Hi All, I was banded on July 9 and lost 25 pounds by my first post op appointment on Aug. 9. At that time my doc said he didn't want to do a fill because I was doing so well without it. Well I thought I would up the stakes and I started working out 5 days a week. I work three days with a personal trainer and two days I do Water aerobics. So since my doc appointment I haven't lost any weight at all. I've been tracking my calories and it seems I average about 1300 a day. Is that too much? Also, I can drink about 60 oz of water a day right now but I'm concerned that might not be enough either. Tomorrow I start school and I take glassblowing glasses so with our 90+ degree weather and the heat from the class I'm really worried about not getting in enough water. Before my surgery I would drink at least 72 oz of water in 4 hours during class because I would guzzle down a bottle at time. With the sip, sip, sip method I'm worried. Any suggestions? Thanks for the info and thanks to my exercise buddy Val for telling me about this website. Great info!

Hello Everyone For years I have been strugling with my weight, I have tried every diet and pillS known to menkind,so when i heard about the lapband i was exited I reseached it and made the desicion to have it done. I had my procedure on january 20th 2009. at first everything was great not too much pain and the weight started to come off, then i just stop loosing weight i called my Dr. and was schedule fo a fill, I had my first fill on april 24,2009 and i was so excited that i was going to start loosing weight but it just not happening I don't know why, I'm watching what I eat and I'm exersing not as much as I should but Im trying. When I read the success stories of some of the member makes me feel like a looser, like im not trying hard enough, I feel like I let my self and my family down  Im questioning my decision on having the procedure done. Can it be possible that the Procedure work for some people and not on others?

If I am reading correctly, you had the surgery in January and your first fill in April. Is that correct? I ask because what you are going through is normal. Most people don't feel restriction on the first fill. It takes a few fills before restriction which leads to weight loss. From what I understand, once you get to your sweet spot the weightloss is a little faster. It's easy to get discouraged, but you have to keep your head up and keep on trying. It will be a struggle, but it's worth it to get to a healthier you. Good Luck Cheryl

Post First fill Hunger
illuminationlady replied to galicianer's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would say that you are at your sweet spot or close to it. However, some people choose to have their bands a little tight. I do not and weight loss is slow for me. I'm okay with that. But I'm hardly ever hungry any more, which is Heaven! My doctor said that sometimes that "hungry switch" just all of a sudden gets turned off. And mine is off! So, I say it's a personal decision that you must make after you read the responses here on this forum. Oh and by the way it took me 5 fills before that "hungry switch" got turned off. Best wishes!!! -

qtney1 commented on nancy_marie_00's blog entry in Blog 100512
I had surgery 27 days ago. After losing 23 pounds during preop, I have gained 5 pounds back after starting solid foods. And, it has just held steady at that 5 pounds in the past couple of weeks. Don't worry...we are in bandster hell (oh, yes, I am starting to feel it). Fills are just around the corner! -

Hi everyone! My name is Stacy and Mrs Sabre told me about this site. I used to own a few support sites with yahoogroups so I may even know a few of you I was banded in 2001 by Dr Ponce in Dalton, GA. I live here in Charlotte NC. I have lost 100lbs, had one port disconnect and a few months of being filled too tight, but other than that, I have been problem free. I hear there is a local support group that gets together once in a while? I would love to get to know some of you and offer any support that I can Hope to talk with you all some more soon! (I have also had a few plastic surgeries as a result of the weight loss if anyone wants info on that as well) Stacy

First thing to keep in mind is that weight does not equal fat. Unless you're going WAY WAY WAY overboard (which you probably even can't) you did not gain 4 pounds of fat overnight. Just between morning and evening, the body can easily fluctuate as much as 8 - 10 lbs, and more or less, by adjusting its own Fluid reserves. I've fluctuated as much as 15 lbs in one day. Are you female? If so, perhaps you've started retaining Water. If not, perhaps you've started retaining water anyway. Lots of things can impact water retention: environmental temperature and humidity, high sodium meals, physical activity, and on, and on... Things will reach an equilibrium and take care of themselves. When you are retaining fluids for whatever reason, they tend to come off just as quickly as they came on, though they may stick around for a few days.

