    Any December surgery

I just had mine on the 3rd, came home today, had the mini bypass and the incision sites (5 in total) are rather tender, but the gas is unbelievably painful, but I it does shift in small doses, it would probably shift more if I didn't have limited mobility

    Mini bypass

I just came home today after finally having my mini bypass, my question is, has anyone else who has gone through weightloss surgery had a sudden drop in their immune system? I ask as I'm beginning to get a sore throat, but have honey to help with that

    Whey isolate protein powder

The apps are always weird, depending on what you use. I would ask your Dr for your specific case but even too much protein can give problems. However, percentages are misleading on apps. My Dr gives me an ideal of between 70 and 77 as a base (my age is a factor as well) but after the labs, the surgeon said I should up them another 30 or so and then get labs done again. He said it can happen that some of the protein gets flushed down with the other nutrients unable to be kept with the bypass. I'm going again on Monday to get more labs done and can update but I think shooting for between 70-90, depending on surgeries too, can be a good start. This is one topic that I've heard a lot of different comments from Dr's varying a bit. If you can get hold of your Dr and ask for follow-up info, it can be the most helpful to your specific case. You're doing great honestly, with trying to do the right thing and watching nutrition.
  4. Breakfast was yogurt and a clear protein drink. Snack was a protein drink. Lunch was two egg whites with Parmesan cheese. Snack was a cheese stick. I was craving something savory for dinner and tried a few teaspoons of mashed potatoes which just came back up. Now I just feel like hell. I still have to take my night meds so I hope they stay down. The lap band was so different. When I couldn’t tolerate a food I just threw it up immediately. The bypass is so different. It’s like it keeps trying and trying to go down for an hour and then finally it comes back up. I’m learning, eat slowly, chew everything. How did you do today?
  5. Hello , I am 2 yrs out from bypass and dating is ridiculous. Was before I lost the weight . It’s seemingly impossible now . I can’t meet any one decent . I’ve tried , I’ve not tried . I’m am about to give up . Any dating sites that cater to the WLS community?
  6. Hi! I had my gastric bypass Nov. 4 - one month today! I have struggled with the protein shakes, and have found many others have too, so I dont feel alone. I have opted for Atkins Shakes at 15 gr. Per shake which is low, but I can drink them pretty good, and add some Isopur flavorless protein to other things in my diet. Today I added some to my tomato soup, and it wasn’t bad. I guess I’ll be adding it to my dinner tonight as well. Over the last 2 weeks I have become constipated, and wanted to know what anybody has been taking for it. I was adding fiber powder, but it really wasn’t doing much of anything. I think it is the iron that’s messing me up, but it’s in my multivitamin, so I am changing to one that doesn’t have it. Is anyone taking a stool softener? I called my dr. Office to ask if it’s ok to take a pill in capsule form and she said not til 3 months! My stool softener is a capsule... maybe a different brand of fiber would be better? also - does electrolyte water have any flavor? I have a bottle to try, but haven’t yet. Just wondered, how does it help?
  7. Have you made any decisions on what you're going to do yet? Like you I had a lapband in 2010, I am having revision surgery to a bypass in January....I am heavier now than I was before I even got my band. 😬 I had a consultation with my surgeon - he said he doesn't recommend sleeve revisions from a lapband, so that is why we went with the bypass. The lapband and bypass work in different ways, so you won't necessarily be in the same boat 10 years down the line....but I absolutely understand your worries. As for recommendations, I'm having mine done with Healthier Weight. The surgeon (Rishi Singhal) who specializes in revision surgery is based in Birmingham so I'm having to travel up there from London but I'm happy with his experience and level of expertise in revision surgery. I found out about him after seeing him on the news having done a very large ladies bypass - BBC Midlands Today interview Rishi Singhal about weight loss surgery and NHS funding - YouTube Good luck with whatever you decide!
  8. I wouldn't worry about pain. It's pretty extensive surgery (12 1/2 hrs!) so of course there is pain. But, there are plenty of drugs available to control pain! I only took one dose of narcotics immediately after I came home from the hospital. I then took gabapentin and celebrex around the clock for the next 2 weeks and then just when I felt I needed it. I did get a refill on the gabapentin because I used to get nerve pain at night. If I had felt the need and the pain was bad enough I wouldn't have hesitated to take something stronger. The healing on the lower body lift has been perfect and the scar is looking pretty good. The incisions on both my arms opened up over my biceps. The right was pretty small and healed nicely after a little wound care. The left was pretty big and is almost healed but will need a scar revision in the future. It's not uncommon for that to happen when you think about how tight they pull your skin. He removed 9 inches of skin from my left arm! It is half the size it used to be! I measured 73 inches of incision from my LBL and brachioplasty! My brachioplasty was considered "extended" too. The scar goes from the lower edge of my boob to midway between my elbow and wrist. There are a lot of sutures involved and it's when your body spits out sutures that didn't dissolve that can cause the incision to open. I'm not sure how you would use crutches after that surgery. I guess you would have to discuss it with your doctor. The armpit scars actually healed the quickest. I have my next appointment in Feb. I'll be 6 months out from this surgery and we will discuss and plan my next surgery-breast lift and back lift. However, I just had 2 biopsies in my left breast (benign) so he is not sure he will do my boobs yet. Even though there is pain involved and long term wound care and scars...I'd do it all over again. I love my results! It was worth every dollar I spent. I did not use insurance.

    Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?

Hello 👋🏾 I also had my bypass done on Nov 23rd in Fremont CA. I was on a horrible 2 week liquid diet before hand. I am currently on the stage 2 puréed foods. I’m having such a hard time getting anything in especially my protein. I used to love the premade shakes before surgery but now I can’t tolerate them. I thought I was so prepared for this but nope my body doesn’t like anything I used to like before surgery so it’s been an interesting 9 days.

    Whey isolate protein powder

Hi, I usually use genepro just for the texture and lack of extra taste, less calories and more protein. I did try Iso (without the taste) but I quickly stocked up again on my genepro. I'm working on adding more protein but the last labs I had done, the Dr said to up them by 25% over the ones I was given because the bypass will lose some of the nutrients. My protein now is around 80-90. I get about 40 of that from genepro and the rest from what I eat. Everyone is really different with these surgeries and if it works for you, you stick with that. As long as it's ok'd by your NUT and labs are ok, go with what you like.
  11. I am the exact same way !!! I dont get the signal either until its too late. I had to start measuring food again because I can eat more with this bypass and it gets me into trouble with feeling like crap afterwards. I have to lay down and I cant throw up either so I suffer too. The sleeve was easier for me because it felt more natural. I knew when to stop. I am sure you will have no problem reaching your goal and more then likely you will go under 145 !! Best of luck
  12. I had revision due to bad reflux that was causing damage to my vocal chords but I also never reached my goal weight with the sleeve. I am hoping to reach 145 with this revision. I am currently at 154 and seem to be holding steady and am hoping for another drop. ; ) I was about 173 pre-surgery before the pre-op diet. I am now eating regular foods and am now realizing that there is a restriction and that if I do eat too much, it hurts really bad. I have had a few episodes with dumping however my body doesn't throw things up. I think it's because of the hiatal hernia repair with mesh that keeps foods from coming up. I wish I could throw up as it would be easier and provide relief at times but my body was always one that to hold things down and just make me suffer. So instead, I get the sweats and the pains and just suffer for a period of time. I am pretty much noticing that there is no indication of "about full" and that I am going to have to measure stuff and just stop before reaching the point the of no return. It seems to be all or nothing with this pouch. Once it realizes it is full, it's too late and I have overdone it. I probably need to learn to slow down even more and see if that works but I don't seem to get a signal to the brain that I am full? Maybe, I just never feel hungry and am just eating because I know I need too and so there is no signal because the head doesn't think it is hungry? I guess I need to take stock of what my body is feeling more and see where it goes. I am so terrified of drinking because it goes down so easy and I am always afraid that I am drinking too fast as being told that I could stretch my pouch by drinking to fast. So with that I am constantly trying to slow down my drinking and making sure I don't gulp down water. My bowels are definitely acting different and I am hoping they level out at some point and they get easier as well as I am currently living on Miralax twice daily to keep things smooth, LOL. This is definitely a different journey then the sleeve. Seems the sleeve was easier?
  13. Hi there. I had gastric bypass about 3 months ago, have had no complications and have lost about 54 pounds so far. All has been going swimmingly! EXCEPT, I had some whipped cream Sunday which led to diarrhea and then all day extreme gas pains after eating small snacks. I switched to liquids on Monday, still experienced severe gas all day and today, Tuesday, had low carb, low fat, high protein snacks and tolerated them well. UNTIL I just had sugar free pudding and a small bit of chicken ravioli (3-5 bites) and the gas pain started up again. Ugh! Does anyone know what I should be doing?! Is this normal to have gas pains like this several days after dumping?
  14. Hi, I had bypass on 11/18. Everything has been going pretty smoothly. Just starting to get some urges on being hungry for first time. Turns out cream of wheat with soymilk & Protein Powder did not make me feel full. Tried something new and didn’t work. Had to add refried Beans & 1/2 Protein Shake for Snacks as soon as I could to stop the hunger feeling. How are you doing?
  15. I started my pre-op diet today- Dec. 1 Feeling excited, surgery date Dec. 15 Bypass
  16. I had gastric bypass on 11/17 and am looking for some support people. If anyone is interested!

