10/26 Surgery! Anyone interested in a surgery buddy/support group?
Hhking replied to BypaSSSed's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Just had my bypass 11/12. -
strictures are pretty rare in sleeve patients (more common on bypass patients, but still, only about 5% of bypass patients get them) - although they're not unheard of. If it continues (after taking the advice of the people above), just let your clinic know.

MaybeMeow waves hand. I can't vomit and I'm worried about it. I'm 5.5 months post RNY and had one serious scare where I was so extremely nauseous I nearly lost consciousness on my shower floor. I was doing the full bodied dry heaving that usually results in the stomach emptying, bile and all. But nothing came. It was clear I could not vomit. It was incredibly scary. Since then I've been nauseous many times ie; after sugar intake or during a migraine but it usually passes without dry heaving or the gagging out fluid others describe. But I worry about the stomach flu. What happens then? I've only had the stomach flu maybe 3-4 times in my life. But you know what I'm talking about, right? The kind where you'd push the "death-button" if there was one? It's 24-48 hours of living on the bathroom floor and vomiting frequently. It's misery until you have the relief of spilling your guts. And then it repeats. What happens when you can't actually spill your guts? I live in GREAT fear of that. So... has anyone has the stomach flu since Bypass?

Hi all- I'm at 3 months post op from bypass. I don't have any problems with being tempted by anything and I've learned now that if there's something I can like to try, to eat a bite and spit it out. No problems. However, I'm stumped with Thanksgiving. My kids are 19 and 23. This year we have all started working, my son and I both graduate college next semester and my son is about to leave our home. I think this will be our last Thanksgiving together as a family here at the house. I'm hitting pre-empty nest panic fast. I can't have turkey and the kids don't care so much about exactly how traditional it is. My daughter also has lost weight and is watching what she eats. I want to have it somewhat traditional but maybe have things all of us can eat without gorging. I also am just now starting to learn what foods I can and can't eat and there aren't many I can eat but I can eat a bit of potato. Would love to hear plans of others here (pre or post op) and how they're incorporating their diet with their families and traditions.

Surgery for someone with no health issues
ichabodny replied to LaoDaBeirut's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Everyone's said pretty much what I would be thinking. I can't even fathom a Dr saying they don't recommend the surgery for someone who will be hitting 40 in four years with a lifetime fighting obesity. Many co-morbidities don't show up until after age 45-50 and then it's too late (take it from one who knows). That a Dr would say that is just too much. The type of surgery is completely up to you and are Dr. Many people find the highest risks determining their surgery is heart conditions (ruling out bypass) and, more commonly, heartburn or gerd (giving more importance to the after-effect risk in the sleeve) but that is between you and what your medical professional determine. I did have gerd stage 3 which kind of made it almost a no-brainer and I am very happy with my decision as the surgery took care of almost all of my very serious and [one] life-threatening co-morbidity that didn't show up until a couple years ago (age 48). I was very scared to have the surgery but knew it could mean life-threatening problems in the next 5 years, so I did it and am very, very happy with having my life back. You should be fine under insurance with just your bmi-no other co-morbidities are necessary to qualify. It's a very big decision but you are correct in the instinct that you can have a much better life and healthier future with either surgery. -
I am now close to 3 months post-op from the bypass. I had some complications just after; one being that two of my incisions were opened 2 days post op in the hospital. I also had a lot of bruising and swelling from passing out (apparently) the day after surgery and then vomiting violently due to some sort of reaction to the anesthesia. I had to stay in the hospital 6 days and even then fought to go home. Because of all this, my stomach was not only black/purple and I looked 6 months pregnant for about 2 weeks after the surgery, gained a lot of weight and had problems with gas pain for the delayed recovery. My husband and I had to add a silver kind of sulfur inside two of the incisions and stop the bleeding, put antiseptic inside of them and stuff gauze all the way inside each open incision. With all this, after about week 3, I was feeling like a new person. Like all of the sudden, I woke up and the swelling went down, the gas pain was gone and the incisions were starting to heal. It did take about 6 weeks for the sharp pains from the incisions to completely stop the sort of knife feeling and for them to really close up pretty good but I had some extreme scenarios with that. Keep moving! It's so hard just after surgery, no matter which one you get. But do everything your Dr says, even if you are really struggling and just keep moving to get the gas through. It does get better and you'll be past this part of the surgery. Hugs to all of you.

