Anyone for Jan/ Feb 2021
Betty1971 replied to ChiNaDoll2285's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't freak out about not being about to do it after surgery!! Everything changes in an instant. The first week will you will not want to eat anything. You will have to force yourself to get your fluids in and then after you can get fluids in you will work to get in your protein. Definitely do what you can do now to lose what you can and follow the Drs and dietitians pre op diet, my program had me on a low carb high protein liquid diet for two weeks before surgery to try to shrink up my liver as much as possible to make surgery as easy and successful as possible and those were the hardest two weeks as far as feeling hungry. After surgery I have never felt hungry, I have been super lucky and had an easy recovery as well. As long as you follow the program they give you post op and get in your fluids and don't try to push the boundaries (with no appetite its pretty easy to do) you will have no trouble. I do not know which surgery you are having but with the gastric sleeve it is pretty neat because when they remove the majority of the stomach you no longer have the hormones that make you hungry. I can't say with the gastric bypass how it works as I had the sleeve but don't freak yourselves out about how you will do it after the surgery because your tastes, systems and hunger all change big time when you wake up after surgery!!! Happy Holidays -
RNY because of GERD, not weight loss?
Tracyringo replied to AmandaQB's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had a revision on May 23 2020 due to gerd that caused erosive esophagitis D. 6 months later it has gone down to A which is great. I still have burning and am going to have the bravo test soon to find out why I am still producing so much acid since I am still taking 60mg Dexilant, pepcid at night, and carafette. -
I’ve been so amazed by my post op experience this time around. My sleeve to bypass conversion was on the 7th December (originally was going to be a few days earlier but got postponed slightly). This time around I have had very little pain, only slight gas pain, and since coming home 2 days ago I’ve had a lot of energy. So very thankful for such an easy recovery (so far). Wishing everyone else here a speedy recovery / and good luck for upcoming surgeries!!

I had gastric bypass surgery dec 7. Was discharged from hospital and on the way home started vomiting blood. I was then rushed back to the ER for them to find a pretty large blood clot in my intestines. Dr did a endoscopy and pulled the clot out. Now I feel 100x better.

I had my revision surgery yesterday morning (sleeve to bypass). I feel great when I’m not moving. Going from a seated position to standing (and vice versa) is painful. I at my first solid food today- salmon mushed up with a fork. So far so good.
-
I switched from sleeve to bypass 1 month before surgery. I’m very happy with my change and bypass recovery has been very straight forward no issues for me. No issues in food reintroduction either. It works! 22 lbs down in 3 weeks.

Hi, After my gastric bypass op , I recovered really well. I had little to none gas pain and could drink easily the day after. My surgeon commented that I looked like I hadnt had the operation because I was up and about doing well. I thought in terms of pain, I got lucky. SInce then I ve been eating solid foods earlier than expected ( I am now a month and a week post op. ) WELL. That changed yesterday. I had a kebab (I know I know, it was a one off takeaway. At least it had protein I guess) and it went down well. Until a couple of hours later, I was in agony ! The gas pain! The nausea! The 'stuck' feeling in my throat! Oh my gosh what a miserable experience. Couldnt sleep, tried to walk around , pain and vomiting ughh. I think the combination of eating too much (I didnt have all of it, only a third), too quickly and its oil content caused this. To think I was lucky to avoid this pain the first time around the op. I guess I needed to experience it to show I am still healing. Feel so stupid ! But I learnt my lesson. Gas pain is no joke.

Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?
TrueNorth1 replied to Lanie Hardy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
And you should be excited! That is a big drop!! So encouraging! I didn't have fears it wouldn't work - too much evidence shows it wil. My fears are the longevity ie. after 3-5 years. But I can't worry about 3-5 years from now. I had the mini - did anyone else have the mini bypass vs. sleeve or gastric bypass? My weight loss seems to be slower than others. I talked to my dietician today. I cant complain if it is a constant 3-4 pounds a week - I will take it!! But how can it differ so much from others? -
I'm only 6 weeks out from a bypass so can't really offer much advice, but could you maybe speak to a bariatric dietitian and see if they can offer advice? I think you may be right about restaurant meals, because I've worked in a restaurant before and the amount of oil they used to cook (and the cheap quality of the oil) is a bit of an eye opener. Hope you manage to resolve it.

