Lapband with or without plication
blondegal_ replied to carlak's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have it. I wouldn't say I've lost more/faster because if it. But I do feel like it has helped with being hungry before reaching the green zone. You will see some people post about being starving. I haven't felt that. Sure I've been hungry but never to a point where I exceeded my calories. I have about 1000 calories a day with my doctor giving me an upper limit of 1250. Good luck with your decision. -
My Reality check at 20 months

Just want to add that I see a lot of posts like this, so you're very much not alone. You might want to search the site for regain etc. Also - take a look in the vets forum. I think that's where there's a thread about the 5:2 method, where you eat normally for 5 days of the week and 2 days a week you eat very low calories - about 5-600 I think. Apparently it really helps jumpstart losing again. -
I am scheduled to have surgery on 4/21/08 and VCU Medical Center by Dr. John Kellam. I am excited and scared and anxious all at the same time. I have been overweight all my life but not extremely obese. I have now come to the stage in my life where I realize that all the dieting and exercising that I am doing are giving me some muscles but not helping me to lose weight. I think that as you get older, it becomes harder to lose weight. So I'm looking at this surgery as the way to reorder my way of thinking about food. My greatest fear now is that I'm not up to the challenge and my most immediate concern is the 2 week preop liquid diet. I have visions of starving and falling into a hypoglycemia coma. Then I laugh at myself for worrying so much because no fat person ever died from a low calorie diet - too many fat reserves in the body. I am 5'3" and currently weigh 220. Luckily for me, my insurance will pay everything but $35 copays for physicians and $100 copay for hospital admission. I'm looking forward to the changes this year will bring.

I agree with rensterness -- protein and water are key. I'm 6 weeks out, and at my latest weigh-in, I'm just under 50 pounds down. I make it a point to get in every ounce of water daily, plus I take in 85g protein daily on average. Never less than 60g, sometimes as much as 100-105g. My nutritionist says this is why I'm losing like I am, and although I don't think I'm losing spectacularly or abnormally, I don't necessarily consider myself a slow loser at this point. Similarly to rensterness, I also keep my carbs/sugars in check. I take in many more calories than other sleevers I see around here (about 850 daily), but I keep my carb count between 50-65 daily. My nut feels like my calories will drop a bit when I'm no longer on soft food and adding things to my protein to soften it. Either way, she and I are both pleased with my progress. -
Approved For Gastric Sleeve Surgery!

Congratulations! You will need lots of liquids. I recommend campbell's chicken noodle soup and pour the juice off because the plain broth is disgusting. Gatorade G2 because it is low in calories, sugar and 0 fat. Jello, popcicles and italian ice (can be a discomfort if it is too cold so eat slowly) I hope this helps and I wish you the best. :whoo: -
Living with lapband diet
Jachut replied to Stevelovesmusic's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I can tolerate some skins, like on potatoes or stone fruits, etc but I cant eat apple skins. I had the same worries though - I read everything on here and here there is a very protein focussed trend, it really worried me since to me a chicken breast and a few vegetables does not make a healthy meal - personally I consider the vegetables the more important of the two foods. I have continued to eat my way, I'm in Australia and we're not given the same guidelines anyway. Guess what? There's more than one way to skin a cat. I'm healthy, happy, normal weight, have all my hair and I most definitely dont eat enough protein by American standards. I'm also quite confident that I have a better long term outlook for bowel health and blood chemistry because I do eat carbs in good quanities - wholegrains, fruits and vegetables. If I can only fit so much in, I will always always choose my vegies over my protein. I actually decided not to be banded initially because the protein heavy, vegetable poor (by which I mean quantity - in Australia we have a guideline of 2 fruit, five veg every single day) diet seemed unhealthy to me. But I've found that you can eat any way you damn well please, as long as its healthy, lowish in fat, and low enough in calories and you exercise, you'll lose weight, barring of course that some people absolutely do have metabolic issues that are best managed by low carb diets. That's not to diss ANYONE's dietary choices, its simply what I believe is relevant to myself and my lifestyle. I also felt that mental health is an enormous part of our health in general and that achieving normality - giving up this stupid obsession with dieting, counting, foodwatching forever, for once and for all - was every single bit as important as achieving a healthy weight. If I have perfect nutrition but spend all freaking day obsessing over it, I have not achieved good health! So I eat what I want, when I want, most of the time its good, sometimes its not, I use food appropriately - for nutrition and as a social custom also, I can partake of things like sweet foods and alcohol moderately and my diet is most definitely NOT perfect. But because I have made such gains in terms of the mental side of it, I'd consider my outcome an extremely successful one. -
Anybody on Atkins?
BigUtahMan replied to hermione53's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The Atkins diet is now usually referred to as the Keto diet or Ketogenic diet, which I also follow and enjoy. The premise is using your fat as primary source of energy rather than carbs. I think you should absolutely do it and see how your body adapts. As for me, I have lost all hunger pains and do not crave sugar or carbs like I use to even post opp eating my meal plan. I have lost about 10 pounds this month so far, (first 20 days) so I like that as well. The best thing about this diet, is I do believe it can be sustained as a sleever, as you are already 80% there as others have commented. My macros I try and hit are 30 grams net carbs, 75-100 grams Protein, and 100 + grams fat. (I try and stay between 1200-1500 calories per day.) -

