  1. Has anybody tried these? $3 each but worth it for the liquids phase post op?

    Insurance hoops.....

I found everything necessary for the pre-op portion, I took nutrition classes, psych eval, and the pre-op class. I can't tell you how many times I've referred to the paperwork given to my in my pre-op class because most of the time, the questions I had were right in front of me. No one can fully prepare you for the life change you are about to embark on, but having as much information as possible a head of time is priceless. I had all my paperwork saved in a 3-ring binder with notes, stickies and what not reminding me of things that could come up. My post-op appointments have been great as well, I walk in with a list of questions and if they don't address something on my list I go right through them with me. The more well versed you are the better prepared you are, but until the surgery happens, you still have no idea what you're in for. I am so thankful for the prep I received prior to surgery and the research I did on my own. I think my mindset and knowledge helped me stay focused and not go through some of the emotional roller coasters that others faced post surgery.

    Very Excited

I finally got my exact operation date yesterday, the 9th oct, in the afternoon, and am so excited, it has taken me 19 months to get to this point and it still feels unreal. I have started to think about what to take into hosital with me, and have found some new slippers, got some new pink towels, and toothpaste, lol, i am concentrating on this because i havn't yet received my liver shrinking diet, i am allergic to cows milk, so have to follow the alternaive diet, i start it on the 25th sept, and am impatient to find out what it consists of. The dietician was suppose to send it out to me last week, but as usual, what he is supposed to do for me isn't happening, but at least the specialist nurse said she would get straight onto him and i should have it soon. I have been doing the dukan protein only since saturday, but went off it yesterday after the phone call with the op date, i had jacket tattie with cheese and curry for lunch, and raspberries and light elmlea, and for supper shared a lamb rogan with rice and popadoms with hubby, really enjoyed them, but back on protein only till tomorrow, can't wait to add veg to the diet. Hope everyone is doing ok, take care, Janet. x
  5. Hi Jill, thanks for starting such a great thread here. I started my process in June and started to see a therapist in July specifically to talk about my relationship with food. It's not like I haven't been working on all of this for, say, twenty-two years or so, but I knew I needed to tap all resources possible for this big new change in my life. I've been able to determine some areas that are red flags for me. I was eating to tamp down anxiety and stress but also out of habit. If I had a conference call coming up or a meeting with clients I would eat as a way to prep myself and as a kind of reward for something I didn't really want to do. Also all the years of deprivation and being on or off of one diet or another screwed my head up and I worried that being banded might not work. But it will -- I'm getting it next week and I can't wait. With my appetite dimmed I will be able to really assess what is going on when I have an impulse to eat. It might be the healthy kind, good old hunger which of course is elusive now pre-band but I understand post band it's very clear. I feel so willing to do whatever it takes. I still want to be able to have whatever it is I want because I am a healthy eater now and love food that's good for me, but I'll just be having much, much less and at appropriate intervals. I think it's going to be hard sometimes but not hard like it's been for me for so long feeling so screwed up about a basic thing like eating. And I'm a cook. I'm into food, production cooking and I still will be doing all that. Just not sitting down to a big plate and then grazing before and after. Best wishes to you as you go through the process. We are all here together for a reason.

    Pregnancy after gastric sleeve?

Hi italianlady13, I am not a seasoned sleever yet but I am a seasoned bander, LOL. I am having a revision from a band to sleeve on 06/23/11. The more I am reading it seems as though I am one of the MANY people having a revision from band to sleeve. I know there have been many people who have been successful with the band but from my experience I do regret it. I did initially lose 60 lbs. with the band but that was only because I could not keep any food down and I pretty much lived off of Soup. When they would loosen the band then there was no restriction at all. I guess they never really found that happy in-between. I have been having the band since 2006 and in 2010 I got pregnant. My doctor loosened the band just a little but I gained a whopping 80lbs for ny pregnancy. My baby is now 7 months old and of the 80 lbs I gained for the pregnancy I have been able to lose 20lbs. This puts me right back where I was before I got Lap Band. I went to have an upper GI X-Ray done 2 weeks ago and find out that my band has partially slipped and it can slip completely at any time which if that were to happen it would be an emergency surgery. So now I am scheduled to have this band out and a revision to the sleeve. I always thought that somewhere maybe 25-30 years down the road the band would have to come out, I just never thought that it would be 5 years later. I will be more than happy to have this band out and to hopefully be able to eat a small amount of food and be full without throwing up every single meal. Anyhow, I am sure that you will choose the best choice for you and again everyone is different. I just wanted to share my story with you. Best of luck to you!

