Question about diet for both surgeries
Italia904 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
After 3 months of bypass what is a sample of a 24 hour meals routine with water? And same with sleeve? -
So when you slip up and eat too fast does your mind quickly remind you to slow down? Do you have diarrhea with the sleeve and the bypass?

Is it possible to lose too much?
zackly replied to LoseItKacy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm six week post op (bypass) and had the same concern about losing weight too fast. I went from a 1-2# daily loss to 2-3# weekly loss currently. I've gone from daily weigh ins to weekly weigh ins. I'm no medical professional but I was told that if my urine was light colored I was probably getting enough fluids. To reach my Protein goal of 70 grams daily, I still have 2-3 shakes before I have any other real food. -
Honestly, tell me the truth. NO more Booze or caffinee?
Jewelgirl04 replied to Michelle Tarver's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm about a week short of five months now and down 61 pounds. I figured I'd go item by item below. Coffee - I just graduated law school and am studying for the bar exam. I cannot go without coffee at the moment. That being said, I can't drink a full cup at one sitting. I make myself coffee in a teacup and that's about as much as my stomach can handle in terms of capacity. If you need the caffeine like I do, you'll find that it's absorbed into your bloodstream much quicker than before because of the size of your stomach. It's actually a pretty nifty upside. That being said, it'll probably take you about two months to be able to drink it again post-op because it's an acidic drink and your stomach will still be healing. Don't worry though. Caffeine isn't an issue in the long term. Soda/Carbonated drinks - Big NO. Not only will the carbonation agitate your stomach, but it will stretch your pouch (whether sleeve or bypass) and undo the operation as a result overtime. Not worth it. On the plus side, when I've dared to take a sip because I gave into stupid temptation, I've found soda is way too sweet for me now. So it might not be as big of a challenge. Don't worry, though. Diet iced tea and lemonade is your friend! Alcohol - I only recently tried alcohol for the first time since my surgery because white sangria was being served at my graduation party. I was a little over four months post-op then. I only drank about half of a standard wine glass. One of the major concerns concerning alcohol (aside from its high sugar content) is that alcohol (like caffeine) is absorbed into your blood stream far quicker after the procedure. Mixed drinks with something to temper the alcohol with is preferable. Light beer is also okay. Stay away from straight up liquor. Some have found red wine to agitate the stomach more than anything else. Go easy and work yourself up to the wine with mixed drinks/coolers first to gauge your body's reaction and give it some time. As an occasional wine drinker, it shouldn't be a problem. Hope this all helps, @@Michelle Tarver! -
I never realized or read how hard the first few days were going to be. The gas hurts, it hurts to walk. I can't stand straight up. I'm running a low grade fever, they said to increase my fluids which I have been. I'm not having any trouble getting my protein or clear fluids down. It's just the constant pain in my abdomen! How long does it last?

After gastric bypass surgery, some people experience dumping syndrome. If you ever experience dumping syndrome it is not something that you wish to experience again. So you learn to avoid it in the future. Sometimes dumping syndrome occurs when one eats too much. You body generally tells you just before you reach that point. It has pre-triggers. These can be hiccups, sneezes, excess mucus, runny nose, an instantaneous change in the taste of food. Many people's pre-triggers are different. In your case, 8 days post-op seems way too soon for this to be the problem.

