  1. Hi there. Congrats on your upcoming surgery. I'm scheduled to have a revision 4/11 and share some of the same concerns. It's totally normal to be emotional and sorta freaking out. Dehydration is a concern but I'm sure your surgeon has and will provide post op instructions on ways to avoid it. Some of us will breeze right through while others will struggle and experience dehydration. Pain varies also person to person. What I will say to you is no matter the struggles or hurdles we have to over come in the beginning they all pass. Hang in there and try to find comfort in the wonderful way your life is about to change in the long run. Always know in the back of your mind if it gets bad it will eventually get better. Hang in there and wishing you the very best on your WLS journey.

    The stigma of Cosmetic Surgery

I lost over 230 lbs and being 58 yrs old I had more skin than I care to remember, I had a full abdominoplasty 360 degrees , arms done, inner thighs lifted, now I am about to go into hospital for my final surgery of a breast lift. So far I have 18 hours of surgery with a possible 5 hours this next one, as I have some small revisions to do from previous operations too. If someone had said to me 3 yrs ago would u ever have plastic Surgery I would have said no but I see this as just surgery, it's not for cosmetic reasons, I feel it's all a medical need, my life is impacted by saggy skin and therefore I want it gone. Saggy skin is more or less inevitable with this much weight loss. What would I do if I couldn't get it removed.. Wear it like a badge of honour and be proud that u no longer fill it !

    3 Month Mark

Weight loss has been all post op. I wasn't able to do the liquid diet beforehand since I was an emergency Lapland to sleeve revision. I workout a lot. Three days of the week i do weights and 6 days I do cardio. I eat anything I want for the most part except carbs and try my best to stay away from sugar.
  4. The way I look at it , and this may sound terrible , but I’m not getting where I want to be as things are right now so why not try the revision. It can’t get worse than the mental hell I live with everyday spending another day unhappy. Good vibes to you and your new journey !!! Super early in your sleeve journey. I will be excited to see how things go for you.

    Just had revision

Congratulations on your revision! That's awesome that the surgery went so well and you are managing the pain well. I want to get my lap band removed & get the gastric bypass at the same time. The surgeon's office that I called said the doctor only does one surgery at a time. I'd have to wait to get the band removed and wait for three months before he would do the gastric bypass. I don't want to go through two surgeries and my insurance will only pay for one surgery "per lifetime". If you don't mind sharing, what did your surgeon charge for the two procedures? I've read it can cost around 10-12k to remove the band and 20-25k for a gastric bypass. I'm sure it has to be cheaper to do both at the same time then do the two operations separately. Thanks for any info you can provide! Holly Sent from my Pixel 4a using BariatricPal mobile app

    Band To Sleeve

I got the band in 2007 and just hated it. I only lost about 50 lbs then gained back 15 over the course of a couple of years. The same surgeon did the revision to the sleeve and I couldn't be happier. If you are in So. Cal see Dr. Paya in West Hills and best of luck to you.
  8. I had lap band and port removed on 8/10/15 due to complications from prolapse and then slip 9 months later, all which had cause me to vomit everything I ate. I had lap band for 4 years. Lost 80 pounds. Since removal, I have had NO reflux or heartburn which has been amazing. I haven't had much of an appetite and have had pain at the port site, but pain has improved every day. I had gained 8 pounds due to surgery, but have lost 7 pounds over night last night. I am now on a soft food diet until my post op appt and have been logging my calories on fitness pal and using my Vivosmart activity tracker. I have been focusing on protein to keep up my energy level. Drinking water, premier protein shakes, low fat cottage cheese, and eggs with some grape or orange juice when my head feels "swimmy". I plan to revise to gastric bypass based on my surgeons recommendations in October/November after I heal up from this. I can't wait to get back to Zumba after clearance from my surgeon. I will work my butt off to keep my weight maintained until my revision. Here is my most recent belly pic. It is healing and I am allowed to shower. The biggest incision still hurts but pain has improved. See my belly face? The 2 small incisions are the eyes and my actual belly button is the mouth LOL. Belly is still swollen, I am sure it will go down soon

Sleeve to Bypass, NO NO NO?