    endoscopic gastric sleeve

my main worry is im a real coward when it comes to pain, and healing and it seems a short recovery time as opposed to 3 -8 weeks of soreness and liquid diets etc etc seems like a quick fix and i like it! but need a little more info, i dont mind being a guinea pig, i have NHS care if the worse case scenario i would be seen, and i work in spain so also covered for emergencies etc. my BMI is 35 so i fall in to the category for this rather than gastric. anyway im hoping to have the op done early July one way or another i will try and keep updated especially if i have the endoscopic choice
  9. hi all i am currently looking at my options for a gastric sleeve, on one site in the UK a new procedure is for endoscopic non surgical gastric sleeve, it promises less invasion, not cuts scars and a 3 day healing time, this seems too good to be true so i thought i would see if i could find someone who has had this done?. this a new procedure which looks to staple the stomach from the inside, so i dont know if the effects are the same as noram sleeve op, IE hunger hormone release etc . any information greatly received claire

4ounces by weight or volume ?

Buy a scale. I found out 4 oz of chicken is a lot more meat than 4 oz of steak as the meats and foods can be denser. If I would have guessed I would have been wrong so the scale is really working for me. It also teaches me what 4 oz looks like. Good luck! I'm 3 months out and halfway to my goal. During the "honeymoon" period I have been very strict and cautious as this is the time to lose.
  11. Which one do you do ? Which one is right? Puree phase I did 4 ounce to fit in a 4 ounce container. Now I'm 6 week out. 4 ounces of Solis food won't fit in a 4 once container. ( it might if I cut it up) I want to do this right... I bought so many 4 ounce containers now I'm thinking of just buying small container's for meal prep.
  12. I'm still pre-op and have been on my pre-op diet a little over a month (doc is requiring I lose 38lbs before surgery). The first month, I wasn't super strict and only lost 9lbs. Since Tuesday, I've been in turbo mode and have lost almost 10lbs thanks to the plan my dietician put me on. It's super low calorie (1200 or less), high Protein (50%), low carb (20%), low fat (30%). The last two days, I have been extremely emotional/weepy! Yesterday, I broke down crying in the office at work with a coworker because my parents aren't coming over today for my birthday (it's Monday). It's not like that is a huge deal. My parents are super supportive and I see them fairly often. They just had something come up and can't make the 2 hour drive today. Today, I just sobbed uncontrollably over a video about a soldier and his therapy dog. It was a positive story but I couldn't stop crying. Lol! I'm not suffering from PMS (I'm fairly regular and still 2 weeks away from that) but this feels like the worst case of PMS ever. Had anyone else ever had this experience while losing weight?
  13. My date is Tuesday and I am getting anxious and scared. I have not been on any pre-op diet, but I have been trying several different Protein drinks and shakes in the last several days. I am also watching my carbs and eating high protein. I do have to do an all Clear liquids tomorrow in prep for surgery on Tuesday. I am still in shock that this is really happening.
  14. I will have had the surgery one week ago tomorrow. I must say that it was harder than I thought. A lot of people that I knew who've had the sleeve, said they felt wonderful by day 4. I felt pretty good in the hospital. While they were doing the surgery, they found I needed hernia repair and they repaired it while they were in there. I knew that was a possibility. They sent me home the next day. When I got home, I really started feeling the pain. And it worried me! But I talked with the surgeons office and they said this was normal and just the healing process. I feel much better today and realize that it just takes some people longer to heal... I have to remember that they did two things during the one surgery and they both need the time to heal. Anybody else experienced or experiencing something similar?

    upset

Here's something I copied from ButterTheBean (a veteran sleever): If your weight loss has stalled, read THIS. You are certainly not alone. I've been in a stall for 6 weeks. I thought I had it conquered at one point, but now I'm right back where I was, number-wise.

