    Sleeved 4/11 5 days out

I am clear liquids for 1 week (sleeved 4/12), then will go to purées which includes yogurt, sf pudding, applesauce, etc
  2. Maria, you're going through what many bandsters lovingly call "bandsters hell" (if you do a search for the term you'll get many hits). Most likely have very little, if any, fill in your band. Bandsters go through this period with varying degrees of hunger, but if you have very little swelling, the fluids that you're taking are going straight through the banded area. The doctor wants you on fluids now because your stitches are healing and if you eat solid food the digestion process will cause your stomach to churn and that coupled with the possibility of eating something that could get stuck might lead to possible serious problems down the line. Band slippage being one. If the hunger becomes unbearable, call your doctor. He might suggest an added protein shake, or something to that effect. Two weeks is pretty typical to stay on fluids. If you feel tempted to munch on something try to focus on those stitches and how important it is to let them heal for your longterm health and success with the band. Good luck.

    When To Get First Fill?

I am scheduled for my first aftercare on the 19th, four weeks out. At this point I am not sure what will happen, I am still not getting all that hungry or eating a great deal. I know that can change as time goes by but I am feeling really smooth, right now.

    Bay Area of California anyone?

Hi - Congrats on your surgery and the progress you have made thus far!! I live in Los Gatos a little to far to travel to the east bay. I am still in the preop phase with surgery likely at the end of Feb/beginning of March. I do love to go for hikes and walk. I live next to the Vasona walking trail that goes all the way to Lexington, Rancho San Antonio, and Castle Rock. If you are ever in the south bay and want to meet up send me a message. Since I ask everyone post surgery - where did you have your surgery, how was your recovery, what has been the hardest, the best, and lastly any suggestions to us pre sleevers on the best things to have around the first few weeks? Thanks! Best of luck Bay Area Sleevers!
  5. I taught this past year and had my surgery in February my surgery was on a Friday so I was going to take sick days for Thursday and Friday and then the following week. I got lucky though and we had a big snow storm and I only had to take 3 sick days. I was originally going have my surgery over Christmas break but my paperwork didn't get submitted for insurance approval as soon as I expected. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    I want a salad?

I can't stand tuna fish, that's one of the things I can also eat right now !! Struggle with things I can eat ! I can't stand eggs either , I've been in trouble for weeks about not eating egg! Lol Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  7. As others have said, if we could have lost all that weight and kept it off just by dieting, we would have done so previously... I, for one, had basically given up on dieting before making the decision to undergo surgery. I had already come to the conclusion that it was hopeless because even at my most motivated, when I lost 40 lbs. over half a year with a really intense low-carb diet and major exercising, I not only couldn't get beyond that, but couldn't even keep that weight off for long - eventually I gained it all back and then some, as I'm sure just about everyone on this forum experienced time and again pre-op. I had no doubts at all that surgery was my last hope. The only time that doubts emerged was actually AFTER the surgery, when I was trying to deal with all the pain and thinking to myself that I should have just dieted - that would have been much easier. But even then I knew that that was stupid, because there's no way I could have done it. Now, around 7 weeks post-op, I can say with even greater certainty that this sleeve has changed and saved my life.

    I'm a Newbie!

Hi everyone. My name is Tahleah. I haven't had lap band nor am i planning to. But I am on Optifast! My mother recently had lap band and she was the one who introduced me to Optifast, and so i'm on 3 Meal Replacements a day! (well only on a good day) Since being on Optifast I've lost 9 kilo's! thats in 3 weeks!!! So i joined to meet other people which were also on optifast so that i could have that extra boost on days when i feel as if i need to eat BAD FOOD!
  9. Hi, I am new to the lap band community. I am going to my first appointment with my surgeon tomorrow. I am very excited. I have completed 5 months of my 6 month pre-op diet. I have all my paperwork in order. My question is...what's next? Do the doctors go ahead and get the insurance to pre-approve the surgery or does all of the 6 month diet info have to be on file? I want to be banded in November over Thanksgiving Holidays, do you think this is possible? (I am a teacher) Will I beable to go back to work after one week? Thanks for answering my questions!

    fever?