Let me tell you what happend to me. I was down to 237 per my scale. Happy as a clam. I then weighed in again one morning and I was up to 245. Needless to say I marched my ass right into the doctors office to weigh. My home scale was off! I had gained 5 lbs. I have been struggling ever since to take that weight off. I would try and weigh at the doctor's office if you can. Scales are the devil!

I weigh every day. That way I can keep track because I never want to gain my weight back again. I have this happen all the time. Make sure you are wearing the same thing to weigh each time. Some clothes weigh more then others. I know if I have a lot of salty things the day before it really shows on the scale. It will probably be gone wothin the next couple of days. It is frustrating though. But it looks like you are doing good. Keep up the good work.

Thanks so much for all your words of support. I hope you are all right, it's Water weight or I'm retaining or something. I guess I just live in fear that my body will suddenly outsmart the band and I'll quit losing weight or even worse- gain it all back. And thanks to your advice, I put the scale away for awhile so hopefully when I come back to it I'll be back down. tHANKs a TON!!!

You should see them come off pretty quick. I weigh everyday and somtimes I can see a 3 or 4 lb swing. I think it is Water weight more than anything and you body is adjusting to something. Chris

What FINALLY made you decide to get banded??
Bjornsyouruncle replied to Mrs_Mauricio's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
In December of 2007 I graduated from college and spent 2 months trying to find a job. I spent way too much time at home and regained 40 pounds I'd worked the past year losing. I felt soooo frumpy. I felt like my weight was masking my real personality. And, I forget how I came across it, I was looking at this blog online and this woman had monthly pictures posted following having a band put in. I think she'd had it 6 or 8 months and you could really tell a difference. I'd been thinking about surgery for a couple years now, but seeing her success was the thing that actually inspired me to make the phone call and start the process. -

Banded 5/2 And Gaining Weight!
Ric replied to Kami172000's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It certainly is discouraging although I didn't have that problem. I have seen several others post the same thing. I was on Liquids for 2 weeks after and then mushy food for an additional 2 weeks and managed to lose another 20 lb during that time. Now after 10 months I find myself going to protein drinks if I gain a few "pounds" and it seems to work. Goodluck -
Hi Leener , There are bandsters who are vegetarians and do quite well. I dont think long term you have to stick to a low carb diet, but for folks with PCOS, it is generally advised that they do stick to one because typically they are insulin resistant as well. I am assuming that because you are obese that you have made the wrong food choices in the past or have a satiety disorder like the rest of us here? Which means making some changes are a good thing because even being a veggie means that you will have the band to help you with portion control. It will be harder for you to get your Protein, but protein can be found in low fat dairy, Beans, tofu, low fat cheese etc... You will not starve and the most important thing is that you wont be very hungry since the band is a restrictive device that will help you with your portion control. Now regarding complications, yes there are some. I have had a great experience with my band and no problems. I PB very very rarely (less than 10 times in 2.7 years) All ya need to do is chew chew chew. You might have to stay away from some of the fibrous veggies, since they can be stringy and cause you problems. No one knows which foods they will not be able to tolerate. It is trial and error. Regarding the Water, I can still drink water at a pretty rapid rate. I have been tight occasionally where I sound like a drain pipe when I drink too fast, but you should still be able to drink your water without a problem. Thicker drinks do go through more slowly and you will have to be careful to pace yourself. I still love food just as much as before. I now eat foods that I would have never considered before banding. I love veggies now and I especially love fish and wouldnt have touched a piece of tilapia pre banding. Now I eat fish several times a week, love making turkey/ veggie chili with zucchini and 5 different kinds of organic beans etc... You may have to supplement your diet with some Protein shakes or bars since you will need to keep your protein intake high if you want to lose weight. But at the end of the day, it boils down to calories in and calories expended. My advice is to be aware of the pitfalls, problems or complications of lapbanding, but dont become obsessed with the negative. Nothing is perfect and nothing is foolproof. It is a tool and you will get what you put into it. Dont worry dahlinggg...... Babs in TX 334/180 -150 ish

