue?) is a result of breaking down and using ketones, the by-product of which is acetyl-CoA and acetate.... dont worry about it it indicates your insulin and blood sugar levels are dropping.. also a good thing. It will resolve through the day then come back periodically. This goes away entirely for most people who enter ketosis and stay there after a few weeks. More info, look up "keto breath" -
Stage 1 Diet and Ice Cream
JessikaL replied to anna_queen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes! Yes! Yasso bars are amazing. I'm 3 weeks postop and I got the fudge bars. They're the perfect size and have a good bit of protein. I also don't like halo top flavors, the salted caramel swirl is the only tolerable one I've encountered. However, I love nightfood and enlightened, both are lower calorie icecreams with good flavor selection. Enlightened even has a keto line! My two favorite flavors are enlightened cold brew and nightfood cherry eclipse but I haven't tried either postop Sent from my SM-G986U using BariatricPal mobile app -
All I want to do is cheat on my diet
NerdySongBird replied to 90’schild's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can't stand the shakes because I'm really not a big fan of sweets. I just moved on to the soft solids stage of my diet and the hard part for me is separating liquids from meals. I reccomend Genepro protein powder because a tiny scoop is 30g of protein. You can put it in just about anything and it's amazing! And when you advance your diet there is a keto version of pretty much everything you crave. Hang in there! Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Foods that don't like me no mo: Cooked kale greens, although I may give them another try this fall; chicken breast (too dry), chicken thighs on occasion, bread (not that I eat a lot anyway), paleo/keto pancakes -- basically complex carbs…. And thanks!

Since I got no counseling beyond a sheet of paper, that said I could eat , lightly, after a month. I went from shakes and soups to regular food. I was eating high protein, very small portions— 800 calories. I was not losing for a month. I started using ProTracker, Keto/Calorie. I stay under 1100c., and track every morsel. I keep carbs under 50, and fats low. I have lost my desire for junk. I’m surprised I haven’t s sprouted feathers, I eat so much chicken. It’s slow, but almost steady. I had a serious leg injury, and my mobility is not yet where it should be, but I try to do what I can. It’s just good to no longer be controlled by food. Good Luck to you. -
Big trouble 3 years out. Please help

Update, after another week of struggling to eat anything that is not liquid, I have been able to get the ultrasound done, and not gallbladder is present, not even small stones, totally clean. The next step is to get the endoscopy done. In the meantime I start to consider 3 new scenarios: 1) anxiety. This could trigger reflux and extrasystole and after 3 months of lockdown could be possible....but I am not feeling stressed at all 2) 3 months of KETO destroyed my stomach and now I need a month of detox. Be honest I had my keto January to March and then I stopped because I have started to have these problems (In March was only about strong reflux, but not extrasystole. 3) Gas problems. I have noticed that the amount of gas I produce is equal to a cow, this could push the stomach up and compromise the cardiac to close properly and for this reason reflux start to get worst Let me know if you guys have the same problems too.. So, keep you posted, to help other people that could go through this after the gastric sleeve. Cheers I will do the -

Chalcrow: I know what you mean about “head hunger”. I still can’t overeat, in one sitting. I can only manage three ounces of protein, and then I get the signal. But I am aware that I could graze myself into oblivion. I use ProTracker, Keto/calorie app. It’s free. I try to track every morsel. It makes me accountable to myself. If I’m having a boring, uneventful day, and I know I’m going to be looking for a sweet, or savory snack in the evening, I’ll keep my caloric intake low during the day, so I can have my Parmesan wisps, or slimfast caramel crunch, fat bomb, later. If I know I want a high calorie item, like a hot dog, I’ll make sure I have only two ounces of protein, like chicken, egg or tuna, for lunch. WW didn’t work for me. There was too much freedom. The fruits became a problem. -

I had my surgery 3/9, then got no support. Was stalled the first month. It was more than frustrating. I think I’m down 40 pounds, including the presurgical loss. I had hoped it would be faster. I reached out to the doctor. All he said was, Do you want to be a pile of skin?” The office support is non existent. I am using the ProTracker, Keto/calorie, free app. If I go no carb, I stall. Too much protein, I have a gout attack. Have been diligent about keeping carbs under 50, Calories under 1000. Exercise is sporadic, as I had a serious leg injury, in April. I have no desire to binge, which is a big plus, no cravings for anything. I’m doing all I can, and focus on that. A pound-a pound and a half, a week, will have to do. It’s the mystery up a pound, that’s hard to take. -
Good luck Eric. I had the same problem - sleeve 3 years ago, lost 100 pounds in 8 months, gained back 60 over the next 2.5 years. I tried resetting my pouch and going back to pre-op diet mode, but nothing really worked for me. In the end I decided to have a revision to bypass earlier this year. I've been losing weight consistently (but slowly) since then. However, it hasn't affected any real change - I can eat just about anything (pizza, bread, pasta, whatever - serving sizes are normal portions, not bariatric portions). For the most part I DON'T eat these things (still doing shakes and fish and salad, etc.), but every now and then I've just been pushing to see if there is anything that my body does not like/can't handle. There's nothing. I'm really disappointed because I thought the even smaller stomach would help with portion control (it doesn't), that having bypass would make me not like sugar (it doesn't), or that I would have other food issues (like lactose intolerance - I don't). So it's a good wake-up call for me that portion control and what I eat is the key - I can't depend on the surgery to help me out, other than initial weight loss. For whatever reason, my body has reacted to these surgeries really well. In both cases I was up and walking and feeling great within a day after surgery, I never had food restrictions like so many others (I could eat at 3 months what many patients could at 2 years post-op), and I never had any food issues after surgery either. I'm saying all this in that the second surgery didn't fix any of my food/body issues, it's all a mind game, really. In a way I wish I hadn't had the second surgery (money-wise), but if I hadn't done it, I don't know if I would have learned these lessons as well. FWIW, I think the best plan for me going forward is a mix of protein-prioritized keto (or maybe paleo) mixed with intermittent fasting (I'll start with 12 hours and work my way down to 8 hours, maybe to 6 eventually), plus adding some weight training to my regimen. I'm working on weaning myself off of all my bad habits over the next week or so and will be starting fresh on July 1st. Hopefully others can chime in with what they've done to deal with weight regain after surgery. Unfortunately I think a lot of people who do tend to leave these forums (as I did), so I'm hoping that sticking around here on a regular basis will keep me more motivated.

Food Before and After Photos
ms.sss replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yes, I did! It ended up getting marinated for almost 2 days (due to me gilling them the day after I originally meant to)! Since I had more chops than usual, I tripled the recipe below, and then before grilling, I boiled the marinade to reduce a little then added 1/2 tsp of cornstarch to thicken a bit more. I then used this as a baste during grilling (careful: the oil and sugar content will cause mighty flare ups if it gets to drippy!) 2 tbsp olive oil 1/2 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup honey (or brown sugar) 3 tbsp minced garlic 2 tsp sesame oil 2 tsp ginger minced 2 tbsp sriracha sauce 1 tsp black pepper * can make this more Keto if you sub the soy sauce for tamari, the honey with brown sugar stevia, and the sriracha with chilli flakes or cayenne. And if you want to baste, sub the cornstarch with xanthan gum. I wasn't planning on having any (I had chicken) so I did it the regular way. -
What diet did your Dietician/nutritionalist put you on to lose your pre-surgery weight? Shakes? Keto? You need to follow the plan they gave you.