Hairless after surgery
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to nana2020's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I didn’t notice but then again, I shaved my head at month 3 post op VSG. I did however notice lots of new prickly hairs the month after I had my revision (9months post VSG). It didn’t bother me too much just felt weird growing back in. I do take hair skin and nail gummies most days and my hair 8 months from shaving is now between ear and shoulder length and my hair had always grown slow before surgery. -
Its done but oh my GOD

It's miserable at first after the bypass. I didn't have a bowel movement in the hospital, but I did pass gas. The walking really helps with the gas, so you need to walk as much as you possibly can. It sounds as if it's starting to get better as you can keep some pureed food down. I wasn't allowed purees until 10 days after the op; it was just liquids. Hope you start feeling better soon. -
Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?
Grammie2 replied to Lanie Hardy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my bypass on Nov. 4, and I am still struggling with lower back pain. I don’t have much of any pain, mostly tenderness in my abdominal area. I also am very tired and weak and cannot stand like in the kitchen for more than 15 minutes, but was told I need more protein. I struggle with these darn protein shakes, but have started adding Isopur whey protein isolate to as much as I can, in teaspoon increments. I added some to my jello fluff I made this afternoon. If it can be TOTALLY DISGUISED I think I can do better! I didn’t have any problems with nausea, so I would recommend you talk to the Bariatric office about that. You aren’t throwing up are you? If you are you definitely need to let them know because of the stitches on the inside. I saw your bio and we are both at the same height. We can keep in touch if you like, and if you wouldn’t mind, let me know what they say about your nausea. Maybe try to drink a little slower? Hope you find the help even just to confirm everything and rule out trouble! It helps. Take care! Jeanne Smoker -
Surgery postponed due to Covid
Chelle1007 replied to shannels's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was scheduled the 25th of November for bypass and it was cancelled yesterday. With the way things are going I can’t imagine it will happen this year and I can’t afford to pay my max out of pocket again, so this may be the end of the road for me. I wish you serious luck!!! -

I had my mini gastric bypass on 17 November. They were threatening to cancel it but it went ahead in the end. I’m struggling quite a bit with nausea, pain and fatigue, but everyone keeps telling me it will pass. I certainly hope so! -
Hi nana, I'm just now 3 months post-op bypass surgery. I've been tested and stay high with my protein and b levels. That will help you the most. I've just now started to notice some 'balding' areas in the front part of my hair and expected it. By month 4, it's possible I will have more hair loss but if it gets to be too much, just planning on a wig. A lot of people cut their hair short before the surgery and I did the same. I think that helps as I can, for now, bring bangs down. Most any surgeon will tell you that it can happen but the best way to combat it is to just stay up on your protein. The vitamin B is another thing they will make sure you get enough of. I am now 86 lbs lighter in 3 months (this includes the loss I had during program leading up to the surgery) and feel like a new person really. It was a tough recovery the first month but I'm so glad I did it. The hair loss is not a problem for me for this outcome.

Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?

Hi all ! I am having sleeve to gastric bypass revision on 11/23 . I had VSG done at the end of 2017. I lost 100lbs with the sleeve. I was short of my final goal but I was still happy with my results . I developed bile reflux this year and my surgeon felt this was the best way to treat it . I’m not really looking forward to surgery but I’ll be happy without the reflux and extra medicine I have to take. I’m nervous but I’m ready to get it over with . Good luck everyone ! -
Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?

Hi, I had my mini gastric bypass surgery yesterday. Feeling tired and sore but otherwise ok. Converted from a gastric band which I had 7.5 years ago. Lost lots of weight but unfortunately put it back on so hoping this time I can really get to grips with the lifestyle changes to lose and keep it off. -
Yes, I had the bypass. Honestly, if I’m still feeling like I am now at the time when things slow down, I could see myself panicking. I’ve never really had a specific goal for this in mind numbers-wise except to get as small as possible. My own goals (pre-op, anyway) had been more about quality of life issues. It’s relevant that I do have an addiction history, including highly restrictive eating. I wouldn’t say that I’ve ever felt addicted, though, to hyper palatable foods. I gained nearly all of my weight a few years ago while I was dealing with a chronic illness and wasn’t able to be active, and the rest of it when I was studying for a clinical doctoral degree and had wild hours of nonstop work and no time to cook. My own history hasn’t included very much, “I’m overeating this food because it’s tasty.” Its been much more of, “I’m eating Chinese takeout because it’s 11:30pm and I just now stopped working,” and, “I’m sick, stuck in bed/on the couch and depressed, and there’s nothing to do except eat.”