The changes we don't talk about

Anyone else have a reverse body image before WLS? I look in the mirror and didn't see the 232lb person. I saw "normal".... It wasn't until I didn't recognize myself in a picture that I really saw what I looked like.... I was shocked and disgusted. Then as the years went by, looking in the mirror, it's become the other where I don't see the thin size 0 person.... The mind is a crazy thing for sure. I hold up jeans in a size 0 and think.... OMG there is no way, but they do. I have a hard time parting with things that are too big. Just yesterday I brought 5 shirts and 2 skirts to the tailor. I'm obsessed with my boobs now. After years and years of being an H cup, they look so small as a FF-G.... I know that they are still bigger than most, but to me they look tiny...... ugh.. Drinking has become a 1 drink a day thing. I just challenged myself to see how long I could go if I really tried..... 23 days. Had one Sunday night and it knocked my D!ck in the dirt..... Thank the dear Lord in Heaven I don't really like shopping. I hate going into a shop and picking things out.... I'm terrible at it. I also hate getting undressed and dressed over and over. I moved to another state where no one knew the size 20 me. No one knew my past, I knew no one and it was so liberating...... This is also how I managed to have revision SX without telling anyone... that in itself has been awesome. Especially this time around..... (raises a hand and admits) it wasn't hard work at all.

The changes we don't talk about

I share your sentiments. I am extremely tall for a woman so adding big and tall has always reminded me that I take up space in the world. I tend to be fairly shy in person because I am always trying to make myself smaller. I had a lap band 12 years ago and I struggled with body image when i lost a lot of weight. I never threw out my fat clothes and continued to buy clothes that were way too big. my band failed twice before I switched over to the bypass. I have kept it very private but I’m not looking forward to the gushing that will happen by others when they see my progress. I am not in the same place as everyone else with my emotional progress.
  19. I had my Bypass Surgery Nov. 4, so it’s only been a month. I have read all your insights, and think I myself may be there someday in the near future. I’ve already been feeling that when I look in the mirror and I see my face seeming to be a little thinner after 20 lb. loss but I have this type of face and jawline that no matter how I look in the mirror my face will look like a turtle with loose skin hanging from her throat!,! I’m almost afraid to think positive. I am just hoping to make it to the regular food phase! My appetite has been deeply hampered by these high protein drinks. It has taken away my appetite for anything else. And I’m going on about me, and I’m sorry. This isn’t the topic. I wish you all the best in finding peace and happiness in your life, as you continue to work through these times. I’m thankful I was able to see inside your lives a bit.

    Rescheduled Surgery

I'm sorry you and your husband got Covid. I have been trying to be careful since I am so scared of having to take steroids if I needed them. Does your doctor put you on anything to prevent ulcers when you had to take steroids? I know others on here after bypass have had to take a steroid for other reasons but my surgeon said I can never under any circumstance take them but I am sure one day I will need to.
  21. December 8th, 2020 Gastric Bypass surgery for me. Long road to get here. I'm confident about surgery and recovery, but really worried about emotional self-control later, especially when the novelty wears off. I'm already working with a therapist (who is actually 5 yrs. post-VSG - a happy accident that she was thee one who had an opening) and my program (Kaiser of Washington) offers really good support. Looking forward walking this journey with other Nov.-Jan. compatriots.
  22. Hi! I really appreciate what you shared as I'm heading into Gastric Bypass surgery on 12/8/2020. I particularly identified with staying with a spouse because I was overweight and felt that no one would want me. I had actually had this surgery scheduled for Feb. 2019, but my husband refused to acknowledge that he had diabetes and developed double vision, so I had to cancel because we felt we could not have both parents incapacitated. There were also issues of mild physical abuse (hitting, pushing), as well as verbal, emotional, and financial abuse. Turns out that I needed to lose his 330 lbs. prior to getting my surgery done and ended a 25 year marriage. Life is so much better! I wish you the same feelings of relief, freedom, and confidence. You can do this.

    Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?

I'm sorry to hear. You trusted them and they aren't there for you. That just sucks. I didnt tell a soul except for 1 girlfriend who we had the lapband together. She may also be doing the revision so it kind of worked. My clinic would not do surgery unless I had a witness signing my documents and someone picking me up after surgery. So I had to tell 1 person. Otherwise, I would say nothing. People are funny. I didn't want any questions or sabotage. I'm on this journey with all of you!!! We are here for you EMT!!