    Struggling

I was sleeved this last week September 2nd. I feel a lot better this week. I was doing awesome since getting home from the hospital up until yesterday. I started getting cravings for anything and everything I know I shouldn't have and idk how to curve these cravings! I don't wanna mess up on my diet and I definitely don't want to risk a leak and I don't want to cheat around my diet. Any suggestions on recipes or foods/soups that you found helped you get through the liquid 2 weeks post op!!

    Pumpers and Sleeve Surgery

I had my surgery on 24 July and I to am on an insulin pump (medtronic). I was having some weird things happening with me. I would have a Protein shake with one cup of milk and would bolus for 20 grams of carbs but my BG would zoom up to 180 or so. Then the rest of the day I would do ok on my basal only but at about 5:00 pm my BG would crash to the low 50's. I had to start suspending my pump at night and would wake up the next morning to start over with the same thing. My endo finally told me to simply disconnect the pump all together for a week and see how it went. My BG is now not less than 156 and goes up to around 220 and stays there most of the time. I think I will be getting off the pump but I do think that at least for a while I may need either some insulin or or an oral drug to hold me over while my weight decreases. I have lost about 30 pounds in 3 weeks and I am sure that my weight loss will continue. I just don't know what my diabetes will do to cooperate. I am 60 years old and have been diabetic since my mid 30's. So to be totally honest I don't think that I will be completely "cured". Perhaps if I had gotten the surgery 30 years ago it would have been different. But you will never know till you try. I have gotten pretty tired of pumping insulin.
  18. I am now 3 days smoke free by quiting cold turkey and 5 days soda free lost 5 pounds already
  19. I'M one week out from surgery and now on just liquids. I'm drinking the Bariatric Advantage and I like it and am satisfied. However I just woke up from a nap and made a bowl of 1/2 cup of lf cottage cheese and salsa on top. Wasn't hungry just wanted the flavor. Hope I haven't screwed things up.