Will I heal? yes Will I become infected? no Will I get pneumonia? no Will it be freaky because there is a freaking device wrapped around my stomach? yes perhaps for a while then you'll get used to it then no. Will I become dehydrated? no Most of us can drink plenty of Water whenever we want. I love water and drink tons! And farther out: Will I pass out from PBing? Depends, I hardly ever PB Will I have terrible pain in my chest like some people? Perhaps, but pay close attention and you'll learn how not to do that and then no. Will I erode? extremely unlikely so no Will complications from erosion in my stomach kill me? I've never heard of that happening. Emotional: Will I enjoy life without my food? You'll learn to love the fact you can have what you want and stop eating before you're gorged. Will I ever be able to enjoy food again? Yes. I eat almost anything I want. You really can eat almost anything if you eat it slow enough. I choose to eat healthy most of the time because I didn't do this to eat cheeseburgers. What will life be like without being able to just drink and eat whenever and however like before? Thinner and healthier. You'll be able to drink anytime except right before and after eating. What will I do with my time without it being centered on eating and cooking? Center on cooking healthy meals that you enjoy. Center on making the foods you enjoy in a more healthful way. Made chicken chili tonight for the first time. YUM! What will I do with my thoughts and emotions that can't be comforted with food anymore?? That's a good one. I'm still working on that. I am finding myself struggling with frustration and slight depression and that's not me. Can't figure out if it's winter blues, PMS, the band thing or all three. I get over pretty quickly (usually when my hubby apologizes whether it's his fault or not.) :puke: I will learn to deal with stress in a different way. I'll have too. But you'll be amazed at how you will be able to deal with losing weight without being afraid of gaining it back. That's a pretty cool one. Good luck to you!!! Hope this helps!

I know what you mean Michelle about feeling emotional. I have kind of felt emotional since surgery. Maybe because I was trying to numb myself before surgery just to get through it (although I had my crying spurts the day before surgery). I really thought that I would have the buyers remorse right away; enough so that I warned my husband that I would be crying "why did I do this to myself??" to which I instructed him to calm me down and to not panic. I had none of that. I feel so blessed to have come through surgery without complications, to be healing nicely, and to be losing weight. I feel like a new person. I know reality will hit when I have to go back to work in a week and a half (damn hell hole), but for now I am flying high. We really are a blessed bunch of girls, ha? Thanks girls for all of your insight! You have really helped my on my journey. Holly

Hi All, I'm still doing research on the band - my doc appt is October 2006, but what happens 3-4 years later? How long doe sthe band stay with you? I have seen so many posts of people who have had the band taken off due to slippage, erosion, pain etc etc - does anyone know on average how long will the band remin in? Doe w eall have to plan a second surgery for removal in a few years? If life long - doe sthis mean all life - chew mushie food, eat extremely slowly and very small qty - once you have reached ideal weight, wontthe small tiny qty cause malnutrition? Lastly - when theband is out the scarring on the stomach - does that cause serious complications? How does one get aroudn these probelms?

Yes, It makes sense. Worried about losing and worried about gaining. You will find your zone. You got this.

Another question I didnt know to ask my Dr
Snowgator replied to targa's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
The size band depends on the diameter of your stomach. A person with a higher BMI is likely to need a larger size band than a person with a lower BMI to start with. The port on the allergan band is taller than the port on the Realize band, so it depends on which brand of lap band your doctor uses. Your weight loss should not vary based on band size, it depends on your compliance, and how much saline is injected into your band over time to narrow the stoma opening. -
Need help to get back on the band wagon

I have been struggling too. i went 2 months without losing anything. then i stuck to the diet for 2 weeks and lost 5 lbs. in two weeks. fortunately and unfortunately i started a new job--great that i started working--bad for the diet. I get to eat for free in the cafeteria where i work, only problem is there are FEW healthy choices. and i find myself eating things i shouldnt eat. its not so much the quantity that i am having trouble with--its the quality. i work from 6a-6p, so its really hard for me to get motivated to get up early to pack a healthy Breakfast and lunch especially since the food is free. i think its a good idea to start the shakes if you havent lost weight in a week--i havent tried it yet. i think i will try it this week. thanks for the idea. good luck with getting a fill!!!