Hi Judy ~ try not to be discouraged!! I think honestly the huge amount you lost right away has a lot to do with it. I am May 20th so we are right on track with each other and I've lost 41 lbs, just in a different way. 18 first week, then 10 over the next 2 weeks, then 5, then I stalled for a bit, then 4, then 3. Every time you lose 20-30 lbs your body takes a while to adjust before moving on. If you really think you may need changes, examine your calories (should be 600-800 a day the first year) that's net calories meaning if you exercise and burn 200, then you should eat 800-1000 so that you net 600-800. You can always try upping your exercise also. I have been doing 30-60 mins 4-5 days a week. Just hang in there - it will work! Also congrats on getting off all the meds!! -
Congrats on your weight loss! Whether you need a fill is something that only you and your surgeon or PA can answer after considering the following: How volume can you eat? How many meals a day do you eat? How long after eating are you hungry? That being said, plateaus are a normal part of the weight loss process. They can be frustrating if we let them. Are you sure you are only eating 1,000 calories a day? Are you logging your food and drink? When we estimate, we usually estimate to low. Are you drinking at least 64 ounces of Water a day? Are you consuming at least 50 grams of Protein daily? If the answer is yes to those 3 questions, try eating 200 more calories a day. It sounds backwards but the more fuel you give your body, the hotter the fire burns. If you gain after a week; cut it back down.

Milk is a good (not great) source of Protein. unjury has a chicken Soup flavored Protein powder, which I have a sample of, but have been as yet afraid to try. If you're still on the full liquids phase, you could blenderize some cottage cheese with a little milk to thin it down. Cottage cheese is a great source of protein. Personally, I don't like ANY of the sweetened protein powders or shakes. None of them taste good to me, and they all seem to give me the trots. Always keep in mind that this phase of the post op diet is NOT for weight loss, it's for healing, so try not to worry too much about your calorie intake right now.

Okay I'm getting worried that I might not loss anymore weight. I'm currently 6 weeks out and I intake about 800 calories per day and I get all of my Protein in (like 70-90) and I get all of my Water in (80-120 ozs) and I work out every other day burning 700-800 calories on the treadmill. My question is will this 10 day plataue ever end. I'm scared I've might have messed up by getting this surgery and it don't work for me. I've only lost 20 pds since 2/15 and 15 pds on a 14 day pre-op diet. Here is my eating schedule: B: Protein shake S: Low Fat Cottage cheese L: 2-3 oz Tuna with 1 oz lowfat string cheese S: Protein Shake D: 2 oz Salmon, with 1 oz broccoli S: (2) SF popsicles before bed. Help any one! Sheka