    Jitters

So, with surgery scheduled for 12/20/12, I am well on my way to what feels like starving on this pre-surgery diet. I was told I could have two Slim Fast drinks and one Lean Cuisine meal each day. Why does it seem like this is torture? My head hurts, my energy is non-existent, and I am grumpy. I am trying my best not to bite anyone's head off, but it is really hard with a 5 year old and 3 year old that are so full of life. So, what can I eat to supplement this liver shrinking diet that won't counter-act the shrinking part. I ate a pickle today. I ate a bite of chicken yesterday. From what I am reading, most of these diets are liquid only. Would soup be okay? Thanks to anyone and everyone. All information is appreciated and welcomed!
  21. Found out today that my surgery is on April 18th, not April 25th like I thought. I start my pre-op diet (5 meal replacement shakes a day for 2 weeks) on Monday. Now I just have to hope and pray my FMLA is approved, which isn't my biggest worry. My biggest worry is the amount of money they are going to ask me to pay up front the day of surgery (my insurance co-pay). I hope it's an amount that I can handle...all these new prescriptions, vitamins, shake mix, calcium chews, etc. are all so expensive. I hope I'm not doing it all for nothing just to find out I can't afford the surgery itself. I need this so bad...hopefully it all works out.
  22. I've been considering and researching surgery for 2 years, decided to go ahead with it back in February. But, I had a Disney vacation scheduled for this past week (first time we took the kids!) and knew I wanted to be able to fully enjoy the vacation without worrying about anything before getting things officially started. I wasn't horrible about the food, but I definitely ate more (and more Desserts and such) in general than I usually do. Thankfully we walked miles every day and I drank a ton of Water in addition to the Snacks, indulgent meals, and a few fancy drinks throughout the week. We got back this morning, and on Monday I have my informational seminar. I already have the paperwork and list of requirements; I plan to get my PCP referral in place and get all my tests and appointments scheduled this week. I didn't have any major weight-related issues on vacation, besides being really really hot and sweaty (but it was 90 degrees and I live in New England where we're still in the 60s for high temps, so I guess that wasn't unreasonable ) . One day I almost got sick due to the heat. I'm sure part of that was due to lugging around an extra 125lbs of fat. My knees and ankles are pretty angry right now, too; again I'm sure due to the extra weight. Thankfully, I fit on all the rides I wanted to, no problem on the plane (I was really worried about getting asked to buy a second ticket but I fit in the seat no problem and even had extra belt to spare, whew!). BUT, I have about 300 pictures and hate the way I look in about 75% of them. The ones I do like, I'm hiding behind my kids. I am so ready to move forward with the next chapter of my life - the "healthy" chapter! I'm beyond excited to see what the next year brings
  23. Okay new recipe that whole family will love. You might need to serve it to them over rice, for carbs, but I eat it as is, or over spaghetti squash, or miracle noodles (actually I ordered some, I have not tried them yet, but they have zero calories and carbs, I ordered some) Ok, bored with Protein and 600 calorie stage 3 and 4 diet so I have used my cooking skills, over 30 years in the restaurant industry, to come up with a tasty good for US Chinese dish! This makes a lot, it freezes pretty well, adjust for your desired amount. I like to cook ahead and freeze. 2 24oz packages of turkey tenderloin (I got them as buy one get one free) 1 can chicken broth 1 large can Chinese lo mein veggies 2 cans sliced Water chestnuts 2 cans bamboo slices 1 lb fresh snow peas 1 packaged sliced Portobello mushrooms 1 zucchini, diced 2 bunches green onions 6 garlic gloves diced 1 cinnamon stick 1 tablespoon pumpkin spice ( I didn't have all spice or 5 spice, it is really close, plus every cook has some) 2 table spoons red pepper flakes 2 tablespoons Cajun spice 2 tablespoons squeeze bottle fresh ginger, or diced fresh 5 tablespoons amino acid, which you will find has zero calories, and is a perfect substitute for soy sauce 2 packages of mushroom gravy mix, store brand, usually 25 calories for serving, 4 to a packet, this makes a lot 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 3 tablespoons black pepper Okay, in a pressure cooker put turkey (pork tenderloin is an acceptable substitute) broth and all the spices. cook on high pressure for 45 minutes dice veggies like onions and zucchini and open cans, drain all but the lo mein veggies (drain and save for later), while this is cooking you might want to cook a spaghetti squash, cut in half width wise, put in oven safe pan and put in over, then turn on, no need to preheat, to 460 degrees and back for 50 minutes, remove seeds after, it is easy, and don't add water, that destroys the texture and taste. Simply shred with a fork, flesh will come out like angel hair. Store in refrigerator for 5 days, reheats great in microwave. basically calorie free. okay, remove turkey to a plate to cool, slice into smaller pieces it will cool faster. Get cinnamon stick out and throw away. Add gravy packets to juice, and bring to a boil, as you stir, won't take long, then add zucchini, first, then all the rest of veggies, put lid on to just cover, and turn heat off for 10 minutes, everything will be a perfect doneness.as you are doing this tear turkey into shreds with fingers or 2 forks, you might need to allow it to cool a bit more. If so, turn rest of dish back on low, or simmer. mix in shredded turkey in Now if it is too thick for your liking add the lo mein juice to thin as you like. If you will be serving to your family over rice, they wil probably like about half the can added. I personally like a thick dish, but depending on your stage, adding the whole can of juice still makes a nice beyond thick Soup. Enjoy over spaghetti squash, or straight. I do not know the actual calories, but they are very low, I would say less than 80 for 3 oz. Almost zero carbs, and lots of protein from the turkey. The cinnamon and ginger really make this special. I prefer it to restaurant dishes.
  24. Found out today that surgery will have to be in January and not December , I know its only a few weeks difference but still.
  25. You don't mention what you are doing. Are you: Tracking your food?Consuming all of your Protein and fluids (at least 64 oz) every day? What is your protein target? Avoiding starches, added sugars, and fried foods? Practicing mindful eating? Taking your Vitamins and supplements as instructed? Since your injury have you looked for other forms of exercise? Have you talked to your NUT about your challenges and goals? If so, what does he or she advise? What does your surgeon say? Without more information it is hard to offer specific suggestions. You may be eating too much or may not be eating enough. Either of those can cause slower weight loss. Embrace the Stall http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/351046-Embrace-the-Stall