Chickened Out On Surgery Day. Help.
Frustr8 replied to xandriuh's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
We do get occasional cases on here, I suspect, they are only the Icebergs tip. To a man they all say" I'm sorry I backed out the first attempt, it did give me an opportunity to know and except myself. better.than I am so glad in had it done! Wish,it had been sooner!" the majority seem to be VSG but Bypassers are also represented. I am also a Panic Attack, person, but something, odd, ihavent had more than 1 tiny since,my surgery last September, eitber,i was am more happy and satisfied with myself or it actually had a role in making,it and depressive moments to go away!👈😝👉 -
Worried I don't/Won't have restiction
Bndtoslv replied to Bndtoslv's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you! I guess I just worry because I am a revision patient and this feels so different from the band. With the band I wasn't able to drink well for weeks after surgery. This time I was drinking well within a few days. I know that it doesn't mean I don't have restriction - just you know... -
Worried I don't/Won't have restiction
hockeyfan7 replied to Bndtoslv's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a revision patient in my 7th week. I can eat 4-5 oz of Protein but if I eat it first like we're supposed to, I'm done. I won't be eating the veggies. I try to stick to 3-4 oz of protein and some veggies at each meal so I can get some veggies. I don't think it's nutritionally sound to just eat meat all the time with nothing else. -
Welcome to the forums. Don't think of whatever you do until you get your revision as a diet. You and I know that diets don't work. Think of it as your new eating plan that you will do for the rest of your life. Your band restricted portion size. Presumably you also had an eating plan to go with the smaller portion size. Return to the plan and return to portion size as best you can. Your plan was supposed to be for the rest of your life so get back on board. Your insurance is as likely to pay for your revision as it would if you never had surgery in the first place. Do the best you can. If you give up on your plan until you have surgery, well, then you very well may gain your weight back. Good luck, Tek

Acid reflux - Doc rec getting bypass?
mizzzliza replied to Nene16's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doc said about 50% of sleevers will have worse reflux after surgery and tried to talk me into bypass because I currently take Pepcid. I told him I believe weight loss in itself will help my heartburn (and it has) and I'm willing to risk it because I really don't want bypass. My endoscopy showed no Barrett's esophagus or any other damage from reflux so I'm comfortable in my choice. Do meds not work to control your symptoms after surgery? It seems a little drastic to me, to have additional wls just because of reflux. -
Seriously....this heart burn every single night
shelbys mom replied to katragina's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Im in a similar situation. I have not had surgery yet, as i will have my 2nd consult soon. I have gerd, have had it for years and when the surgeon and I discussed it he said, " well if you get reflux you always can convert to bypass". I was,a bit frustated with that comment and, I said, "No, at 58 years old im only doing this once". He said 1/3 of sleeve patients will still have gerd, and he has been seeing sleeve patients 3 to 4 years out with severe gerd and going the revision route because its very bad and happens daily. Thats why I decided the bypass route. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App -
Seriously....this heart burn every single night
stacyrg2 replied to katragina's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Severe heartburn is a recognized side effect of VSG. I was forced to revise to bypass to cure my heartburn. I would call your surgeon and see if they can put you on a different PPI. You may need to try different medication combinations to find one that gives you some relief. Also, try to drink something other than plain Water. Plain water gave me horrible heartburn. You need to drink because dehydration won't help you at all. In fact, it will make you feel worse. Good luck! -
What is happening?!? Dumping or Revolt?
MMME replied to cooper's mum's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was unable to tolerate whey protein as well. My fiance's ex wife (we're friends, oddly enough) had bypass 3 months before I did and she recommended Peptipro gelatin. I'm not sure if you can get it in Ohio, but I order it online here in Australia. It's not whey, but it's easier to digest for me. It dissolves completely in water and no gluggy feel like whey powders. -
Hello Everyone!!! Im 2 weeks away from surgery and all I've been hearing and reading is how gastric bypass is bad. I've heard that it makes u bald, you have long term complications, and that the surgery takes years off your life just the same as being overweight. My mind a mess. I've been so stressed since I've got my surgery date. Really thinking about not going through with the surgery. I don't know what to do. :-(

I had a sleeve done about 10 years ago when I was 40. I went from about 280 to 160 and have put the weight back on. I have seen two surgeons in my area in the last couple of months. One does DS and says I am kinda halfway through a DS procedure. The other surgeon does not do DS so she is recommending bypass. If I really want, she can refer me to a surgeon in the hospital system who does DS but that is 3 hours away. I've had some friends use the DS surgeon and recommend her but her office staff is a hot mess. An overall lack of organization and I send info to the person I am told to but then someone else calls and says I wasn't supposed to send to that person. The by pass surgeon is in my hospital system and therefore has access to all my doctor's records since nearly every one of my doctors is in that hospital system. By pass doctor said that DS wasn't fully "approved" (my word not hers) and is still considered experimental but she wants to learn how to do it and expects it will be much more common in the near future. My husband is asking me what will I do differently after this surgery that I didn't do before. Great question. I am moving through all the insurance required hoops for both doctors at this point but still not sure I want to do either. Anyone have any words of wisdom? Not sure how to proceed. Thanks so much!
-
I had the bypass done almost 6 months ago and it's been working for me I'm not sure what the ds is like I haven't talked to anyone who had it I did do some research on both I hand never really considered the sleeve. Honestly I would choose the one closest to you and in your network for the record aspect and if you need your surgeon for something they are close and access to your info Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app

