Just wanted to thank everyone for this site! I'm two weeks (yesterday!) post op and this community has been such a help. From reading others struggles, issues and successes to being able to ask questions and everything in between---I love it. For example---for the first time since sleeved, today I'm feeling hunger about two hours after eating. Of course the "oh my gosh the surgery didn't work" brain kicks in. I just did a search for "hungry" and found a few threads where others ha dealt with this at various stages. My fears were calmed. Sometimes we know something intellectually, however in the heat of the moment, when left to out own devices we convince ourselves that something is abnormal. It could be that many of (pre-sleeve) us are used to be the exception to the rule. Always the hungriest. Always the biggest. Always feeling like a failure. That's all. Thank you to everyone who encourages, shares, gives the hard to hear info and all who are in this community!

Pre-Op Weight Gain
simply.torri replied to scaredoftheunknown's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
goodluck, i think you are on the right track. I would probably focus on the liquid diet (the shakes and small salad like you mentioned) and not the exercise, because exercise will make you build muscle, and muscle will show up on the scale! Last time I did a liquid diet i lost 11lbs the first week so hopefully you will have the same result! ! -
Overeating since im gonna have surgery
oldoneyoungagain replied to Smilejoelle1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pretty much gave up all the good things that you all have mentioned. Diet Pepsi was my go to drink, but think I replaced it with more coffee, which has since turned out not to have been a good choice. But all this was three years ago when I was banded. Now I'm basically in the same boat. No band, nothing stopping me from eating what I want, when I want, etc. until I have bypass in about three months. I don't have will power, never have that is why I needed a tool to control my weight, but I'm pretty darn stubborn. So since I did lose weight with the band, I'll be darn if I put on any weight just to have to take it off again, so I still have to look and smell but don't dare touch. So please eat for me too, I miss Chunky Monkey, Java Chip my two favorite ice creams, any donuts, cream puffs, peach cobbler, German Chocolate cake, pizza, and yes the cheddar biscuits, and my list goes on, and on. Lol -

Start a Journal! Although I have been lax about it lately as i have been really busy. For weeks before my surgery up to about a month after i wrote everything in a journal. It helped me express my feelings, worries and successes through each day both pre op and post op. I also have a weight loss thermometer next to my desk on the wall, where every Monday i come to work and update it from the week before.. ( in different pretty colors LOL). It has really helped me see where i was to where i am going. ALso the before and after pics are great idea!

I may fall here - depends on insurance approval. Shooting for late November/early December. Feel like I’m in the very beginnjng. On week 2 of my supervised diet. It’s been hard. Next week will be much harder as I “flip” to protein drinks only for a week then “flip” back again for 2 weeks for protein, low-fat, low-carb.

Post op weight gain
PAstudent replied to 3boysmama's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm in the same boat as you! And 3 weeks post op to the day and weigh 2 pounds more than I did a few days ago. We have to remember that gains at this stage are most likely hormonal/water weight. It's highly unlikely that we're consuming enough calories to gain fat (1 pound of fat=3500 Calories). If you're easily anxious like me and also following a low carb diet, you could choose to buy some ketone strips. A bottle of them is inexpensive. You just pee on one and it'll tell you if your body is releasing ketones or not (ketones are one sign that your body has turned to burning fat for energy) Good luck! Sent from my SM-G935V using BariatricPal mobile app -
Everyone is shocked when the scale first jumps up by a pound or three. It's a normal part of the weight loss adventure. It is not fat weight. And there is nothing you have done wrong or could do to prevent it. Watching the scale for me is like watching the ball in a basketball game (except each basket scored is a pound lost)... there is a lot more dribbling and passing that occurs than successful baskets! (And that breathless pause as the ball circles the rim is spot on too!)

To answer a few questions: I did the 3 month option. I met with a nutritionist that works in my surgeon's office. We did a lot through email. I did weigh in with them when I had an appt. (My surgeon's office employs the dietician and a psychologist for the psych eval.) Aetna required that I submit 2 year weight history...which I didn't even have a PCP sent everything from my OBGYN as I've had 3 babies in the last 5 years. My surgeon required a cardiac clearance which I had to have an echo for and a stress test. Surgeon also required pulmonary clearance and of course I had to have a sleep study for that. Surgeon required a letter from my PCP and a scope. I managed to have all the tests finished in about a month...it was busy though. They submitted to Aetna and it took about 2 weeks which I was told is fab b/c it's the end of the year and of course we ran into Thanksgiving. I thought this process would be much harder...I still can't believe it was so easy. So now I have my team meeting on 12/9 with preadmission testing and surgery the 28th! I still am in shock that it is really going to happen but I can't WAIT!

September 2013 Surgeries
SueC1 replied to shershrinking's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think it depends on your insurance and what they require before you can have the surgery. I started the process in February and had to have 6 mos of supervised diet. That was up in July. I was hoping to get surgery date in August, but my surgeon is on vacation through second week into August, then he is booked. I am on the bump list though if someone should cancel. I really wanted it in August as my surgery date is the same date my kindergartener goes off to a new school. I'm already a bit emotional about that now and I know it will get worse as time goes on. My husband thinks I'm crazy to be so upset about it this and that I should just be happy I'm starting a new phase in life and I should be happy about that. He just don't get the bond that a mom has with her child is and being the last one to go off to a big school doesn't help! Anyways, I hope u get a surgery date soon. Good luck! -
I had them two times...the night of my surgery and the day after. They LASTED forever and hurt...and made me feel like crap. Made me feel so bad that I just loaded up on pain meds and knocked myself out. I think mine was a combination of gas and irritation to the diaphragm from surgery. If you are getting them two weeks out, it makes me think it has to do with the speed of drinking -- or -- drinking too much at one time

