  1. Just got back in town again and saw this post. My surgery is also on May 8th. Hope all works out for you and your family to help that day. I started my 2 week liguid diet today in preparation for May 8th.
  2. I've been scheduled for May 9th for weeks. The surgical coordinator called me today and said that my Doctor is receiving some stupid award in California on the 9th and can't do it then. Now, I'll either be the 8th or the 16th. I'll know whenever she calls me back. He doesn't usually do lap bands on Thursdays (the 8th) but she is going to ask him. This all ticks me off because my fiance, mom and dad have all already arranged to have work off on the 9th. So irritating. I'll let the boards know when I find out my new date.
  3. So, I am 29 years old, at 250lbs now with a height of 5ft 8in. My weight has been an issue since 2000. My BMI has yet to reach 40, but it has been over 35 since 2000. I am slowly getting more tired, back pains, ankles pains. MY blood pressure and cholesterol, thankfully, have always been good. My family on both sides have a strong history of heart disease, and high blood pressure. I have GREAT insurance with UHC Choice thru Boys Town. I have worked here for nearly 5 yrs, and have had to pay the most of $250 ever for anything. I go for the seminar on MArch 11th. I am trying to be optomistic about getting approved, but I fear I will not. I am a person who never goes to the doctor because I hate it. So, I have minimal dr records. I am hoping someone will have a story similiar to mine, and be able to tell me that I will get approved! Weight loss never works for me, in fact I have been working out 3 days a week since June and have gained 18lbs. Weight is taking over my life, and isolating me from the world. Please, someone give me hope that the lap band will work for me, and that I will get approved!

    Surgery tomorrow Aug 30th...

I remember my situation, it was difficult for me to sleep, I was so anxious. However, I wish I knew then what I know now regarding surgeries and hair loss - I would have taken more Protein at least three weeks prior to surgery to avoid hair loss. Sorry, a moment of aberration -- Try to sleep early to speed up the process...lol. Everything will be okay. Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmmm...I need him at the moment..lol If he doesn't give me the go ahead after this next test, it is going to get ugly and fast! I have an appt with my surgeon and the last appt with my NUT on 10/2 and then I'm to be scheduled for surgery shortly thereafter. So, he has one week to get her done..or it's going to be WWIII!

    Worried Mom.

WebMD has some very useful and medically accurate information about all 3 surgeries. They have slide shows and have statistics that talk about the benefits and risks. I think there might be some animated slideshows in it, too.

    Help a Noob out...Please?

Everyone's experience is different. I have seen some need a full six weeks off of work. I have a desk job and took one week. That was perfect for me! I was shopping on day four (though hubby pushed the cart) and back to walking when I returned to work on day seven. I have a three year old and go to school full time as well. Long recovery - ain't got no time for that! Lol! I'm nine mos post op now. 110, about 40 to go.

    Help a Noob out...Please?

Hi PD, Post op for the first few days I was in the hospital. Likely you will need to find someone to care for your children during this time. I was quite weak too due to the lack of food and nutrients I was getting though it wasn't dibilitating. I was back to work in about 3 weeks for what I recall. You should ask every single question that comes to your mind. Keep a note pad with you, so you won't forget any. Write them down as soon as you can. Our brains can zoom a mile a minute during the pre-op phase with so much data and information! It will be easy to forget what you wanted to ask. As far as coffee, wean off it slowly. It took me an entire month to function without it. Going all at once you will find yourself miserably and all headache-y. No reason to put yourself through any extra misery when it can be prevented. One last thing you should know: This is NOT the easy way out. Your life is not going to miraculously become better post-op or once you reach your goal. You will have to work really hard to get to goal and you will have to work even harder to stay there. That said, I do not regret getting my surgery! It has saved me from gaining all my weight back and more like the old days. But I can eat a lot of bad foods if I don't watch myself. I can't eat too much of the good stuff though. So food choices will be super important. Good luck! If you ever need any questions asked, I'm around.
  17. I did not know till the last minute if my surgery was going to happen. It is scheduled for Sept. 9th. I am so exhausted today. Because of an abnormal EKG, slightly bradycardia, and the fact I am over sixty, just last week my PCP ordered an echocardigram and a stress test. The echo was performed last week. The stress test was performed yesterday with a rush on it. My doctor received the test this morning. The WLS office did not receive the results although the doctor faxed it. Also the PCP did not have the sign off sheet from the WLS's office that I KNOW I gave to them. A doctor has to sign a legal piece of paper stating it is OK for surgery to be performed, and this is the paperwork I KNOW the doctor's office had. One hand did not know what the other was doing. I asked the WLS office to fax that piece of paper to the doctor's office and stated I would pick up all the paperwork in person including the results of the stress test, the already faxed echo results. . I then ran to the WLS office for my last pre-op appointment. Why can't some offices get their stuff together? Anyway, it is all over, the last appoint with the WLS is over and the surgery is a go. I am way way way too tired to stress out over the surgery. One last thing. The WLS surgeon is awesome. I know 2 people who had the VSG with her within the last week. HOWEVER, the first patient was scheduled for 8a.m.; the hospital and the doctor got their messages crossed and the surgery did not happen till 3p.m. The other patient's surgery was scheduled for 3p.m.; the doctor was backed up and her surgery was not performed till 1am the next morning. Always hurry up and wait. But she is an excellent surgeon.
  18. I had to be at a BMI of 40+ for 5+ years. I didn't meet the requirements. I went through the whole internal appeal and made it to an external appeal and ended up paying for the surgery. I have a self funded plan and asked my employer for an exception. Was told no. My coordinator said my plan was one of the least accommodating she ever worked with. I was so stressed I got shingles on my face and ended up delaying my surgery by three weeks. But I read a lot of people on here who had great success with the UHC appeals. My plan sucked butt.
  19. I have a 3 year old who is non verbal with autism. I plan on having my husband bring him in to see me.