I did! I had low grade fever the whole entire first week. My doc said it was ok as long as it didn't go over 101 Today marks my 2 weeks post op still dealing with weakness, a bit of nausea, and not reaching my Protein goal
  11. I'm feeling really awkward. I go this week for my post op. I've been eating regular good but being careful about whites. However, I am always hungry and stop myself before feeling full because I don't feel full and guilt rises. I don't eat as much as before but after I eat I feel like I have over eaten. These protein drinks make me gag now. I can't take the ones with thicker consistency at this point. I am almost excited about getting a full because I need the restriction. Anyone else with this feeling?
  12. You're fairly early along so there's not a lot of risk yet, but I would check your blood pressure just to be sure. I had bad headaches BUT it was last trimester and I was mildly pre-eclamptic - but again, that didnt start till 35 weeks or so so dont panic. When I was pregnant with Eliza I developed a really bad headache that gradually worsened over two weeks, I was only about 9 or 10 weeks along, bit of a worry, but it turned out to be a sinus infection.
  13. Hi Everyone. Haven't been on in a while, but I am so discouraged decided to ask you experts. I had lost about 82 lbs but it has slowed so much. Even though I am exercising and watching portions and carbs, I only lost 1 lb in month 6. Now that I am starting the 7th month, I gained a pound yesterday and got on the scale today (which I wouldn't usually do so I don't obsess) but had gained another lb! I am soooo down and wonder if the weight loss stops at 7 months for most people or if I have just hit a stall. If so it;s one H___ of a stall! Just hoping you guys can pick my spirits up a little and give me some adivce, Thanks, as always!
  14. I believe I had lost about -85lbs in the first year and then just kept on working my sleeve slow and sure. I have not gained any weight back, but I stall for really long periods of time. For instance I've weighed about the same now for the last probably 8 weeks. I lost some earlier this year in Jan/Feb but then it has slowed down and I've been the same for Mar/Apr. I "bounce" up a lb, down a lb, up 2 lbs, down 2lbs, but I write my weight down once a week and I can see that it's been in the same "zone" for quite some time now. Hopefully I'll be dropping some more soon, but in the meanwhile I have to be very patient. It's hard but do-able!

    Last Supper Syndrome?!?!

I'm going to propose something a bit different. You have until March 12 to lose the 15 pounds which gives you 6.5 weeks to do it. Make a top 5 list of the "last meals" you'd like to have. Limit it to 5. Over the next 3 to 5 days, have your top 5 meals for lunch and/or dinner. Once you have finished your last 5 meals, start your pre-op diet. Now, has your dietician or surgeon told you what type of diet to follow, such as liquid or solid Protein? If not, then I'd recommend doing a solid protein diet, such as Atkins Phase I. It gives you plenty of solid protein, like chicken, steak, turkey, pork, etc., very limited carbs (my dietician wanted 30 grams or less of carbs per day), and based on what my BMR (base metabolic rate) was at the time I started my pre-op diet, I limited my calories to 1500 a day (which based on MY weight would give me a 2 pound loss per week). Now if you add in exercise to this equation, burning another 300 calories per day and you work out 6 days a week, you'll end up losing about 2.5 pounds per week (when you combine food calories plus the exercise calories). That would get you to about 13 pounds lost during that time. You can cut your calories down to 1200 per day, which would up your weight loss to about 3 pounds a week when combined with exercise, which would take you to 15 pounds lost. Many free websites (I used www.my-calorie-counter.com) will help you track your food intake as well as determine what your BMR is. It is very important to use this calculation as it will tell you based on your current weight, height, gender, and level of activity, how many calories you need to take in per day just to maintain your weight. Depending on how much weight you want to lose per week, you then need to subtract 3500 calories per pound per week from your total. For example, if your BMR indicates 2200 calories a day to maintain your weight, and you want to lose 2 pounds per week, you'd take 2,200 cals x 7 days = 15,400 cals/week - 7,000 calories = 8,400 cals / 7 days = 1,200 calories per day. This does not include the calories you burn exercising. If you start working out, those calories burned will help with the weight loss. So, all of this to say that I hope this helps you get in your last meals, but also lose the required 15 pounds by March 12. Don't forget to drink your Water as that definitely helps too! Good luck! I know you can do it!

    Weigh In Today Hope 180's

I'm sure you're there now! And sgraff, you only weighed 151.6 before surgery and are at 146.8 a week later? Did you mean to type that 251 instead? I just don't see anyone weighing 151.6 getting this surgery. That's my goal! Lol.

    Advice ?!?!