Sleeve to Bypass Revision
SleeveandRNYchica replied to chasingpolaris321's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I can understand you concern with the Barrett's Esophagus. I was worried that I would have damage as well. I hope you can come to a quick solution. I am currently working on meeting all the insurance requirements. My best guess is that I will have surgery in late Sept, early October. I actually lived abroad for my first surgery. My surgery team was great. Follow-up care great. For me, I think bypass would have been the best option initially. Are you nervous about having the bypass? There are several posts about people revising due to GERD and/or Barrett's. What insurance due u have? -
Possibility of geting Band removed w/a Revision
momof2boys replied to bartoe's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi Just found out today my band has to come out and we are looking at a revision. My surgeon wants me to do a rny due to my complications with ulcers, gastritis, etc. I gained 20lbs since they let everything out of it 4 months ago and have to have another endoscopy to ensure my ulcers have healed. I am seriously considering the revision and not just a removal because I know I will gain the weight back. How are you coming with your decision? -
May surgery peeps from lapband to bypass?
EmergingMissP replied to tebowfan's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
@@jodie1961 yes, my surgeon was able to complete the surgery in one operation. My surgery lasted longer than normal due to a lot of scar tissue from the band(the most he had ever seen) which was apparently what was causing me to have issues all along. My pain has subsided however its still there but the doctor mentioned that this was due to the trauma my body had gone through with the Lap Band removal & RNY in one process. Today I am feeling great and have no regrets on this revision surgery wishing you the best next Tuesday good luck. -

EmergingMissP were they able to do the lap band removal and the bypass in the same surgery? I see you are having some pain, hopefully it will subside soon. Just wondering, my surgeon is going to try to do both at the same time next Tuesday. Get well soon. -

What was the cause of your SLIPPAGE?
Frnd4LIfe replied to Jul's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello - I have had my band for over 5 1/2 years. After about 18 mths my band slipped. I think it was from Throwing up. (not confirmed by My Dr) but I know my body and I was getting sick alot when I ate. But I was willing to go thru this to loose the weight. Bad idea. My Dr took some of the fluid out to see if the pouch would reduce/ the swelling to go down on its own. ( it didnt) One thing that can happen when the band slips is your pouch becomes enlarged, and in my case even part of the old stomach made its way up thru the band, thererfore creating a new pouch from my old stomach. So now I had 2 smal pouches, not a good thing, I was able to hold more food, explaining the reason I was not loosing any weight. So I had surgery to replace the band. Well, just a month ago same thing, but this time I have not been throwing up. However I noticed I was and could eat more then I normmaly use to which also explained some weight gain, I thought maybe I need a fill, I went to the Dr and Bam enlarged pouch, then 2 weeks later band slippage. My band now has to be removed for a 2nd time. Things to learn from my post: You must always remember your band is a "TOOL" never take it for granted. If something doesnt feel right it probably isnt. Check it out...Use common sense, most of the time your Dr. does want what is best for you, seek their advice or call the nurse, they are very knowledgable and have probably heard your worry from many others. Do not over-eat and you should not be throwing-up more then the occasional burp-up. Stay in a support group. Band slippage most of the time can be prevented, sometimes not. For me personally I think the first time might have been preventable, I use to beat myself up over it but now that I have had a 2nd slip, I am not so sure, I didnt throw up. Sometimes it just happens....I will be having a revision surgery this July..not another band, not becuase I do not have faith in the band - I do - it took me down 85 lbs, but My Dr says its time for something else. I will either have the Sleeve or the RYN...5 years ago the RYN was a dirty word to me, now I am prepared, it too is still a tool and I am sure it will get me to goal. Would I do it all over again, YOU BETCHA. Love your band!!