I was sleeved last Oct 25th I can relate to your issues, I have terrible heartburn, reflux, and nausea. I originally though that it would go away but has only stayed the same and is worse at times. I have been following up with my doctor and it was determined after an endoscopy that I have Bile Reflux. The only believed to correct it is to have RNY. RNY will cause the bile to not be so close to the stomach and having RNY relieves the pressure that is in your stomach that can contribute to GERD or reflux. I am schedule for surgery Oct 31 to have a revision to RNY. I hope that this will be it for surgeries. I like the sleeve and it has done well with a total loss of 106lbs. I hate to get rid of it but need to have RNY done to prevent further issues.

    Sleeve revision to bypass 2/6.

Best of luck with your revision surgery! I did the same thing for the same reasons a year ago. My biggest issue was a hiatal hernia that had caused great pain and difficulty eating. I also had pretty bad reflux. It seemed like recovery was about the same the second time around, although I was seven years older. I did not lose as much weight after the bypass, but probably because I didn't have nearly as much to lose. As has been said, be careful to chew thoroughly and you still might find some foods that cause you challenges for a while. Just go slowly and if something causes issues wait a while before trying it again. The pouch does react differently than the sleeve and it takes a while to learn how to deal with it. Two things that you may or may not experience after the bypass are dumping syndrome (your body reacting to sugars) or reactive hypoglycemia or late dumping (your body overproducing insulin in response to a meal). I was lucky not to experience dumping but do have issues with the reactive hypoglycemia. I noticed that I lost weight for about 3 months after the revision, then stopped. One difference for me this time is that if I gain weight it seems to stay around, where often times with the sleeve I would gain a couple pounds then lose them easily. Not sure whether this means that my metabolism wants to be at a higher set point weight. I didn't really do the revision to lose weight, and I'm still 15-20 pounds lower than when I had the revision, but it is something I've noticed. Also, my experience is that although the surgery helped tremendously with reflux, for me it's still not gone completely. I'm still taking omeprazole daily, and if I eat certain things in the evening I might still have a reflux issue late at night. I can completely control this by not snacking at night.
  11. I started at 540 pounds and I am now at 315 pounds. I am not at goal (which is 199) but I asked my bariatric surgeon about when people got surgery because my stomach hang really bothers me already. They said I could make a consultation with a plastic surgeon and see when their recommendations were. I met with the plastic surgeon and he said I have 2 options. He said usually he recommends people to wait until goal BUT mine is so large and has been giving me so many issues with rashes and pain that he would remove the flap after my one year anniversary (Which is May 29th) but that Insurance would only pay for the surgery once and I would most likely need a revision since I still have 100 pounds to lose but I would have to pay out of pocket for that. Has anyone else gone through this and had to make this decision? I'm not quite sure what to do. I really want this flap gone because it's causing me so many issues but I don't know what to do. Also, did anyone else get the surgery and lose their belly button?? He said I would no longer have a belly button. I'm kind of excited that I get to tell people I was grown in a lab or that I'm an alien though. haha But how does it look?
  12. People typically go for a sleeve to bypass revision because there was something wrong with the sleeve (strictures, excess fundus left behind, etc.) that the surgeon didn't know how to correct or was incompatible with their physiology, often causing significant reflux problems that couldn't be corrected with diet or medication. Doing such a revision simply for inadequate weight loss or regain reasons is less successful as the two procedures are very similar in their strength, or power, against weight problems. Regain characteristics are similar for both procedures, though some patient may be more compatible with one or the other (think of it as a personality fit or conflict.) Look carefully at what the reasons for your regain were and address them first, or else you are likely to have the same problem in another few years. The more one gets into doing revisions, the more one paints oneself into a corner, leaving fewer options in the future. Also, the bypass is something of a dead end procedure, as it is very difficult to revise it to something else if it isn't compatible with you - they can do bands over the bypass or various means of tightening the stoma but none have a very high success rate. The best way to correct a poorly performing bypass is to revise it to a DS (duodenal switch) which offers much better regain resistance than either the sleeve or the bypass, but is a very compex revision from a bypass (there's maybe a half dozen surgeons around the country qualified for such a procedure.) Fortunately, the DS is a very straightforward revision from a sleeve as it uses the sleeve as its basis, so that would be something to seriously consider if you need to revise a sleeve for weightloss or regain purposes. This doc has several youtube videos out there that are worth watching and maybe get some ideas of what can be done in your situation. His overall diet/lifestyle approach is fairly vegetable intensive approach which has a lot of merit but may or may not be something that you can do. Good luck in working through this problem.....
  13. I'm a little with Rainer.. I guess it's what they're saying, depends on what you want to hear!! I work with my entire family, including DH. So everyone sees me every day. They have blatently said, they don't notice the weightloss since they see me all the time. So, I send them e-mails with my before & after pic (of the month). And they go WOW! And that's that. DH has made a comment when it comes to sex, that he notices then. People in the back of our plant, who don't see me often, will once in a while say they can tell I've lost weight, ask me how much, etc. First, I love to hear that they can tell- because sometimes I can't tell myself When they ask how much, I get dodgy. And on smoke breaks, I don't like when people just want to talk about how much more I've lost since xxx. Especially since I'm in perma-bandster hell till my next surgery. And word spread like wildfire about me having to do a revision surgery, and I know that makes a lot of people think "She should have done the other one", or "It's not going to work".. the last one is how I feel right now. Just tough spots, and wish it wasn't a hot topic.
  14. It's been some time since you posted about your revision from Band to RYN. I am having mine in 3 weeks; the Band caused terrible reflux and I had the fill removed two years ago. Now that some time has passed, how do you feel about the RYN. Any suggestions?
  15. I'm not trying to be rude by any means (Because I know typing can come off completely diff than I'm actually trying to say it), but what are you looking for from this forum? Are you looking to be talked into/out of the plication? I would be happy to tell you whey I decided on the sleeve, and I'm sure many on here would be happy to give the reasons they chose sleeve, but I feel a little confused as to what you're looking for as in responses. I chose the sleeve vs plication because 1) The sleeve reduces ghrelin production 2) The amount of time that it has been done 3) The number of resources I could find with information about sleeve vs plication (There was much less informatino I could find on plication) and 4) I am looking for a permanent change, and the reason to have plication (For me) would be because I am afraid of revision. There is no going back, but that's both a plus and a minus for me, and the positives outweighed the minuses.