This may not be the best advice but try not to worry so much about your pre-op diet and focus your energy on post-op. I lost 18.5 pounds in the 6 days before surgery when I started the Protein drinks and Clear liquids on the day before, so in my opinion, you have a little "wiggle room". I'm sure the doctor would not agree but the way I look at it is this: I've made this decision and I'll follow your instructions to the best of my abiltiy, but I'm human and have an overeating problem. It took me much longer than 2 months to learn the bad behaviors so you can't expect me to completely change in 2 months. Plus I had to quit smoking on top of it. (I still yearn for a cigarette, diet coke and regular coffee and hope the cravings go away eventually!!) It's good that you are being mindful and making healthy choices, but my personal addmission is that I lived it up in the months before surgery. I ate what I wanted, whenever I wanted. It was my "good bye" to unhealthy food and eating habits. I was stressed about the surgery (and my upcoming move and wedding) and being a stress eater, I pigged out on several occassions. But I also started to incorporate the healthy options and found a good balance near the end. You'll find that balance, too. And for now, don't weigh yourself every day. Maybe a couple times a week. Save the daily weigh-ins for when you start the liquid diet just before surgery and you'll be amazed at the results. Oh, and one more thing...I gained 13 pounds the day of surgery. They pump you full of fluids so that you don't dehydrate post-op. I weighed 8.7 pounds more when I left the hospital than I did when I checked in. Just keep that in mind for afterwards and know that it will come off plus more in a week or 2. Good luck and try not to stress so much!

    Gaining during surgery

Yep, I gained a bunch from surgery. It's just the fluids your body is retaining to help heal itself. Don't worry about it! Step on again in a week and you'll be amazed!

    Typical day's food

I'm nine weeks out, and my diet is pretty varied. I haven't tried fresh veggies or fruit yet (my surgeon says 3 months for those) but I eat pretty much everything else in moderation. Typical day is three meals, and two Snacks, for instance, here is today's plan (I work nights, so keep that in mind: 5pm: Boca burger, on a Joseph's flax, wheat bran pita (I'll probably eat about 3/4) 10pm: Premier Protein shake 2am: homemade quiche with ham, cheese, broccoli 5am: string cheese 8am: 1/2 of a Thomas's bagel thin, with Peanut Butter That's about 750 calories, 75 grams protein, 30 grams net carbs according to MFP I average 600-800 calories per day, get at least 60 grams of protein, and try and keep the net carbs (carbs minus fiber) under 50. Hope this helps!

    Mushy foods stage

@@computercat Egg can be very harsh. I am 28 months post op and still they feel like bricks in my stomach. I get sick every single time I try them by themselves. I can eat a tiny and I do mean tiny amount of a hard boiled egg if it is in a salad. I can pretty much eat everything else but I have found it very common for people to have trouble with eggs. I have also learned that you need to keep trying every couple of weeks or months. I last tried them about 6 weeks ago and I just cannot handle them so I am giving up on eggs.
  22. I'd research other surgeons, just to get a feel for the different approachs....then make your decision. There is emerging evidence that prolonged super low calorie diets before and after surgery could reset your metabolism to unrealistically low levels that set you up for weight gain later. (not saying this always happens, not saying this is gosple....bariatrics are an emerging science....just sharing that there are a lot of different ideas at play) My group did a very carb restricted diet for two weeks before surgery. We were allowed to drink 5 shakes a day plus one food item from a list.....but this was just to shrink the liver for an easier procedure. My group wanted 10% weight loss, but expected it to take months. We were required to work with a nutritionist, attend fitness classes, healthy cooking classes, support groups. Our whole process took 4-6 months...just to lay the nutrition groundwork and weight loss work before the surgery. After surgery, we were pushed to eat 1200 calories a day as soon as we could tolerate it...in hopes that this would give us a robust metabolic reset. (to be clear, we went through the gradual restoration of diet after surgery for safety....liquid, puree, soft, etc....but our caloric goals were advanced as tolerated) I lost weight slower than most people....but I made goal, and I'm doing really well maintaining. My preferences and nutrition choices are much healthier. I've got good support for the mental side of this process. I feel like I was better prepared by my group for the work of making the permenant changes necessary and dealing with the lifetime challenges. Be a little careful of clinics that push unrealistically brutal calorie restriction. Eating 600 calories a day will make you lose a crap-ton of weight and will make your clinic look like they offer "The Magic Cure"....but you don't need to be their walking bulletin board for a year and then be abandoned by them when you regain. You need a comprehensive program that supports your needs for a lifetime and teaches healthy nutrition and fitness and supports the mental challenges of breaking the addiction.

My husband's sleeve was don't the same day, out on Sunday as well. A week and a half later readmitted for pancreatitis and blood clot (can happen to 1:1000 of bariatric patients) for 5 days. Is been the weeks since that and his pancreas is still messed up. :/
  25. I had no problem with Protein shakes preop. I did three weeks of Optifast. I was banded feb. 19 and every time I drink a Protein shake - optifast or something else, I get an upset stomach and sometimes diarrhea. Any suggestions? I would really like to drink the as I have a hard time eating my protein. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks! Cindy