And you wish you would dump every time after having eaten carbohydrates. You're a bypass, right? Don't compare yourself to sleevers. You can still try to tell your anxious brain the facts. I don't know how bad your anxiety is though but most likely too many pressure inducing and anxiety provoking thoughts took hold in your mind over the last time. Btw, if you've ever heard something about the "window of weight loss closing after some months" (and I'm 1000% sure you have, most likely more than one time) - ditch the thought. It's bull crap. You will always lose weight when eating less calories than your body burns. Assuming that there's a "window of opportunity" only contributes to your anxiety by creating pressure to lose weight fast "before it's too late". It definitely is addictive. That raises the question: what will you do once weight loss slows down or when you've reached goal weight and the rush is gone? I've read something about overeaters not only being addicted to the rush of hyper palatable foods but also to the rush of strict dieting. I feel this is true.

Why not go ahead and have the sleeve and see how you do? A lot of people get to goal with the sleeve. Most insurances will cover a revision if the first surgery fails. So you could have the DS done later if it turns out you don;t lose enough with the sleeve.

Beginning BMI 35 or under
healthy and fit @ 60 replied to 1GardenGirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am at BMI of 35 or 207lbs at 5'5". My highest weight was 218. I am just finishing up my 6 month prerequisites. Hoping for surgery in January. I have not told very many people. Everyone has their own opinions and I really don't care what they think. I am almost 60 and have been battling my weight since I was 30. Do it for yourself. Keep it to yourself. I am having gastric bypass done due to GERD. I am also a diabetic, hypertension, sleep apnea, joint pain, back pain. I am retiring from Nursing in 2 years and I want to enjoy my new life. We plan to travel. I want to hike and bike and not huff and puff! Best of luck to you! Sent from my SM-G986U using BariatricPal mobile app -

Surgery for someone with no health issues
catwoman7 replied to LaoDaBeirut's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
yes. I was 373 lbs at 5'6" with no health issues other than arthritis (and being super morbidly obese). Even though I had no major issues at the time, I knew they were probably just around the corner, and I worried that I wouldn't see my 60th birthday without doing something drastic about my weight. How many people do you see over age 60 or 70 who are super morbidly obese? Not many. Plus I was tired of just existing - I wanted my life back again. I really don't understand that 3rd surgeon you went to. Weighing that much is a huge risk to your health. as far as surgeons #1 and #2, both are good surgeries. In general, if you have GERD, most surgeons recommend that you go with bypass. If you don't, it' pretty much comes down to personal preference. You'll find people who have had good success with both. -
Surgery for someone with no health issues
LaoDaBeirut posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi everyone! I'm strongly considering gastric bypass and have done consultations with 3 surgeons. One told me I qualified for the surgery and approved me and suggested the bypass. Another said surgery was an option and recommended the sleeve. The third said that medically I could qualify but he didn't recommend surgery for me as other than obesity I have no other co-morbidities. I'm 36, female, 6'1, 410 pounds. My BMI is 54 and has been around this high for at least a decade. I'm one of those "lucky" fat people who don't store fat close to internal organs and so I haven't developed significant health issues. My BP is normal, no diabetes, heart disease high cholesterol, etc. I've managed to have a pretty active lifestyle despite my weight and have been a competitive powerlifter for years. I want to get the surgery because I'm aware that just because I'm "healthy" now that doesn't mean I will be 5 or 10 years from now. I would also like to do things like fit into airplane seats with ease and not worry about whether I will fit into a chair or break a bed frame. I want to be able to go skydiving and bungee jumping and things I've never been able to do as a big person. I've tried to lose weight before and always gained back whatever I lose. Has anyone been in a similar position? I was honestly quite surprised by the reaction I got as doctors have been telling me to lose weight for years. Now when I say I do want to do that it's like well maybe don't lose weight this way. My gut feeling is to go forward with the surgery anyway as I want to lose weight for my own reasons but I would love to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation.