how do you know when to stop eating?

It's funny cuz since being banded for almost 4 yrs prior to my revision 5 1/2 weeks ago, my stop signal was always "I got tired of eating". was never really "full", just couldn't eat anymore cuz I didn't want to. Now, I feel like I've swallowed a plum that sitting right at the top of my stomach. It doesn't hurt, but feels like if I take one more bite I might vomit. So I stop. Haven't vomited yet with the slveev (unlike my frequent vomiting with my band). Since first getting the band in 2009, I have yet to feel that "Thanksgiving full" I used to feel. It's more like ucomfortableness.

6/30/09 Look mom no stitches in my eyes!

LOL! I was scalped! Actually what the doctor wrapped my head for is primarily my forhead. He relesed the pressure on the frown muscle, i don't know what it is called and did a small brow lift. I wish he had lifted more. This involved pulling my forhead muscles up. i have tow incisions in the edge of my hair line slightly to the outside of my eyebrows middle. I also have various incisions on the side of my head hairline area and beind and in front of my ears. It was neccessary to remove quiet a bit of skin so he had no make several incisions other than the ones in front of my ears. He also trimmed my earlobes. Mine were very long and loose. They are not sweet and petite now, but are much inproved. It was neccesary for him to do a revision on one of them today. Looks really really good with the revision. I can't wait till all the swelling is down and bruising is gone. I have accumulated fluid under and behind my ears. Hopefully it will go away without a problem. Corliss
  18. Well I'm in Australia and you dont have to fight here to get the surgery at a BMI of 35 which is where I was at, with no comorbidities (apart from a bad ankle). It cost me the same as it cost anyone else, and you really dont go self pay here as our medical system is entirely different - but basically if you have private health insurance and your doc agrees to do it, the health funds dont argue. And if you dont and have it done through the public system you may have to wait a long time, but it will cost you pretty much nothing. You can go privately and self pay but most docs wont touch that due to the likelihood of running out of funds if you need revision surgery etc. It was the best decision I ever made though. I am now normal weight and whislt I would like to be a bit lighter still, I would be happy if I stayed here, I am maintaining effortlessly at the moment.