Surgery Cancelled due to RX Diet pills!!
Brandy~ replied to LynneB's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I called my surgeons office just this morning to ask if the meds I am on are OK. They told me not to worry about it and talk to the anestiologist next week at my pre op :frown: No diet pills for me tho. -
Okay I'm officially 8 weeks now since surgery and I'm curious if anybody else has had problems we feeling nauseous at about 7 or 8 weeks I can't seem to keep stuff down my stomach is tearing me up inside and I'm not sure what's going on I've made an appointment with the doctor but I'm curious if anybody else has experienced something similar to this I make sure I get my proteins but it always seems to hit me late at night or I feel nauseous and I am throwing up usually every other night 2-3 times a week just curious if that seems to be a problem for anybody

To me the answer was clear: B. I had a treadmill and used it for a couple of weeks, but it just got so incredibly boring I couldn't handle it. I'm just glad it was a freebie and not something I bought! If it has to be one or the other, go for the fitness membership. Variety is the spice of life, and ABSOLUTELY the spice of exercise. Both would be great and give you the best of both worlds.

When I was having this same dilema, I decided to rent the exercise equiptment (a bike in my case) for a couple of months to see how often I'd use it. It was in the lounge room 2 weeks before I was sick to death of seeing it lol. But that's just me .. it really is a personal decision. We also have a treadmill that lives in the garage. I've paid it a visit a couple of times recently with my ipod and enjoyed it.

Hey Nicolle, I will be going pretty regularly to the meetings. We'll probably bump into one another. He is a really nice guys. His staff is wonderful and his wife is a doll! I am extremely happy with them all. For me, the delay has been the time of year I decided to look into things. Because of the school year (teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria workers etc) all schedule there procedures over the summer - even if they started with Dr. Ahmad in January. I am completely done with everything that is required except the upper endoscopy and losing the 10 pounds (I've lost 5). I should have insurance approval this coming week. However, I'm looking at mid-Sept. for the procedure. I could get in first week of September, but I work at a university and need to get past the first two weeks of the semester when it is craziest before I take a week or so off... I hope that helps. Keep in touch.

Diabetes and Lap Band Surgery
PackersFan replied to Karon's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Karon, I had type 2 diabetes. When I asked my primary doctor what I should do about my diabetic meds before and after surgery - she told me that I should stop my pills as soon as I start my one-week pre-surgical clear liquid diet and to just monitor my blood sugar closely. At the time she said "If your sugar starts to go back up when you are eating regularly, we'll figure out your new dosage. And who knows, if you're lucky maybe you won't have to go back on any medications" which seemed like a complete fantasy to me. But my sugar levels stayed low the whole time immediatley before and after surgery - and it never went high again! It was the craziest thing. When I was first diagnosed, before I started taking metformin, my blood sugar was too high for my monitor to register (meaning it was over 600!) But now it's normal. (And so is my blood pressure). But - obviously everyone is different, and you should most definitely follow your own doctor's orders. I just wanted to share my own little miracle. -
My husband works out of state 48 of the 52 weeks a year. We normally try and plan things like this. But this all happened so fast, that he'd already had his schedule / flights/ ...... booked 3 weeks out. I told him to go on and go b/c I had a girlfriend that was taking the day off to come be with me. Well.......I just found out that she will be leaving shortly before noon to go take her son to Sophmore orientation. They won't even take me back until 10:30 ish.... So I won't even be out of surgery before she leaves!!! this was one of the main reasons for her being there, so someone would be with me during surgery and then they could call my hubby with the report afterwards. I am so bummed. Our oldest daughter lives an hour away and has our 16 mo GS, so a hosptial for hours is no place for her/him to be. Our youngest daughter is 23 & still lives at home b/c she has multiple health probelms. She isn't even staying at home alone while I am in the hosptial and until hubby get home Friday afternoon, she is going over to a friends house. I am at a loss as to what to do. Suggestions?

I had my surgery on October 18th 2012. Before my surgery I had lapband, It did not work I actually gained weight so I had it removed in August. When my Doctor performed my surgery he started out doing it Laproscopic, However he couldn't see so he had to go in zipper style, so they said it was as though I had 2 surgerys in one. After my surgery I stayed in ICU for 3 days, when I was moved to a room I was doing pretty well untill my white blood count was low, and they fixed that, gave me incilin every day although i'm not diabetic, (that was torture) next someone on my floor had the infection C-Diff, and then I got it. I was in isolation for 2 weeks in the hospital it was horrible, I then had to get 2 blood transfusions, and I finally began feeling better, the infection subsided and I went home. After a few days of being home the infection started back up the diahhrea was unbearable, I got dehydrated, and had to return to the hospital where they gave me horrible antibiotics in liquid form, which was hard to tolerate, and they gave me an IV to rehydrate me. After being back in the hospital for 1 day I took the antibiotics for 10 days and began to feel better. Since then I have had a very hard time eating just too weak to do anything, but now I've got my energy back and I am doing so much better. I had a horrible experience, long hospital stay 2 1/2 weeks, but hopefully the outcome will make up for it. Its been a long painful journey but i'm getting there! Now I am on the restricted solid diet and I still only eat applesauce, and pudding, I hate it!!! I tried to eat a little chili my husband brought home because he thought I was starving BIG MISTAKE!!! I now know It gave me what is called the "dumping syndrome", now i'm afraid to try any solid foods or anything else for that matter......