I agree with Starwarsandcupcakes. I still can't eat chicken or meat at all - too dense for me, but can easily eat 4oz of high protein yoghurt. I was told to prioritise fluid intake first (at least 2 litres per day though my dietitian said I'd be working up to this for the first few weeks and that I should contact her if I couldn't take in at least 750ml per day). And secondly to prioritise at least 60g of protein per day. The diet plan I was given didn't have measurements of food, it was for calories per day. I'm 6 weeks out from RNY bypass and supposed to now be having at least 800 & no more than 1000 cals pd. As with your diet plan I was told to work towards having 3 small meals and 2 snacks but I still have to have a protein shake to get my protein in. I wouldn't be able to do it with food alone. As an evening meal I've just had half of a small baked potato [30g/1oz] (only the inside, not the skin), with 60g/2oz of canned tuna and teaspoon of low fat mayonnaise. That seems to be similar to your meal plan? As a snack I'd have for example the protein shake (146 cal/22g protein) or maybe 50g high protein yoghurt with about 10-20g fruit puree. Reading the various threads here I'd say everybody seems to have a different tolerance for what and how much they can eat? So I'd say aim for the regular pattern of eating, but eat what you feel you can tolerate.

I was told to walk as much as I was able from day 1, but other more strenuous exercise should wait till my 3 month check up. But I had a hernia repair at the same time as the bypass, so this may be specific to me. I'm thinking about starting a dance exercise dvd soon though as it's just a bit more energetic than walking.

Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?
TrueNorth1 replied to Lanie Hardy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's always good to ask to make sure. It is not to say I didnt feel anything...just nothing that made me go "ouch!". I still feel "stuff" inside. Mostly to the lower left. I am assuming that is where the bypass happened? So when I lie on my side (which took about 10 days before I really tried to) it's almost like I feel things moving around if that makes sense?. And sometimes right between my chest I feel something...like, tightness. I go tomorrow at noon to get my stitches taken out (I had a lapband removal as well) and will ask about the above. I am curious to see my scars! lol -

RNY because of GERD, not weight loss?
Rachelanne75 replied to AmandaQB's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi I had mine due to Gerd. Had sleeve done in 2013, hiatal hernia repair with complications 10/5/20 and had conversion to bypass 11/9/20 -
Hello! My husbands insurance finally added bariatric surgery onto the insurance plan. His work is based in MA so though we are in NC, we have BCBS OF MA. Does anyone know how long of a period I have to go on a weight loss program before I can get approved for gastric bypass? 3 months? 6? The insurance doesn’t start until Jan. 1st or I’d call them and get all the info I could. Thanks in advance!

Food Before and After Photos
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
About 4months post VSG to RNY revision and almost a year from my VSG. Rice is definitely a slider food for me so I try to be careful with it. Never thought a bowl with the measurements in it would be handy but here I am. 😂 -
4oz of certain things are much more dense than others. For example 4oz of fresh spinach is about 4 cups(3.4g protein, ~30 calories). Meanwhile, 4oz of chicken breast (25.7g protein, ~140 calories) is about the size of your palm. Also, 4oz of eggs is roughly 2.5 large eggs (15.75g protein, ~180 calories). Then you have things like regular cheddar cheese where 4oz is about a cup shredded (28.4g protein, ~460 calories) and 4oz of fat free cottage cheese (13g protein, ~70 calories) being 1/2 a cup. Im almost 4months post VSG to RNY revision (and a year VSG) and I couldn’t imagine trying to eat 4oz of chicken at one go. But cottage cheese and protein bars (usually around 2oz, 15g protein and ~160 calories for the ones I buy) I can do no problem. And 4oz (1/2 cup) of unsweetened applesauce with a scoop of unflavored protein powder was a lifesaver at 5 weeks post VSG for only 90 calories and 10g of protein. I’m also team “protein shake as coffee creamer” so I know I’m at least getting 20g of protein that way throughout the day depending on the shake I use. I also get the protein soup packets from the bariatricpal shop and have those most days I work. Just mix with hot water and go for around 100 calories and 15g of protein. Find what works for you even if that means getting your protein as liquids throughout the day.