    ODD Man Out!

You aren't alone. The others will chime in I'm sure. But, OregonDaisy had zero issues drinking post-op with her revision. Maybe y'all are quick healers? OregonDaisy said that Dr. Aceves made her slow down while she was there because she could drink so much so soon after surgery. If you want, she's really great about answering questions, so shoot her a private message, and she'll reply back if she doesn't see your thread.
  20. Well some insurance companies only cover one WLS procedure for life...I would call the insurance company directly to see what the requirements are.... Alot of people like to rely on the doctor's office to do the work for them, and when something is missed and their stuff is denied, they like to blame the doctor's office when if they called the insurance company themself it would've saved time... I called and was told revision would not be covered on my policy so I self paid

I Love Having Water At Night Again!

I was revised back in July as well, I am struggling to get the last 10-15 pounds off you would think after 2.5 years with the lap band I would know how to eat. I had more success loosing weight with the band than I do now. Of course I could not eat anything with the band. What do you find is the difference in the weightloss?
  22. I don't think you need two years of history anymore. Their requirements were revised on 8/12. Must meet either 1 (adults) or 2 (adolescents): For adults aged 18 years or older, presence of persistent severe obesity, documented in contemporaneous clinical records, defined as any of the following: Body mass index (BMI) (see appendix) exceeding 40; or BMI greater than 35 in conjunction with any of the following severe co-morbidities: Clinically significant obstructive sleep apnea (i.e., person meets the criteria for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea set forth in CPB 0004 - Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Adults); or Coronary heart disease, with objective documentation (by exercise stress test, radionuclide stress test, pharmacologic stress test, stress echocardiography, CT angiography, coronary angiography, heart failure or prior myocardial infarction); or Medically refractory hypertension (blood pressure greater than 140 mmHg systolic and/or 90 mmHg diastolic despite concurrent use of 3 anti-hypertensive agents of different classes); or Type 2 diabetes mellitus
  23. I had my band removed after 6 years and revised to a sleeve on July 10th. I can finally eat regular food only very small amounts. With the band I ate a lot of Ice cream and crunchy things,The only foods that I could tolerate. I waited a long time because I didn't think I would be covered for a revision. I am so happy that I finally had the surgery. 5 of my friends had the lap band about the same time as me. 3 had it removed and one was converted to gastric bypass.
  24. I'm in a panic right now I had the lap band in 2012 and started having problems, so I started looking into a revision to bypass. I completed all the required steps the insurance requires (dietitian meetings, Psych eval, stress test, EGD). EGD even showed that my band had prolapsed. Everything was pointing to in the direction I needed to get an approval. Fast forward 3 weeks - I get a letter from the insurance that my claim was denied!!! WHAAAT?!?! I called the doctor's office in a panic.....They said the next step is for them to do a peer to peer with them (which is what they do for people that get denied). I do remember that I was told that revisions usually take 2 rounds of approvals. Maybe that's what this means? Anyway - has anybody gone through this as well? I have United Healthcare. Do they typically approve after the peer to peer? I don't understand why I wasn't approved to begin with. I'm eating tums like they're candy at this point! (because of my issues, not because of the stress of not being approved LOL) UGH!!!!
  25. I have united healthcare and am revisioning from lapband to sleeve on 2/20 I am wondering if your medical group has a lot of experience with revisions, mine did and told me they knew “all the right things to say” and got approval. Hopefully your group will fight for you with the insurance company and all will work out for you... I know you are probably as anxious as I am to get the lapband out! Best wishes!