    Young Children Visiting Post-Surgery

I think about this, too, and I don't even have a surgery date lol. I am just weird about hospitals... I wouldn't want my 3 y/o (will be 4 by the time I have surgery I'm sure) to catch something while visiting me. But then again, I haven't been one night away from her... EVER... so I know I will miss her. She is very attached to me so I hope she handles it well...

    Use It To Lose It

So I'm six years post op, 250 lbs down, 61 years old and in the best shape of my adult life. I'm at the gym 5-7 days a week. I swim laps 4 days, do cardio and weights 2 days and on the 7th day I either bicycle or walk on the beach. When I started my journey I was 424 lbs and exercise for me was getting out of bed in the morning. I just did a blog post about how I got started exercising - you can read it if you like at Use It To Lose It! and realized that I really didn't know how to get started exercising and there may be many more like me out there. I thought I could use this forum for all of us who currently have some sort of exercise regimen to let those who don't, or those who want to, or those who are interested, or those who may want to change it up know what they are doing and how they got started so- How do you get your exercise? When did you start? (how soon after banding) How did you start? I started by just walking around more in stores, etc. Then I took up swimming laps, starting at 300 lbs and swimming for 5 minutes 3 x per week, working it up to 1 hour per day. How about you? __________________

    Use It To Lose It

Hi Sandi, I had been working with a personal trainer for about 2 years before my surgery (I'm 4 years post-op) but we couldn't do much cardio because of so much weight on my knees. Still, I had good muscle tone under all the weight and I think that helped both my surgical recovery as well as my ultimate weight loss. I didn't exercise much -- maybe a couple of walks a week - for the first 100 lbs, which poured off me in about 5 monhts (I'm only 5'1 and my body was dying to shed some weight once I was eating proper quantities with the band). Then I started walking longer lengths (maybe 3 miles) about 4 times a week. When I got to 200 lbs, I started running small spurts within my walks and got really excited about having a tummy tuck (I'd been told I could have one at 180), so I started running more and walking less, probably working out 5 times a week. Once I recovered from my tummy tuck, I trained for the NYC marathon back in 2007, which took me below my goal weight! I've had some health problems unrelated to the band (a miscarriage) this year and have gained about 25 lbs. My band is perfectly adjusted, but now that I'm out of the depression that goes along with that experience (I'm 37 and have no children), I've signed up for the NYC marathon again and I know I'll be back to goal weight in no time. I'm so thankful for my band. Without it, I know I would have gained 100+ lbs while I wasn't "minding the store." I'm so glad I have this adjustable tool and a body that craves exercise and responds to it. Thanks for the question. It feels good to own up to what's going on with me. It's been a while since I've checked in with LBT and it's a valuable support tool. Take care, JulieNYC

    Bras...

I went from a 44DDD TO A 40DD. I still can fit my 44 DDD on the sides it supports the under arm flubber but the cups are sad, but not a real big issue. You will probably be ready to downsize in 2-3 months so just be prepared I have not resorted to the unibra as of yet I just bought 2 because I had 2 that were too tight before and now they fit perfect. I found some inexpensive Bras at wally world $10 so worse case scenario while you are in transition buy a cheap one or two. Don't be in to much of a hurry to find the right size cause you are still losing and you may lose it faster or slower but you are not at goal and don't want to get to comfortable in these temporary sizes.