Hi! We're surgery twins, along with GoldenGirl. As you said, it is nice to have support and know others are in the same boat. I have to be at Admitting at 5:30 in the morning tomorrow for my gastric bypass. However, the bright side is that I won't have that long to get hungry or thirsty. LOL! I am tempted to bring coffee to everyone. I want folks to be wide awake by the time they start cutting. Wishing you all the best of luck and sending you positive energy. 😊

My spice level preference has increased some. Chicken thighs are the only chicken I can eat now and I was an avid chicken eater pre WLS. I must say that I do find myself craving things I wouldn’t have before surgery like cabbage, butternut squash, and kimchi. A couple months after I had my VSG I cried in the grocery store parking lot because they didn’t have any grape Powerade zero as that and tea was the only liquids I could keep down. After my revision though that got so much better and I’m not sure why. But I do only use a half packet of crystal light in a 16oz bottled water now. 🤷♀️

I'm having band to RNY revision on December 11th! I am right there with you! Wishing you lots of luck!

Hey everyone! I'm having surgery this Friday Dec. 11th. Lapband to RNY revision. I am so nervous but so incredibly excited!!!!

I went to my consultation hard headed and wanting the bypass and the surgeon was just as hard headed and wisely said the sleeve because of my previous bouts of diverticulitis and previous bowel resections. I wanted the "whole deal" I wanted to be all in and now I am super happy with the sleeve and realized I should have understood that the Dr probably has his reasons for his recommendations and I am just an armchair Dr. Tell your Dr your reasonings for your choices and listen to his reasonings for his choices and spend some time researching both......remember that procedures are not what they used to be yesterday and both have really good results.
-
I have my upper GI test today, hopefully by Wednesday we will have results and be submitted to insurance! Here’s fingers crossed I’ll get in this month for my bypass!
-
bypass is usually recommended if you have GERD. There's a significant minority of people (I believe I've read 30%, but don't quote me on that) for whom the sleeve will make it worse. Note that means it does NOT make it worse for the rest, but 30% is still a fairly big risk - and you'll find several people on here who originally had the sleeve but were later revised to bypass because of it. I also had GERD and was advised to go with bypass, so I did. I wasn't willing to take that chance. The GERD went away (as it usually does with bypass), and I've been very happy with my decision. malabsorption is rare as long as you keep on top of your vitamins. I don't think bypass is really that much more complex - and it's been around for a long time (much longer than the standalone sleeve surgery). That part of it appealed to me as well. the decision is ultimately up to you (or it SHOULD be, anyway), but there are some medical conditions for which one surgery is more appropriate than the other, and GERD is one of those conditions.
-
It was the other way around for me. I really wanted to have the bypass because average weight loss is higher than for the sleeve. But it turned out to be medically contra-indicated for me and I had to have the sleeve instead. I was super-disappointed, but it has turned out well in the end. I got to my weight loss goal and a normal BMI and I didn't have any major complications or issues. I know it's frustrating not to be able to do the surgery you want, but it can still be a total success. The sleeve does exacerbate GERD for a lot of patients, so when you balance the risks/benefits, are you taking that into account as well? Are you willing to possibly have to do a revision surgery at some point down the road if you have the sleeve? I guess another option is not having the surgery at all but obesity carries its own serious risks. It can be hard evaluating all these trade-offs, so I wish you well in making the best decision. 🤗