1 Week out - Tired & Confused
marieelaine replied to phoeebs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am out 9 days and am struggling with the liquids. This may be a dumb question but does the protein shake count toward liquids? I too find that endurance is an issue. But having 600 calories a day can be hard on your body. Good luck everyone... One day at a time. -
Has anyone heard of Raw Protien? It is 17 gms of protein,80 calories per scoop. It is brown rice protien. Live probiotics and enzyme. Raw,vegan, gluten free, dairy free. I a, looking for something to put in broth or other foods that might not have protein. I am on week out from surgery. Is there any problem with live probiotics at this point?

Having Trouble Finding Foods
PaulB replied to snowangel81's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Talk to your nutritionist about your food problems they are there to help. Myself I just have to try different foods to see what will stay down and what does not sit well. My doctor just kind of yelled at me Becuse I'm not getting in a enough calories and Protein. He said to start adding in Protein Bars like Adkins or Quest bars for a snack or Meal Replacement. Got to get the calories up and protein up to get body out of starvation mode. That will help you lose weight a little faster Surgery Anniversary 7/30/12 -

Hi again, I found this & thought some of us might be interested? (here's where I saw it:http://www.bospa.org/Information.aspx?Page=19) Pre-op liver reduction plan Just because you are awaiting a surgical treatment for your morbid obesity, this is not an excuse to sit back and gorge out on as much food as you can! Any weight you can lose through dieting before your surgery is an advantage - it will make the surgery easier and will reduce the risks associated with it. Some surgeons mandate a very restricted diet - one that is low in fat, sugar and carbohydrates - for one week prior to surgery and even if your surgeon doesn't ask you to follow this diet, doing so will increase your chances of your operation being completed laparoscopically because it will shrink your liver down in size. By following a strict diet, your body reduces its glycogen stores (glycogen is a form of sugar stored in the liver and muscles for energy). With each ounce of glycogen, the body stores 3–4 ounces of Water, so when you follow a very strict diet, especially one that is low in starch and sugar, your body loses its glycogen stores and some water. The liver shrinks as it has less glycogen and water in it. This diet is only recommended for one week before surgery and is not to be followed post–operatively. It is quite possible you lose a lot of weight that week, but it will be mainly be water loss. Please ensure you continue to drink throughout the day. Here are some menu suggestions: Breakfast Small bowl of Cereal, or 1 slice of toast with a scraping of low fat spread lunch 1 slice bread or 2 crispbreads Small portion lean meat or fish, or Small portion cheese, or 2 eggs (not fried) Green salad (no dressing) or tomatoes dinner Small portion lean meat or fish, or Small portion low fat cheese, or 2 eggs, or Tofu or Quorn based dish 1 small potato or 2 tablespoonfuls Pasta or rice Vegetables (as many as you like except for root vegetables) Daily 1/3 pint milk for use in drinks and on cereal 2 portions of fruit (e.g. apple, orange, banana, pear) Free water, tea, coffee, low calorie squash or fizzy drinks 1 low fat, low sugar yogurt or fromage frais

Protein shakes - Yuck!
BubblyBandit replied to svince's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am being banded on December 18 also! I am also on my pre op diet day 3 to be exact! The doctor put me on optifast which he ordered before I started. It was expensive but the tasted isnt' too bad. I get 5 a day and they are flavored in chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. It comes out to about 800 or so calories a day. -
Hi all, I'm very new to all this but I felt like I needed somewhere to go where people can relate. I had my lap band surgury on Aug. 9th. I went to Hamot in Erie PA. I had a wonderful experience there with my surgury and the staff. That's not the problem. I was 270 when I started out. I have only lost 20 pounds since. The band itself I feel is not the result of my weight loss. It was the grueling low calorie diet I was on before surgury and the 3 weeks of liquids after. I have had 3 fills with the last one being last week. I feel the hurt when I eat too fast or too much but I can still snack away. My doctor has now prescribed an appetite suppressant for me. It gives me a little energy boost and I am hoping for some results soon. Anyone had any similar problems? I have slipped up on the exercising and trying to eat better. I am trying to get back on track. I think I lost hope after so many months of no weight loss. Any suggestions?:help:

New to the site but here's my "size up"
Sharon's last chance replied to dfdscott's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
If you haven't tried the sweetener Truvia, you might want to. It is zero calorie, truly tastes like sugar, and for me, has absolutely no after taste. I would be lost without it. -
That is incredible! 100 lbs gone! Woohoo! I wasn't sure where you were in your post-op, but if you're exercising, you can probably benefit from some carbs. As to the slow down, with the amount of weight you've lost, you are bound to slow down now. I see from your profile that you're less than 30 lbs from your goal weight. Now comes the hard part.......making those last pounds disappear! In the beginning, the calorie deficit between your basal metabolic rate (BMR) and your daily calorie intake was quite large. And you were losing fast. Now, the deficit is probably much smaller and the loss is slowing down dramatically. The best way to combat this is to increase your calorie deficit. Since you're already eating such a small amount, the only place left for you to make an adjustment is in your exercise. Each minute spent working out will pay off in the end and get you to goal. It may not be fast and it sure as heck won't be easy. But it will be satisfying.........and make you fabulously fit! Stick with it girl..........you're in sight of the goal line......keep up the fantastic work!

LOL on the hot dog! I tried some turkey ones a week or two ago, and they weren't great either. Once I started soft and mushy, I was eating a wide variety. Often, whenever I tried something new, my stomach would gurgle like crazy. Everything stayed down tho! And it wasn't like a sick feeling, just odd. Try this link; it might give you some ideas for foods. This is primarily what I followed and it worked great for me. It also has some recommended numbers for calories, carbs and Protein. http://www.cornellweightlosssurgery.org/pdf/dietary_guidelines_sleeve_gastrectomy.pdf The above says to wait until the 4th month for fresh vegies and salad. I have had a little as garnish along the way. Did eat maybe half a cup or so last week and it settled fine. I will probably stay away from heavy duty carrots, broccoli, etc for now and just do mixed green salad. I really miss it! good luck!

While trying to lose weight I ate between 900 - 1000 calories for 2 years. I did not increase my calories to 1200 until the last 30 lbs and I needed the extra calories for working out and doing strength training. Not to be critical, I do not think a DQ Blizzard is on our list of healthy choices. While trying to lose weight high calorie deserts and food choices should be avoided, try a healthy alternative a banana or apple. I know boring but you have to decide what you want to lose weight and be healthy or to continue to eat the same garbage that brought you to this site. I chose to eat healthy and it pays off and so did Floridays. You can't lose the amount of weight we have lost and continue to eat the same way. Get over the guilt and tomorrows another day.

wondering if you would share your results at 6 mos. post op?
sarao replied to sarahh1828's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am almost 5 months out and I have gone from 229 pounds to 166 pounds. A loss of 55 pounds post op and 8 pounds pre-op so a total loss of 63 pounds. I went from a size 18 pants to size 12 pants. Let me say that many people have a misconception about lap band surgery being a miracle surgery and that you don't have to do anything but sit back and lose weight...WRONG!!! Your tool will only give you back whatever you put into it. I have to watch what I eat/count calories and do exercise. Good luck to everyone on their journey!!! -
Hi everyone! It's been quiet here lately! I just wanted to stop in and see how everyone is doing. It's been about 8 months now!!! I was thinking about Labor Day and my upcoming family reunion. I would really like to drop 10 lbs this month. I've been averaging 8 lbs a month but I want more!! Anyone want to join me? My plan: Eat 1200 calories a day and exercise 5X a week for 4 weeks. I have never really stuck to this plan, but now I'm setting a goal! Wish me luck...
